A freshman on leave from Oxford University, Kitty is an adopted New Yorker, and is taking this break to gather her thoughts regarding her future (i.e., she's waking up at noon and eating cereal for any meal she's allowed, trying to not think too much about how difficult adulting is). She's a little chatty, a little nosy, touch of a yenta, but mostly cheerful. Kitty always comes from a place of good intentions, even if it doesn't always work out that way.
 
She's active in hacktivist communities, something of a computer savant, but keeps her profile low so as not to draw too much attention to herself or her other "activities". While formally a member of Excalibur, she is currently working once again with the X-Men under the alias 'Shadowcat'.
|Description=A slender young woman in her late teens to early twenties, Kitty's soft brown eyes speak of an intelligence and awareness far beyond such tender years. Set in an oval face, her complexion is clear though it's dotted with a lingering freckle here and there. An upturned nose, pouty mouth and pointed chin are framed by thick, brown hair. It's half-pulled back into a pony-tail, the rest left to fall around her shoulders.
|History=Born to Carmen and Theresa Pryde in Deerfield, Illinois, Kitty was just your average supersmart Jewish pre-teen. And then one day, she wasn't. Her mutant power activated and sent her phasing right through her bed and into the first floor of her home -- luckily still in her pajamas instead of naked. Her parents were pretty upset, but they were soon approached by a group of people who represented a very special school in Westchester County, New York. This school would not only give her a stellar mundane educational opportunity but it was also a school for young mutants such as herself, who needed training in the use of an ability that she would have to deal with all her life. Her parents were not informed of the whole heroing in costume aspect of this training regime, but they were thrilled at the educational opportunities for her... and to be brutal, though the love their daughter very much, the idea that she would go away to a boarding school where they didn't have to deal with her mutant status was extremely appealing.
 
The first few months at Xavier's School were rough for her, but Kitty made friends. She excelled in school despite the news that her parents were divorcing now that she was out of the picture. She enjoyed the training offered, and she was eager to prove that she could be an X-Man. Her relationships with the elder students (or most of them, at least) was one of kid sister, and she particularly gravitated toward Logan's rough affection because it offered a no-strings kind of love. She didn't have to *be* anyone for him, he just accepted all the parts of her for exactly what they were. Her first best friend, Illyana, was much the same way -- she had a darkness to her that was horrifying, but Kitty didn't find it to be a reason to treat the other young woman any differently. That situation was enhanced by things that happened to Kitty herself in her mid-teens... a trip to Japan with an evil lunatic inhabiting her brain gave her enhanced martial arts skills, so she had her own darkness to deal with.
 
At the age of 16, Kitty was already taking college-level courses at Xavier's and she determined that perhaps she needed a bit of a break from all of the X-craziness. She applied for and was accepted to Oxford University for computer science and wound up with a degree in both computer science and English literature. While she pursued her education there, she also helped out the local British team Excalibur. It was here she obtained not only a dragon companion but also -- when Illyana basically was killed -- inherited the Soulsword and ties to Limbo. But dealing with the evil lunatic in Japan had given her the mental fortitude to manage herself in light of these events. And the Soulsword returned (thank goodness) to its rightful owner when Illyana was... reborn? reconstituted? Whatever we're calling that. Upon receiving her degrees, Kitty determined that it was high time she went home and took her place among her family again.
|Personality=Katherine Pryde retains the lighthearted smile and enthusiasm that has always characterized her. She enjoys a good time, shopping, dancing, playing around with her dragon, kicking supervillain butts... all of that with a quick wit and a twinkle in her eyes. But like everyone, she has darker places in her soul. And she has a couple of places that are darker than most -- there is a reason her codename is Shadowcat. She is a beautiful, deadly mix of darkness and light. She could have become a villain -- the Japan mind-whammy and her tie to Limbo and the Soulsword could have made her quite evil. But she chooses the Light. Part of that is simply a testament to her very core sense of Self. Part of that is testament to the people around her, like Logan and Illyana and even Jean, who struggle with their own darkness and even when they fall down, they still strive for the Light. They are her inspiration.

Air walking is a basic use of her phasing ability. While phased, she essentially aligns her molecules with those of the air around her and bonds to select ones to form a 'solid' surface for herself. She can 'step' in any direction she wishes to go.

A gas attack will actually render far MORE damage on her in phased form than it would on her solid form, because once she phases back *into* sync, that gas has permeated her molecules all throughout her body (as opposed to having been breathed in).

If Kitty has one major flaw that she will fight her whole life, it is this one. Her experiences in Japan gave her this shard of Darkness at her core. This shard coupled with her inheritance of the Soulsword when Illyana 'died' has fundamentally changed the way that Kitty experiences the world. She has a great deal of Light in her heart, and it is what keeps this shard contained -- she doesn't call upon the Soulsword, she doesn't phase herself into Limbo (can she DO that??? Even she's not sure) and she doesn't do things like ... phase her hand into someone's head or chest and come back out with a chunk of their innards in her fist. She *could*. Whether anyone else realizes it or not, Kitty knows that she *could* if push came to shove. It is one of the strongest links between herself and Logan -- they both know what she *could* be capable of, and she *chooses* every single day to *not* be that. However, it is a vulnerability that could potentially be exploited.

Although being out of phase offers Kitty a great deal of personal protection from attack, it only offers a limited amount of resistance to psi powers or to magical attack. Like all powers, there are down sides to Kitty's phasing. It turns out that being out-of-phase is just as natural a state of being for her as being in-phase. So, if she's using her power and is knocked unconscious, there is an even chance that she could wind up phased-out instead of phased-in. She has been known to phase in her sleep, finding herself on different floors or even in different dorm rooms at college. Sometimes with her clothes, sometimes without. It's quite embarrassing!
 
In addition to this, Kitty could potentially be forced by technological or magical means to phase out of this reality. At present time, so far, she has remained here in this world when she phases -- but does she have the ability to literally molecular-ly shift herself between planes of existence? She honestly has NO idea.
 
She does not currently know how much mass she can phase with her when she goes. An average-sized human, she has actually taken with her -- to phase them through the ground, as an example, requires that they hold their breath, though. It is possible that she herself could run out of air in that phased state and be rendered unconscious. Even she doesn't know what could happen if that were to occur. HOWEVER, she does know the very real dangers of the possibility of phasing back into phase with this reality inside a solid or liquid substance -- it is a very real possibility that she could be killed should such a thing happen.

It's half-pulled back into a pony-tail, the rest left to fall around her shoulders.
|History=Born to Carmen and Theresa Pryde in Deerfield, Illinois, Kitty was just your average supersmart Jewish pre-teen. And then one day, she wasn't. Her mutant power activated and sent her phasing right through her bed and into the first floor of her home -- luckily still in her pajamas instead of naked. Her parents were pretty upset, but they were soon approached by a group of people who represented a very special school in Westchester County, New York. This school would not only give her a stellar mundane educational opportunity but it was also a school for young mutants such as herself, who needed training in the use of an ability that she would have to deal with all her life. Her parents were not informed of the whole heroing in costume aspect of this training regime, but they were thrilled at the educational opportunities for her... and to be brutal, though the love their daughter very much, the idea that she would go away to a boarding school where they didn't have to deal with her mutant status was extremely appealing.
 
The first few months at Xavier's School were rough for her, but Kitty made friends. She excelled in school despite the news that her parents were divorcing now that she was out of the picture. She enjoyed the training offered, and she was eager to prove that she could be an X-Man. Her relationships with the elder students (or most of them, at least) was one of kid sister, and she particularly gravitated toward Logan's rough affection because it offered a no-strings kind of love. She didn't have to *be* anyone for him, he just accepted all the parts of her for exactly what they were. Her first best friend, Illyana, was much the same way -- she had a darkness to her that was horrifying, but Kitty didn't find it to be a reason to treat the other young woman any differently. That situation was enhanced by things that happened to Kitty herself in her mid-teens... a trip to Japan with an evil lunatic inhabiting her brain gave her enhanced martial arts skills, so she had her own darknesses to deal with.
 
At the age of 16, Kitty was already taking college-level courses at Xavier's and she determined that perhaps she needed a bit of a break from all of the X-craziness. She applied for and was accepted to Oxford University for computer science and wound up with a degree in both computer science and English literature. While she pursued her education there, she also helped out the local British team Excalibur. It was here she obtained not only a dragon companion but also -- when Illyana basically was killed -- inherited the Soulsword and ties to Limbo. But dealing with the evil lunatic in Japan had given her the mental fortitude to manage herself in light of these events. And the Soulsword returned (thank goodness) to its rightful owner when Illyana was... reborn? reconstituted? Whatever we're calling that. Upon receiving her degrees, Kitty determined that it was high time she went home and took her place among her family again.

This shard coupled with her inheritance of the Soulsword when Illyana 'died' has fundamentally changed the way that Kitty experiences the world. She has a great deal of Light in her heart, and it is what keeps this shard contained -- she doesn't call upon the Soulsword, she doesn't phase herself into Limbo (can she DO that??? Even she's not sure) and she doesn't do things like ... phase her hand into someone's head or chest and come back out with a chunk of their innards in her fist. She *could*. Whether anyone else realizes it or not, Kitty knows that she *could* if push came to shove. It is one of the strongest links between herself and Logan -- they both know what she *could* be capable of, and she *chooses* every single day to *not* be that. However, it is a vunerability that could potentially be exploited.

Although being out of phase offers Kitty a great deal of personal protection from attack, it only offers a limited amount of resistance to psi powers or to magical attack. These methods might take just a short time longer to enact on her, but they do get through and at that point she takes the same amount of damage as any other human.

Like all powers, there are down sides to Kitty's phasing. It turns out that being out-of-phase is just as natural a state of being for her as being in-phase. So, if she's using her power and is knocked unconscious, there is an even chance that she could wind up phased-out instead of phased-in. She has been known to phase in her sleep, finding herself on different floors or even in different dorm rooms at college. Sometimes with her clothes, sometimes without. It's quite embarrassing!
 
In addition to this, Kitty could potentially be forced by technological or magical means to phase out of this reality. At present time, so far, she has remained here in this world when she phases -- but does she have the ability to literally molecularly shift herself between planes of existance? She honestly has NO idea.
 
She does not currently know how much mass she can phase with her when she goes. An average-sized human, she has actually taken with her -- to phsae them through the ground, as an example, requires that they hold their breath, though. It is possible that she herself could run out of air in that phased state and be rendered unconscious. Even she doesn't know what could happen if that were to occur. HOWEVER, she does know the very real dangers of the possibility of phasing back into phase with this reality inside a solid or liquid substance -- it is a very real possibility that she could be killed should such a thing happen.
