Cast of Characters: Origami, Abe Sapien

Origami has posed:
Miyako Moore flies across the city aboard a paper airplane like the ones you folded in middle school when the teachers' back was turned, holding up her phone and following Google Maps to track down the first and most obvious idea so far she has for dealing with this... THING that probably shouldn't exist. She touches down in front of the door and steps off, snatching the crumpled folded paper airplane out of the air in a smooth movement as she walks up to the front door with a cheap envelope in her other hand.

She looks in the door, then walks up to what looks like the front desk and wavs. "Hi, I found a.. thing.. that needs to get... mount doomed or whatever. Do you know who I need to talk to?"

Abe Sapien has posed:
The man sitting at the front desk appears to be in his late thirties or early forties, with thin hair combed back over his head.

As the newly arrived woman speaks, he listens with his head cocked slightly to one side. "Ah ..." he begins, then pauses, then clears his throat. "Well. First. Welcome to SHIELD headquarters."

The man smiles. "My name's David. Why don't you describe this 'thing' to me? I want to help you," he adds, raising his hands, palms outward. "I do. But I want to make sure I get you in contact with the right people."

Origami has posed:
Miyako Moore carefully sets a manila envelope on the table. "Me and somebody else found this in a burning building that was made out of brick and concrete. It's some kind of hole, and there is fires on the other side of it. Something alive came out of it - we put it back inside. It feels magical. I don't know what to do about it, though, and I don't want to just start trying things to see what happens.. I thought maybe somebody would know what to do with it?"

She gets some more hand lotion out of her bag and idly rubs it into her hands, casually dropping the crumpled up paper plane in the nearest trash basket.

Abe Sapien has posed:
Looking at the envelope, David raises an eyebrow. "What's in the envelope, precisely? And where did you find it? Who were you with?"

He begins typing on a keyboard attached to a tablet, occasionally touching on-screen menu options. "For posterity, you understand. And for locating the proper personnel to deal with whatever this is. Speaking of which," he continues, "is this item potentially hazardous, perishable, or fragile? You mentioned it has some kind of hole and ... fire? ... inside it."

Origami has posed:
Miyako Moore says, "It is a piece of paper. Woven paper, kind of odd to find in a slum. It has some inking on it, and it looks like a painted hole on it. There is some kind of place that is on fire in it, and it moves. A fireball with eyes came out of it, I assume, then when it landed on the paper again, it fell back in. I don't know if something else might come out, so.."

Abe Sapien has posed:
"Alright..." David says, drawing out the word while tapping a few more menu options. "Paper. Was this inking more like writing or calligraphy, or was it a picture?"

He continues typing something. "'A fireball with eyes'--did this 'come out' of the hole /on/ the paper? Or did it come out /of/ the paper into the room with you?" He coughs and takes a sip of water from a nearby bottle.

Origami has posed:
Miyako Moore says, "I found it in a building fire on the 15300 block of Smiths street, north of Metropolis. A slum. The building was made out of brick and concrete. It shouldn't have been able to burn like it did. It looked like either symbols or writing, but I don't recognize it, in black coal ink. I didn't see it come out, I just know the artifact was the only thing I saw that was out of place. Hmmm. And it went into it when it landed on top of it with the picture face up. The paper felt like a hole. I haven't found enough magic to know much more about it."

She gestures at the envelope. "It's pretty stable right now, you could look at it yourself.. I can take it out if you want, paper can't hurt me.""

Abe Sapien has posed:
"No, no!" David says firmly, reaching out to wave his hand over the envelope without touching it. "There's no need for that. Don't want to cause any other inadvertent effects. Besides, I almost have everything necessary to bring in the right department." He smiles politely and types a bit more.

"Is the building still up? Uh," he adds, "that is--how extensive was the fire? Ever been there before? Why go there at all?" David pauses, waiting for a response. "Last piece of info I'll ask you for, I promise."

Origami has posed:
Miyako Moore considers. "Anyways? That's just an envelope. It wouldn't stop a fire thing from coming out. That's kind of why I'm here.. The building was a total loss, and I was just there at the fire station when the call came in. I fly faster than the fire engines can get there, and they have a lot of abandoned cars in the way of the hydrants in that part of town."

Abe Sapien has posed:
David nods and types. He taps a final button and then smiles again, placing his hands, one over the other, on the desk. "Thanks for the details. I've made sure the right people know, and they'll be out to take possession of the paper shortly."

He gestures toward a set of benches and chairs. "You're more than welcome to take a seat. It might be some ti--"

A nearby wall slides open and two figures in hazmat suits, along with a creature that looks like a bipedal fish-creature, step briskly toward the desk.

"Caught us while these two were already dressed," the fish creature says in a calm, almost lilting voice. "Where is the item? Wait, I see it." The creature points to the envelope and the two hazmat agents very gently lift it with a pair of high-tech tongs and slip the envelope into a thick metal container the size of a suitcase.

Origami has posed:
Miyako Moore crosses her wrists behind her back. "Hi.. Is this the usual way to bring in things like that? Do you have any suggestions how to handle things like this better?"

Abe Sapien has posed:
The fish-creature turns to regard Miyako. "Hm," he says quietly, and then he stands silent for a moment before continuing. "Honestly, the best approach would be to call 911. SHIELD can be alerted almost instantly that way. There is a surprising number of legitimate concerns that might initially be perceived as prank or lunacy."

The creature steps toward Miyako and clasps its hands together behind its back. "Still, this is appreciated. Some very talented minds will study it. You say it is not necessarily dangerous to contact, yes? Miss...?"

Origami has posed:
Miyako Moore says, "Miyako. Origami if you are a reporter, but everybody knows my name anyway. It seemed like the edges were just paper.. I don't know about the middle. Paper can't hurt me, so it was safe for ME, but the parts that don't have a hole in it seem inert, no magic there. And the hole is only on one side of the page. I don't know how things like this are usually handled, yet.."

Abe Sapien has posed:
The creature nods again and looks off in the distance. "I see. I think I see, at least. It's possible that I don't at all, of course." It makes a sound like a sigh. "How long were you in contact with it? You say that paper can't hurt you--I was unsure that it hurt anyone, to be honest."

With a nod toward David at the front desk, the creature continues. "If you're willing, we should collect some sort of contact information for you, in case we might need to speak with you further. This is a preferable alternative to the traditional approach, believe me--you don't want to be a makeshift piece of evidence yourself, waiting for scientists to decide on a course of experimental action."

Origami has posed:
Miyako Moore thinks. "It took me about fifteen minutes to fly here. I have a phone number, and fire departments can usually find where I am if you ask. What kind of things do they need to know?" She rubs her chin in thought with a massively scarred hand.

Abe Sapien has posed:
"Well," the fish-man replies, "in the event of something catastrophic happening, we would want to locate you. It's unlikely you would be the cause of such a thing, since you brought this in as you did, but you might be a target, or you might be effected by whatever else happens, or--well, one of any number of potential scenarios."

The creature approximates a smile, but it might be a grimace. In any case, its fanged teeth flash for a moment. "Of course, it may also be nothing, and this is just a precaution that might never be realized. Leave the discovery of that to those of us best suited for it. Although..." it pauses again. "You did say you flew here?"

Origami has posed:
Miyako Moore nods. "Yes, why? I fly a lot of places, in a paper airplane. Is that.. important?"

Abe Sapien has posed:
"Well, it might be," the fish creature replies, tilting its head back and forth as if in thought. "You /did/ bring in paper that has supernatural qualities. You travel in paper vessels, if I take your statement at face value. For some--," it gestures toward the hazmat crew, "--such phenomena are extraordinary. For others," it says, gesturing to its own chest, "it is an occupational norm. But nonetheless there might be a correlation to attend to."

Origami has posed:
Miyako Moore nods. "I didn't do anything to that paper, and paper likes me. If there's a link, it's not my fault.. Maybe *paper* had something to do with it? I don't know how that would work."

She stops and thinks, idly rubbing a bit more lotion into her hands. "I'm not even sure who I would *ask* about something like that. I'm open to suggestions, though."

Abe Sapien has posed:
"Luckily, I /do/ know people to ask. But they'll need some time for proper research," the fish-man says. "Thus the value of contact information. We will seek you out, though, if it seems useful. So--if you'll pardon the expression--the stronger the 'paper' trail, the better."

David waves again from the front desk. "Happy to help!"

Origami has posed:
Miyako Moore nods, "Okay. Is there anything else you need, um..?" She racks her brain trying to remember if we were introduced, tapping her forehead a bit then gesturing at you vaguely. She winces a bit at the movement. "I don't think I heard what to call you?"

Abe Sapien has posed:
The fish-creature shakes its head. "I think we have everything we need for the moment. If something else comes up, you may hear from us--otherwise, though, I might as well not exist." It attempts to smile-grimace again and points a finger toward Miyako's hand. "But if you need a medic, David can probably help you with that, too."

Behind the creature, the wall slides open again, and the hazmat-suit-wearing agents head back into the corridor there. The fish-man slowly follows suit. "Thank you for your help, miss," he says, looking over his shoulder at Miyako before the wall slides shut to hide him again.

Origami has posed:
Miyako Moore hmms, and shrugs a bit, turning to David. "I guess 'Hey you' is going to have to do, then? You know how to find me if you need me." She slips her hand in her messenger bag and comes out with a square sheet of paper, then walks out toward the door, putting some folds onto the page. "Buhbye, thanks for the help." She waves with one hand, then tosses the paper plane on the ground just outside the door with a *thump* as it grows to a silvery, car-sized thing that she immediately steps onto before it whooshes into the air.
