Profile

The result of HYDRA's 'Project Nightingale', it could be said that the deck was stacked against Sam ever having a normal life. It's perhaps pure cosmic irony that the advent of mutant powers would be the one thing that opened the door for a better future... or at least, one where he's not an agent for a secretive shadow organisation.

Created for evil, trained for violence, this former child soldier and would-be sleeper agent has been given a chance to turn the corner and start a new life... one singular chance.

And if he messes it up? Well, they can always just lock him back up again and throw away the key.

Description:

Standing at just 157 centimeters and weighing in at 50 kilograms, Sam is slightly smaller and skinnier than the perfect average for his age. His black hair is always worn short in a practical hairstyle, contrasting strongly with his almost impossibly bright blue eyes. There's a hint of a distant European heritage in his facial structure, notably the high cheek bones, but overall he has the face of an all-american kid.

Hoodies and jackets are the order of the day, as Sam prefers to dress practical rather than fashionable, while also giving him some opportunity to conceal weapons. As such he will always favor loose pants with a myriad of pockets and either sturdy boots or cheap but practical sneakers. No matter what he wears, clear efforts are made to keep himself looking neat and presentable.

History

History:

Every evil plan, no matter how well crafted, carries within itself the seed of its own unmaking. Project Nightingale, the HYDRA program to create sleeper agents to pose as the illegitimate children of the world's rich and famous, would ultimately doomed by the same human quirk that gave Sam life in the first place: Anthropomorphization.

It started innocently, if such a term can be applied to a HYDRA genetics lab, with one researcher shortening the tedious 'Sample, Active/Mutant' to simply SAM for ease of writing. It didn't take long for this to catch on. Did SAM arrive safely? When is SAM coming over? Did you find anything unusual with SAM? Notices on caring for SAM. It turned into a running joke, and then got slightly out of hand when the team decided to throw a birthday party for SAM. This finally alerted the head of the department, Herr Doctor Eisen, that something was going on and checked the internal communications logs. It didn't take long for him to ask if they'd actually been creating a child in the lab.

The answer was, of course, no... but now that the seed had been planted, the team became convinced that they could probably do it. And as with the highly intelligent everywhere, they saw it as a challenge, and came to the conclusion that there was absolutely no reason that they couldn't, should such a thing be requested.

That, in turn, got the attention of the team running Project Nightingale. Their project had been plagued by setbacks, given that their targets were proving to be less susceptible to seduction than anticipated, and the children they were able to secure for the project thus far had all been found... unsatisfactory. What they needed was a child to their own specifications, that could be molded to become a HYDRA agent from birth, and fool a paternity test. Hair and tissue samples were delivered to the genetics team, and they were told to get to work.

The lead of the team convinced Doctor Eisen that they should include the sample they had been studying. Not simply because they had started to think of it as their child some months ago, but because she was convinced that it contained the right genetic markers for increased intelligence. The odds of the child fully expressing a mutant gene were, she claimed, negligible. Under these assurances, Doctor Eisen eventually authorised the use of SAM, knowing that he'd carry the responsibility if things went awry.

He would end up paying dearly for that.

It was, then, that on the 11th of November 2011 the child was theoretically born... although decanted is possibly a better word to use. At that point, there was absolutely no doubt in the team's mind that his name was going to be Sam. Although understandably proud of their achievements, they had used a considerable amount of resources. HYDRA refused to authorise further production until Sam's value as a strategic asset could be proven. The team was disbanded, the geneticists assigned to new duties, and Doctor Eisen put in charge of overseeing the education and indoctrination of the new Nightingale agent, Sam.

For the first few years, Sam's life was nearly normal. Ludwig Eisen became his surrogate father, and they lived in a gated community in Virginia that was used as a front by HYDRA to house high value operatives in relative comfort. During those first years he was allowed to mingle with children his own age and live relatively carefree. There was, of course, no doubt that he was to be home schooled, given that his education and outlook on life had to be very tightly controlled to ensure absolute loyalty in later years. His tutors found him to be an inquisitive and intelligent child, and the stern discipline of his 'father' rubbed off on the boy. He was active and sociable. In short, he was happy.

This ended when Sam turned 8, and the pair moved to a secure facility in the Midwest. He was now deemed to be old enough to understand his role, and to start the next stage of his training. The accommodations were a far cry from what he was used to, but at least he knew they were secure... by now, he had been indoctrinated enough to know that there were those who would harm him if only they could find him. More importantly, the facility was an operational base, with tutors, lessons and tests that Sam could never have imagined. From that moment on, he started his training in subterfuge, and met his first combat instructor, taking the first steps in becoming an operational HYDRA agent, and the happy carefree life he had known before vanished.

At the age of ten, he was separated from Doctor Eisen and installed in his own barracks room. It was a particularly painful moment, but by then Sam understood that HYDRA tolerated no weakness, and learned to hide his emotions. Aside from his regular curriculum, now Sam was expected to learn how to follow operational plans, and even make plans of his own. They demanded nothing short of perfection, every day, and any failure was severely punished. That was also the year he was put to the ultimate loyalty test. Given a loaded pistol, he was locked in a room with a hooded prisoner tied to a chair, with orders to kill. Sam had only ever known one life... and obeyed.

With his loyalty proven beyond doubt, Sam was given the great honor and responsibility of joining teams on missions... as a look out, a diversion or an unlikely infiltrator, taking advantage of his young age while keeping him relatively out of harm's way. This presented yet another change in his routine, yet another responsibility. Later on, Doctor Eisen would theorize that it was this constant stress Sam was under that caused his mutant gene to finally express. At the time though, technicians were looking all over the base for the cause of the sudden string of malfunctions and reports of corrupted data on the network. When this string of bad luck persisted for two weeks, the base commander began to suspect sabotage and instituted a full search. When restricted information was found on Sam's personal terminal, he became the prime suspect, and security footage seemed to confirm that all these malfunctions always seemed to happen while he was around. Needing no more than that, the boy was thrown in the brig and interrogated.

He was at pains to explain everything that had happened, having no clue why things around him tended to malfunction, or why data he was interested in suddenly appeared on his terminal. To shed light on this, Doctor Eisen was hurriedly recalled from his current assignment and told in no uncertain terms to get to the bottom of this mystery. Fearing he had a firm idea already, and remembering with a sinking feeling the discussion he had with the lead geneticist a decade earlier, Ludwig Eisen tested the boy who had until a few years ago been like a son to him for genetic purity. The results when they came back were unequivocal: Sam was a full mutant.

At first, this didn't seem like an insurmountable problem. With Doctor Eisen now permanently joining the base staff to run further tests and monitor Sam, there was even a hope that his abilities could be used for HYDRA's gain. That idea gained traction when further testing showed Sam's abilities as a Cyberpath, and his future as a cyber commando seemed all but assured... but HYDRA was founded on the basic principles of hatred and purity, and there were those who were not going to allow a Mutant to succeed within the organisation. This group began to engineer the downfall of Doctor Eisen, and the abomination that was Sam.

It began subtly. A few whispers in the right ears that Sam was, perhaps, getting too much of a free ride if he was to become a strategic asset. What good are skills and abilities, some argued, if they're not being tested to the utmost? Soon enough, the missions Sam was joining, and his role within them, began to change. He was put in greater danger, expected to take more risk, and was even occasionally tasked with joining a kill team. The latter was especially problematic, and it didn't take long before the boy started suffering from terribly nightmares, withdrawing further and further into himself to shut out the things he was being asked to do.

At the same time, base personnel was rotated out, so that as time went on Sam was ever more surrounded by strangers. Strangers, moreover, who didn't know that his cold exterior was a front, strangers who never knew the real Sam. Torn from the bonds that keep a team together, he became the outsider, and his work began to suffer. Not too long after that, he suffered his first anxiety attack, and even Doctor Eisen's tireless work to keep the boy safe couldn't cover that up. Now he went from being an outsider to being a liability.

The campaign to discredit Ludwig Eisen came to a crescendo when he was accused of willingly endangering the Nightingale project by allowing mutant genetic material to be used, and intentionally understating the risk of genetic mutation. It would now be harder, it was claimed, to craft a suitable cover story for Sam to take his place as a sleeper agent. At the very least, a genetic test would reveal his mutant nature, and that would draw scrutiny to his claim of being an illegitimate child. For a project that relied entirely on remaining absolutely secret, it was an almost unconscionable risk. Ludwig Eisen, loyal HYDRA geneticist, was disgraced. Luckily, he was no fool, and understood quickly the danger he and the boy he considered to be his son were in. Sam was twelve now, and on the brink of a full nervous breakdown. Their lives were in danger.

For all those reasons, Herr Doctor Ludwig Eisen committed the ultimate sin, and covertly contacted SHIELD. He was ready to defect.

The date was set for June 30th, 2024, ninety years to the day since the Night of the Long Knives. Possibly someone thought that was appropriate, but both the Doctor and Sam were concerned that this was an ill omen. In this, they were to be proven utterly correct.

That night, three messages were sent out that changed the outcome of the entire operation. Although it was never proven that they were sent by the same source, it's hard not to imagine the shadowy hand of the cabal engineering Doctor Eisen's downfall behind them.

The first two messages arrived exactly five minutes apart. The first was a coded message directly to Sam's personal terminal. It warned him that SHIELD had dispatched a kill team to the base rather than an extraction team, and both he and Ludwig Eisen would be killed on sight. Already paranoid, Sam armed himself with the pistol under his pillow, and stole away into the corridor. The second message was to the base commander, containing orders to eliminate Doctor Eisen and Sam with extreme prejudice. Obeying, he briefed a kill team, and sent them into the base to do what was necessary. Sam, on his way to Eisen's quarters, met the kill team coming the other way. Both saw each other at the same time, and both noticed right then that weapons were being openly carried. Ludwig, going to his quarters from his lab to prepare for the escape, and still in the dark about the whole disaster, walked directly in between them. What happened next was as inevitable as the tides.

When the SHIELD extraction team infiltrated the base, the situation had devolved into a running firefight. In the chaos of the moment, the team lead received priority orders... the team was to use all necessary force. There was no stopping what would happen next.

Afterwards, it was determined that it would be impossible to determine who had shot whom. Doctor Eisen was killed in the crossfire, and Sam was extracted alive but seriously wounded from the base, one of the few HYDRA survivors that night. The Nightingale project, already having failed for years to deliver any tangible results, was shut down permanently.

Days later, Sam woke up in a hospital. Still thinking that he was being targeted by both HYDRA and SHIELD, he fled as best as he was able in his condition, getting as far as New York's Grand Central Station before a concerned citizen called 911 about a clearly injured child trying to board a train. Sam's attempt to reach a safehouse was ended a few minutes later, and he was returned to SHIELD custody. Deemed an escape risk, he was transferred to the hospital of yet another secure facility. It was there that he was told the bad news about the man who had been his father, and no amount of assurances from the SHIELD agents delivering this news could convince him that they weren't somehow to blame. Sam considered himself captured by his enemies, and took every opportunity to try to escape, until there was no choice left but to lock him away... for his own safety, as well as that of the general public.

Deprogramming Sam took a long time, a succession of therapists working through a myriad of issues with the boy. His entirely world view had been turned upside down, and everything he knew to be true was now on shaky ground. The escape attempts continued, getting ever more creative and as time passed it seemed to take considerably more force to stop the teenager from breaking out. Much to the initial protests of his jailers, his therapist suggested that it would be best for him to have an outlet, and to give him access to the gym, a tutor and perhaps even a sparring partner. With these familiar parts of his life restored to him, Sam began to calm down, and slowly came to accept that he had been brainwashed. Soon he started to cooperate and answer questions about HYDRA.

It has now been several years since Sam's capture by SHIELD after that disastrous night. It's been six months since his last escape attempt, and soon the teenager will be turning sixteen. For reasons that should be entirely obvious, SHIELD has decided they cannot trust him enough to formally induct him, at least not yet, but feel that enough progress has been made that he has a shot at being more than what he was made to be. And so the call went out to trusted allies, looking for someone to give Sam a chance.

One. Singular. Chance.

Personality

Personality:

Sam is a troubled young man, who despite his past dares to hope for a better future. There is no denying that there are skeletons in his closet, that perhaps the closet isn't big enough for all of them, but he strives daily to overcome the sins of his past.

The grand irony is that the training he received from HYDRA to hide his true intentions has also given him the discipline to fight the monster that he believes lives inside of him. His past was violent, and at the time he was praised for that violence, taught to hone it into a fearsome weapon. These days he is repulsed by the notion of it, and keeps that part of him locked behind barred iron doors of self discipline, only ever letting it out in the most dire of circumstances.

He has seen, first hand, how dangerous and harsh the world can be. After being part of this cruelty for a short while, he now wants nothing more than to protect others from it. One day, who knows, he might even be considered worthy of being called a hero. And on that day, perhaps, he can finally begin to forgive himself.

Abilities

Cyberpath:
A rather rare mutation, Sam has developed a form of technological telepathy that allows him to interface with (and he prefers the term 'speak to') electronic devices within 20 meters. On the whole, he can get them to do what he wants, although he'll be the first to admit that he has no idea how he's doing what he's doing. Some complex devices designed solely to keep out intruders, like alarm systems, require a lot of persuasion to accept Sam's commands, usually several minutes worth of concentration, and even then there's no guarantee his attempts will be successful.

Devices that are entirely broken are beyond his influence, and even beyond his sense. While he can normally sense electronics near him, he could literally be standing next to a broken drone and not find it. The same is true for devices that are simply not receiving power. Those are essentially 'dead' to his senses. He could switch on an unpowered device that's on standby as long as it has power, but pull that plug and he'll have to go over there and plug the thing back in.

His abilities allow him to read data from and manipulate data on a device, such as knowing what the text message said that just came in on his phone (or someone else's phone for that matter), but he cannot directly link to a network without a device to connect to it. Similarly, he can't make a device to something it was never designed to do.

While all this may sound like fun, it has a rather uncomfortable downside. Being connected all the time to dozens of chattering devices can get to be a bit much, even for someone getting used to such chaos. There are times, especially when Sam's demons are haunting him, that he simply needs some peace and quiet. And that means getting out of reach of any networks and electronics, be that out in nature, or in a Faraday cage.

Oddly, Sam is incredibly susceptible to heterodynes: if he's trying to influence a device, and someone with genuine control tries to stop him, the two conflicting control signals will feed back and at best give him a serious migraine... or at worst cause him to lose consciousness. Equally, an EMP or other highly energetic blast that disables electronics hitting a device that Sam is controlling or even linked to is going to hurt him pretty badly... and he's linked to practically everything around him nearly all the time.

Genius:

Never dull-witted, over the last few years Sam's intellect has begun to blossom, possibly as a consequence of his mutation and the requirement to process a lot of data in a very short time. Already the proud owner of an IQ that would grant membership to Mensa, there is no doubt that with enough exercise his mind can continue to grow to well within the genius range. As a consequence, he finds it easy to recall information accurately, and tends to be quicker than average in grasping and applying new concepts, and he is constantly hungry for new information. He certainly likes to study.

Skills

Combat Training:
Every HYDRA agent worthy of that name, no matter their main purpose or even their age, needs to learn to defend themselves. Obviously, in Sam's case, there was only so much they could teach him, and only so much he could be expected to be capable of, but he was taught as much as was possible within those capabilities.

Armed Combat:
Sam is a more than decent shot with a pistol, it being one of the few firearms he could wield without difficulty at the time. He's no Wyatt Earp, but he has shot his share of 'possibles' on the firing range, and is able to land shots on target in a live environment about two times out of three. He knows how to care for a pistol, how to disassemble and reassemble it, and how to clear most malfunctions with an immediate action drill. Given his age when he was being trained, he has no experience with rifles and only limited experience with PDWs and SMGs... enough to not shoot himself while handling one and field strip one on request, but he's not going to win any marksmanship prizes with them.

In close armed combat, Sam favors a simple combat knife over anything more fancy or exotic. He's quick enough on his feet that he poses a credible threat to the untrained and street thugs, but against the super-powered or the very highly skilled he would at best get marks for effort.

Unarmed Combat:
His unarmed training focused heavily on defending against strikes and grapples, and to hit opponents in weak spots to take them down quickly. The style he employs would look familiar to those who have ever seen Black Widow fight, although he is obviously not nearly as skilled. Still, Sam can hold his own against multiple street thugs without too much effort, and probably fight off a single highly skilled opponent for long enough to give himself a chance to run away.

All of this is usually apparent in Sam's movements unless he makes an effort to hide it. He tends to scan for threats even in supposedly safe environments every so often, will refuse to sit with his back towards a door and usually walks with his right hand close to his hip even when unarmed.

Computers:
Sam is computer literate, and knows his way around common operating systems. He does, however, have a tendency to resort to cyberpathy to resolve a lot of faults or diagnose malfunctions rather than work it out for himself by more mundane means. He's the kind of person who can fix it for you, but can't explain it over the phone so you can do it yourself.

Since HYDRA occasionally needed things from a computer system that others would prefer them not to have, Sam is aware of many Black Hat tools that are available and has even used some of them, but is at current not capable of writing anything of the sort himself. But do keep your passwords updated when he's around, he knows of more than one way to trick a system into giving him access.

He has only recently discovered the joys of computer games and is, at this point, very much a n00b but getting better daily.

Fitness:
Not for Sam is the modern trend of sitting around and watching TV or just playing video games. He likes to exercise and keep himself in shape, and finds that it helps to clear his head. As a side effect, he's in pretty good shape for his age and pretty confident in his physical abilities. He might not be an acrobat or a dare-devil web-slinger, but he'll have a fair go at some Parkour and can generally keep up with people a few years older than him. He'll just need plenty of fluids and electrolytes after.

Operational Training:
For some, the acronym SMECCS would mean nothing. Sam knows it stands for Summary, Mission, Execution, Command and Control, and Signals. Although it was never his main focus during training, he was nevertheless supposed to know the basics on how to plan, prepare and execute an operation on a variety of scenarios.

By no means a mastermind or cunning operational planner, he does tend to know more about strategy and tactics than those without formal training, can formulate mission plans, and knows what intelligence is needed for a successful mission. He understands the dynamics of a team, and how to make a team work to its full potential.

Technological Affinity:
Sam has 'a thing' for technology. It intrigues him, and he tends to wonder how things work. Luckily for him, being a cyberpath means that often he doesn't need to take something apart to find out what it is or how it works, and his ready access to reference material (at least while somewhere that has network coverage) lets him have a fair go at repairing things that have broken down.

He has the beginnings of a skilled engineer in him, even if his enthusiasm and knowledge don't yet match his experience or skill.

Well Educated:

When HYDRA created Sam, they weren't interested in making just another soldier. He was supposed to blend and know how to behave, and so he had to be conversant in a myriad of different topics, as well as be more than competent in all standard academic pursuits. His high intelligence helped, but there's no denying that studying under some of the brightest mind of a generation with the constant threat of disappointing HYDRA looming over his shoulder tended to make Sam a very diligent student.

He is academically on par with those of his age, and perhaps even a bit advanced in certain topics, notably chemistry and physics. He was also taught some acting skills and how to lie convincingly, as well as etiquette and public speaking. He knows the basics of how to read body language, and can usually gauge the emotional state of someone with sufficient observation.

To round off his education, he speaks fluent Spanish, French and German.

Just... don't ask him to cook, or even just boil an egg. No good can come of it.

Resources

Hydra Agent Training:

In the years that he was active as an agent, Sam has become aware of many HYDRA operations and even participated in a few. He knows locations of safehouses, knows how orders are passed to covert agents and a great deal more than only a true insider of the evil organisation would ever be privy to. He has shared practically all of what he knows with SHIELD, and much of his information might be out of date, but he still knows more than HYDRA would like. He can spot the telltale signs of an operation in progress and predict with a fair degree of accuracy what the next likely steps are going to be, and an incautious double agent might find themselves accidentally exposed when Sam recognises a certain routine they were trained to follow.

Sam also knows of HYDRA's core beliefs, even if he's trying very hard to forget those.

Weaknesses

Ghost:
Officially, Sam was never born. As a result of genetic engineering, his birth was never registered, and he existed off the grid until his capture by SHIELD. This means that any ID he might carry would technically be a fake, as there is no birth certificate to back it up... even if that ID is issued by an official agency. This makes it impossible for him to travel outside of the US without some extraordinary means to cross the border and prohibits him from joining either the armed forces or any other official US agency.

On the day he turns 21, if he can make it that far without his parole being revoked, he will receive an official birth certificate, a social security number and a genuine US passport. Until then, he will remain stateless, and outside of society.

On File:
For want of a better term, Sam is known to certain kinds of people. As part of his release, he was given a police record that lists him as 'Presumed armed' and 'Approach with Caution', and any arrest will immediately trigger a SHIELD response. He needs to keep SHIELD informed of his address, and can expect to have that information checked every so often by an unexpected visit. If he is suspected of being involved in criminal activity, or an incident happens where he might be involved, he can expect to be picked up without warning to explain himself.

There is a good chance that when someone with the right connections needs a cyberpath for official reasons, or needs to pick the brain of a former HYDRA agent, Sam's name is going to come up.

Therapy:
It can't be denied that Sam has significant issues. Having survived a very harsh childhood, and being first indoctrinated and then deprogrammed, he suffers from PTSD and frequent bouts of insomnia due to nightmares. For this he needs counseling and therapy, and depends on medication to manage his condition from day to day.

Traitor:

Sam has committed the ultimate sin against HYDRA: he has betrayed the organisation to its enemies. While capture by the enemy might be forgiven, spilling secrets and turning his back on the cause cannot. As long as Sam is alive, he is a loose end that HYDRA needs and wants to tie up... with extreme prejudice. So far he has been out of their reach, despite best efforts, but now that he has been released, Sam has become a softer target. One way or the other, they will try to silence him permanently.
