Coffee and Scones, Anyone
Date of Scene: 04 May 2020
Location: Kitchen - Xavier's School
Synopsis: Kitty drops by the kitchen for scones. Om nom nom ensues.
Cast of Characters: Nightingale, Shadowcat

Nightingale has posed:
With classes out, for the most part, most students are starting to go into their 'summer break mode'. Some are outside enjoying a warm spring day, others are taking advantage of the lack of classes to sleep in. Shannon, on the other hand, is in the kitchen, with a pot of coffee brewing, a dusting of flour lingering on her face, and washing up a mixing bowl. The sweet smell of something with blueberries in it baking mingles with the dark, rich aroma of the coffee for an absolutely heavenly smell. She's wearing black leggings, a long, black, scoop-neck tunic shirt with glittering black beadwork fringe on the hem and 3/4 sleeves, and a plain pair of black flats.

Did the girl never take a rest?

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty's not got much to do, so she's...okay, no. She was going to relax and take vacation time. That was, until she smelled what Shannon was doing in the kitchen. Great. That girl has a way of making things that are, well, irresistable/ See. Kitty slips in and just watches for a moment. She's actually wanting to help out now. Blueberries. Coffee. Okay. This is not fair!

"Shannon?" Kitty asks. "What's got you inn a hot kitchen and slaving away over delicious food?" she asks taking a few steps toward the coffee, winged one and the bowl. "More to the point. What're you making? I'm also hoping you're planning to share whatever it is you're baking and making, young lady" Kitty says with a grin. There's no scolding in her tone or eyes. Nah. Kitty's just pleased Shannon's helping out.

Given she's in her summer clothes, blouse, shorts, flip flops, Kitty's dressed for the weather and is enjoying it, as she's checking the windows are open to enjoy the summer air.

Nightingale has posed:
Setting the mixing bowl upside-down in the strainer to dry, Shannon turns around and grins at Kitty. "Hey, you! Didn't know who'd be around this morning so I figured, get a pot of coffee going, and make a batch of blueberry scones in case someone was a little peckish." The kitchen itself wasn't very hot. In fact, the windows are open to let in a nice, gentle breeze. "Scones ought to be out of the oven in a few minutes. Pull up a stool and I'll get you some coffee. How do you take it?"

As the winged girl is bustling about, fussing over Kitty by getting her a cup and pouring out some coffee, she's peering towards the doorway. "Not going to wind up with a backfiring hat today, am I?" She chuckles softly, shaking her head a bit.

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty pretty much sprints to the stool. "Nah Lockheed's outside chasing small flying things. Or was when I walked in here, pretty sure he..." she says looking out the window. "There he is, enjoying himself. But, I got cofffee and kosher scones" Kitty jokes "Blueberry scones do sound great actually. So go on, who put you up to this?" Kitty smiles, settling on the stool.

Yes.Kitty's that not surprised that she thinks Shannon got asked to make scones. That's just hwow her mind works. Though really, Kitty knows deep down, Shannnon doesn't need a reason to bake or cook. She just does it anyway.

Nightingale has posed:
Shaking her head, Shannon just smiles. "I just wanted to try making them. Never made scones before. And I love blueberries." Sure enough, just as she's getting some milk, a sugar bowl, and a spoon for Kitty to use on her coffee as she sees fit, the oven timer goes off, Dials are turned, the oven shut off, the door opened--and a tray of piping hot, sweet, berry-studded goodness deposited on a cooling rack on the counter. By some miracle, not a single one was burnt.

"Kind of curious about something," the healer in training begins. "Just how many students tend to stay on here after graduation, and wind up as staff themselves?"

Shadowcat has posed:
"You know what they say about curiosity" Kitty nods with a wry grin. Shaking her head Kitty eyes the scones while adding milk, sugar et al to her coffee.

That question's a good one. "I don't have the numbers to hand. I'd say ask our headmistress in case I got the wrong numbers, but it's more than you think" Kitty nods. She's not going into specifics, really. Nah, Kitty's just speaking in general terms.

Nightingale has posed:
That just earns a grin from Shannon, and she chuckles softly. There's the soft clink of a plate being retrieved from one of the cabinets, and the teen's soon plucking the scones from the cooling rack, depositing the pile of puffy, pillowy sweets in front of a likely very hungry Kitty. She does, however, save one for herself, as well as some coffee. "I'm guessing it's a pretty fair bet that at least a good number of the teachers were students here themselves. Probably starting with miss Grey and Mr. Summers among them. Then there's you. Heck, you're not that much older than I am, so it probably wasn't all that long ago you became a guidance counselor here."

With the scrape of wood on tile, she pulls a stool over and perches on it to enjoy the fruits of her labor, munching happily away on the scone and enjoying some coffee to chase it down. Her voice is a bit lower as she continues, less likely to carry to the doorway. "I've also seen a pretty fair number of teachers in action out in the field, so there's a good sense of who's who there, too. And it's a life I can see continuing on with, to keep the dream of this place alive."

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty laughs, "I'm only 21. Yes, a 21 year old guidance counselor, work that one out" she muses with a grin, biting into a scone. Okay. These are good. Mmm.

"You're not wrong" Kitty nods swallowing. "Yeah students here follow Professor Xavier's dream, really. It's noble, though you can get more information by seeing the world, too" Kitty nods sipping her coffeee. "What're you thinking for after school then?"

Nightingale has posed:
"Why do you think I go out in the field so much? I don't go looking for trouble, I just go out to go out, and see what's out there. Trouble finds me all on its own." Nibbling on her scone, Shannon seems to mull things over for a moment. "Well, I know I don't want to give up on medical, but I like the idea of teaching here, too. It'll be a lot of work, but heck, if someone like the Professor can go after all his degrees, or someone like Doctor Banner can earn the ones he's got, there's no reason I should have to give up on either idea."

The young woman's tone takes on a note of sadness for just a moment. "I can't really go back home again. Yes, my family loves and supports me, but they're in a highly mutant-unfriendly area. They brought me here just hoping to talk to Dr. McCoy, and see if he knew of a safe haven for mutants. They had no idea that this /was/ the place." She pauses for a bit of coffee, gazing out through the window over the rim of her cup. "Coming here was a rare opportunity, and it's one I want to pay forward. There's miss Munroe's and Dr. McCoy's example. Miss Grey's, and Mr. Summers', too. Of course, the Professor, and Herr Wagner, Logan... and far from the least of all, there's you, too. I want to stay and be here for students who come after me, the same way all of you have done for me."

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty listens and nods. "See, your heart's in the right place. We're all a big family here" she smiles. "Though I do worry about you guys heading out though, it always seems to lead into trouble" she shrugs and looks thoughtful. "You'd want to graduate, get your teaching certificate and then teach huh? You're only a sophomore, but if you're serious on that, that's absolutely great" Kitty nods with a grin and looks over the rim of her coffee cup.

"I mean, you'd be able to hand out papers really quickly and flying dropkick troublemakers off school grounds. You're expelled, get outta here, yeah let's get Shannon to do the honors" Kitty giggles.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon bursts out laughing, and shakes her head. "Naah. Besides, not really a sophomore anymore, am I? The school year's just about done and I've got the grades to continue on to my junior year." Another scone is plucked from the plate to join its compatriot in the winged girl's belly. "Well, there's the teaching certificate, but I don't want to forget about medical, either. And as for going out there... don't you think us students worry about all of you X-men when /you/ go out, too? You said it yourself, we're a family here."

Shadowcat has posed:
Job....somewhat done, Kitty sits back satisfied. Looking over to the scones Kitty snags another one and chews on it. "Nah you're a junior when the new school year rolls around. Look at you, honor roll huh?" Kitty teases with a smirk. "I got an idea out of left field. Why not get certified like Warren and teach first aid classes, or medical ones? That way you get too roll both passions into one" Kitty suggests with a smile. "Doctor Lance is a bit of a ways off yet. Actually, Shannon Lance, MD. That just sounds like one of those TV shows you setle into the rec room with a slice of pizza, some popcorn and half the students and faculty to watch" she grins, chowing dowwn on her scone too with a grin. "I mean, it just does" she admits through giggles.

Nightingale has posed:
"There's also the matter of a flight instructor, too," Shannon points out. "Warren's awesome, but he has his own business interests to look after and can't always be here. Who's covering for him in the meantime?" She purses her lips and glances out to the front yard. "I've got to admit, I'm liking helping Megan out learning to work with her new wings, since they're that much closer to mine now. And when I was able to help Gwendolyn fly for the first time... well, I couldn't have been prouder of her. Now look at her zipping around without a care in the world!"

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty grins, "I've no idea, but I'm proud of Gwen and worried about Megan in the same breath. It's like she's gone all goth and dark and brooding and such, ya know? I just wish we could help her out. I need to sit down with her at some point and sort this out" Kitty shrugs, shaking her head. "I just need to make time for that. But for a flight instructor, you got any suggestions?" Kitty muses with a grin.

"Oh yeah I know you're worried about us but we can usually handle ourselves fairly well" Kity offers. "It's when we don't that everyone gets scared and for good reason"

Nightingale has posed:
"Yeah, that's usually when y'all wind up calling /me/ in." She pins Kitty with a very pointed look, and shivers a bit. "Working with Triage to pull you out of a coma... now that was one hell of a healing." All is quiet for a moment, a more companionable silence than anything else. "You told me once that it's all this talk, all this hashing things out in between incidents, that makes an X-man. That it's as much what happens right here that defines us, as much as what happens out there. You were right, you know."

Glancing at Kitty, she smiles somewhat. "I still get that 'battle calm' when the shit hits the fan. But it doesn't numb me. It just lets me work through whatever's happening in the moment. The rest just comes out later, and that's okay. Got you and Bean to thank for thumping me about that." She smiles to Kitty, her expression softening. "Yeah, when you guys have a rough time handling things, it's good reason for the rest of us to be alert. But I don't let it scare me. Thing is, we all have each other for things like that. Doesn't matter if we're on the A-team or the B-team around here. As for a flight instructor?" She grins a bit, and raises her hand. "I'm no expert, but heck, if I can help out, I'd be happy to pitch in."

From a warm smile, her expression shifts to a more concerned one, with her brows furrowed and her lips pursed. "You have no idea how tempted I am to haul my buns up to go pay a visit to Dr. Strange and get his input on what's happening with Megan. He agreed the loss of her soul dagger was what triggered the change, but as for getting that back? Not a clue. That's more his forte. And..." She sighs softly, setting her coffee cup down for a moment. "Don't ask me how I know this, but Megan may be heading for further trouble. Thing is, I don't have a lot of information to go on, so I don't know how much or who to tell at this point. There's no sense anybody going off half-cocked, because that won't help her one damn bit."

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty laughs, "You're gonna march into what do they call his place and keep banging on the door? Shannon" Kitty says though she turns serious. "You and me both. I don't like where this is going for Megan, but what can I do?I can't take my concerns to our headmistress can I?" Kitty muses. "I need to reach out and see what we can do. After all, you were right on a certain water god. But..." Kitty says, looking a little worried. Okay, no, a lot worried actually. "I've a mind to go over there and join in banging on the door. Do we need to stock up on thin mint cookies?" Kitty asks looking worried.

Kitty shakes her head sipping her coffee and munching another scone. "See, I'm not liking the sound of that Megan being in trouble. I'm half wanting to go leaping out there and bring her back here, you know?" she asks with a quiet sigh.

Nightingale has posed:
"That... would not be good," Shannon agrees. Sighing softly, she rubs her temples. "But there's no two ways about it. If we even /think/ Megan could be in trouble, we'll have to bring miss Grey and Mr. Summers into it. One, it's their job to keep an eye on things and two, it'd be pretty darn stupid to go off on this half-cocked.." Her frown turns into a distinct grimace of distaste, her nose wrinkling. "Thing is, though, is that it's part of the gremlin attacks that have been happening, and well... to be honest, this part of it is going to sound effing crazy."

Shadowcat has posed:
"Right" Kitty agrees, "So they need to be brought into it. Okay, so" Kitty says with a look into her coffee. "That bit's not in question. Though what's going to sound crazy though? And gremlins?" she ponders, stirring her coffee.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods. "Gremlins. And... yeah. Fairies." She grimaces even more, swirling what remains of her coffee around in her cup. "One of which has been hiding out with me. Or, rather, /in/ me." She pauses a moment to let that sink in. "And yes, that's going into the report Megan and I are sending on up the food chain."

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty stays quiet processing this with a sigh. "Okay, so" she says quietly. "Okay so, hold on. You have a fairy inside you? Did you spike my coffee or anything or am I understanding you right?" she asks with a smile. "Okay. You need to, hmm..." she says sipping her coffee more. "You need to not leave anything out of your report" Kitty advisess, looking relieved. "You'll get through this, you got a fairy, so what? You'l get through this and learn from it" Kitty smiles

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods slowly. "Poor thing was scared out of her mind. She was drawn to my music and decided to hunker down in my head for a while. Yeah I know, it sounds nuts. And I've been trying to encourage her to approach some of you guys on her own. But it looks like I'll have to be the one to speak up." She rolls her eyes and smiles a bit. "It's gonna be awkward as heck, and I'm anticipating a 'why didn't you say something sooner' from one of them. But I'll cross that bridge when I get to it."

Getting up, she puts her coffee cup in the sink with a bit of soapy water inside, and starts bustling about the kitchen anew, gathering together what looks like the ingredients for a carb and cheese overload times three. Oh yes. A triple batch of mac 'n cheese! "Meantime, I've got to get cooking. There's... well, a BBQ that's happening down in Metropolis, miss Lane is putting it on for the folks who helped rescue Superman."

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty nods and smiles, setting her own now empty coffee cup in the sink. "I won't keep you from cooking then. If you need anything you know where I'll be and how to get a hold of me" Kitty nods and nods, heading for the door. "Okay so" Kitty calls over, "I'll be in my office if you need anything, just knock, or flying dropkick the door if it's urgent. Though you may have to heal me if you try that" Kitty laughs, opening the door.
