Basic Training
Date of Scene: 21 April 2021
Location: Danger Room - X-Men Base
Synopsis: James and Shannon spent time throwing sharp things.
Cast of Characters: Warpath, Nightingale

Warpath has posed:
The Danger Rom is set in basic training room set. No moving holograms of death. Instead there are various targets throughout and weapons stations at each one at tables. It is meant to train with hand weapons rather than powers or even outright brawling. The first training station has several knives laying on it and a target a little closer than the rest of them.

Jimmy stands at the first station, rolling a knife hilt through his fingers thoughtfully. It wasn't really a big put out there offer, so he doesn't expect too many to join tonight and is content with being alone as well.

Nightingale has posed:
Surprisingly enough, there is at least one taker for the basic training run--and it seems perhaps one of the least likely to do so. Shannon slips into the Danger Room in her gym outfit, black shorts and tank top with yellow edging, black sneakers, and her hair pinned up in a bun. She has a black gym bag slung over one shoulder, the contents rattling around a little bit as she walks. "Hello, shik'isn," she says, with a wry smile. "Looks like you've got quite a run planned."

Warpath has posed:
"Hello shik'isn." he replies softly and finally looks towards her,"I can always count on you to show up and try something different. Too bad nobody else wants to learn things." he comments with a shrug. He glances towards the target and throws the knife at the taget. It flies fast, hits hard, and buries almost halfway up the blade. Good metal.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon's eyebrows raise as she watches the blade slice through the air, hitting its target with a soft -thunk-. She lets out a soft whistle, shaking her head and setting down her bag. "Remind me not to piss you off," she finally says. "That looked pretty straightforward, but you've worked with me some just getting used to blades, enough to know there's more to that throw than it looks like."

Warpath has posed:
He motions her over and sets his feet, indicating her to match his stance,"The trick is learning how to gauge how many rotations the blade as to make to hit the target. There are ways to adjust the throw where it flies straight, but it loses range that way."

He picks up another knife and shows her his throwing motion,"This is not something you will get the first time. I didn't and I was raised into this." he explains,"It's easy to get discouraged and the only way to get better is to fail better next time."

Nightingale has posed:
"Edison failed many times before creating the lightbulb, but he never saw it as failure," Shannon replies, grinning. "He just saw it as finding different ways to -not- make a lightbulb."

With that, she takes a moment to study Warpath's stance, adjusting her own as best she can to match, accounting for her slighter stature. Without picking up a knife at first, she attempts to position her hand and mimic the grip of her fingers around the hilt. Moving in slow motion at first, she attempts to copycat the throwing motion he uses. "Like this?" she finally asks.

Warpath has posed:
"In a nutshell." he agrees and watches her stance. Hands reach up to adjust her arm movement gently,"You're on the right track yes. This just takes patience and a lot of practice. I can still fail to stick one sometimes." Once he's shown her how to throw, he lets her move again.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon just cracks a small smile, and can't help the light laugh that escapes her. "Then I won't feel so bad for failing to stick any, if even you still miss." She moves through the throwing motion a few more times, doing her best to keep it consistent each time. It feels a little odd to her, but so far, overall, it really wasn't too bad. Picking up one of the small blades, she takes aim at the target, goes through the throwing motions a few times as a test, and finally lets the blade fly....

...right past the target, to the tune of much 'conversational' English, and varied other languages.

Warpath has posed:
There is a smirk as he hears the magic words slip from the young lips. A shake of his head and he tells her,"You know, some people would be shocked to hear those kinds of words escaping a little angel like you." He indicates the tomahawk throw,"Let me show you how to do this as well so you can come back and run this program on your own if you want to."

Nightingale has posed:
"Then those very same people haven't heard me in the middle of a sewing project gone wrong," Shannon grumbles, trotting off to retrieve the blade. But she doesn't return it to its place on the table. Oh, no.

"This is a matter of pride now."

Once more, she faces the target. Once more, she takes aim, and winds up for the throw. Once more, the blade slices through the air....

...THUNK! It might have hit the outer ring of the target, but it was still a hit!

Warpath has posed:
"Be wary of pride shik'isn." he comments softly, but nods as she takes another shot at it. He's patient. Dangerously patient at times. He picks up another blade and after she tries he nods in approval. He sets to throw again, indicating she watch,"Build energy from the ground, up through your legs, into your torso, down the arm, and...." he throws it, another loud thump in the middle of the target.

Nightingale has posed:
"OH. That makes a weird amount of sense. Reminds me of some training with Logan down by the lake, only it was some basic hand to hand. Building up energy the same way." Once the winged teen was able to make a connection to prior experience like that, the next attempt flowed much more easily, with the blade flying from her hand with a touch less effort--even if with still markedly less grace than Warpath.

     THUNK!

This time, the blade lands closer to the center of the target, though still not in the bull's-eye. But a hit is a hit!

Warpath has posed:
An approving nod and Jimmy mutters,"Very good. Come back and practice. I know you have plenty of other things to do, but it's a good way to focus your mind." She gets a hint of a smile and he nods towards the tomahawk throw next,"You're a natural. Maybe I'll take you to the farms next time and see how well you acclamate to other work."

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon just laughs, and shakes her head. "Other work, like what, exactly?" she asks, following Warpath on over to the tomahawk throw. "How similar is this to the dagger throw, anyhow?" Stepping back, she observes for the moment, watching with a critical eye as the lesson is underway.

Warpath has posed:
"Class and Danger Room training." he replies and takes up the tomahawk. The stance is different. The way his arm moves is different as well. The follow through isn't terribly similar either,"Release point is different as well." he explains and then releases the weapon to throw. Like the knife it buries deep into the wooden target.

Nightingale has posed:
The first time Warpath goes through the motions of the tomahawk throw, Shannon mirrors his stance and delivery. As he throws the weapon and lodges it in the target, she mimics the motions again, opening her hand at the point of releasing the deadly payload from her grasp. The third time, she picks up one of the practice tomahawks and, with the motions fresh in her mind and muscles, takes aim at the target, and lets the weapon fly....

THUNK! Okay, it wasn't dead center, but it was within striking distance! "Beginner's luck?" she mused, standing back and scratching her head a little bit in wonder.

Warpath has posed:
He laughs softly and replies,"Once is luck, twice is skill." He seems to be agreeing with her assessment. Crossing his arms, he waits for her to take another try. He moves to show her again, the motion. He goes through each one slow again and nods to her,"Try again."

Nightingale has posed:
Once again, Shannon goes through the throwing motions, sans tomahawk. Once again, she eyes the target, but purses her lips ever so slightly, brows furrowing as she tries to think on how she did well to begin with. Once more, she picks up one of the tomahawks, winds up for the throw, and lets the weapon fly towards the target....

...THUNK! It may hit, but it hits the outer ring, and the tomahawk does not seem to bite very deeply into the target. Rather, it looks as if it might clatter to the floor if a good, stiff breeze were to blow through the room.

Scratching the back of her head, Shannon grins sheepishly. "Yep. Beginner's luck."

Warpath has posed:
"Once is luck, twice is skill." he agrees, but doesn't tease. He's just in teacher mode and watching over one that means the most to him. He tosses another that hits right next to hers,"All in the wrist and the distance." he advises and then steps back to let her try again.

Nightingale has posed:
Once again, Shannon steps back to observe the particulars of how Warpath throws the tomahawk. She watches how his arm draws back, how he holds the weapon, and at what point he releases itto send it on its way towards the target. She mimics the motion with an empty hand once, to commit it to muscle memory. Picking up a tomahawk, she goes through the motion a second time without releasing the deadly weapon towards its mark. But the third time is quick, hard, her motions flowing as she releases the tomahawk and sends it sailing through the air....

     ...THUNK!

     "Bull's-eye!"

Warpath has posed:
"I think she's got it." he replies with a smirk and glances at a clock on the wall. He shakes his head and adds,"We have to give up Danger Room time. Ours is up and Alexis needs it for her use. Thank you for showing up." He walks over and shuts down the hologram.

Nightingale has posed:
Whether Warpath likes it or no, Shannon just marches right on over and sweeps him up in a great big hug, wings and all. "Thank you, shik'isn. Hopefully I won't need any of this, but at least if I can do, I can say I was taught by the best." She smiles up at him, eyes a-twinkle. "It was definitely an interesting exercise. Think we could try this again sometime soon?"
