Cast of Characters: Polaris, Cypher

Polaris has posed:
Sundays are always quiet in the mansion. Taking advantage of this, Lorna is in the rec room keeping an eye on the odd student present and working on her own homework, typing away on her laptop. The instructor, sometimes diplomat, and grad student has a thermos of coffee at the ready to spar trips to the kitchen to refuel.

Cypher has posed:
Doug has his earbuds turned up so loud that it's possible to hear them even despite them being soundly in his ears, and he's kind of dance-walking as he comes into the rec-room. And he's singing along, too. "Woooah-ooooh-oooh-ooh, I got a love that keeps me waitin', whoa-oooh-oooh-oooh, I got a love that keeps me waitin! I'm a lonely boy, I'm a lonely boooooy!" He shimmies along, before he finds a table, and sets up a laptop he cadged from school supply, and settles into an overstuffed chair and pops it open, to light the internet on FIRE.

Polaris has posed:
Glancing up from her own work, Lorna leans back in her chair, unsure how he hasn't gone deaf playing his music so loud. Youngsters. She continues eying him as she pours her coffee from the thermos. Just to be trouble she starts talking at Doug, mouthing the words with no actual volume.

Cypher has posed:
Doug is sitting there in his stripey socks and his lean-legged jeans and his Xavier's School hoodie, the blogosphere open before him, before he looks up and squints, and then he grins, as wide as a saucer. He takes his earplugs out of his ears, and kills his music, before he walks by and hipsliiiides past Lorna to get something from the mini-fridge that's doubtless hidden in here SOMEWHERE. "You know I can read lips, right? Also, I'm not gonna lie, way back in the day we did fill one of the walls with cheese. I wonder if you guys ever found it."

Polaris has posed:
"OH, you know I'd forgotten?" Lorna kicks herself and drinks her coffee as he slides around the counter to the snack bar. "If you put cheese in a wall, I will be expecting you to un-cheese it-though surely it's molded by now and has been handled." She says dryly, doing her best teacher voice.

Cypher has posed:
"This is a big house." Doug says. "I mean, possibly? I don't even know if I remember, it's just that a hole got kicked in it and for some reason Quentin thought it'd be hilarious to get a whole bunch of spray cheese and just fill the inside of the wall with it before it got patched, and I don't know if anybody ever noticed... it was a more innocent time, I guess." He pulls out a can of Soder and pops the tab on it, before he pauses, and then says, "Did it just get cold in here?"

Polaris has posed:
"No?" Lorna asks and furrows her brow. "You are holding a soda can but things feel the same as they did." she tells the...not student? "So...how are things for you lately? I mean, are you adjusting well?" She asks and balances on the back two legs of her chair as they speak.

Cypher has posed:
"Something's just... off, is all. Like... like something's coming and the whole school is suddenly... chilly. It's probably just in my head." Doug says. "Like... like..." He shakes his head, and says, "I don't know how to describe it but--" He says, "I'm adjusting all right. I'm not going to lie, I miss the old gang, and it kind of sucks being pretty much on my own. I haven't worked up the courage to go confront my parents yet, even though my dad WAS the school's lawyer for years and knew more about what was going on than he let on--" He shakes his head, slowly, "I just don't have the heart. But I've decided I'm going to start taking journalism and compsci classes, mostly online."

Polaris has posed:
"Online's my degree method of choice." Polaris nods and looks about. She closes her eyes a moment and draws a deep breath. "The school feels normal. People where there should be people, I don't sense anything...lingering nearby, not for at least a mile." She says with eyes still closed. "Perhaps you're just ill at ease with the...newness of your living again." She suggests and looks at the young man. "Reach out to your parents when and if you're ready. We'll be there to support you."

Cypher has posed:
"It's weird." Doug says. "I sometimes... pick up on things. Disturbances that are a long way off. I'm just really sensitive to stuff. I went on a daytrip to New York, and I was able to stop a purse snatcher because I identified the way he was weaving through the crowd, before he even zeroed in on his target." He returns to his seat and sits with his legs curled under him, and he says, "I'm not quite sure how my powers work anymore. I used to just be good with languages and computers. Now it's like I'm seeing the communication underlying EVERYTHING." He takes a sip of his soda, and then says, "Like, I can tell when Logan is really thinking about beer."

Polaris has posed:
"So, all the time?" Lorna wonders with a crooked smile and sits up to drink her coffee. Looking at Doug she considers. "I bet it's alarming. But predictive behavior is sort of an algorithm, like language and coding....perhaps you're seeing the bigger patterns now and always could, but those powers were latent. We never really pushed you past your breaking point, not really. It might have saved you if we had." She murmurs a little sad before her lips quirk and she asks "Do you still feel Warlock in there?"

Cypher has posed:
"I'm not sure where Warlock is. In theory if I interfaced with a computer I could use the Techno-Organic virus to locate him--" Doug rubs his chin, "But that would be an invasion of his privacy. Lorna, I can't help but think they all forgot about me." He shakes his head, "And maybe that's for the best. When people die, you don't linger. You remember the good times and move on with the business of living." He takes another sip of his soda, "So I need to move on with living my life. I don't know HOW you could've pushed me--maybe this had to do with the techno-organic virus. Maybe it would've happened naturally... who can say? It's all conjecture."

Polaris has posed:
"Well, you still have your instructors. Don't be afraid to reach out to your classmates when you're ready. You have a life to live too, and you shouldn't feel isolated because you were dead for a while. We're mutants after all...strange is sort of our normal." Lorna advises and watches him over her coffee cup.

Cypher has posed:
Doug Ramsey looks down at his soda, and his brows draw down, and he says, "I suppose so. It's so STRANGE. It hasn't been that long, but the world's moved on." He heaves a great sigh, and says, "And Graydon Creed is maneuvering to run for President of the United States."

Polaris has posed:
"Ugh. Well, there's always Genosha." Lorna says with a crooked smile. "I'm sure people won't vote in that bigot. Too many umm, what's the word we use? Metas running about, mutants, aliens, otherwise powered...it's not his world anymore. Man's a dinosaur." Lorna shakes her head and looks at Doug. "Your death was tragic. Many of them withdraw, this place held painful memories. They might be absent, but it doesn't mean the world moved on from losing you in it Douglas."

Cypher has posed:
"People say that, but then the worst case scenario comes to pass." Doug says, before he begins tapping notes into his computer. "His language is ugly, bloody-minded. There's genocide between his words. He'a a clown now, but a homicidal one." Then he pauses, and tilts his head, and says, "But that's what the world DOES, Lorna. I'm the one who needs to adapt. It's all right. Did you know, I don't even have really clear memories of that night? Dreams, sometimes... but my memories... not clear at all." He pauses, and then he adds, "Magneto came to see me, while I was out in Salem Center. I think he wanted to make sure I wasn't a fraud. He invited me to visit Genosha. I... think I might."

Polaris has posed:
"Yes, I'm sure my father is deeply interested in you." Lorna nods and pauses. She considers her juggling act of roles before continuing after a long moment. "I want you to go where you feel you should, but do not feel pressured by him. If you go and don't like Genosha? That's ok." She looks at Doug seriously.

Cypher has posed:
Doug looks up, and then he closes his computer. He gets up, and then walks over to Lorna, to hug her, briefly. "Everyone has wanted to protect me, even when they were wary. You, Jean, Hank. Magneto. Even Iceman, though I suppose I rolled over a little too easy to Black Widow on that one." He says, "I really appreciate it. And really, from what I know about Genosha, the problem isn't that people don't like it, it's that it's TOO appealing. From a distance, it looks like a world of make-believe." He puts his hands on Lorna's arms. "I want to see for myself. But I think what I really want is to be an X-Man. Even if I DO wind up just flying a computer for the rest of you."

Polaris has posed:
Lorna hugs Doug back and nods. "See it. It's not paradise yet, but it could be some day." She admits and quirks a smile. "If you're sure you want to be on a team again let's get you training, getting a grip on your power now." She tells him. "I do want to protect you, like all my students, and subjects on Genosha, but you have the right to chose and lead your life as you best see fit too."

Cypher has posed:
"This is my family now." Doug says, archly, "And as far as what I'm willing to put on the line, I don't have anything to prove there." He nods, once, for emphasis. "All right. Whatever challenge you put in front of me, I'll rise to meet it."

Polaris has posed:
"It's not how far you're willing to go Doug. It's making sure you're at your best form when we move out as a team. Teamwork and control, that's what makes the X-Men so effective. We've mastered that we need in a fight and know how to assist each other." Lorna puts a hand on Doug's shoulder. "A few mornings in the training room and I'm sure you'll pick it right back up." She adds warmly and looks to her things. "I should get my paper wrapped up. Deadlines."
