Isotope's New Clothes
Date of Scene: 29 March 2019
Location: Danger Room - X-men Base
Synopsis: Brian Carerra tests his powers with his new uniform in a Danger Room sim run by Kitty
Cast of Characters: Shadowcat, Isotope

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty heard that Brian had a new uniform special to help with his powers. So she whipped up a Danger Room program just for him. One that would let him walk through each of his different power uses he'd come up with so far.

At present, Kitty is up in the control room, queuing things up. She says into the comm system, "Ok, the safeties are at maximum. So even if something goes wrong, it still shouldn't go... wrong, wrong. You ready? It looks like first up is... oh yes. People shooting at you. Just give me the word when you're ready to have them open fire," she says.

The Danger room transforms, and a street with multiple bad guys dressed in Hydra uniforms hiding behind various barricades appear, each armed with guns of different types.

Isotope has posed:
Brian had been given a bit of a crash course on the suit's functions. From what he was told, the suit would not only channel his energy through the gauntlets, but would also allow Brian to recharge himself in the field.

The student looked up at the control room, and gave a thumbs up to Kitty. "Yeah, let's give it a go." He says, after he makes some fitting adjustments, the silver metal gauntlets were still something he was getting used to. The whole thing looked akin to another member of the X-Men's suit, black with a green circuit pattern of light in the chest and arms. "You know, everyone has like a callsign right?" He says, mostly to himself, but he stands at the ready to answer Kitty if she commented to him. "I think I know what mine is going to be."

Shadowcat has posed:
"Yeah?" Kitty says over the comms. "What is it? You should definitely pick something. Though Logan will still call you 'kid' for the first, you know... four or five... years." Her laughter comes through the comms system just as the bad guys come to life.

"Ok, defensive shield up, here they come!" Kitty says. After a few seconds, a single shot rings out first towards Brian. If that doesn't make it through, more and more shots begin to be fired by the hard light generated Hydra goons. THe caliber of the weapons start to increase as well the longer it goes on.

Isotope has posed:
Brian closes his eyes, holding his fist in front of his face, he concentrates, and his eyes glow a radium green color. "Isotope, Souvenir mentioned to me I look like radium when I use my energy, it kinda stuck." He opens his hand, holding it in front of himself. As his forcefield shows itself and shields Brian from the hard light bullet. The smaller caliber round ricochets off the energy field.

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty's voice comes over the comms rather than the loudspeakers, just like it would in a mission. "Isotope it is then. See if you can withstand their fire first. Once we find your limit, you can move on to firing back," she says.

A Hydra goon pops up, shooting his hand gun. Soon after another jumps up to let go a stream of submachine gun fire, multiple bullets flying towards Isotope. Soon it will be heavy caliber rifles.

After that? It really gets fun.

Isotope has posed:
Brian keeps facing the virtual goon, holding his hand forward as he keeps that shield up. The handgun rounds bounce off easy without much hesitation, but as the constant SMG rounds start, Brian is feeling the strain, at least his shield starts to flash a lighter green with every hit.

It seems the only thing Brian truly needed his hands for in the situation was shielding his eyes. A knee jerk reaction it seems. Once the heavy rifle shots start, even Brian is pushed back from the impacts. Inching back at first, but he keeps it going, he's not taking any physical damage.

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty's voice comes over his comms. "Ok, grenade coming in. Near-miss first. Then another one closer if you hold that one back. Remember this is for finding your limits. They won't harm you if they break through your shield," Kitty says in a reassuring tone.

And shortly thereafter, a grenade gets lobbed by a Hydra goon in back. It bounces off a nearby car, ricocheting sideways so it ends up far enough from Brian that an unprotected person would survive it, though they'd probably have broken eardrums and some disorientation, not to mention cuts and bruises.

Isotope has posed:
"Affirmative." Brian says in a positive way. He just thought it sounded cool and professional.

By this time, the X on his chest has shrunk by half, an underlay even if the suit starts to bombard Brian with UV light, attempting to replenish his energy capacitance.

"Are you trying to..." The frag grenade does it's job, sending shrapnel in all directions, the pieces of hard light metal don't penetrate the shield. But Brian's bell is rung it seems, and with the impacts, his field lowers. His middle ear is affected, and he stumbles a bit. His skin tone is pale, while his body tries to absorb as much UV as possible now. "I think that was it." He says. Even simulated, seems like the energy only stops physical objects, not sound waves.

Shadowcat has posed:
The Danger Room will have lessened the sound wave just before it hit, leaving only a slight ringing in the ears, but nothing lasting more than a few seconds. Just enough so he can tell the effect it could have had.

Kitty says over the comms, after a few moments to give Brian a chance to clear his head, "Ok, sounds like we found a limitation. So, deflecting explosives before they get close can be a priority for you," she tells him.

"Did good though. Just being able to stop those higher caliber bullets is excellent work," Kitty commends him. "Take a breather as long as you need. When you're ready, want to do a little shooting back of your own? The same Hydra goons are out there for target practice for you," she tells him.

Isotope has posed:
Brian does indeed take the moment to catch his breath. His suit does wonders to help him in this regard. "I've not done much" A couple huffs. "With that one."

After a short breather, he seems to have gathered a good amount of energy again. "Okay, I'm ready to dole it out now." He says, ready to rumble.

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty checks the readouts on the monitors. Everything looks good on her end. She tones down the realism of the responses from the Hydra goons for the type of attacks that Brian is readying to launch. Just let him worry about his suit for now, and controlling his powers, and not worry about what the results look like on a human body.

"Ok, you're a go. Open fire when ready," she tells him. "They won't shoot back yet, so you don't have to worry about keeping a shield up. Just focus on your offensive strikes for now," she guides him.

One of the Hydra goons steps out of cover, giving Brian a completely clear shot at him. Others assume different levels of cover to give him practice on accuracy, or if he wishes to try to hit them through any of the barriers they hide behind.

Isotope has posed:
"Okay, conserve energy, short bursts." Talking himself up, and he is off, loosing a short stream of energy, it travels as a wave to the Hydra goon, and hits below the chest, right in the gut. He attempts to shoot one through a wooden crate, which not only is smashed in the same fashion, but there's also a level of burning and light flames around the area. If anything it served to draw that particular goon out, and Brian shoots him much in the same fashion.

More and more, Brian starts to assume a level of activity from the other goons, wether he peruses more and more goons, one hidden behind a car, one big miss and a car that has had much better days at this point.

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty observes the results, the Danger Room scanning the energy blasts being emitted by Brian. The Shi'ar technology calculates the outcomes, setting objects alight or having them react to the impacts of his shots appropriately. Kitty monitors the usual set of indicators, making sure the safeties are engaged and working.

"Nicely done!" she calls as Brian scores a hit on one of the better hidden bad guys. "Alright, some moving targets now," she tells him. A Hydra good darts out, moving from one piece of cover to another. He'll keep going from one to another until hit. A second does the same. But after that, it becomes random, where the next goon will pop up from and run to, as if there's a goon behind every single object out there, requiring Brian to process quickly.

Isotope has posed:
Brian assesses the movement, he has to lead his shots. "Like Missile Command." He muses, watching the added movement. After a miss, he seems to have anticipated correctly and he comes back with another shot, hitting correctly.

The second goon is dispatched more easily, having the same lead time as the other.

Though once the moving becomes random, Brian seems to grow accustomed to just how much he needs to lead, making one more hit, and another miss but followed quickly by a hit. Luckily his energy is quite fast, much like a bullets' speed.

"Mister Summers showed me the old range he used to use. I've spent a lot of time there." He comments, in fact, he's been so worried about hurting others that he'd done the physical equivalent of cramming for an exam.

Shadowcat has posed:
"You're doing fantastic," Kitty tells him as she watches the proceedings on the monitor. She has a scoreboard up keeping score and showing his accuracy, though she doesn't put anything up in the room showing it yet. Doesn't want to distract him while Brian is focusing on the basics.

"Alright, if you're feeling up to it, now we'll start combining defense and offense. You have a squad of Hydra moving in on you. You have to defend your position," Kitty tells Brian as the current simulation resets itself. The layout changes up a bit, the cover in different locations. "If you want to try to moving as well, feel free. Or you can just stay in place and count on your defenses. This will still be a little easier than real life, so you have a chance to test things out. Don't worry about failure, just worry about learning," Kitty says. "Take a breather again and recharge, and then when you're ready," she says.

Isotope has posed:
Brian holds up his index finger, attempting to hold and keep up. "Yeah, I...think I'm gonna get better at it eventually. Be able to go longer."

He wasn't fully charged, but he gives the thumbs up. "Alright. Let's give it a go."

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty Pryde looks down at Brian and says, "Ok, give me just another minute or two to get the room ready." The room is ready to go, she just seems to think a little bit longer of a breather might be good. Kitty goes over to get an iced tea from a little fridge, returning to sit back down. Lockheed flies in, moving to land on her shoulder, Kitty reaching up to give him a scritch where his horns meet his head.

"Ok, here we go. If you need it stopped, just say, 'no mas!'" Kitty jokes. And then the scenario comes to life. Hydra goons popping up to shoot towards Brian. Trying to advance from cover to cover towards him. It starts out easy enough but will escalate, with more troops, better weapons, and better tactics.

Isotope has posed:
As much as Brian didn't admit it, the extra time did much to help. Fully charged, and Brian had smiled. Even if he knew about it, he would have been thankful for the respite.

This time, he uses cover to his advantage as well. When they start heading towards him, he makes for the first goon approaching, letting off a couple shots, missing one but connecting the other. He's careful to use the cover as much as he can. Eventually though he does take a hit to the gut.

He needs to keep cover, and get a bit faster on his shield. Even after taking hits, he keeps going. This of course being his worst category. There were many factors he had to think about at once.

After enough of a drain on his battery, he gives a call out. "No mas!" He says, catching his breath after takings a decent number of hits and depleting his reserves.

Shadowcat has posed:
The room immediately shuts down as Kitty hits the panic button on it. She calls up the score she was keeping, and puts up a display so Brian can see it. A few enormous monitors appear in the air, replaying things from different perspectives so Brian can watch what he did. A remote control appears hovering in the air front of him so he can rewind or fast forward, and change the view as he likes.

Kitty phases through the control room's window up near the ceiling, and slowly descends through the air, stepping down one step after another like there were invisible stairs there that she were walking on. "Really nice job for a first time out," she says as she reaches the ground and phases back to normal space. "How are you feeling?" she asks.

Isotope has posed:
Brian's suit would definitely need a charge after this. He reviewed much of the footage after Kitty shows up. "Exhausted. I really want to be able to do more. But I'm guessing it'll happen in time."

"Overall though, that place is fun!" He offers up, once he's finished with the replays, he is ready to relax a bit, but even then, the results will be looked over, and over again. "Thanks for running this Ms. Pryde." The newest New Mutant had a rough start, but he wasn't dismayed at all. He has a new goal now, and a fire in his eyes to drive him.
