Profile

Unlike some police officers, Barry Allen prefers non-violent means, has an impressive set of improvisational skills, is good with languages, and has a very strong science background. Known as the Fastest Man Alive, the Flash is a hero who uses his powers to help the helpless, whether they are from his home in Central City, Missouri, or from the world at large. The Scarlet Speedster's defence of Central City has earned him a Museum and the everlasting gratitude of its citizenry.

Description
The Flash is instantaneously recognisable, at least when he is moving slow enough to be seen as anything other than a red and yellow streak. He stands 183 cm tall, weighs 88 kg, and has athletic build under the skin-tight bodysuit. He'd have to in order to be caught dead in that getup. It is decidedly unforgiving.

It covers him from head to toe in scarlet, with a yellow lightning bolt pattern accenting his waist and below each elbow. The cowl of the suit covers the majority of his head, save for a pair of eyeholes, from which his piercing blue eyes can shine, and the open space underneath, leaving his nose and mouth visible. It's better for breathing too.

Over the ears is a pair of golden wings, replicating the wings of Mercury, and in the centre of his chest, a circle of white crossed diagonally with another yellow lightning bolt. On his feet he wears a pair of yellow boots which end a little ways below the knee.

History
On the night of 13 May 1999, Nora Allen and Charlene Thawne both paid a visit to Dr. Gilmore's office in Fallville, Iowa. Both were very pregnant, Allen with twins, and Thawne with a single child. All of them were boys.

Now, in a town like Fallville, pregnancies are rare. Two pregnancies are unheard of, and two women going into labour at the same time; that's the hand of fate at work. But unfortunately, Dr. Gilmore had been drinking that night.

The Thawne boy strangled on its umbilical cord and though normally Dr. Gilmore could have saved the boy, in his intoxicated state, he was unable to do much. Feeling guilty, and sorry for the Thawnes, he sensed an opportunity.

He decided that seeing as the Allen's had two children and the Thawne's none, he could restore some kind of balance. He took the Thawne's child and passed it off to the Allen's as a stillborn child. But they still had one.
They named him Barry, and he would become the Flash. The other boy, given to the Thawne's, was named Malcolm, and he would become Cobalt Blue. And thus began the ancient feud between the Allen's and the Thawne's.

But that would come later. For now, the Allen's were delighted to have one son survive. In an ironic bit of foreshadowing, he was born two weeks late. He didn't know it then, but it would set the tone for the rest of his life.

As a boy, he lost his father, Dr. Henry Allen, Ph.D. to American correctional industry. Though Dr. Allen was innocent, justice is blind, and sometimes it convicts the wrong man. This would give Barry a lifelong interest the law.

Later, his mother was murdered when he was on his way home from school. He didn't get there on time. He just wasn't fast enough, and for a long time, a very long time, he blamed himself. But someday, he would be fast enough.

And he would correct it. He would get her back; except, that created a cruel world of pain and suffering. And he would have to set things right. In a sad twist of fate, he saved her, and then had to stop himself from doing it.

He would be taken in by his neighbours, growing up on a farm, become a stand out student, with a particular interest in chemistry. He won first place in the Fremont County Fair Agricultural Competition, which came with a scholarship to Sun City University, in Orlando, Florida.

At SCU, he worked on his tan, played volleyball, enjoyed life, and managed to graduate with a Bachelor of Engineering, and Master of Biochemistry.

During his senior year, he assisted the Orlando Police Department in apprehending one of America's Most Wanted, a bank robber who had successfully robbed banks across the country. It made headlines throughout the nation.

Based on this fifteen minutes of fame, and his degree from SCU, the Central City Police Department offered him a position close to home with their Scientific Detection Bureau. He leapt at the chance and settled in quickly.

Then one night he returned to one of his experiments after a short food break. The window was struck by lightning, shattering the glass and most of a chemical cabinet. Barry was struck by lightning and covered in fluids.

He survived. He cleaned himself up and the lab. Most people would have left the mess. But Barry knew that the morning crew would object if he left the mess, and some of the chemicals were too hazardous to be left untreated.

Walking out of the station, he tried to flag down a taxi, but the driver didn't see him. He sprinted after the car, only to find that he quickly passed the vehicle as if it had been stationary. Surely, it must have been the lightning bolt. His perceptions were off. It must have been a second taxi.

He found his way to a diner, where ordered a strong coffee, and hoped to collect his thoughts. A passing waitress accidentally spilled her tray onto him, and amazingly, he caught each and every item on the tray. Something was up.

The next day, he saved someone from a stray bullet. There was no doubt about it. The accident, whether it was the chemicals, the lightning, or some combination of them, had mutated him at the cellular level. He had powers!

And he quickly set about using those powers. He devised a costume for himself and called himself the Flash in honour of the first man to bear that name.

From there, he helped found the Justice League, took on a protégé in Kid Flash, and travelled the world. He is the Flash.

Personality

Personality
Barry Allen has a well deserved reputation for taking things slow. He's even keeled, cool headed, calm, and confident. But while he has many fine attributes, he may be the worst procrastinator that the world has ever known. If he can avoid doing work, putting it off until tomorrow, he will. Even things that might benefit from being done today are often put off until later.

Somehow, he always manages to get by, both before the accident, and especially since. As a student, he did well in class, demonstrating his keen intellect. His projects received high marks and he tested extremely well. His teachers loved him, but what little they knew. It was all just a big façade.

He would routinely start his projects the night before, if not the morning before, and he would cram for every exam leading up to it. He might not have retained much of it, but he did well where it technically counted, the score.

He fully believes in the motto of the force, to protect and serve. A lot of people focus on the first part, which is important, but the second often gets neglected. He might be able to rescue cats from trees, people from burning buildings, a convention centre from a bomb, a bank from a robbery, a bus from a crash, a dog from a bully, a baby from a kidnapper, a window cleaner from a fall, and someone from seeing the Hustle, all in a five minute span.

Where was this going? Oh yes, don't see the Hustle. After it, you'll wish you'd just watched Dirty Rotten Scoundrels instead, and you'll really wish that you could have 94 minutes of your life back.

And that kind of gets what it means to be the Flash. He's one of the friendliest, most approachable heroes out there. He'll gabber with the guys, babble with his buds, gossip with the girls, yap with the youth, chatter with the children, and he can be a real motor-mouth with the misunderstood.

That's what he likes to call the bad guys. They're not so much evil - well, most of them aren't - as they are misunderstood. They're people too, usually, with reasons behind what they're doing. He'd rather talk, while stopping them, and see if he can figure out what makes them tick, so he can help them.

As Barry, he's pretty much the same guy, except a much slower pace. That's all. He's likeable, he's friendly, courteous, interesting, knowledgeable, outgoing, and he does what you do. He likes what you like. He's just one of the guys. Except when he's the Flash. Then he becomes the Fastest Man Alive.

Abilities

Ageing
The Flash hasn't aged since the accident. He still looks as he did when he was 24-years old, but he was born on 13 May 1999. Technically, he does age; he just does it at a vastly decelerated rate. Someday, he may even look 25. Curiously, those who have prolonged periods of contact seem to also suffer, or benefit, depending on one's point of view, from this affect.

Aura
The Flash suffers no ill effects from moving at super speeds. When he carries someone, like if he saved someone from a burning building, they are equally protected. He can also accelerate speedsters. Those who are already fast, but not as fast as him, can keep up with him. This isn't something that he consciously decides, but just seems to happen when circumstances permit. Should they deviate, moving away from him, or he consciously decides to outrun them, they will return to whatever limitations normally apply.

Constructs
The Flash can use the Speed Force to create duplicates of himself. Technically, they are ghost images. He moves at such a phenomenal speed that he can even interact with his former self. He can also use the Speed Force to create inanimate objects, simple ones like walls, stairs, and bridges. These constructs are prohibitively difficult to create and maintain.

Flight
The Flash can use the same mechanics as a helicopter to generate flight. He can even fly like a Kryptonian if he so desires. But there's very little point in his even attempting flight. He's much faster on the ground. He could run up the side of a building and leap out at a target faster than most fliers could fly in a straight line towards. As such, he rarely flies.

Healing
The Flash is not immune to damage. He's hard to hurt, but when he is, he heals at a phenomenal rate. If his body is capable of healing from an injury, it does. He just does it in a fraction of the time it should take. A small cut or abrasion heals instantly. Something that would put him in traction for months or even years might be repaired in a matter of hours or days at most.

Learning
The Flash could read the entire contents of an encyclopaedia, if they still made them, in a matter of seconds, minutes at most. It really depends on how motivated he is. He can develop physical skills that are learned through repetition just as quickly. If he wanted to, he could make a master look like a white belt. He could become a concert pianist.

If it's limited to physicality or simple research, he can learn it. The problem with these kinds of skills is that he didn't really have to pay a price to acquire them, and so without maintenance, they seem to disappear.

The next time he needs them, he just re-learns them. But the second time is usually quicker as it jogs his memory. This is because the neural pathways forged through this expedited learning aren't as stable as ones created normally. Similarly, he may develop muscle memory, but he still needs to decide what he wants to do.

Miscellaneous
The Flash has a number of little known abilities. While exercising his power, he does not need to breath, sleep, eat, and is not susceptible to the effects of extreme temperatures. As these powers rarely come into play, little is known about their full extent. Just how long could he go without breathing?

Perception
The Flash can discern objects, people, and places as he travels. If it weren't for his enhanced perceptions, he might run right past something of note like a person in trouble or whatever his goal was when he set off. Most of it is a blur, easily forgotten, but he always catches the important details.

Phasing
The Flash can vibrate his molecules in order to pass through solid objects. He prefers not to try this with animated objects such as plants or animals, but he can do it. Mostly, he uses it to phase through walls or doors.

Siphon Speed
The Flash can siphon speed from others who use the Speed Force. He can slow them to a crawl, or even stop them. Others can do the same to him. It is not an easy trick, but anyone who uses the Speed Force may learn to perform it.

Speed
The Flash's main ability is his speed. He is known as the Fastest Man Alive because he has never met anyone, or anything, that could outpace him. The main limitation he has while operating in an atmosphere is that excessive speeds begin to create collateral damage. At his speed, it becomes difficult to measure, but he does know that he can move faster than light, much faster.

Stamina
The Flash can run for extended periods of time, exert himself, without succumbing to the body's limitations. He can run for hours, maybe days. He's never had a reason to try, but he's never had to stop because he was tired.

Strength
The Flash is able to harness the power of the Speed Force to increase his strength beyond the capabilities of his muscles. He most often uses it to increase the effect of a punch, but he can focus his efforts on any body part.

He could make his legs especially strong to jump a chasm, providing he has a reason to jump rather than simply run down and up the other side. Using the Speed Force in this manner lets him hold his own against supervillains.

Thinking
The Flash can think at super speeds. For most, this means being aware of their surroundings while moving at super speed. But to the Flash, it is so much more. He can solve puzzles, test theories, run through scenarios, examine clues, evidence, contemplate theoretical equations, and anything else he might choose to consider. He's one of the best at super fast thinking.

Vortices

The Flash can create vortices by planting his feet and rapidly rotating his extremities, either his hands, or a leg. He needs part of his body to remain motionless to create these effects, such as a tornado or other strong wind.

Skills

Artistic
Barry Allen is a proficient sketch artist, able to accurately draw a picture of a person's face from memory.

Computer Specialist
Barry Allen is adept with computers. For example, he once wrote an algorithm to find an electricity based Rogue by monitoring the electrical manipulations to the network that their powers caused.

Conditioning
From his time with the Central City Police Department, Barry Allen is in top physical condition and possesses great levels of physical strength, endurance, stamina, and agility.

Cooking
Barry Allen is skilled in cooking, having made fancy meals for himself and others.

Criminology
Barry Allen graduated from Sun City University with a Bachelors of Engineering, Master of Biochemistry, and a minor in forensic science.

Dancing
Barry Allen is a talented dancer, especially in ballroom and tap, not that there is much call for either.

Explosives Expert
Because of his profound scientific knowledge and his police training, Barry Allen is an expert in explosives, able to diffuse intricate explosives, and create an explosive reaction from scratch.

Forensic Science
Barry Allen is a forensic scientist. That's his day job. It's what he did before he became the Flash. Although the truth is far from the way television portrays it, everything you've seen on Crime Scene Investigation, he can do. He is a police officer, detective, and scientist all rolled into one.

Be it chemistry, computational forensics, criminalistics, forensic anthropology, forensic botany, forensic DNA analysis, forensic pathology, forensic toxicology, forensic video analysis, mobile device forensics, organic chemistry, or trace evidence analysis, he's the man for the job. Neat, huh?

Hand-To-Hand Combat
After his training in the Central City Police Department, Barry Allen became a skilled at hand-to-hand combatant, able to hold his own against trained soldiers and use almost anything around him for defence.

Indomitable Will
Barry Allen possesses enough willpower that he would be a worthy candidate for a Green Lantern Ring.

Intellect
Barry Allen's greatest asset is his amazing intellect. Possessing an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of sciences ranging from chemistry to engineering, he puts this knowledge to use by creating ingenious ways of overcoming any foe or obstacle in his way.

Investigation
Barry Allen is a master detective, below that of Batman and Tim Drake, but not far off. He can easily start to paint a picture of a crime scene in his mind before even running any tests.

Multilingual
Barry Allen is fluent in English and Spanish. He can understand limited conversational Mandarin.

Singing
While quite modest about this skill and not always a fan of performing, Barry Allen is an excellent singer.

Skilled Deceiver

Despite sometimes being awkward at certain times, Barry Allen can be deceiving. When he went back in time, he kept acting like his past-self around people that knew him without raising suspicion.

Resources

Central City Pd
Barry Allen is a forensic scientist with the Central City Police Department. He can usually requisition whatever he might need, and has access to their databanks. As the Flash, the CCPD will pretty much do anything he asks of them. They trust his judgement. If he asked, it must be important.

Cosmic Treadmill
The Flash invented the Cosmic Treadmill, which enables him to harness his abilities and use them to travel through time. Because time and space are related, he can travel backwards or forwards in time, and to a place of his choosing. He's never used it to travel to other worlds, but the theory is sound.

Due to the danger it poses to the time stream, he never uses it unless it is absolutely vital. He's tried to fiddle with time before, and it could not have turned out worse. It's also temperamental, often requiring extensive maintenance after each usage. And Cosmic Treadmill parts don't come cheap!

Note: The Cosmic Treadmill may only be used as part of an approved event.

Flash Family
The Flash Family is a group of speedsters that are linked to the Speed Force, or just happen to be really, really fast and nice people. They don't let the bad apples into their club, even if they do look the part. No zooming.

Flash Foundation
The Flash saves the rich and poor alike, but the rich had the resources to reward him. Whenever someone chooses to donate, they can send it to the Flash Foundation, which serves a variety of purposes. First of all, it offers financial assistance to any of the Flash Family who might be in need of it.

It maintains the Flash Museum of Central City, and when the speedsters are involved in collateral damage, it tries to assist anyone who might have been affected. The rest, when there is a rest, goes to a number of community outreach programs. The Flash Museum also houses the Flash's battle trophies.

Flash Ring
Barry Allen devised a way to store his uniform inside of a ring. The uniform is shrunk using a special type of gas, and expands with another. He always carries the ring with him, meaning he's ever at the ready to become the Flash, or change back into Barry Allen. His close allies have copies of the ring.

Justice League
The Flash was a founding member of the Justice League. He's periodically relinquished the role of team speedster to others, but he always remains a reservist, held in high regard, and can count on the League whenever he makes the call.

Personal Effects
Barry Allen has the usual things you would expect. He has a three-bedroom house, a couple of desktop computers, a notebook computer, a smart phone, a tablet, a modest stock portfolio, a surprisingly nice wardrobe, trinkets seemingly from around the world, and some very nice furniture.

You'd be surprised at the kind of deals you can get when buying from the source and transporting it yourself. That and the look on the ferry captain's face as he carried a couch on his back were priceless. He even stopped to take a photo and would have had a chat with the man, but then his couch would have sunk into the ocean.

Swiss Army Knife
Barry Allen regularly carries a red Victorinox Swiss Army Knife. It was originally given to him by his paternal grandfather, also called Barry Allen.

It has a main spear point blade, as well as various tools, such as screwdrivers, a can opener, and many others. These attachments are stored inside the handle of the knife through a pivot point mechanism.

The handle is red and bears a white Victorinox cross logo.

Uniform

The Flash's uniform is made from Mister Fantastic's unstable molecule formula. It resists tearing from the speed he routinely achieves. And while he rarely gets hit, it is more durable than any normal material. It also has a built in communications array, and a few other goodies. He's constantly working on it, upgrading it, though these upgrades are often minor or cosmetic only.

Weaknesses

Affable
The Flash is affable, even when he shouldn't be. He believes that everyone has value. If it's convenient, he'll stop and talk with mothers in the park, crossing guards, window washers, criminals, kids wearing sandwich boards, anyone, and everyone. He likes to get to know the people. He's probably one of the few heroes who'll stop to ask a villain about their day. But, he has time, all the time in the world, so why not use it to brighten someone's day?

Eating
Barry Allen once believed that he had a high metabolism. Most speedsters do. But that is not how the Speed Force works. You do not burn an inordinate amount of calories while running the circumference of the Earth. The human body does not contain enough calories to power a 40,075 km run, let alone multiple trips in rapid succession. The Speed Force provides its own energy to the user.

That said, Barry often feels hungry after exerting himself as the Flash. This is a purely psychological effect. Unlike most speedsters, he is aware of it. But being aware of a psychological effect does not entirely negate it. He knows that he doesn't need to eat 12 Big Belly Burgers, and yet he still frequently gorges himself after exerting himself as the Flash. Thankfully for his waist line, post-Speed Force gorging seems to have little effect on his waistline. It may be a residual effect of using the Speed Force.

Electricity
The Flash is a Speed Forcer user. In order to use it, a certain amount of electricity is generated, covering and seeping into his body. This is why there is often a crackle of electricity while using his speed. If someone could absorb the electricity, it would stop him at a source. As fast as a Formula 1 race car is, if you can't get the motor running, it won't go.

Kinetic Energy
Speed is motion. It is an exercise in kinetic energy. The Flash lives in this world. He's picked out curtains. Anyone who could slow down the atoms, to remove kinetic energy, separate him from it, absorb it, or otherwise put a stop to it, is going to be a supreme challenge for him. At least one of his Rogues', the Turtle, makes use of this tactic. It is not insurmountable, as the person using it is still vulnerable, but it does make life supremely difficult for the Flash.

Learning
The neural pathways forged through Speed Force assisted learning aren't as stable as ones created normally. Because of this, knowledge learned, and mental skills developed in this way are transitory. They must be re-learned when he wants to use them again. Muscle memory is retained however, so his body will remember how to block a punch, but his mind will not remember it. In that way, he is an amnesiac when it comes to physical skills learned in this manner. Either way, there is always a mental component needed to execute these abilities, so he must re-learn them.

Morality
The Flash is a highly moral being. He may hide his identity behind a mask, but he does that in order to protect those he cares about. He tries to respect the law whenever possible, but if he's faced with a choice as the Flash of following the spirit of the law or the letter of the law, the spirit will win out every time. As Barry, the letter sometimes wins, but not easily.

Nemesis
The Flash has a nemesis. Professor Eobard Thawne, sometimes known as the Reverse-Flash, Professor Zoom, or simply Zoom, is a twisted sociopath from the 25th Century. He has the powers of the Flash, and wears an inverted copy of his uniform. Thawne hates Barry Allen and everything he stands for.

Perception
The Flash can discern objects, people, and places as he travels, but Barry Allen cannot. Shifting from normal to speed force user perception is a conscious choice. It is a near instantaneous shift, the same way one can change what their eyes focus on, or what sound they listen for in a crowd. But there is no precognition involved. He does not have super reflexes or reactions. He can mimic them by changing his perception, but he must do it before, not after.

Barry Allen could be hit by a sniper in the back. There is nothing he could do to prevent it. While in costume, if acting and perceiving in normal time, he could too. He can oscillate between his two states at will, tying someone up, pausing to quip, saving another person, pausing to quip a second time, and so on. But every time he slows down to normal speed, he becomes a normal person. This may be his greatest weakness. He wants to be involved. When using his speed, he is isolated in a world that is frozen by comparison.

Physicality
The Flash exists in a physical world. He is a powerhouse in it, able of doing all manner of things. But he needs to confront something he can touch and feel. Anything that confronts him sans body, be it telepathy, or some kind of other incorporeal being, is going to have a huge advantage against him, perhaps one that he cannot overcome no matter what he comes up with.

Procrastination
Flash believes that if it's worth doing, it's worth doing at the last possible moment. As Barry Allen, he is often late for meetings, evaluations, doctor's appointments, and anything he's supposed to attend at a specific time. As the Flash, he will routinely wait until there is practically no time left before doing something, no matter how trivial or important it is. He lives his life by never doing today what he can put off for tomorrow.

Rogues' Gallery
The Flash has amassed a considerable enemies list over the years. Collectively, they are referred to as his Rogues' Gallery. Each of them has been harmed in some way by the Flash's actions, either by stopping some plot, or actively bringing them to justice. They all want a piece of him, and sometimes they team up to do it. So far, it hasn't worked too well for them.

Secret Identity
The Flash is a public figure, a hero, but he wears a mask. He is technically a vigilante. He routinely breaks the laws, even if he does so with the tacit approval of the Central City Police Department. He strives to preserve the secret of his identity, but alas, several of his Rogues, such as Professor Zoom, are already acquainted with his dual identity and won't hesitate to use it against him. He fears for the safety and security of those closest to him.

Siphon Speed
Other Speed Force users can siphon speed from the Flash. They can slow him to a crawl, or even stop him. He can do the same to them. It is not an easy trick, but anyone who uses the Speed Force may learn to perform it.

Speed Force
Barry Allen is a versatile man, but he is just a man. With the Speed Force, he becomes the Flash. Virtually all of his phenomenal abilities, save for that of his great mind, stem from the Speed Force. Cut him off from it, either by accident or design, and he will no longer be the Fastest Man Alive.

Telepathy
The Flash can consciously negate telepathic attack by thinking. It is not a true negation, as he must expend considerable effort, and he must be aware of the attack in the first place. It's more like a computer programmer employing countermeasures as another person tries to hack the system. It's a mental chess match. He can recite the entire score of the H.M.S. Pinafore, followed by the entire works of Gilbert and Sullivan, followed by, followed by, followed by. At some point, either he or the telepath will give up.

When he is not aware of the attack, he is vulnerable. As Barry Allen, his surface thoughts are wide open to anyone capable who would care to peruse them. Even without the Speed Force, he has an analytical mind, making him harder to read than most. There's just so much inane babble or scientific principles that it can be hard to get to something useful.

When he looks at a wall that contains a single hanging picture, he does not just appreciate the artwork, but considers the spacing, the distance from the floor, ceiling, and sides; whether or not it is level; the composition of the picture frame, what materials he anticipates it to be comprised of; whether it is behind glass or plastic; the baseboards, crown moulding, chair railing, the paint on the wall; whether it matte, matte enamel, satin, eggshell, semi-gloss... it just goes on.
