Snack a'Chat
Date of Scene: 21 July 2020
Location: Dining Hall - Xavier's School
Synopsis: Some of the old guard chat around the late evening dinner table and are joined by a couple of student.
Cast of Characters: Phoenix, Cyclops, Wolverine, Colossus, Ted Gammage, Nightingale

Phoenix has posed:
The proper dinner hours ended awhile ago, so anyone now is left to fend for themselves. Normally Jean never eats till late anyway, so scrounging and then enjoying the relative quiet of the hall is no problem for her. She's sitting near one of the windows with a plate of leftover chicken parm and garlic bread from the evening's meal. She's got her phone out and is scrolling through the news while absently twirling the same few noodles around her fork for the fourth time.

Cyclops has posed:
Heading into the dining room with a bowl of cereal and a glass of orange juice is Scott. It's breakfast for dinner for him tonight. As he settles in next to her, he dips his spoon into the bowl and takes a large bite of Frosted Flakes. He leans in against her shoulder, then peeks over it to the phone with a bit of a grin. "Whatcha looking at?" He asks as he gives her knee a light tap beneath the table. "How are you doing? All the kids settling in okay?"

Phoenix has posed:
Jean Grey leans into Scott's shoulder as he leans into her, murmuring, "I'm alright, just skimming the news for anything important. I peek through it and social media a few times a day in case if anything we'd be interested in crops up."

She taps off the screen and sets down her phone. "Everything here is quiet tonight. Adam seems to be doing alright, though he's got some concerns to work through. I'm not worried, though. Tough pasts and teenagers are always a rough combo, but I have confidence he'll work through things in time and with steady support. I haven't had a chance to talk with Kitty yet, but I will be."

Wolverine has posed:
Quietly, Logan has wandered the mansion. Lots of kids are out, making it nice and quiet. As he meanders past the dining halls entrance, he stops for a moment spying Jean and Scott. Taking a few steps to back up he finds himself a spot and leans on the door sill. He says nothing as he listens to the duo. Okay, so he's been MIA for a week. That's his thing. Old debts need to be paid. Especially when an old acquaintance in Mandripoor needs some help from his pal Patch.

Cyclops has posed:
"Mm. Yeah. That whole thing is interesting. Probably one of those things that sounded good in her head, but came out all wrong. It just seems out of character for her." Scott says as he presses his lips together in a thin line. He takes another bite of his cereal. "Adam seems like a good kid. Glad he is looking after his younger brother as well."

"So is Ted. We got a few good kids who have came to the school. I'm already putting them down for potential New Mutants to partner with Shannon and Jeremy. We /have/ told him that, right?" He says with a furrow of his brow.

Phoenix has posed:
"/I/ haven't told him anything." Jean responds to Scott with a squint. "Didn't know that was the plan, but I leave the team stuff to you and Sam. I did have to scold him for snooping in student records researching new faces." She adds with a soft sigh. "Sam's going to have his work cut out there. We may need to see about who can help him out."

She turns her head away from Scott then and towards the door, looking to Logan then with a lopsided smile. "Speaking of trouble, welcome home. Everything alright?"

Wolverine has posed:
"Same ol, same ol." the short Canadian answers as he watches them. "From the sounds of it, looks like you two getting ready for new students? " he asks as he pulls a cigar for the inner pocket of his denim jacket. He goes through the motions of prepping the stogie, but doesn't light it right away. "Anyone I gotta worry about?"

Cyclops has posed:
"New kids are already here. Got a couple of them. One can turn into a bear. One is super strong and invulnerable. The other is a cyberpath. They all bring something new to the table that we haven't had in awhile. DR sessions should be fun." Scott says to Logan as he furrows his brows a bit.

Glancing to Jean, he gives her a bit of a sheepish grin. "I was actually thinking perhaps tapping Hank to work with Sam. I think that they can benefit from having some intelligence incorporated into the sessions and Sam could use some mentorship as well."

He dips his spoon into the cereal again for a bite.

Phoenix has posed:
"Jeremy already talked with the Danger Room." Jean says with a low chuckle. "Tried to hack his way out of the simulation I ran, but she outsmarted him and locked him out. Hank may be a good choice, yeah. This way the kids get the rounded brains and brawn experience, not that either Sam or Hank aren't capable of both."

She takes a moment to shove a mouthful of reheated chicken parm in her mouth, talking around the bite towards Logan. "You might actually be a good person to chat to Adam, if you're up to him. He's got a quick temper and having an angry bear in the halls isn't ideal. Maybe you can help him with some methods to keep his anger in check. He's had a rough time too, which doesn't help."

Wolverine has posed:
With a raised brow Logan gazes at Jean. "Who says I have my anger in check?" he starts as a smirk cracks across his lips. Then with a shrug, he reaches into the front pocket of the jacket and retrieves a Zippo. "But I'll see what I can do." he adds as he flicks the flint and creates a flame. "A kid who can turn into a bear." he mutters as he gets ready to light his cigar.

Colossus has posed:
For a man his size, Piotr is quiet. One of the men in the room saw to that long ago, when he was younger, smaller, and a bit more biddable. That was years ago, but while it might take a little longer for Piotr to learn, once learned it remains. He is not sneaking, but he doesn't sound like a herd of elephants outside. His bulk fills the door frame and a sturdy shoulder settles in the door jam as massive arms cross in front of his chest.

"Jeremy likes Hank. Hank is an excellent decision. Jeremy respects him. Boy shifts from no confidence to borderline arrogance. Someone patient I think." Unlike Piotr to just volunteer things, but to his estimation he has skin in his game. Too casually he lifts his left hand up to take a drink from the glass that his hand is wrapped about. Vodka and water, and a lot more vodka than water. The big man takes three swallows, removing most of the beverage. As he wipes his mouth off on the back of that hand, he quietly offers, "I can leave if this is private conversation."

Cyclops has posed:
"Yeah, well, we had a few that could turn into wolves. A bear isn't out of the equation." Scott says as he finishes his cereal. Picking the bowl up, he heads over to place it in the sink in the kitchen, then returns after a few moments to see that Piotr has made his way in.

"Hey, Pete." He says, reaching out to clasp him on the shoulder. "It's not a private conversation. We were just enjoying some time together and talking about the new kids." As he settles once more next to Jean, he takes his phone out and taps along the glass to answer an email, then tucks it away.

Phoenix has posed:
"In check enough that you don't storm out when I remind you not to smoke inside?" Jean teases the Canadian as she eyes his lighter. "Besides, at least if he does lose focus you can take the backlash. I'm sure he wouldn't be the first bear that you've wrestled in your time."

And then there's an equally familiar - if taller man - appearing in the door who has also probably wrestled a bear. "Piotr, not at all. Come on in and join us." She asks as she nudges her plate to one side, though it doesn't look like she's eaten much of it at all. "Rogue tree limbs all wrangled?"

Ted Gammage has posed:
Perhaps his ears are burning at the mention a few moments ago, or maybe he's just a big dude that has to eat more than normal, Ted enters the dining room from the kitchen. He's apparently made a simple sandwich and has found the biggest bag of chips he could find for his evening snack. A book is tucked under one arm, looks to be a second hand copy of 'The Fellowship of the Ring' for anyone that gets too particularly curious. He pauses seeing a gathering of people, eyes a bit wide with surprised as if he's the cat that ate the canary. He closes his jaws lightly and there's a distinct crunch of a mouthfull of chips. He's clearly not use to living with more than a couple people. "Mmph Hay," he tries to greet, almost timidly.

Wolverine has posed:
Logan is about to light his cigar and hesitates as Jean speaks up. It's only when Pete walks in does Logan lower his lighter. As he now watches the big fella he gives the air a sniff and speaks to the Russian with a look. "Nemnogo rano dlya etogo ne tak li?" (Translation: A bit early for that isn't it?)

Colossus has posed:
"I was up early." Piotr replies to Logan, not even batting an eye. "And I will be in bed soon. I have a project." That said, Piotr puts the glass on the table within arm's reach of Logan and walks over to grab Jean's plate. He gives her a little look. "You are too skinny." He chides her gently. Still, he moves to dispose of Jean's plate, closing his mouth to take it to the kitchen.
Dishes rattle in the kitchen as Piotr makes with clean up real quick.

Cyclops has posed:
"Hey, Ted." Scott says as he gives a lift of his hand towards the large kid. "Jean, Logan, Pete. This is Ted Gammage. One of the new students who is now attending Xavier's. He's from Lousiana. He's the one I mentioned earlier. The strong one." He motoins for him to take a seat if he wishes. "Come join us. Jean is the Head Mistress of the school, and Logan and Peter here are professors."

"I hope you are settling in okay. Is there anything that we can get you? You're finding yourself around alright?"

Phoenix has posed:
"I'm fine, babushka." Jean says up towards Piotr, though there's nothing but affection and poor accent in her voice despite the teasing choice of words.

She leans back in her chair then and gives a dip of her head towards Ted. "Welcome to the school. Sorry I haven't swung by to meet you personally, but my office and email are always open if you ever need to get in touch with me. Settling in alright?"

Ted Gammage has posed:
The young mutant kind of angle a bit to dodge Pete, stepping quickly out of the way to let him through, plus he generally tries not to block doors. Ted turns back as Scott introduces him, managing to quickly swallow down the chips and says "Oh, uh, sure, ah s'pose," and sets his plate down on the table, staring at the chair a moment before very, very gently pulling a chair out and having a seat in it.

Ted gives a light nod to each as he's told the names, briefly wondering if its 'cool' to ask what someone's power is and eventually deciding he should probably not. "Oh, it's awlright. M'jus' tryin' to get the lay of the land."

Wolverine has posed:
Logan nods wordlessly as he looks at Ted. He does give Scott a disgruntled look as the fearless leader calls him a teacher. Which is nowhere near the truth. Logan is more like an angry hall monitor.

Colossus has posed:
Jean calling him 'Babushka' elicits a warm, deep full-throated laughter from Piotr, whereas being called 'Professor' elicits a soft scoffing snort of derision from the kitchen. "Professor." Piotr says, his voice drifting off into soft Russian protestations that barely carry. Plate cleared and sprayed off, it goes into the dishwasher. Piotr steps back out to pick up his glass again. He doesn't immediately finish it, instead settling himself back into a door jam, this time the door leading into the kitchen. His heavy shoulder settles against the frame and his left hand lightly gasps the glass, letting the beverage hang low. His right hand strokes at his jaw as Piotr considers something. "Hello, Ted." His voice is low and deep, exactly the sort of voice one would expect from such a large man. The voice is also accented with the intonations and cadence of Russian. "I am the art teacher, Piotr Rasputin. I am known as Colossus in the field."
Piotr's shoulder lifts and then falls in a small gesture of greeting. His smile is more genuine and warmer. "It is very good to meet you. I see your book, please feel free to approach me in the library if you see me there. I enjoy a good book."

Cyclops has posed:
"If you need a tour around the school, I can assign an upperclassman to you, Ted." Scott says as he offers a warm smile to the large Southern boy. "And if you need anything at all, just jot it down in an email and send it over adn we'll make sure you get it. We know you didn't bring much over with you, so if you're missing anything critical, we can manage it. Clothing, new computer, specific foods you are partial to. Don't worry about it."

Easing into his chair and relaxing, he gives a motion towards Logan. "He teaches self-defense, combat and survival. As Pete said, he teaches art. I do not teach, personally, as my duties are more administrative, but I teach a Saturday volunteer autoshop class if you are ever interested in putting together some rust buckets."

Nightingale has posed:
Oooo, boy. What had Shannon just walked into? The winged teen is slipping into the dining hall with a fairly large bowl of mac 'n cheese, and a healthy helping of fried chicken, when she catches sight of Logan's expression. She's dressed in some thigh-length light blue denim shorts, a white t-shirt knotted up beneath her chest to leave her midriff bare for comfort in the warmer weather, and her favorite daisy toe flip-flops. Her hair is long and loose, with the exception of the thin, glacier blue braid on the left side of her face, with its trio of little silver beads on the end.

"Don't let Logan kid you, Ted," she chimes in, smiling at Ted finally. "Whether he'll admit it or not, he's an excellent teacher. The best at what he does--even if it isn't always very nice. As for shop class..." She smiles wryly at Scott here. "That's quite a bit of fun, too, and Mr. Summers is damn good at what he does as well." She slips into a nearby seat, nodding in greeting to Jean and Scott as well. "Mr. Summers... Miss Grey... left a bit of extra fried chicken in a container in the fridge if you like. Think I might have finally almost nailed Sam's recipe for the stuff."

Phoenix has posed:
"He does paperwork for me and refills my coffee." Jean stage whispers over towards Ted with a wink before switching back to a normal tone of voice. "And cars too. Anyway, most of us teachers or occasional instructors were among the first rounds of students to be taught here. Logan we just adopted and sticks around this place for some reason. So if you have questions, feel free to grab any of us. We all have our specialties, but we can fill you in on just about anything here or can point you to someone who can help with a given problem or extra lesson on something."

Speaking of students. "Good evening, Shannon. Perfecting the secret Guthrie family recipe? That's a claim to fame for sure. There's only one woman who can judge that, though." She says with a quiet chuckle. "I'm itching to see Mrs. Guthie and Alexis' Nonna in the kitchen together some day. I've heard the legends, but I need to see it all with my own eyes. Mm, Shannon, have you had a chance to meet Ted, one of our new students?"

Ted Gammage has posed:
There's a brief moment where Ted pictures Piotr in a paint-splattered smock while delicately painting a picture. He gives a half smile, and nods again. "Oh, sure," he says in regard to the statement about the library. "Ah'll have to find it again. Think I ran into it the other day. This place, um, has a lot of rooms."

As Scott offers a tour guide, Ted's immediate reaction is to politely decline as his general nature is to not be a bother if he can help it, but he does end up thinking twice about it. "Yyeeah, ah might need someone to show me 'round. Or ah detailed map." Ted glances to Logan, making a brief mental note that this guy doesn't really want to be bothered, which is only backed up by Scott's comment about him being a combat teacher. "Y'all have a fightin' class?" He asks, a bit concerned. The thought of working on cars perks him up a bit though, "Ah already done a little of that at th' farm. I can jus' about put a tractor back together. And I'm pretty sure dad's work truck is mostly duct tape I put on it."

Colossus has posed:
Piotr gets out of the way of Shannon and her wings. As she walks out he knocks back the last of his glass. Silently, he moves his jaw from one side to the other as he thinks some things over. His right hand remains on his jaw, his index finger rubbing over his top lip a couple of times. His blue eyes are still clear and bright as he ponders over a few things. "Da, Ted. Ask for anything reasonable and it will be provided. Although, expect to be roped into any number of chores, but I will not ask you to do anything I will not do with you." Piotr absently plays with his glass and if he was considering something, he has no resolution. "Though if your farm was like my family's farm, you are likely used to such chores." Piotr's shoulder drops a little and he stifles a yawn. "Many pardons. It is not the company, it is the hours. I am not operating on much sleep."

Wolverine has posed:
As everyone talks Logan just stands in his spot silently. He knows better to say anything. Especially after getting back from one of his solo adventures. Instead, he slips both his lighter and cigar back into his jacket pockets and continues to lurk.

Cyclops has posed:
"Sure. Shannon here can show you around." Scott says as he signs the winged student up easily with a quick, amused smile. "Since you two are already familiar with each other, it makes the most sense. That and she has explored every corner of our school twice by now." He slides his hand into Jean's to give it a quick squeeze, then goes back to tapping away at his phone to try and keep up with his email. So many requests.

"Good evening, Shannon. You don't mind of course, right? You should also loop Adam into the tour if possible. It will help them fit in better." He gives a light tap of his phone against the table, straightening up once more in that stiff backed posture of his at the table.

"And if you like cars, we'll meet this Saturday. I'm putting together a Camaro from the seventies. It's rusted and beat up, which makes it a great project to start from scratch."

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon glances over and smiles at Mr. Rasputin, raising a fried chicken drumstick in something akin to a salute. "Privet, Mr. Rasputin. How come you're not getting much sleep? Are you alright?" Ever the healer, she can't stop herself from asking, even though she's just a student.

Chuckling softly, she waves the same drumstick over at Miss Grey, her pale azure eyes a-twinkle with mirth. "Who do you think gave me the recipe, Miss Grey? I hope she manages a visit sometime soon, it'd be great to see how close this is to the real deal. Oh, and there should be some macarons in your office, too." She pauses, and smiles, nodding. "I went with Mr. Summers on the trip to meet Ted. Hadn't been down to Louisiana for a few years." There is a note of fondness in her voice as she mentions it, perhaps a precious memory from years past.

Logan just gets a smile, and she nods towards him. Yeah, she'd seen him in his grouchy, stoic moods and knew better than to disturb him overmuch. Still, it was difficult not to smile at someone held with a level of respect that's been well-earned over time. "And you can't say you're not a teacher. Heck, that's how you introduced yourself to me last fall, by the lake." Okay, so maybe she couldn't resist just a tiny little nudge there. Just a bit.

Turning to Ted, she smiles as well, nudging her plate of mac 'n cheese and fried chicken roughly in between the two, as if offering to share. "Hey... haven't seen you since we got back here. Place is a labryinth, isn't it? Takes a while to get used to, but if you'd like, I'd be glad to help." Lifting her chin in an up-nod towards Scott, she smiles. "And I wouldn't mind actually getting to help with that car, if that's okay?"

Phoenix has posed:
"Ooh right right, you did. Ignore the question then." Jean says with a groan as she looks to be trying to stifle a yawn herself. "Sounds good, they'll go perfect with coffee. Breakfast of champions."

She rises up out of her chair with a roll of her shoulders and a stretching out of her arms. "I'm with you there, Pete. I think it's about time to turn in. It's been a long Monday and I'm sure I'll be up with the sun again. Next week is inventory, so I need lists on what everyone needs for their classes so I can get supplies on order. Except for Bobby. I told him his due date is Friday, because I'll need all weekend to check over his order to make sure he's not squeezing in something ridiculous as a joke."

Ted Gammage has posed:
At this point, Ted's finishing up the last bit of his sandwich. He smiles politely as he's offered more food, very use to it given his upbringing, but he politely declines it for now. With so many new faces around, he's having a bit of time keeping up with things, and it's getting late.

"Sounds good," Ted says in regards to fixing up the cars. "I can prolly hold it up for you if you need to work under the car too," he says, trying to make a joke despite it being a harder thing to do given his hometown's prejudice against Mutants. He also nods to Shannon, "Ah, yeh, I think th' rooms move around too. It's like that book about the wizard school. Ah tour could prolly help in that regards." He gives a genuine smile to the winged student, "Jus' lemme know when. Fer now, ah may need t'go to bed. If ah can find m'room."

Colossus has posed:
"Ponderous decisions. Disappointment in an old friend, and fearing the inevitable and unfortunate has happened." Piotr's shoulders rise and fall in a slow shrug. "I might have grown up." The humor is there, but like a lot of his humor, it is making light of that which is. "I have a project to put back together in the morning after the paint and lacquer have set." Piotr rumbles from somewhere in his chest as he straightens himself to his full height. He shifts the glass in his hand for a moment. "Good night." He says, perhaps a little abruptly. He pauses. "Ted. My apologies. My mind is someplace else. I do, honestly, look forward to having you here."

Scott and Jean both get a polite nod. Logan gets a more fraternal nod. "Good night."

Piotr adds to Shannon. "More tree branches tomorrow. So be sure you get some sleep."

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods to Ted, and smiles warmly. She scoops her plate up and gets to her feet, nodding towards the door. "Not exactly a guided tour, but the dorms are mostly all on the same floor. I could show you the way back there if you like, point you in the right direction?"

As she sidles towards the door, she glances back at Mr. Rasputin, chuckling. "Da, no problem. And I'll make sure to wear the sunblock this time. Ooof... glad for the healing factor, sunburn doesn't last very long on me!"
