Taking Turns Paying for Food, That's What People Do
Date of Scene: 01 December 2019
Location: Katz's Deli, Lower East Side
Synopsis: Vi treats Clint and Captain America as a thank you for their help when she first came to America
Cast of Characters: Vi, Hawkeye (Barton), Captain America

Vi has posed:
Vi had not made very many phone calls so far. So she'd sat there rehearsing what she was going to say when she'd called Clint. A simple invitation to lunch. Katz's Deli. She had it written down like a script, a combination of letters and little drawings that would remind her.

The call had gone far better than she'd worried, and plans were made to meet up at Katz's. Vi arrives in an Uber arranged by a friend. She's wearing jeans and a t-shirt, with a heavier winter jacket overtop, and gloves. Her hair is left loose. She stands over near the door, stamping her boots against the cold as she watches people go in and out, keeping an eye out for Clint. A Sunday on Thanksgiving weekend might not have been the best choice of timing. The place is /busy/ today.

Hawkeye (Barton) has posed:
The call had gone very well, Clint could tell Vi was nevous about it so he made it easy on her and really with Skye out of town on the mission to find her mom, he could use the company.

So at a little past the appointed hour Clint Barton climbs out of a cab in front of Katz's Deli, the archer is super subtle with his wardrobe choice, a black motorcycle racing jacket with purple highlights and a knit cap with an H on it.

Spotting Vi, he lifts his hand in a wave, "Heya," he greets. "Thanks for the invite, been in New York for years but I've still only seen this place in 'When Harry Met Sally'," he says with a grin.

Vi has posed:
Vi's head swings from side to side, as she waits, and it only takes her a moment to spot Clint's approach. The petite nineteen year old's face lights up as she spots him. She lifts a hand to wave back as he approaches her. "I'm glad you could make it," she tells him. "People take turns providing food for people they like," she adds. "And you and Miss May had me for dinner, and I wanted you to know I appreciated it." Vi tells him, giving him that sort of smile that people get when they feel they are doing something nice for someone else.

Vi motions to the door and says, "There's been a lot of people going in and out." She'll pass inside the door if Clint is coming. That's when the sounds and smells of the place hit her.

Loud, loud, loud. People are crammed into the tables and talking to each other, voices raised to be heard. The cooks behind the counters are calling to each other and to customers. And on the TV, the Cowboys are in town visiting the Giants which makes for occasional groans or cheers going up.

But even more than the sounds, for Vi, are the smells. Delicious savory smells of roasted meats and fresh baked buns are enough to make her mouth salivate. The sheer bustle of it has her hesitating a moment, trying to make out where they are supposed to go, or what they are supposed to do. There are signs to give those directions, but reading still requires a conscious act by Vi, and right now she's a little overwhelmed by all the sensory input. Thank goodness she wasn't burning her tin to heighten her senses, at the moment.

Hawkeye (Barton) has posed:
There's a grin for Vi's explanation for the dinner invite, "That's right, and thank you for the invite, it's appreciated," he says stepping out of the way as a couple leaves the restaurant, the smell of the food wofting out with them.

Clint follows Vi inside, taking in the crowds and noise, he grins it reminded him of the bustle of the circus. His scan of the place is interupted by a little girl tugging on the leather of his coat.

"A-are you Hawkeye?" she asks, her parents giving apologetic smiles from their table. Clint ducks down to the girl's level, "Yes I am," he says. "What's your name?"

"Sarah," the girl answers. "Well Sarah, this is my friend Vi and we're about to have lunch, would you like a picture?"

She nods, holding out her father's phone, Clint nods giving the parents a little nod and smile, as if to say it's cool. "Sure thing," he says to Sarah, before looking to Vi and asking. "You want in on this?" he asks taking the phone from Sarah and setting it up for a selfie.

Captain America has posed:
A lull between the crowds (visitors from out of town/state/country to the city) and between errands has the Captain dropping by the Deli. He intends to get, well, a little bit of everything to go -- he'll stash food at the Triskelion and like as not share some with Barnes for the sake of nostalgia.

Because rations...nobody misses those.

As such, he's a broad-shouldered presence in the front door suddenly, slipping in on a short gust of colder air. His scarf is a plain thing, brown and white striped, tucked into his black motorcycle jacket. Jeans and combat boots complete the look. He lifts his shoulders up just a touch against a shiver -- brisk for riding the bike today -- and notes the familiar man fiddling with the cell phone.

Sidling at a distance into Clint's peripheral vision, he then lifts a hand in silent greeting, wearing a small smile. He recognizes a selfie when he sees one. Vi is given a nod of greeting as well; he remembers the initial rescue well.

Vi has posed:
The approach of the little girl gets a soft smile from Vi. Younger kids seem to put her at ease far more than the rest of the multitude of New Yorkers in numbers that she can scarce believe. "Hello Sarah. Happy Thanksgiving," Vi tells the girl, shining the smile over to her.

The mention of Hawkeye gets a curious look from Vi, but she doesn't ask. And the offer of getting in on the picture yields a quick, double handed wave off from Vi. "Oh, no, I'm no one you want in your picture," she says, giving Sarah a little grin as she does.

Vi moves just a bit out of the way, which is when she spots Steve Rogers come in. It takes her just a second to recognize him, and was it nod for the overt nod, he might have made it past her without Vi noticing. But she does, smiling quickly and giving him a little wave back. Vi has filled out a little bit, she was overly thin when Steve first encountered her, but now she looks much more appropriate for a girl of her admittedly small build and short height. "Hello, it's nice to see you again. We were just going to have lunch. Would you like to join us?" Vi asks.

Hawkeye (Barton) has posed:
"Happy Thanksgiving," Sarah offers to Vi.

Clint catches sight of Steve in his peripherals and he grins, "Well today's you're lucky day, Sarah," he tells the girl. He looks up at Steve nodding at him, "That guy there is Captain America," he explains and when she looks up to see him Sarah's eyes go wide, she didn't see him before and now that she has she doesn't need to be told who Steve is.

"Hey Cap you want in on this?" Clint asks guessing the answer. "And no dice, Vi, you're in this picture now come on down here with the rest of us," he says even as he beckons Sarah to stand next to where he crouches and let the others join him.

Captain America has posed:
Steve's smile shifts into good-natured knowing, his lips hooking up a little higher on one side. He didn't think he stood half a chance at getting out of the selfie opportunity as is, even if he's not overtly obvious in the crowd. A few steps bring him over to join the ground, hands now hooked on his coat pockets by his thumbs.

"Can't stay for long, unfortuantely, but needed some air 'nd some good food," the man explains to Vi. He gives young Sarah a far kinder smile, something more good-ol'-boy-next-door. "It's nice to meet you. I hope you had a good holiday. I'll step into the selfie real quick, if you don't mind."

He gets down at a comfortable height on the other side of Sarah, so she's framed by the two Avengers, and beckons to Vi.

Vi has posed:
Vi isn't used to taking pictures, but she moves over to join them with Clint and Steve gesture for her to join them. She steals peaks at the two men to see what they are doing in the picture and then tries to emulate them. Crouching down a bit too, though not having to go nearly as far. Seeing smiles, Vi puts one on her face too.

Sarah's parents are just beaming, and her mother pulls out her phone and videotapes the selfie being captured. Mother and father look at each other, and they each wrap an arm around the other. This moment is going to be part of family lore after this, no doubt.

A groan goes up from the crowd as the Giants fumble and the Cowboys recover. "Ya buncha bums!" one guy yells at the TV mounted up near the ceiling. Vi glances over in surprise, and that's probably the expression that gets captured on her face in the selfie.

Hawkeye (Barton) has posed:
Clint looks up as Cap says he won't be staying long, "Getting a salami to send your boy in the army?" he asks with a grin. It had been a popular campaign put on by the Deli during the war, and there was a neon sign with the slogan behind the counter. Clint makes a face though as he says, "Jeeze, they must not have inuendo back in the day, huh?" he jokes, hoping it goes over Sarah's head.

As for the selfie, yep, Vi gets to have that face saved forever. Clint is a pro at this by this point, and grins and points at Sarah trying to make her the star of the shot.

Then when it's over he gives Sarah a smile and shakes hands with her parents, before rejoining the lunch line. "Go ahead of us Steve if you're just picking something up," he tells Cap handing him one of the lunch tickets and another to Vi, explaining to the girl. "So, way I hear it you go around to the stations you want to try, give them the ticket, they write down what you got, and then you bring it to the register there," he says pointing it out. "Pretty simple."

Captain America has posed:
Quietly, the Captain replies to Clint, "Heard some back when that'd put you in a corner with your ears on fire, Barton." He smiles almost secretively regardless as to not draw further attention to their discussion. Must spare the youngins.

He's certain to also briefly greet Sarah's parents after the selfie is complete -- he dimpled in the shot, content to do so given the sheer sparkling joy it appears to have brought Sarah -- and does take up position in front of them, given he's simply passing through.

"Yep. Pick whatever you want," he tacks on to the end of Clint's explanation as to the process of the Deli. He's already working at his collection of food-to-go, ignoring any whispers and stares with the grace of long-practiced patience.

Vi has posed:
Vi gives Clint a grateful smile as he explains how the system works. "The kitchen at the school we usually just go get what we want. Or it's set out where we can put it on plates ourselves. No ration cards at all," she tells him.

Vi just smiles to the parents and gives them a soft wave. The mother takes some video of Vi too. No doubt they'll be going through pictures of Avengers later trying to figure out if she's in there. It will be a long search!

Vi nods to Steve as he adds to the explanation. "I was told the hot pastrami was 'to die for' and I should definitely give that a try while I'm here," she tells them.

Vi glances back to Steve and says, "I'd like to pay for this, if I could?" She pulls out a stack of bills which are not really crumbled so much as a little wadded up. "It would be a way to say thank you for... the day I came ashore," she says.

Hawkeye (Barton) has posed:
Clint laughs softly at Cap's retort. "I bet," he says, keeping things low key, so as not to corrupt the youth of America.

As they get about the business of picking out food, Clint asks Cap, "How have things been?" he says. "Per usual I haven't been able to stop by the mansion as often as I'd like."

"Well, not exactly ration cards, they're just writing down how much you owe them," he says or well Cap will owe them since it sounds like he's taking care of Vi's bill. Or not as Vi seems to press the issue.

He leaves the matter of paying to them and speaks to the pastrami, "So I hear," he says with a grin. "Anyhow go ahead and grab what you like."

Captain America has posed:
"Keep the money for now," Steve politely defers as to the offer for Vi to pay. "This'll be a large bill to pay, 'nd I'd rather see to it being all on my account. Part of it's technically a job purchase anyways, so accounting'll want to tabulate. Another time," he promises with a nod to seal the deal.

As he's gathering foodstuffs, he glances to Clint. "Things've been quiet at the mansion so far, which is sure to change any day now. Holidays don't mean much to anyone wanting to cause a scuffle. I'll be sure to appraise you if anything crops up on the radar."

A quick glance at his phone from his pocket and the Captain winces. "Traffic must've been bad on the way in. Gotta double-time, folks, sorry to say it. I'll see you both soon enough." With that, he's quick to finish out the pile on his tray and rush it to the register. Food bagged and gathered, there he goes, lifting a hand in final departure at Clint and Vi. Maybe he can be quick enough that it'll all still be warm by the time he gets back to his desk!

Vi has posed:
The brunette girl accepts the money back, looking at it for a moment before putting it away in her pocket. "Then I will have pay for it another time," she announces to the men, smiling to them both.

Vi does indeed order the hot pastrami. After that she's not quite sure. "A pickle. And the bag of potato chips," she says, recognizing those easily enough. When she's asked for her drink order, she asks what they have. The man points to the machine, Vi looking at the labels on all of the different flavors. "Could you just read them to me?" she asks a little sheepishly after her lips move trying to sound a few out.

The man scowls a bit, in typical New Yorker fashion, but does so. She stops him when he gets to lemonade, which goes on her ticket. Vi moves to the side then, waiting for Clint and letting him pick a table for them. The Giants forced a punt and are nearing the end zone, so the mood in the room is turning more positive.

Hawkeye (Barton) has posed:
"Sounds fair," Clint says of the paying arragements and bidding Steve farewell before he gets his food. He gets a couple of their hotdogs, some chips, and a diet coke.

"Take it easy pal," Clint says about the reading. "Just read the girl the drinks," he warns about that scowl giving Vi a shrug. "It's New York, bickering and snark is city's hobby."

He flashes her a grin then and when they have their food he peers around for the 'I'll have what she's having table' but with things being this crowded it is taken and there's likely three or four other tables eyeing the chance to switch to it, but he does find them a table by the window giving them a view of the street as they eat.

Catching the action on the TV Clint can't help but rib the Giants fans a little, "Hey isn't there a Packers game on right now?" he calls out chuckling to himself as he and his team of choice are booed.

"Anyhow, welcome to New York, it doesn't get much more New York than around here."

Vi has posed:
Vi follows close behind Clint with her tray of food. "I'm starting to realize what it is like, yes," she comments to him as they reach the table he's picked out and she takes a seat on one side. "Someone said going to the mall on Friday was part of Thanksgiving. So we went. But people were behaving like a food shipment had just arrived after no rations for a week. Maybe worse," she says, shaking her head.

"I found a quite corner. Two men fought over a toy animal. I thought they were going to tear it apart tugging on it, but then one paid the other to let him have it," she says.

Vi leans down to smell her sandwich. "Oh, that smells so good!" she says of it. She gets a napkin and carefully unfolds it, then sets it in her lap. After she glances over at Clint's napkin, as if to watch what he does with it to see if she got it right. The socialization simulations originally made for X-23 are apparently getting more use.

Hawkeye (Barton) has posed:
Pulling a face at the idea of Vi going out on Black Firday, he says, "Yeeeah, that's Black Friday, when all the stores put on sales that are /supposed/ to be way cheaper than normal, people sort of go nuts about it, like the ration thing, same general motivation, the sense if they don't act now they'll miss out on something they want. Just Black Friday is a lot more stupid.

He 'hehs' about the bear. "Yeah, that happens too. We're coming up on Christmas and a lot of people get really wrapped up in finding the perfect gift for people. Which is nice on paper, but in reality it's mostly about getting the rarest and most expensive thing."

Clint is about to tuck into a hotdog before he notices the look at his napkin. "Oh right," he says putting down the hotdog and unfolding the napkin on his lap.
