Good Boys in a Park
Date of Scene: 21 November 2019
Location: Central Park, Manhattan
Synopsis: And a wintery wonderland was had by all.
Cast of Characters: Samuel Morgan, Cannonball, Nightingale, Icarus, Rage

Samuel Morgan has posed:
Central park! Nexus of nature on Manhattan, the quintessential platonic ideal of a park within a city. You can't visit Manhattan and /not/ see it, that would be blasphemous. And yet, on all his previous occasions on this small island in New York, Bean had never once set foot in it. Now, it seems, he's finally getting his chance, and with him is the other creature he holds so dear that is probably even more excited to be here.

    It had finally happened...

Out on the grass, off the leash, Bear was bounding after the ball that Bean had just launched, running and jumping to catch his toy. Just another boy playing with his dog in the early evening... A backpack with all the necessities leaning against a tree, including Bear's rolled up service jacket and the lead that the city required all dogs to be on when not in the park. A scene of utter normality. Finally.

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie has came along, and actually brought another dog toy for Sam to try out at some point a frisbee. He finds a seat nearby watching though for now. It is good to see the young man having fun and thinks this play might be good for both boy and dog.

Samuel Morgan has posed:
It's hard to figure out who's having more fun, Bear or Bean. At any rate, the ball flies a decent way and rarely has a chance to bounce before it is caught with a deft 'chomp'. Bear might not be a military dog, but someone has made sure that he was no lap dog either. Dashing back, he runs directly in Bean's kneeling hug, gives the ball back, and almost immediately it gets thrown far again, this time with both dog and boy racing after it.

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie looks over and says "Hey Bean, catch." He will say and wings the frisbee to the other Sam. "See how well he does with this one." He does send it off a little to the side, so Sam will have to move to get it not wanting to him him when he is not expecting it.

Samuel Morgan has posed:
There is nothing more enjoyable than some energetic exercise. Bean hangs a left and jumps for the frisbee, rolling as he lands and throwing it back the other way. "Fetch boy!" Bear, in tearing good spirits, bounds after the new toy, tongue lolling as he runs, enjoying the chase of something that flies so much further.

Nightingale has posed:
With the holiday season upon the world, a little road trip to Central Park could well turn into an occasion. The magic of the park with a blanket of snow was something to behold, every sound, every bit of laughter hushed by the season. There were twinkling white lights threaded amongst the trees, and the paths and byways were dotted with various vendors of seasonal culinary delights. The third member of the party, Shannon, had gone to partake of said delights, finding both a hot cocoa vendor and someone actually selling roasted chestnuts out of a little cart, piping hot. She rejoins the boys with a little cardboard carrier full of the hot cocoas for all, and four little bags of the chestnuts, grinning. From beneath her red and white striped knit cap, so very much like a 'Where's Waldo' hat, there's a... bit of blue? Yes, a bit of blue, a few shades darker than a glacier, plaited into a thin braid with four little silver beads on the end. "I come bearing gifts!" she calls out as she joins them, her breath freezing in front of her face.

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie is in sitting at a picnic table that he has cleaned the snow from. He will take one of the cups of coco. "Well I figure we can spend a bit of time letting the two of them play and then maybe do bit of christmas shopping maybe even stop by the plaza so you guys can see it.

Icarus has posed:
There have only been a few outings from the school for Jay. Most of the time when he leaves the campus, he's heading to work at the club. So this has been a different sort of afternoon for him. He had wandered off for a bit to do a little window shopping but he coordinated and wandered over to Central Park when he was done, to meet up with the group already there.

He's dressed in his usual baggy jeans with boots instead of sneakers. Layers were the order of the day so he had a tshirt on but it was hidden under a bulky gray sweat shirt which was visible at the collar of his red and black plaid winter coat. There was no sign of his wings anywhere, safely hidden under the oversized clothing.

Samuel Morgan has posed:
On the snowy lawn, with absolutely no care in the world, Bean and Bear are throwing a frisbee... that is to say, one is throwing the frisbee, the other is catching and fetching. But there's an equal amount of just running around, general horseplay and... well, basically, the kind of joy of every boy with a dog that has never been to the park before. He might not even have seen Shannon come back yet, but the general confused motion of play is starting to head back to the picnic table.

Nightingale has posed:
Smiling warmly, Shannon wiggles a wing at Jay, waving over at him as she's settling down at the picnic table with Sam. She's got her favorite tunic sweater on (and very likely layers beneath for warmth, but only her hairdresser knows for sure!), dark blue jeans, and knee-length caramel suede boots. She's also got a goofy red and white striped knit cap with a pompom on the end, reminiscent of 'Where's Waldo'. And there is that icy blue braid, distinct from the rest of her hair, hanging down on the left side of her face, with three little silver beads on the end. "Hey, Jay! You just made it for some cocoa and roasted chestnuts! Got us enough for everybody!"

She smiles as she watches Bean and Bear play, wishing for a moment she could thank those who had helped her friend. But the message had been relayed; it was enough for now.

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie looks over, and says "Find anything interesting Jay?" He picks up a chestnut, and says "You know these things are ok, but as big a pain in the butt as they are to get into or walk around the tree, they should be like made of honey and bacon or something."

Icarus has posed:
"Bacon. Makes everything in the world better. When they talk about ambrosia and stuff in mythology, I'm positive it tastes like bacon," Jay comments as he accepts one of the cocoas and pulls it over in front of him. He does have on gloves but the type that have the phone friendly fingertips. Wouldn't do to have to take them off should he start texting. "Yeah, just getting a few ideas for presents."

Samuel Morgan has posed:
It seems even the mere talk of food may summon the Bean, because he arrives at the table, panting happily, with an equally pleasantly tired Bear in tow. With a happy sigh, the mutant sits on the bench and breathes deeply, using both hands to ruffle Bear's head as it peeks up at him from under the table. "Good boy! Frisbee..." a hand held out, and the toy is obediently returned, earning the canine another furious scritching. "Good boy! Good boy, Bear."

"Whew. Ooh, is that hot cocoa?" How Bean is keeping warm may be anyone's guess, dressed much the same as usual except for the addition of a decidedly second hand jacket and an unmarked baseball cap. Maybe it's just pure energy right now? Hot liquid may help as he starts to drink, enjoying the slight sting of heat on his tongue.

Nightingale has posed:
"And some roasted chestnuts," Shannon adds, giggling as she offers a bag to each at the table. "I couldn't resist. You hear it in the song all the time this time of year. So I wanted to try them." Indeed, her spirits seem much buoyed by the company, as she regards each one in turn. How had they become so dear to her in so short a time? It gave her hope that miracles could and perhaps somewhere in the world, still did happen.

The mention of Christmas shopping gets her grinning, and she gently nudges Jay. "Hey now, no spoilers on the presents. But, definitely agreed on the bacon!"

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie smiles and says "Just if ya buy anything make sure ya hold onto it well chasing something across New York can suck." He says from experience. he is wearing a decent fleece jacket, and has pulled out one of the hats with ear flaps. He smiles and says "Christmas in the big city is nice, but Ah am glad the school has caroling planned for the neighbors, that reminds me of home.

Icarus has posed:
"I missed there was caroling planned. May sign up for that. Was always something I enjoyed." Jay sips his cocoa cautiously, blowing across the surface before taking that taste. He feels the nudge and smirks a bit. "I never spoil Christmas. I have been known to hide presents out in the woods so the littles couldn't find them before the big day. And I'm the one that uses three rolls of tapes when wrapping."

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon snickers, and grins wide. "You could always tell what presents my folks wrapped and which ones were mine by the amount of tape used on each one. They also had a big bin of little decorations for the presents and let me fancy them up a bit after they were done wrapping. We'd save decorations from year to year. Little jingle bells, ribbon roses that I made with some silk ribbon, floral wire, and florist's tape...." She sighs a little bit but smiles, saying nothing more for a few moments. "You know, Jay... I have yet to hear you sing. Heard tell you're really good."

Sam gets a smile and a little tilt of her head. "Curious, what holiday traditions are there in the Guthrie clan, since we're kind of doing the whole holiday thing here?"

Glancing over to Bean, she lofts her eyebrows, then glances at Bear, and back again, but makes no move to pet the Shepherd. Not yet.

Samuel Morgan has posed:
Ah yes. Presents. Bean goes a bit quiet at the mention, having no money except for what he earns with chores in the school... well... there is still the money he stole from the ATM a few weeks back, but aside from the jacket and cap, he hadn't touched it. Somehow he felt ill at ease spending it. But at the mention of bacon, there is a very interested 'whurf?' from under the table, and Bear pokes his head out between Jay and Shannon. Bean smiles at Shannon and nods. That dog is still very much in play mode.

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie smiles and seems to remember Jay's wrapping and says "I will wrap yours in zipties you get any ideas." He smirks at his brother. "Well once we hit 15 we got to help on Christmas night. " He chuckles and says "Remember the year "Santa fell off the roof? Found out Uncle Lucas had decided we should have sleigh trail and hoof prints on the roof."

Icarus has posed:
Jay bursts out laughing at the memory. "Pretty sure 'Santa' had been into some moonshine before climbing up there. Denied it but Ma had that look when she was dealing with him later. It was always fun getting to help with the magic for the littles."

At the sound from Bear, he has to grin. "Sorry, buddy. Don't have any bacon at the moment." He gives an apologetic shrug to Bean. "You'll have to get him some when we get back. Make up for us teasing him."

He glanced over at Shannon as he picked up his cup, blowing over the surface a moment. "Surprised you haven't. I'm singing pretty often. Glee club, the music room, the dorms." Both dorms but he isn't admitting to spending any time in the girls' side.

Nightingale has posed:
"Maybe a little during Glee Club... I haven't really been paying as much attention there as I should. Been trying to keep my Friday afternoons clear for... stuff." Yeah, it's venturing into school stuff, so Shannon's being a little vague. "Kind of glad you were able to come along... really haven't gotten to see you but maybe twice outside of that."

The talk of 'Santa' has her chuckling a little bit, and she shrugs. "I stopped believing in Santa when I was six, but I kept up the charade so mom and dad wouldn't feel bad about it. Come on, when you recognize your mom's handwriting on presents marked 'From Santa'..."

Bear is favored with an ear scritching to end all ear scritches, and a soft chuckle from the winged girl. "We'll get you some bacon when we get back home, if your human approves it."

Samuel Morgan has posed:
Ah yes. Bean is enjoying the warm drink and staying out of this conversation. It touches on domestic experiences that he never shared. It's utterly fascinating to listen to, however, like listening to an completely foreign culture being explained through anecdotes.

Bear for his part isn't going to be content with the ear scritching alone and lays his head on Shannon's lap, giving Jay the most pitiful of puppy dog eyes that seem to ask why there can't be bacon now...

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie has picked up a habit with the new two dogs at the school and Lockheed being around. He will reach into one of his inside pockets and pull out a plastic bag, looking to Sam and at an ok, will pull out a piece of deer jerky handing it to Jay "Not bacon, but bet he will be ok with that." He says, and says "Figure when we head home for Christmas will stop in Eddysville, and see Uncle Lucas, and maybe take him a care package. Thought maybe a few new books would be good for him."

Icarus has posed:
"I know I'm not supposed to give him treats so." Jay takes the jerky but passes it right over to Bean. "Don't want to mess up his training but I know you can get away with it. Although venison jerky, that's a lucky dog I'm not keeping it all to myself."

"Yeah, he'd probably like that. He's been through the library so many times already," he says to Sam. Back to Shannon, he gives a nod. "Well come by Glee club. Or the music room. I think Sam mentioned you were wanting to learn guitar? Or was that Andrea who mentioned it? Can't remember now but someone mentioned it."

Nightingale has posed:
"Actually, it might've been both of them. Been kind of fiddling with it on my own since Sam's ladyfriend got me going on it. It took so ummmm... well, let's just say I'm going to have a very homemade Christmas this year instead. Found a decent guitar." Shannon grins a little bit sheepishly and shrugs, ruffling her wings a bit.

Bear's head in her lap is oddly soothing, and she smiles a bit, continuing the gentle ear scritches. "Hey," she murmured. "Thought you were supposed to be helping your human there."

Her eyebrows go up, and she turns back to Sam, as if something forgotten had just been remembered. "Don't let me forget to give you those aprons you wanted when we get back. Couldn't sleep well for a couple nights, so I managed to knock them off my project list."

Samuel Morgan has posed:
Bean shakes his head at Jay. "Nah, go on, you give those to him. He's earned it." Which, of course, means Bear will have to wait fractionally longer, but at least Jay will be able to do something about those wide puppy eyes. "He likes helping people relax, Shannon. That's why he's so good at it."

One more sip, and then the gambit across the table. "Jay... could you teach someone who has never even touched an instrument to play the guitar? Everyone seems to play something and... I dunno, I'm going to need a new project. One that isn't gunsmithing or target shooting." With a glance over to Sam. "Although if that offer still stands, I'd like to get started on that in the new year or so."

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie nods and says "Yea, we can do some of that, heck get you and Jay a hunting license and we might go do some bow hunting to restock the supply of venison, just gotta make sure we aint in the area Logan hangs out, he sorta considered it his place. But yea we can work on your rifle work soon, speaking of that. Jay, Ah was thinking we could head over to Ithaca next week, and maybe get Jeb a decent shotgun, Ah figure we can find a nice one at some of the pawn shops over there since the fctory is there.

Icarus has posed:
"Nothing wrong with a homemade Christmas. Those are some of the best gifts. Shows the heart that you took the time to make them. We had lots of those back home and probably will for the future. I mean, there's a lot of us and money can only stretch so far in the house." Jay says to Shannon.

At the okay from Bean, he puts a small piece of jerky in his palm and offers it to Bear. Small enough he won't go choking on it if he swallows it whole, like most dogs tend to do with yummies.

At mention of a trip to Ithaca, he nods. "Yeah, think it's about time he got his own. Good idea. Their shops probably are just swimming in them, unlike back home where you are lucky to find one."

Nightingale has posed:
Taking a sip of her cocoa, Shannon smiles a little bit and nods. "Yeah, I hear you there. So many more people to make presents for this year with a whole lot less notice than before, though. This is gonna be insane... but the best kind of insanity." Her smile widens, and she nods to the Guthrie gentlemen. "Now, you made it easy to make something for your ma there..." Now her gaze encompasses Bean as well, and she grins. "...but you three men are /impossible/ to make things for! Give me some clues here, Christmas is coming fast!" One hand remains on Bear's head, administering the ear scritching that is as soothing and comforting for human as it seems to be for canine.

Samuel Morgan has posed:
"I've got everything I could ever need." Bean smiles, just watching his three friends (and Bear). "And more than I ever thought I'd have this Christmas."

As well behaved as Bear is, he can't resist the delicious morsel that is held out. As expected, the Shepherd chomps down on the venison and chomps a few more times to get the most flavor out of it before swallowing the treat. But that's not all, oh no, Jay has earned himself a few licks across the hand as well.

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie smiles and says "Ah got Shannon to make Ma a couple Aprons in the Guthrie clan colors, thought she would get a kick out of it. For me? You aint gotta get or make me something, spend the time you would on making me something on the younger kids at the school. Heck might be asking ya to make some gloves for the new kid we picked up today.

Nightingale has posed:
"Samuel Zachary Guthrie!!! You are NOT getting away without a present this year, so don't even give me that bunch of malarkey!" Shannon's wings are starting to spread out to nearly their full span, but at least her feathers are not ruffled, and there is no molting involved. "Same goes for you, Jay. And you, Bean. My gift to the other kids this year is being here and helping make this a good Christmas for them. So please. Please let me make something for each of you?"

Icarus has posed:
As Shannon goes off on Sam, Jay is hiding his smile behind his cup of cocoa. Until his name gets thrown out there too. "Hey! I didn't do nothin'!"

Course, he would've but now that the grumpiness has kicked in, he'll keep his mouth shut. Instead, he looks down at his now thoroughly licked palm and puts another small piece of jerky there to offer Bear.

Samuel Morgan has posed:
There is a sharp whistle from Bean as another piece of jerky gets offered to Bear. The Shepherd looks over, sees the look on his human's face, and knows exactly what it means. Without hesitation, Bear places one paw on Jay's knee and gives a 'whurf' of thanks for the first treat. Now, and only now, he's free to eat the second. Omnom /chomp/. This time the canine gives Jay a bump with his head and then trots back over to Bean.

"There's literally nothing I possibly want, Shannon. But thank you. And yes, gloves for Nathaniel is probably a good idea, the poor guy."

Rage has posed:
Making her way into the park is Andrea as she walks along the paths of the blustery day. She is wearing a large green parka with a fuzzy hood over a two layer t-shirts and some jeans. She is tapping away at her phone with a pensive look upon her face. She kicks a stone down along the path, left to right as she goes, heading towards the group as she spies them.

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie looks up and seeing Andrea walking over he will offer her a wave as he sips his coco, and says "Ok Ah will think about it, but aint us picking out our presents even if you make them a bit of a cop out so you don't have to think what we would like?" He will tease back towards Shannon.

Nightingale has posed:
"You might not have done anything, but you sure didn't give any hints as to what you might want for Christmas, Jay. Please? Pretty please?" Shannon turns her best Puss-In-Boots eyes on him, sniffling. And sighing. Shamlessly. But when Bear goes trotting off, that reassuring presence goes away, and the sigh is a little more real. "Don't think that you're escaping Christmas, Samuel Morgan, no matter what protestations you might make." Okay, so maybe only two names involved there, but give a girl a break--it was the best she could do at the moment!

Andrea gets a wave and a grin, the winged girl shaking her head a little bit to make her icy blue braid wiggle about like it was some sort of odd appendage bedecked with silver beads on the end. "Hey there! Come on over and sit a spell!"

Raised eyebrows are the order of the moment as she peers back over at Sam, chuckling. "Not a cop-out to try and get hints from... oh, FINE, but you just made a lot of late nights for me, the both of you!" The last, though, is chased with a soft chortle.

Icarus has posed:
As Bear trots off, Jay wipes his palm off on his pants leg. Because dog slobber. Not that he minds it but he was trying to reach for his phone when he heard the call out to Andrea. Turning, he gave her a smile in greeting. "Sit a spell. Have some cocoa." He offers his own cup. "You can start with this one. I'll go get everyone another round," he offers.

At Shannon's begging, he gives a sigh. "I'll try to think of something. Although just a nice batch of cookies would be enough to make me happy. Doesn't have to be anything fancy."

Samuel Morgan has posed:
As much as Bear likes hanging around as many people as he can, the whistle seemed to indicate more than just a reminder to mind his manners. Treats were, of course, perfectly okay after all that play, but there also had to be a time when play time ended. And it seems like Bean is starting the process from one to the other, giving Bear some time to get back into his working mindset, especially if they were going out shopping later.

"Cookies, now that's an idea..." Oh woe betide the kitchen. Last time Bean made cookies, there was dough on the ceiling. The actual ceiling!

Rage has posed:
Brushing her hair away from her face, Andrea tilts her head up at the voices and offers a smile. "Hey guys." She says as she tilts her head to each in turn. When Jay offers his cup to her, she hesitates for a moment, then reaches out to take it form him. "No cooties?" She asks him as she gently bumps up against his shoulder. Bringing it to her lips for a small sip, she settles in upon a bench, folding one leg over the other. "What's going on?"

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie says, "Just thought we would let Bean and Bear get a little fun in here at the park. Did a little Christmas shopping, planning on a little bit more, maybe hitting rockafella. Thought I would show them a bit of what New York does for Christmas and all. " He offers a smile and sips his coca. "What you out and about doing today?""

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon stifles a giggle at Bean's mention of cookies, giving him a knowing grin. She says nothing out loud on the matter, but nothing needs to be. Some things are just too good for words. However, it does give her an idea of what she can do for him for Christmas, and she grins even wider.

Andrea gets a grin and a giggle, and she nods towards the cup. "No cooties and no calories. See, if the cocoa's from someone else's cup, the calories don't count, right?"

Icarus has posed:
At the question from Andrea, there is a grin from Jay. "All the cooties. I even put some extras in there just for you." He then climbs up from the table. "I'll be back in a minute with fresh cocoa for everyone. Andrea, you want some chestnuts? Not that I've eaten mine. Anyone else what anything else?"

Seems he's willing to take orders but once everyone gives him input, off he'll go to get the goodies.

Rage has posed:
"I'm okay, no thanks." Andrea says in regards to nuts, not even making a joke about it. Though it was rather low hanging fruit. She taps away on her phone a bit more as she puts the cocoa next to her on the bench. "No calories, huh? I wish."

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie waits till Jay has stepped away and says "You could make an inside cover or outside cover for one of his guitars perhaps." He offers as help to Shannon "Ah still need to figure out what Ah am going to get him." He looks to them and says "A little extra calories aint gonna hurt any of us, Ah do believe we burn them off, and if your not sure you will, Ah can make sure ya do." He smiles.

Nightingale has posed:
"If there's any soft pretzels anywhere, that'd be fantastic. Or sweet treats." Shannon offers Jay a grateful smile, closing her wings in behind her. But the minute Jay's out of sight...

"Ooooo... good idea, Sam. Or maybe a little pouch to hold all his guitar picks and things like his capo and everything. You are brilliant!" There's a positively wicked little cackle from the girl, and she takes a quick sip of her cocoa.

But even that wicked cackling doesn't last, as she looks over at Andrea. Her smile fades, and her brows furrow with concern. "Hey there," she says, her voice low. "Everything okay? You seem a little... distracted."

Rage has posed:
"I'm distracted." Andrea confirms as she glides her thumbs along her phone. "I'm just chatting with a few friends from back home since they're three hours behind in California." She tucks her phone back into her pocket, then picks up her cocoa and takes another sip. She warms her palms by the cup she holds, rocking side to side on the bench.
