|Profile=Born into a family in Mexico that had to cross the border in a hurry thanks to anti-Mutant sentiments growing in her home town, Ainsley has always known loneliness and isolation, even among her own family members due to being the reason they had to flee. Having come to the greater cities in the Northeast meant finding a new life where maybe she didn't have to hide anymore, but her history, alien appearance and frightening abilities make being normal an impossibility.

She could be demonized in an instant, as she saw from the past, and so she avoids the direct attention of the media and lets them formulate their own stories about her where they please.

She used this ability to cross the country, leaving a string of rumors of the 'serpent hitchhiker' in her wake, until she ended up in the big cities in the northeast.
|Personality=Sibilance is a quiet person, and someone quite uncertain of her place in the world. Although she can act with purpose and violence when she needs to, usually she comes across as demure but somewhat friendly. She tries to avoid intimate friendships or prolonged social interaction with 'normal people', due to the attention that's sometimes brought to her snake-like features, and her psionic traits if they are aware of them. This is because she feels an irrational guilt about her appearance brought on by the Catholic beliefs of her family, the rather unfortunate coincidence having given her a fairly miserable complex about it. She doesn't cover herself up anymore, but she often ignores comments made about her appearance and she goes out of her way to avoid using her more odd abilities unless needed.
<br><br>
Underneath all of this, she feels the misery that a lot of young mutants do. She never asked to be different, never asked for these abilities or to be held responsible for simply having them. So she feels a natural anger toward human society, especially toward those that see mutants as inherently dangerous. It isn't just 'human hate,' but a fury that fuels her less elegant moments, and tempts her to do dark things to find any kind of catharsis. After all, it would be easier to just give in and become exactly what those bigots think she is, so she no longer needed to be kind to them.
<br><br>
She just wants to be a good, normal, faithful person. She doesn't want to hurt anyone, emotionally or physically. But the heart isn't that simple, sometimes.

Due to the mental alterations from her mutations, Sibilance does not give of a psionic signature that can be tracked from long distances. While she can be located by those exposed to her, she comes up as invisible on sweeping scans, and passive telepathic abilities are very likely to overlook her as an animal or something similar. Visual confirmation easily breaks these defenses, as well as any concentrated effort to locate her specifically from closer ranges. She simply has an alien mental makeup, so it's hard to pin down. This also makes telepathic contact almost impossible without making physical contact as well.

The ability to issue mental commands by achieving eye contact and speaking aloud. Typically this only works on humans or human-like beings, but can be used to command them to do anything short of acts that run directly against their nature, such as self-harm or the endangerment of loved ones. When such conflicts arise, the mental suggestion creates a short-circuit, and can cause disorientation and headaches instead of the desired effect as impulses conflict with her command.
<br><br>
This effect only lasts up to a ceiling of about six hours, but can be used to make people temporarily forget she exists, or to treat her as a friend, and so on. These changes are never permanent, so she can't alter a memory, only cover it up for a moment. Potentially she can make changes by issuing commands to the same person regularly, but that would require a willing subject. Foes don't want to be exposed to this ability twice.
<br><br>
She must be within about 100 feet of a target to issue the command, and must hold their attention for the whole phrase. Breaking eye contact before she's done cancels the effect.

<br><br>
With physical contact, however, Sibilance can plumb a subject for their deepest thoughts and memories, which can run several risks. First, it can set off unconscious traumas without meaning to, as her ability activates parts of the brain involved with them. Secondly, she may experience negative feedback, and if a subject is harmed during a connection she will feel the same effect twofold, which can be quite the psychic shock. Needless to say, this will strain the link even if she maintains physical contact and render her ability stunted as an instinctual safety measure, and if she does remain in contact to force the matter she is likely to fall unconscious in short order.

She was born a mutant, the youngest of all of her siblings, and her parents immediately thought of abandoning her to avoid the problems raising her would cause. Her appearance was, frankly, not normal.

It didn't take long after they decided to keep her for her family to be driven out of Mexico by superstitious criminals who saw her as the manifestation of the devil. Her family resettled in the Mid-West where opinions on mutants weren't much better but they could at least avoid the drug trade and raise their daughter in peace... though most of the family blamed her for being uprooted from their ancestral home and so she spent a greater chunk of her life feeling alone even among those who were meant to love her.

She had a powerful mind, being a mutant, and absorbed knowledge quickly. It turned out her abilities granted her a head start on most learned skills until it became clear she was a mind reader when she started actively responding to the thoughts of people around her. The fear she felt from the town she lived in forced her to flee, and the stress of this manifested her most chilling ability: She could control any human that made eye contact with her that she could speak to.

She used this ability to cross the country, leaving a string of rumors of the 'serpent hitchhiker' in her wake, until she ended up in the big cities in the northeast.

The ability to issue mental commands by achieving eye contact and speaking aloud. SUPERHUMAN
Due to the extensive physical mutations present in Sibilance, she possessed the ability to lift and throw grown men with her bare hands, to run at about 40 MPH, to leap a couple stories up into the air, but only possesses as much durability as is required to perform these acts safely. Her capacity for utilizing the upper range of her bodily strength is limited, as she could seriously hurt herself in ways a similarly strong hero would not if applied in combat or other extreme situations.

She possesses almost supernatural reflexes, giving her a distinct edge in avoiding the attacks of trained combatants, but she has to be aware of the threat coming and can't dodge bullets. She is also very flexible, in a fashion akin to a contortionist, allowing her to fit into cramped spaces that others would never be able to follow her into.

SHIELD
Sibil is still just a trainee, but she still has access to basic SHIELD resources, such as medical attention and backup from basic personnel.

THE GARDEN

Sibil's hidey-hole, built into her quarters. It has heating to help with her cold-blooded nature, it is full of plants that she tends to on a regular basis, and it has a lot of sunlight and black lights so that the plants remain healthy. Here she can recuperate from a battle, or even research a plant or devise a medical poultice. Her home, and workshop.

Weaknesses

ALIEN
While she is an illegal alien (a Mexican-born citizen), an arrangement with SHIELD allows her to stay in the country thanks to their UN ties. However, she still looks like a snake person and has some mannerisms and traits that people find innately unsettling or wrong or different. Tripping the uncanny valley is a potential problem when interacting with her for any length of time. Her face even looks like a snake's face.

COLD
The cold is detrimental to Sibilance's well-being. Unsurprisingly, being snake-like includes being unable to generate body heat effectively, so she must wear heavy clothing and stick to populated areas where heating systems are common.

DESPAIR
It would be so easy for her to just kill someone. Sometimes, she may go overboard, and do things that contradict her apparent need for some kind of redemption. The anger and disdain she picks up from the worst people in society can be infectious, after all, especially when she can read their thoughts. Bigotry is the quickest way to set her off, and the easiest way to get her to compromise her journey to be good.

ISOLATION
Her mental defenses protect her but also hide her from this psychic individuals that might be able to locate and help her. For instance, Professor Xavier is unlikely to be able to find her unless he saw her in-person. Her own skittish nature also makes her prone to hiding away from those that might want to help her, as she is afraid of what might happen if she grew too comfortable with her abilities or her appearance.

THE LINK

Doing physical harm to someone she is currently controlling will backlash that pain to her threefold, and emotional distress in a controlled individual will disorient her. If a controlled individual's command is broken by a psychic ability, she can sometimes black out or lose all memories since she first started that command, making her abilities very risky to use among those who know how to fight them.
