Cast of Characters: Firefly (Barrows), Nightingale, Rift

Firefly (Barrows) has posed:
Josiah had come from outside of new york to this new place in westchester. He was now in the kitchen, cooking up a storm. A large pot boiling away happily as something from the sea is smelled. He stirs a pot and an apron which showed a nerd with the words best shrimp on it. He hmms as he tries something on a spoon. The smell of spices and seafood fills the air.

Nightingale has posed:
The past few days had, mercifully, been relatively quiet. While Shannon was a bit anxious to speak to the Professor about a rather unusual matter, it seemed it was not to happen this evening. One thing often cured all ills of the spirit, even if it wasn't healthy for the waistline--mac 'n cheese. So, in her favorite red tartan sweatpants, baggy gray tank top, and floofy sheepdog slippers--her favorite PJ's--she makes her way to the kitchen, tying back her hair for safety.

However, even before she got there, the savory aromas wafting through the hall told her one irrefutable fact. She was not alone. So she pokes her head through the door, her nose twitching as she takes in the increidble, heavenly aromas. "Whatever that is, it smells heavenly!"

Firefly (Barrows) has posed:
"Just in time Chere." He says with a smirk as he begins to serve up bowls. He pulls down a couple bowls and he scoops the rice and seafood and sausage dish into a bowl. In it were shrimp tails and pieces of smoked sausage mixed in a slightly spicy sauce with rice. Definatly cajun cooking, the spice was subtle, at first it didnt appear until the food was swallowed.

Rift has posed:
A red flare of light as a portal tears open, and the ever-ravenous Rift emerges, with her usual eerie glow that probably doesn't even bother anyone in this school. "I heard about some kind of seafood feat?" she asks, staring around, then her eyes lock onto everything. "So..." She sniffs. "Smells Cajun. Is this a potluck? I could whip something up if needed?"

Nightingale has posed:
Wriggling her nose, Shannon takes in the heavenly aromas, and lets out a little sigh. "Jambalaya. Good god, how'd you manage to get andouille sausage this far north?" She can't resist taking a good, healthy bite, her wings ruffling and spreading open a bit in a show of delight. "Haven't had anything like this since the time I went with my family to N'awlins."

Rift's appearance gets a wiggle of one wing in lieu of a wave, the resident winged healer smiling over at her. "Hey there! Aww heck, if we're going potluck, I should make my mac 'n cheese instead of just sitting here stuffing my face!"

Firefly (Barrows) has posed:
"I do hope it's cajun, Chere." He says with a smirk. He then looks to Shannon and grins. "The church has a warehouse of food back in N'awlins, We donate it to those who need it in our church." Josiah says. Another pot was full of some sort of crawfish boil, little shellfish all bright red and mixed with seasonings. "Ma and pa like to cook...ma likes creole, and my pa is more cajun." He says with a grin.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon purses her lips, thinking for a moment. "I always mix the two up. Creole is the real spicy stuff, and Cajun is more subtle spices, right? That's something I ought to ask Gwen, she'd know. Or Remy. He'd know." She's kept silent for a moment indulging in the jambalaya, not really caring if it was Creole or Cajun, so long as it was good food! "You sure your superpower isn't good cooking?"

Rift has posed:
Rift nods as she gets a big bowl and heaps it up, then settles down to eat next to Shannon. "Well - I should cook more myself - but so busy lately. Cooking's kinda second fiddle." She is devouring her huge serving at an absurd rate.

Firefly (Barrows) has posed:
"Chere, Creole is fancy cooking. Cajun is more poor man's cooking. To be honest though, the real difference between the two other then price tag is One uses red pepper and the other uses black pepper." He says with a chuckle. "Well I figure if a woman likes me, it is because I am a good man and can cook decently. If she can handle my constant religious intercourses, then I am blessed."

Nightingale has posed:
And then it hit her. Shannon seemed to realize just who she was talking with, setting her spoon down in her bowl. "Josiah... when did you get here?" Delayed reaction much, anyone?

Rift has posed:
Rift smiles. "Oh - I'd love a man who could cook," she muses softly. "BUt I haven't really found anyone for a romantic interest yet." She then blinks at Josiah. "Have we met, by the way? I'm kinda bad with faces but you don't seem at all familiar... maybe I'm just being inattentive."

Firefly (Barrows) has posed:
"Eh a little while ago. Miss Pryde welcomed me. This place is interesting." Josiah says as he coughs and reigns in his cajun accent a little better. "I am actually new here. My name is Josiah. I am a mutant who can use some sort of lightbased abilities." He tries to explain to Rift and smiles. "I also preach in my spare time back at my folk's mobile church." He says with a grin

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods, and smiles somewhat. "He's rather good, too. I was in a bit of a bad way after a routine training patrol went south. Cannonball brought me there to finish healing up after I'd been in the medbay a few days. Two busted wings, some broken ribs, and a nasty egg on the back of my head." She purses her lips a little bit in concern. "he'd managed a tent full of healing and still fixed me up. But I wonder if it was too much, he looked pretty peaked after..."

Firefly (Barrows) has posed:
"My folks managed to determine that the light I generate actually heals folks. We even had a schizophrenic say that she could think clearly when bathed in my light." He says as he watches Shannon. "Anyway the ability seems to be linked to my own lifeforce...if I am weak, so is the light." He says to Rift and he checks on his crawfish and strains the crawfish and offers some.

Rift has posed:
Rift nds. "I have gravity powers," she muses softly. And without any further warning, she and her bowl of food invert upside down and she moves to sit on the ceiling, continuing to eat. Somehow gravity seems to be ignoring the upside-down bowl and she continues to eat normally. "But a healer is always a neat ability. I don't have light powers - though for some reason I have this weird glow when I'm 'powered up'."

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon shrugs, ruffling her wings a little bit as she nibbles on her bowl of jambalaya. "I heal but it's a bit different. Your ability sounds closer to Chris'." She pauses, munching away for the moment, enjoying the food--but there are some shadows in her eyes. "We were going to see if our gifts were close enough to where maybe I could learn to heal more like that, instead of simply absorbing others' injuries. There were enough similarities but never really got to put the idea to the test. Heck, I might even talk to the Professor about it sometime."

Firefly (Barrows) has posed:
"The professor?" Josiah asks as he watches them. He gets some crawfish and begins to suck on the heads of the bugs, nodding to them. "Well I am here to get an education. I barely was able to pass the junior high education packet. I am hoping to get a highschool education here as well as use my abilities better." He says as he holds out a hand. A bright light shines and becomes solid in his hand, forming into the shape of a fork and he begins to eat a bowl of jambalaya. "Does everyone here have abilities?"

Rift has posed:
Rift shrugs. "It's a school for mutants. So - yes." She opens a portal 'beneath' (above) her and 'falls' back to where she was on the floor as she shrugs, finishing her meal as her orientation changes. "Most of us have a hard time assimilaitng into society due to our appearances. If I control msyelf and don't use my powers I can pass mostly - with sunglasses or colored contacts. I only glow when messing with gravity."

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon cracks a bit of a smile, spreading her wings out to their full, fairly considerable span. "Bit hard to hide these," she remarks, laughing a little bit. "Truth be told, don't think I'd ever want to. They're part of who I am." Glancing back at Josiah, she nods, and smiles. "Mmhmm. Professor Xavier. The one who founded this place. Finally got to meet him a week or so ago. He's nice as anything, think you'd like him."

Firefly (Barrows) has posed:
Josiah nods. "I am afraid I am far too religious for my own good." He says with a sigh as he looks back to Rift. "So is there anyone I should avoid here? I have made enemies in the south by preaching and not helping everyone with my gift." He says softly.

Rift has posed:
Rift nods. "Well... we're very open-minded for... we're all different in our own ways," she muses, grinning as she went for seconds. "Thsi was very delicious. Haven't had a good meal in a while." She giggles.

Nightingale has posed:
"Oi! Says she who devours a whole pan of my mac 'n cheese and then asks where's the main course!" Chuckling lightly, Shannon nudges the other girl good-naturedly. "I'd ask if you have a black hole somewhere in your belly except in your case that could possibly be true!"

Firefly (Barrows) has posed:
Josiah offers a plateful of crawdads. "Here's the main course. Just suck on the heads." He says calmly as he begins to suck on some of the red shellfish. He eats a few of them and he looks to Shannon. "So Where you both from? Clear where I was from." He says with a grin.

Rift has posed:
Rift shrugs. "Well - I've often thought that. I once got thrown out of an all-you-can-eat buffet." She giggles as she looks at the two of you. "I met the professor once - after I got shot protecting Mutant Town. Don't worry - it was just my arm. I... well.... I'm a bit fragile. If I get hurt - I can't use my powers."

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon grimaces, thinking of violence in Mutant Town. "There was a mutant rights protest there not long after I arrived. Sentinels were there as well." Sighing softly, she picks up a crawfish and tries to work up the nerve to draw out the flesh from its shell. But those beady little eyes...

"A kid my age named Daniel got shot in the back by one of the Sentinels. He was beyond saving." It seems clear this will affect her for a lifetime.

Glancing back over at Josiah, she smiles a bit. "I was originally from Connecticut, a little town called Waterford. Not a real mutant friendly area, though, I won't be going back there to live anytime soon."

Firefly (Barrows) has posed:
Josiah chuckles. "My folks think mutants were god's chosen." He says as he watches them. "With my gifts it is easy to see why." He says as he watches the two of them. He then puts a hand on Shannon's shoulder. "he is in a better place. A place without pain." He says softly.

Rift has posed:
Rift just stares at Josiah. "I should let you know - you are extraordinarly lucky." She shakes her head. "A vast majority of those here were rejected by their parents. They have nowhere else to go." She was simply cracking the shells of the crawdads with high gravity and eating them. "When my powers first kindled... I kinda-sorta tore the house apart... and... must've got knocked out by a falling beam. Next I knew, I was in a hospital room with Professor Xavier telling me that I lived with him now. I have no idea where my parents are."

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon rests her hand briefly on Josiah's, her wings drooping, and a single feather floating to the ground. "I know. But you never forget these things." She doesn't go into further detail about the incident, simply listening to the others talk about their family situations. "Mine still love and support me. But they know they can't help me, so they went looking for help and wound up here. Mr. McCoy and Miss Munroe were there to welcome me here just a couple days before my birthday, in July. I didn't get to meet the Professor till just about a week or so ago."

Firefly (Barrows) has posed:
"I havent met the professor. I met you and Mr. Guthrie." He says as he gestures to shannon. He then looks to rift. "So how is my cooking?" He asks curiously between the two girls.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon smiles over at Josiah and raises her spoon in salute to the young man. "Pretty darn good. Maybe sometime I could learn how to make this. Or better yet, you and Remy could get into a cook-off. Then we'd all win!"

Rift has posed:
Rift states, "Delicious. I love it...." she states. She then sighs. "I should get going. It was lovely getting to know you, Josiah." She stands up, bows, then a portal opens under her and she falls through it without any warning.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon smiles a little at Josiah and digs into her bowl of jambalaya. "Maybe next time, I'll cook. What do you think, mac 'n cheese, or lasagna? Though I doubt anything could top all this..." Good food, good company, could one ask for anything better?
