Date of Scene: 25 November 2022
Location: Suite G1 Guest, The Triskelion
Synopsis: After the atttack at the shelter, Nick and Skye get back to the Trisk just in time for a wandering Winter Solider to come by and ask what the hell is going on.
Cast of Characters: Phantasm (Drago), Winter Soldier, Quake
Tinyplot: Fortunate Son

Phantasm (Drago) has posed:
While not at all abandoned, the hallways of the Trisk are a tad less crowded than most are familiar with. Being that it's only morning by sheer definition and not by general desire has much influence over the reason why. Another factor is just a few hours ago, the day was still technically being referred to as Thanksgiving. As for one Nick Drago who has ended up having to call this place home for several months, he's experienced this ghost town effect more than others. And what better time than now to share this experience with Skye?

But perhaps it is time to rewind a little as to WHY Skye is escorting one Nick Drago to his suite instead of the similarly aged young man doing this on his own? Well for that one needs to look back to yesterday.

Ok technically two days ago when Nick was supposedly going to BRIEFLY go to the shelter to help them with unloading a food truck which led to the truck being a lot fuller than initially projected, which led to him actually being there on Thanksgiving. Which led to this. And That. And- Boom. The dining hall is extra ventilated now and a lot of darkly clad, previously armed figures had to be rolled out of the hall in stretchers.

Wait. What?

It loses something in translation. But either way. Nick's still in one piece. He can't say the same for the guys in black. And Skye may have made some police officers cry in the process of getting him out of the one interview.

"...I hope Christmas isn't this messed up." Nick mutters, breaking the quiet of the hallway trek.
Winter Soldier has posed:
Ah, the day after Thanksgiving. A day of families, a day of being thankful for all that has gone well in your life, a day in short for someone like James Buchanan Barnes to be either dishing out food for the homeless or otherwise pretending to be homeless to blend in on some undercover operation. Possibly even, if the stars align, to shut himself away with a good book about experimental firearms, and just let the world be the world for a while. Hannukah is different, that's a time to meet what remains of the family, but Thanksgiving? No, turkeys are safe around him.

This means that, inevitably, he is Schrodinger's Winter Soldier: either haunting the Triskellion, or not. The truth can only be obtained by observation, at which point the uncertainty waveform collapses, and he either is or isn't.

Oh boy, is someone having bad luck lately.

The first tremors in the Uncertainty Waveform come as an urgent 'Whurf' from around the corner, soon materialising into a very energetic Lilli. Who goes straight for Nick, having identified him as someone in urgent need of comfort and companionship. But alas, where one sees Lilli, there must perforce be another presence.

The Uncertainty Waveform collapses utterly upon the rounding of the corner by Bucky, wearing an oddly wooden and expressionless expression. It's one of his faces when he hasn't quite decided how to handle something yet. But he comes to a stop, arms crossed, looking at Nick and Skye.

    An eyebrow lifts.

"Does either one of you want to explain why I have a very angry email from a Detective Moreau? And why I'm going to have to spend a few hours soon taking custody of evidence from the NYPD?"
Quake has posed:
Skye snickered. "Christmas is another day of the year, just like any other." Don't tell Clint! She tries to make it festive for all their friends without families, but really? Christmas was just another day.

Following Nick into his quarters, she lifted her chin and pointed at Nick. "Are you going to tell him, or should I?" It was going to be quite simplistic if Skye did it.
Phantasm (Drago) has posed:
Lilli may indeed be the first horseman of the Bucopalypse but she is a very floofy and a goodest girl of the Bucopalypse. Nick's next action of opening the suite door is immediately followed by another as he smiles to the dog before crouching down to give the pettings. "Hey Lilli."

When the dog's owner walks into the picture, one of the overhead lights hitting him just so casts a slight shadow upon the smaller man. Nick glances up to the uncertain expression of the SHIELD agent. The posed question causes for the musician to lift a brow, mirroring the elder man's expression before he looks over to the Skye already entering the suite. "Damn you move quick." He comments, "All that with just a phone?"

Nick starts to get up, nodding to Bucky. "Yeah we have an idea why." With a sweep of the hand, he invites Bucky in to the suite as well.

Lilli needs no invitation for she is doggo.

Nick lingers near the door til those who want in are in and the door is clear to be closed. "So, The shelter I sometimes help out at? One of their walls got the same type of treatment as Wade's. Only without the bullet holes."
Winter Soldier has posed:
There is only so much authority one can exert while their dog is making a fuss of someone. It was Lilli's job to keep Bucky on the straight and narrow, and now that he has mastered that art, it's her solemn duty to make sure he never gets too serious on people he counts as friends. She's very much a safety switch, and Nick gets the advantage of her full attention. Thus, he is safe from a Buckening.

The man himself enters the suite, lingering near the door, listening to at least the preliminary explanations. And they're good ones, they make sense. At least, they make sense for someone who knows both Nick /and/ Skye. Together, the three of them form the superteam known as Fury's future ulcer.

His expression does shift fractionally when the violence is mentioned, and he's almost instantly on track. "Any idea who or why? Did it seem like the wall was their preferred ingress point, or was it a victim of the explosion? And if they blew the wall in to get in, two further questions... any idea on the type of explosive, and were there any incidental casualties?"

He did, eventually, remember innocent bystanders.
Quake has posed:
"Don't look at me!" Skye held up her hands. "I was dragged into this after. Good thing to, or else Nick here would have been down at the police station answering their questions. And even if he wasn't guilty, I don't imagine he wanted to answer some of their questions."

"Right?" Her glance fell onto Nick for a moment. Then turning to Bucky, quirking a brow, she explains, "It sounded like Hydra or the like. I didn't think we wanted to air our dirty laundry to them. I kind of made me sound more important than I was."

She shrugs. What Fury doesn't know.. Well, he would eventually. But that was a problem for another day.

Finding a seat, she pulled out her laptop, and booted it up in anticipation.
Phantasm (Drago) has posed:
"She got there about when Moreau was about to go into the same round of questions for the fifth time." Nick supplies with a nod, both in agreement to her initial observation and to her assessment to how she handled Moreau. "He did not seem all that pleased."

Feeling the pressing of dog to leg, Nick glances down to Lilli and succumbs to the hint, crouching down to get down to her level, completing the transition to sitting when his ass hits the floor. He brings his hands up to pet Lilli.

"It was after the dinner finished. The residents had moved to the sleeping quarters so just volunteers in the hall doing cleanup. The wall was blown in and that's how they were coming in. As far as I can tell the only people who got hurt were the ones busting in. The shelter had a bit of powerful help that day." Nick pauses, "More specifically a Power Girl."

Nick looks back to Lilli, continuing to pet her. "I don't know my explosives but I'd assume the same as with the apartment building. Similar sized hole."
Winter Soldier has posed:
"That's something, at least." Bucky muses, eyes seeing something in the far distance that is likely only tangentially related to his current reality. Facts being processed, most likely, and deductions made... although, given his nature and the amount of information currently available, they're probably more abductions than deductions. "Similar explosive mass, similar placement. But then that only means they had the same demo training, and that last incident was near enough government standard. Hmmm... guess I'm actually going to have to pay attention to what the NYPD found for a change."

Poor bastards. They're actually going to have Agent Barnes descend on them.

"And if they are related, then we'll have to find the nest and burn it." There, assessment done, plan of action sketched, future violence penciled into busy schedule. And then a deep breath.

"Thanks for pulling his ass out of the fire, Skye. Those detectives aren't too bright but they occasionally get something right, and they're pretty persistent. I'll step on Moreau tomorrow, should give them time to wrap things up for me."
Quake has posed:
"Trust me, I have had lots of practice lying my way out of similar situations." Skye points at her laptop. "Hacker." D'uh.

But the rest of it..

"How did they know you were there? I mean, that amount of firepower wasn't by accident. No matter what Moraeu thinks. Even should we let him think that in the end." That was Bucky's decision.
Phantasm (Drago) has posed:
Nick lets out a bit of a sigh as Bucky goes through the general analysis of the information presented. The general conclusion is not a surprise but the confirmation is less than desired. "Persistent and annoying." Nick agrees, adding his own comment on top of the kudos Bucky has prepared for Skye.

The code cracker's question does cause for Nick to glance away from Lilli for a moment, looking to the other female in the room. "Well, before the attack on the condo, no matter how busy the tour schedule was, we'd make room for helping out on Thanksgiving and Christmas with the shelter's dinner. But that got scrapped and instead I try for less traditional dates." He pauses, "I wasn't even planning to go in this week but there was a bit of an emergency. And then- Well, one thing led to another and I was there for Thanksgiving dinner."
Winter Soldier has posed:
"So either someone at the shelter is not who they seem..." and Bucky has played the part of a harmless homeless many a time "... or someone was watching you. Either way, there will be evidence somewhere to figure it out." What else was he going to do with his time, this time of year?

"I have to ask, but when you say Power Girl was there, I think I already know... are there going to be corpses, and if so, how many? Did any of the attackers managed to get away?"
Quake has posed:
"Did you ever think that the circumstances were arranged to make certain you were there for the dinner?" Syke asked.

Bucky said the exact thing she was thinking of next. So she waited for the answer.
Phantasm (Drago) has posed:
Nick closes his eyes, thinking back to the exchange. "...I don't think anyone died but a number of them probably wish they had. They had to get a few ambulances. As for circumstances, Well one of the freezers failed and basically spoiled a sizable chunk of the perishables. Which is why I went over, to help unload the truck with the replacement food. There was a lot more to unload than expected which more or less led to me being there Thanksgiving day. There was a volunteer who was a bit of an ass about them being short handed with the cooking. But that brings up another question."

The musician frowns, "If any of that was a means to get me there, why not go all in the day before and not when there's more people on that side of the building?"
Winter Soldier has posed:
As new information is presented, more options become available, and Bucky nods both to Skye and Nick as they make their points. "Doesn't fit the usual style. And by that I mean the execution, not the lure, because that was inspired. They knew you'd come and help, altruism is your weak point." Ouch.

"And then they made sure you stayed, because you don't leave a job half done either. All that can be coincidence, except for the wall being blown in. There's an outside possibility you weren't the target, but let's not fool ourselves."

And then it dawns... that little bit of information that Nick mentioned a while ago. "You said the wall wasn't perforated, are you saying they came in without firearms, didn't fire their firearms, or didn't get a chance to? Those are three very different scenarios, and I need to know which one we're dealing with."

At the same time, Lilli is not impressed by the sudden lack of attention, and licks Nick's hand. Still here human! Relax, give pats, happy pats!
Quake has posed:
Did Nick really need to ask that?

"Not to mention there was a weird kind of synchronicity with taking a superstar while a whole bunch of witnesses watched." But Bucky had a point. Parts of it were like Hydra.. and parts were not.

Skye frowned. "Sometimes Hydra shares.." She puts air quotes around the word 'shares'. "..a job. Remember when they took me, with Kyle?"
Phantasm (Drago) has posed:
"Ah!" Nick looks back to Lilli, "Sorry." He murmurs to the dog before starting to pet her again. One could easily say Lilli's method to get what she wanted was better than the asshole volunteer. But then again if that volunteer tried Lilli's method that'd be more reason for concern.

Doggo appeased, Nick can focus on the follow up question. "They did have guns. But I only recall the one shot and that got blocked."

Skye mentioning sharing jobs gets Nick to look to her curiously. "You mean like outsourcing?"
Winter Soldier has posed:
"Outsourced a local gang?" Bucky asks at nearly the same time, raising an eyebrow at Nick as if to claim a coke for that jynx, and then ponders it. "Could be. Certainly doesn't sound like the usual HYDRA troops, they wouldn't have hesitated to be a bit more... generous with their bullets. Most of them believe in volume, even if only to mask the real target."

With a half-sigh, he rubs his face and then checks his watch. "If I go now, I might be able to find that stray round before the NYPD grabs it, and still make it in time to grab their evidence before their morning briefing." He looks at Nick and Skye. "Watch Lilli for me? I might be a while, and she needs some play time."
Quake has posed:
Skye sighs. "Could be. If they don't have to figure it out, it's very likely that Hydra could use them to get what they want in the end." Which is to say, suddenly more group could be responsible.

"Let me go and dig through the chatter. I'll let you guys know if there are groups we should investigate."
Phantasm (Drago) has posed:
Nick gestures over to the fridge as Bucky looks over to him. Seemingly reading the agent's expression. A nod is given to Bucky's request. Reading the other message hidden within. "Yeah I'll stay with her." He agrees, "I think Bear's going to enjoy the visit."

The added clarity of using a local gang for the outsourcing causes for him to focus more on Lili. "Or police officers." He adds in to Skye's stated research. "Patrols not enough to take note of a gathering of like dressed people in a nearby alley but when shit happens, amazing response time."
Winter Soldier has posed:
It's like another block just got added to the construct that is Bucky's idea of what went down, this time on his way out of the door, after grabbing himself that coke. "Exactly how short was that response time?"

He knows the average response time of police units in any given area of most of the US intimitely, and a suspiciously rapid or suspiciously slow response is, well, suspicious.

And then he seems to change his mind, waving the question away. "Never mind, I'll get their own version of it. Should all be in their call logs. And they had best not be missing..."

At that, he gives one last fond look at Lilli and then heads out. On the treshold, his expression changes... Cold as ice, cold as a Siberian winter.

The Winter Soldier is on the hunt.
