Cast of Characters: Corusca, Star Sapphire

Corusca has posed:
It's an evening on a Saturday. What could someone possibly be doing on a Saturday? Well, anything. Now when you're a dragon, you plan, you plot, and you scheme. So when you haven't seen your would-be girlfriend in a solid month, you want things to be perfect. Or at least a surprise. Once again, she pondered how to do that. She scried upon Carol first to make sure she was home. Then, she summoned an imp to be impish. Ring the doorbell. Once, twice, fine be annoying if you like and ring all of the doorbells on the floor. Sheesh. Imps. Just be sure to ring the one numbered 6201. At least twice.

Meanwhile, Miranda considered her attire. She wanted to share her new citizenship at the very least so something Grecian. So it was she opted for a stola style dress without sleeves and a drooping neckline. A braided rope in gold at her waist to match her long flowing hair that she's let down. And.. a bottle of wine.

DINGDONGDINGDONGINGDONGDINGONG... whoever was at the door had to be five years old. Or the doorbell was broken and stuck. Maybe a five year old broke it.

Star Sapphire has posed:
Carol looks up from her reading suddenly enough to make her black hair fly: she'd honestly forgotten her apartment has a doorbell, and the sound of it surprises her more than the repetition of the ringing. After a second, her hand goes to her breastbone not in surprise but in a now habitual gesture to make sure her power ring is still on the necklace she wears. It's there. She folds the page, closes the book, and walks to the door to open it curiously. There was a moment's debate during the walk whether she should put on shoes, but she decided against in case she needs to take to her heels. You never know.

Corusca has posed:
Nope. Nobody there. The guy down the hall is poking his head out as well and gives Carol a squinting look as if trying to decide if she was the one who disturbed his tranquility. When the cat lady opens her door, he decides that Carol wasn't to blame.. but then there's the scream of a half dozen cats being terrorized and she quickly returns to her room in distress at her babies' noise. Thankfully, Carol doesn't share a wall with the insanity now occuring when an imp discovers a dozen cats. Chaos, thy name of Jhazok.

Meanwhile, this allows Miranda the perfect opportunity to find a pair of glasses in Carol's cabinet, frost the bottle with a little magic.. and be casually pouring wine in the living room as if there was nothing at all odd about her being there. With wine. And closed doors. So many closed doors.

Star Sapphire has posed:
Carol waves at her neighbors and calls down the hall, "Must be an electrical thing, Tom. Rock-paper-scissors to see who calls the super...? Oh, thanks, I can never find the phone number. Have a good evening! I'll see you in the gym tomorrow, you can tell me how Vampires of New York turned out." With that, she steps back into the apartment to find--
Well, she doesn't jump VERY high, at least. Props for that.
"Miranda? How on--oh lord, did you parachute in again?" A thought occurs to her. "Did you jump from an invisible jet?"
Carol's tone is... not exactly guarded, but it's less warm than it was before Miranda left. Nothing sinister; it's about what you'd expect after a month without contact, and it's a lot less bad than a person might have good cause to fear.

Corusca has posed:
There is a moment where Miranda stands holding a glass with her mouth open. "You know.. it's funny you mention the jet." Still, she seems insistent on offering the glass of wine. Whether Carol takes it or not, she'll take up her own glass and drink from it. "There was a reason I was out of touch. No service. You see.." She takes a deep breath, studying her glass a moment. "I've been speaking to someone over the last few months. A specific someone. That.. truth be told.. is a rather popular someone.. from an island.. rather out of the way." She clears her throat and paces a little.

"She happens to have an invisible jet." Ahem. "Yes, that would be Princess Diana of Themyscira." She gestures to her attire. "And, well, I've been talking to her about moving to the island.. and.. the Queen allowed it." Right. Umm. She drinks her wine down to empty and pours herself another glass. "So.. yeah.. that's news. Right? That I'm officially a citizen of Themyscira now? Crazy, huh?"

Star Sapphire has posed:
Carol accepts the glass of whatever-it-is (honestly, she pays people to know about wine for her, and she really only breaks it out for parties) and laughs a little bit. "Really? I was just making a joke about the dress. Well. Congratulations, Miranda." She raises her glass in a toast and clinks it. "So. Moving, huh?" she asks carefully.

Corusca has posed:
"Ahh." Miranda begins delicately. "Already have?" There's an almost whince at the answer. "But I still have my place in the Hamptons. I just.. won't be there much?" She takes a deep breath and sits down on the couch. "Travel's not a problem if that's what you're asking. I just.. have terrible.. okay no reception out there." She tips back the second glass and eyes it as if there's just not enough wine in the world that would get her drunk. So she puts it down empty. "I.. honestly didn't think about asking about visitors." She looks to Carol then quickly. "Not that I can't leave or anything. I'll be in New York loads. For business.. and.." She gestures somewhat helplessly towards Carol. "Anyway, I'm sure you can come visit me.. at least.. I'll ask Diana." Her eyes look towards a window then.

Star Sapphire has posed:
Carol sits down next to Miranda, careful not to do it as slowly as she wants to do in order to stall for time to think. She watches her body language carefully as she sets her wine glass down on the coffee table; her legs and arms are uncrossed, and her back is neither leaning in aggressively nor leaning away fearfully. Her voice is calm, measured, and sympathetic as she begins, "So... we should probably have a talk about this, huh?" At Miranda's acquiescence, she continues, "I, um... well, just given that you didn't tell me about this before it happened, I guess this move is a very important goal for you, huh?"

Corusca has posed:
Miranda is quiet for a time. She's leaning against the couch with her head bowed and her hands in her lap. Her forehead is crinkled as if she's in thought or mad or otherwise.. flustered. "This was not how I envisioned this." She finally says. Silent again, she looks to Carol and nods slightly. "Yes. Not that it was a goal.. necessarily.. but.. well.. it was and it wasn't. When I learned of Themyscira and its people and what they were about.. it called to me. That I needed to be a part of what they were. That who they were was exactly what I needed." She frowns. "Not to be an Amazon, per se, but to be in a world where wealth was meaningless and conflict.. was a thing that occasionally came to the island rather than was a part of it." Okay, she pours another glass of wine.

"When I spoke to Diana.. she.. well.. she understood that need. Saw that I meant it. That I would protect the island as much as it would protect me." She puts the bottle down and stews. "I'm not a warrior by choice you know.. people.. have tried to kill me for a long time. Simply because I am who I am.. and.. well.. okay so.. can I trust you aren't going to flip out on me if I share something with you?" She shifts on the couch to look Carol in the eye with a grave sincerity.

Star Sapphire has posed:
    Kill her?
Carol is too flummoxed to say anything other than, "I... can't promise before I know, but... I'll do my best?"

Corusca has posed:
"Alright..." Miranda studies her for a moment then. "I'm magical.. that is.. I can cast spells and the like." She does the witchy finger wiggle thing. "It's how I got here. Chilled the wine... rang the doorbell.. and.. it's rather why I've been around for a while and have a number of people wanting my head.. or.. my blood rather. I don't think they really want my head. Unless it's as some sick trophy." She pauses to think about that then shakes it off. "And, it's why I'm at home on Themyscira. The whole island is magical and lives at peace with itself. Here.. well.. vampires roam the streets. I met a pair of them. They seemed nice enough but still rather blood sucky." She makes fangs with her fingers. "Anyway.." She stops rambling and looks to Carol for her reaction.

Star Sapphire has posed:
Carol's mind is racing. She has more reason than most to believe in magic--she's faintly familiar with the Green Lanterns' history with the Starheart--but the possibility that this is all a hoax or some kind of madness is still the first one to come to mind. She stacks up this new information against what she knows, against the solitary island life and some of the oblique hints dropped during discussion of Miranda's husband, and she shakes her head not in negation but as if to clear it.
"Can you show me something? Something you can do, I mean?"

Corusca has posed:
"Umm.. sure?" Miranda is thinking. Looking around. She finally settles on the glass in her hand. Reaching over to take the wine cork from the table, she drops it into her wine then strokes the glass. As she does, the glass becomes malleable to her touch and closes off. A few more gestures and it has become something of a bottle with stem legs. The cork inside has been shaped into a boat.. bobbing in a wine sea. "There. Ship in a bottle." She smiles, setting the once goblet down on the table.

Star Sapphire has posed:
That definitely cuts off a lot of the most obvious worries. Okay then. Carol nods slowly and decides, "Alright. That's going to take a minute to get used to, but I can process it." A lot of people would say that in tones of shock, but from Carol, it sounds more like a resolution. "I understand why you didn't tell me about that, and I'm not angry for it. There are things I haven't told you either because I'm not ready to just yet. Fair's fair." She smiles, a bit wryly but genuinely. "But I do have to ask... and I'm not trying to be hurtful, I just need to know where I stand... was this move part of your need to keep a secret, or did you not think of me waiting for you over the last month?"

Corusca has posed:
This is the part where Miranda gives Carol a confused look. Like, and your point is? Then.. it changes to one of thought. She takes a breath to speak then stops herself. Then starts again. Then.. "Okay, so.. I apologize." She brings a hand up to rub her cheek then stands up to pace the room. "I.. guess I should offer this one then since you know about the magic.." She stops and looks to Carol. "I'm a lot older than I look. A.. few hundred years older than I look." Ahem. "So.. I.. honestly didn't think it was that long." She holds up a hand. "I get it. Now anyway. I haven't been in a relationship for a while so I'd forgotten that.. well.. that time passes.. or at least ones perception of time.. passes differently. It's.. not an excuse. I just.. forgot. I'm sorry."

Star Sapphire has posed:
Carol shakes her head no as she stands up from the couch. She pads over to where Miranda stands, and she takes Miranda's left in her right, very loosely (she still isn't sure the intimacy is there for more than that but still wants to give comfort). "It's okay, Miranda, it's not about you being wrong or me wanting an apology. Though I do appreciate it. It's about what our relationship is, and what you expect from me, and what you're willing to give to me. I had certain assumptions that aren't true, and now we need to talk so we can figure out how we can proceed. Okay?" she asks, keeping eye contact during the whole speech. Whatever happens next, she isn't flinching.

Corusca has posed:
Miranda stands there, her expression still worrisome and uncertain. As Carol comes over and offers comfort, taking her hand, she lifts her chin to look back at Carol who is now looking her in the eye. "Fine but.. now I think I need to ask you why it is you're not freaking out. Why you've never freaked out. Despite how bizarre my lifestyle is or how many times I've surprised you.. I know you're a fighter pilot but.." She apparently seems to think that's not enough. "Aren't you in the least bit worried I'll turn you into a newt if we have a bad argument?"

Star Sapphire has posed:
Carol releases Miranda's hand, but only to turn her own palms up toward the ceiling in a shrug that matches the cock of her eyebrows and the wry pull of her lips. "I know you have miraculous powers and I don't want to undersell that, but... we live in a miraculous world, Miranda. I live in Superman's city, and before I moved here, Green Lantern saved me from aliens a dozen times. Ferris jets were popular targets for warlord-pirates from the antimatter universe, apparently." She chuckles, but returns to seriousness. "I just... have some experience with this. And I suppose there's the worry you'll hurt me or kill me, but statistically? It's men who do that to their girlfriends, not women. You having magic powers isn't much different from you having a gun. Having it is less important than whether you seem likely to use it."

Corusca has posed:
"Even if that gun is capable of leveling a city?" Miranda profers with a raised brow. Maybe she's not sold yet. "Magic is.. a dangerous thing. It's beautiful, powerful.. and dangerous. Much like a genie, the ability to bend reality to your will.. comes with a cost. One that I have done much to diminish over the years." Her lips purse and she's in thought a moment. "And the age thing?" Her eyes lift to look at Carol. "You're okay with dating someone who will most likely watch you age away while herself never changing?"

Corusca has posed:

Star Sapphire has posed:
"I don't know," Carol admits, looking at Miranda calmly. "I've never tried it. But at least conceptually, it's not that much different from any other relationship. Even soulmates who get married and spend their lives together, one of them dies before the other one does. Maybe I'd be lucky to die before you because it means I wouldn't have to live without you."

Corusca has posed:
"And none of this bothers you?" Miranda seems confused now. Her eyes are searching Carol's as if something is amiss. "You're the first person I've been in a relationship with that I've told about my powers and you're.. just.. nothing?" She lifts a hand, gesturing at Carol indiscriminately. "And what about me, hmm? Did it ever occur to you that I didn't /want/ to outlive yet another person I cared for? To have my heart ripped out of my chest again only to wait a hundred years for it to mend enough to try again?" Her pitch is getting a little elevated and she doesn't seem to be aware of it.

Star Sapphire has posed:
Carol opens her mouth to answer about whether she's bothered, but Miranda is already steamrolling ahead with her own concerns, and Carol just shuts up to listen. She nods along and then asks back, quietly and gently, "Miranda... I don't think you're as worried about it as all that, because if you were, you'd be breaking up with me already instead of showing up in a pretty dress, serving me wine. I think you want our relationship to work, and you're adult enough to know the relationship will hurt at some point, sooner or later. And it's okay. I won't be the last person you can ever love." Her lips pull back in a wry smirk. "I mean, I know I'm great, but I'm not -that- special."

Corusca has posed:
Again, Miranda seems to be at a loss for words. Her mouth opens a few times then she closes it finally and stares at Carol. "You... are making this a lot easier than it's supposed to be." She pronounces. "Aren't you supposed to be drunk when you make sense in a fight?" To wit, she picks up the bottle and tops off Carol's wine. After all, she's already put down three glasses. "So what's your secret, hmm? I take it you've been dumped a few times?" Her tone is less aggravated now. More.. genuinely curious.

Star Sapphire has posed:
Carol holds Miranda's eyes for a moment as she smiles. "You took a big risk telling me this," she decides after a long moment of consideration. "That deserves some trust given back to you... but it's not one hundred percent my story to tell, so I need to think about it for a minute, okay?" she asks. "In the meantime, maybe we can sit back down again? I'm going to sit back down again." She walks back to the couch, has a seat, and sips from her wine. "And anyway, I'm not trying to fight you, Miranda. I like you, and I'm invested in you, and I don't want to blow what we might have based on silly pride. I just want to understand."

Corusca has posed:
Miranda seem restless yet. She stands, not quite pacing but not holding still either. She watches Carol go sit then.. relents and goes to sit next to her sitting sideways on the couch. Her glass of wine is presently a ship in a bottle so there's nothing to do with her hands but put them in her lap. That Carol has a story.. well.. it has her intrigued and it shows in her eyes as look Carol over with a curiosity. Her expression is mixed. Naturally, she wants to be patient but the question hangs on her lips.

Star Sapphire has posed:
Carol passes Miranda her wine glass without having to be asked, putting it directly into Miranda's hand lest she mistake the meaning. The brush of hand against hand is what seals it: she has to say SOMEthing, so she relents. "Okay. So, aliens wanting to steal my jets wasn't the only reason Green Lantern ever needed to save me. I also got possessed once by an alien made of psychic energy. It thought it was the embodiment of love, but it wasn't. It was the embodiment of a sick, jealous codependency. Part of the process of kicking it out of my head was learning what love actually is, and that's given me a certain sense of perspective. Authority on the topic, even. I know what love is and what it isn't."

Corusca has posed:
Sure, Miranda is holding the drink but.. she no longer feels compelled to drink it. Instead, she sets it down and reaches for Carol's hand. Her hand is warm to the touch. Always has been. All of those hours spent in the sun getting that golden tan must pay off somehow. "I.. well that explains a few things anyway." She laughs a little, shaking her head. "And given this city and its proclivity for oddity.. I believe you. Which is saying something because I'm suspicious by nature." There's a wry sort of shrug that says she's come to terms with that personality flaw.. msotly.

Star Sapphire has posed:
Carol smiles. "Oh, that wasn't here, that was in Cali," she explains. "Though I'd be lying if I said proximity to Superman after that experience was no factor in my decision to move corporate headquarters to Metropolis. But you're right to be suspicious; I'm not telling you everything. What I'm telling you is true, though, and I'll tell you more when it's safe for the people whose lives it would affect."

Corusca has posed:
Miranda is silent for a time but eventually gives a nod of affirmation. "That's fair. I mean.. we all hve our secrets. I certainly have mine. And.. we've made a bit of a stride tonight even if it wasn't entirely the plan I had in mind." She laughs then. "Of course, I don't know that I had much of a plan beyond surprise you and then.. who knows, right?" Now she does take a sip of the wine then offers Carol her glass back. "Somehow, I think we've ruined the mood again."

Star Sapphire has posed:
Carol smiles and nudges Miranda's knee with her own. "That's okay. I think what we got today was worth more than a mood was anyway."

Corusca has posed:
Miranda Madsen says, "Doctor Doom has a strong sense of purpose but I don't think our egos could survive in the same room without war."
