The Plight of Oleg Magnusson
Date of Scene: 15 August 2017
Location: Office of Nelson and Murdock, New York City
Synopsis: Agent Romanova and Steve Rogers visit Matt Murdock as they seek information about one of his former clients.
Cast of Characters: Black Widow (Romanoff), Captain America, Daredevil

Black Widow (Romanoff) has posed:
The office of Nelson and Murdock isn't the usual destination for agents of SHIELD. In this situation, it was one of several leads being looked into. Natasha drove, taking the convertible and running with the top down while speeding through the streets of the city. One of her many vices. She hated speed limits. She had passed over the file to her partner for this visit, giving him the chance to peruse the information.
In Pakistan, a school bus had blown up. The tragedy was made worse because it was an obvious attack as opposed to some terrible accident. The pictures hadn't been pretty. She'd taken them out before leaving the Triskelion, not thinking Steve really needed to be subjected to them. The text in the file was enough, explained the loss of lifes before they even had a chance to grow up.
There was a suspect already, one who had come up quickly through the international law enforcement circles. His name was Oleg Magnusson. He had been an immigrant seeking asylum in the United States. During that time, he had been represented by Nelson and Murdock.
"I figure he might talk to me," she admits to Steve as she pulls up in front of the building that houses the office. "At least I hope he will." She opens the door end glances up at the building, eyes going to the floor that is their destination. A moment later, she's heading for the front door.

Captain America has posed:
Steve had been perusing the dossier while Natasha drove, his eyes show his unique brand of empathy for the loss of lives so young. "And I trust you went through proper channels to OK this little visit?" He said, only a slight cheek in his tone.

Cap closed the door on the convertible, and up the stoop stairs. Cap opened the door, letting in the Black Widow before heading upwards. He knocked on the office door, Nelson and Murdock. "What do you think? Good cop, Bad cop?" He offered, obviously he could be either, or simply be a fly on the wall. Either way, Captain America's presence did say something, it meant business.

Daredevil has posed:
It's a little off from usual business hours there in the hallway just outside of the Law Offices of Nelson and Murdock. The accounting firm has long gone home, the temp agency is closed as well, the lights dark in those neighboring offices. But that glass windowed door with the legal lettering has a light still shining on the inside.
But when the door is knocked on they'll hear a voice come from inside. "Come in, it's open!" A voice that probably sounds familiar to one if not the other.
And when that door is opened it will reveal the still somewhat in transition office of Nelson and Murdock. There's a receptionist desk in the front along with some bench seating for clients to wait, a few potted plants on the floor scattered about. There's at able with some magazines for people waiting. But right now it's empty and only marginally lit by the dimmed light. The only source of greater illumination is the office off to the right, with the door partially ajar.
It's through that door that a tall man in red-lensed glasses emerges, a cane held gently in his hand as he advances. "Just put the pizza on the desk, I'll be right with you." He says as he steps out, a hand finding the edge of Karen's receptionist desk. Steve might well take him at face value. But Natasha... she has some insight to know that he's probably making a small joke.

Black Widow (Romanoff) has posed:
A hint of a smile is the reaction to his comment about the pizza. While Steve may not know his special gifts, Natasha does. He knows exactly who is in the room. Well, at least one of them. He would know her heartbeat, her heat signature, even her scent. It was enough to make one self-conscious about when they had last showered knowing that sort of information. He even knows the kind of soap she uses from that hint in the air. No perfume or makeup since they are not her usual work mode. Only undercover for those goodies.
"No pizza, Mr. Murdock," she says in that soft voice he knows as well. Her use of his last name instead of the more information version lets him know this is a business call. "Captain Rogers and myself are here to ask a few questions if you have a moment?" She moves forward, taking up a spot in front of the desk but keeping a polite distance from Matt.

Captain America has posed:
Captain Rogers gives a nod, before he realizes his folly and blushes just a tinge. "Mister Murdock I certainly hope we didn't catch you at a bad time." He offers, giving the man a once-over. The Captain luckily made sure he was properly showered after training. Not that he knew about Matt's abilities.

"It concerns a client of yours, an Oleg Magnusson." Steve offered, before he stood in front of the desk as well, not sitting down until offered, and certainly not before Natasha took her seat, no sir.

Daredevil has posed:
Matt had been stepping around the front of the desk, stopping in front of the two of the SHIELD agents and settling down on the edge of it, resting his cane across his lap. The lenses in his red glasses cast their images back to them as he turns his head slightly from one to the other, as if placing their voices. He smiles a bit, "Good to meet you again, Agent Romanova." He tilts his head slightly to the other side, "Captain Rogers." His brow knits together slightly as a question conjures itself in his thoughts but he gives it no voice.
His attention seems to remain between the two of them, his head lifting slightly. "Oleg Magnusson." He lets the name hang there a moment, a crease marring his brow. "I remember him... before we established this firm."
There's another pause and he nods. "If I can help you I will try." One eyebrow lifts as he turns his head slightly in the Widow's direction.

Black Widow (Romanoff) has posed:
"Oleg Magnusson is wanted for questioning in regards to an explosion in Pakistan," Natasha says bluntly, not bothering to mince words or dance around the subject. He would be able to tell any deception or omissions anyway. Yet, she didn't share his secrets with her partner, something that shows the devil of Hell's Kitchen still has her loyalties in some ways. Certainly it's been some time but they are still friends, when they get the chance to see one another. It is always rare to do so anymore. She tends to not keep up as she should, a hazard of being who and what she is. Not a good friend certainly.
"A school bus was blown up killing 32 children. Three survived but are in critical condition," she adds, watching Matt closely as she does so. He can uses his senses. She can use her eyes to read him, to know his reactions by the smallest of expression changes.

Captain America has posed:
"Thank you." Is all Cap offers, he would let Widow take the lead here. Steve carried on observing, looking to Natasha as Murdock mentions seeing her again. He raises his brow to her, only a little taken aback, though it was most likely none of his business, if it had any bearing on the task at hand, she would have told Rogers. There had been a level of trust there between the two.

Daredevil has posed:
At the mention of the tragedy, Matt's brow comes together hard and they can see behind those glasses the way his eyes tighten. The facial expressions are still there, couched and hidden to most, but there. He turns his head to the side and lower, hands taking up the cane in his hand and holding it tightly for a moment. He murmurs to himself something quietly, then lifts his chin to focus upon them both.
"That is... a horrible thing to hear of." He bites his lower lip, features shifting towards a pensive pained expression as he shakes his head. "I am afraid if I had information on him..." he lifts a hand from the cane, fingers flaring as if to stay what protest he expects to be made.
"I could not share it. Client attorney privilege. But..." He can hear the subtle shifts in their pulse, the hammering of their hearts, can tell the faint heightening of tension in the room. "I can tell you that I find it... hard to believe he could do such a thing." He turns his head towards Natasha, "Agent Romanova. I just would find it _very_ hard to believe he could."

Black Widow (Romanoff) has posed:
A faint frown mars her expression, lost on Matt but visible to Steve. That is not the answer she was hoping for. Client attorney privilege be damned in a situation like this. Matt will be able to tell she's annoyed easily enough. But as he continues, her frown doesn't disappear but the anger dissipates.
"He is not capable of this?" she asks flatly. Not asking for his opinion. She is asking for fact, which she knows is what he was giving her a moment ago. "Because if it turns out you're wrong..." She doesn't have to say it. They all know that if he's a killer and this is the type of violence he propagates, there could be more deaths on their hands by inaction.
She doesn't have to hear an answer. She can see for herself in every line of Matt's body. She turns her head to Steve. "We're barking up the wrong tree."

Captain America has posed:
"I understand your point Mister Murdock, we just wouldn't be doing our job if we weren't covering all bases." As Natasha drops the subject entirely, he goes with it, trusting whatever the other two were saying in subtext. Steve exhaled sharply through his nostrils. If it was truly a dead end then they had been back to square one or at least close to it. "Then we go back to the source, if not Magnusson, then is someone setting him up?" It's no surprise that he is true to his words.

Daredevil has posed:
For his part, Matt Murdock knows the weight of this decision that they're making, and the leads they're following up. He knows that him impressing upon the Widow this 'feeling' of his will have real world consequences on the path of this investigation. So his brow furrows but he redoubles his assurance with a single firm nod to her.
Rising to his feet he says to them, "If you give me time, and a way I can get in touch with you, I may be able to find something. Mr. Mangusson spent a lot of time in an immigrant community with people that held a grudge. If you've got something connecting him to the situation, or intelligence, could be someone from his past."
There's a frown as he nods towards Cap, accepting that that was a possibility. "If I find anything from other people... I would not be... as bound as I am in relaying that information."

Black Widow (Romanoff) has posed:
"Anything you can do would be appreciated," Natasha says, knowing she's going to have to give Steve some sort of explanation later. Yet, she will nto reveal the exact why of her confidence in Matt. His secrets are his own to share or not share, as the case may be. She would never take that from him. One of the many reasons she is only at a certain level in SHIELD. She tends to do what she feels is right, without necessarily having her ideals agree with those of the agency. The Director tended to hate that.
    Natasha didn't care.
"All of the intelligence points to him. A little too perfectly," she admits. "It was too easy to track him down. I can see it as a set-up possibly."

Captain America has posed:
Steve looked to Matt. "Mister Murdock, is there anything you can tell us about Mister Magnusson's case that was out of the ordinary? He was seeking asylum in the United States for a reason." Steve was grasping at straws here, but there had to be some kind of connection there.

Cap had put his finger to his chin, he wasn't sure what to make of the situation, but for now, he was doing all he could to keep things moving, not focusing on the dead end.

Daredevil has posed:
Turning his head slightly at the sound of Steve's voice, Matt gives a nod as he reaches up and adjusts the hang of his glasses with a push of a forefinger. He takes a steadying breath and frowns, then adds. "It's likely I won't come up with anything." The lawyer says as he mitigates expectations, his head turning to the side back towards Natalia. "But I am troubled."
A moment passes as he considers the Captain's words and responds, "He was seeking asylum due to his wife's family and their persecution in Northern India." He reaches a hand into the pocket of his jacket and pulls forth a cellphone with a blank face and a curious interface. He lightly touches the side once against a series of small pins that extend. "If I may have one of your numbers, I will be in touch as soon as I can."

Black Widow (Romanoff) has posed:
More questions and no answers. This is the part of the job no one gets told about. The dead ends, false leads, information that just doesn't pan out. In the movies and television, everything woks out for the best. The leads are a nice trail of bread crumbs that unerringly get to the bad guy.
If only it was that simple.
She quickly rattles off a phone number, pausing halfway through so he has time to get it all punched into his phone while she's speaking. She'd offer a business card but hers don't have Braille. Not that he can't read it anyway but to keep up his appearances, this is the better option. "We thank you for your time and cooperation, Mr. Murdock. If you find out anything, please don't hesitate to call. Day or night." The door is open again. If he chooses to use it.

Captain America has posed:
Captain Rogers stood up from the chair, indeed it was not the most glamorous part of the job. But like many other things, he attempted to take it in stride. "Thank you again Mister Murdock, Matt, if I may." He said, reaching out a hand to the litigator before starting to make his way out.

Daredevil has posed:
Once the number is keyed in and locked down, he'll slide his thumb over the surface causing it to rumble faintly. That done he repockets it into his jacket and gives them both a nod. "I'll be in touch." Which, he will be, once he has something to give to them. But then there's a moment where he seems about to say something else. He turns his head slightly, reflective lenses shifting between Natalia and Steve...
But then he extends a hand towards Steve and says solemnly. "It was an honor to meet you, sir." As he reaches to the side it'll take a moment to find it. And then he'll give a firm shake and say levelly, "Thank you for your service."
Once that's done he'll step back and retake his cane.
