But J'onn J'onzz The Science Guy Doesn't Rhyme
Date of Scene: 19 May 2019
Location: Main Foyer - Xavier's School
Synopsis: J'onn reports as a Xavier's teacher in the guise of John Green, and is met by Ororo, Laura and Kitty.
Cast of Characters: Shadowcat, X-23, Storm, Martian Manhunter

Shadowcat has posed:
After the word that a new science teacher would be arriving, Kitty send around an email seeing if anyone else would be free to join her to greet him. She's hanging out in the area then, waiting until the man's arrival at the gate. He'll be buzzed in for the short trip up the scenic lane to the school itself. From the outside it looks like any other school. No mutants flying around, shooting fire or lasers. Just a very stately looking building.

Kitty sends out the "He's here," message to anyone who replied to her earlier email, and then heads over to the foyer. He is cleared to know about mutants, obviously, if he is to teach her. So Lockheed is riding along on her shoulder, not bothering to have his Image Inducer turned on. The pair wait for the new teacher to arrive at the building, with Kitty opening the door for him when he approaches.

X-23 has posed:
Laura makes her own arrival. She isn't one for social get-togethers, but for her, this is entirely tactical; she has to know who is to be here so she knows who NOT to stab. The girl is in a black tee and skinny jeans, along with black trainers, as she approaches. Seeing Kitty, she changes course to head that way.

Storm has posed:
There's a flutter of cloth and Ororo lands next to Kitty. It's a short hop down from the attic balcony, and she holds the slack of her dress hem in her left hand on the way down. She alights on the ground in her modest, well-worn sandals and an eye-catching maxidress in bold red and white striping, with a subtle, textured girdle wrapped around her midsection. The sleeves conceal her hands when she lands, and Kitty's flashed a smile. "Excited to meet the new faculty?" she asks, eyes dancing merrily.

Martian Manhunter has posed:
J'onn is ready for a new day, for a new experience, or at the very least that's what he's been telling himself while he approached the Xavier's school structure for his first day on the job as a science teacher... A great experience to mingle with humans, with mutants, and keep an eye on things in a discreet way while still being able to intervene and help if needed. For that reason, for now, he is just John Green, a man standing around six feet and a half in height, with the physique of an athlete wrapped in a blue suit, obviously tailored and without a single spec of dust on it. His black hair are short, styled in a professional cut, giving him that serious professorlike look of a cured man who loves order and clean things. His blue eyes, however, are as kind as they could be, and are those eyes right now that stop on the figures waiting for him at the gates, people that he approaches walking calmly, just to stop in front of Kitty, Laura and Ororo, smiling at them and greeting them all with a simple "good day!"

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty Pryde turns to give Laura and Ororo a smile as they join her in the foyer. The smile given Laura might suggest Kitty suspects the young woman's presence is as much about security as anything else. Probably more, at that.

Kitty turns back as the tall figure is seen approaching the building. She opens up the door to greet him, letting John Green walk inside before she says, "You must be John? I'm Kitty Pryde, one of the guidance counselors." Kitty offers her hand for John to shake. "And this is Ororo Munroe, our history teacher. And this is Laura Kinney, one of our stduents," Kitty says, introducing each woman in turn before falling silent.

Storm has posed:
They could do worse than Laura for security. A lot worse. Ororo looks at the younger woman and flashes a grin at her, a dimple appearing in her cheek. "Am I looking at our new head of security?" she murmurs at Laura with a conspiratorial tone.

Ororo stands in place when J'onn's brought over, hands clasped together just below her sternum. As he approaches, she holds a hand out with a relaxed wrist and fingers for him to shake. "Mister Green," she says. "I am pleased to meet you. Dr. Xavier is sorry he could not make it; he's recuperating from an injury. I'm temporarily headmistress while he's incapacitated, though I'm sharing the load with Scott Summers and Dr. Grey. You'll meet them later," she assures him. "How was the trip up from-- Metropolis, was it?"

X-23 has posed:
Laura is actually not used to hearing a "full name" for her. She's only just gotten used to hearing "Laura". So Kitty gets an eyebrow raise as she uses it. But then, once she's introducing him, all her attention goes to John. A thorough visual inspection, and she checks his scent as well, learning who this person is that's allowed.

Martian Manhunter has posed:
J'onn aims a smile at Kitty, shaking her hand, and then Ororo's, offering then a polite nod at Laura "John Green indeed, here to do my part for the scientific world, and to teach students why drinking NH3 is generally considered a bad idea."
He looks, in all details, exactly like a human. His scent is that of a human, or at the very least his skin smells of human skin. Those able to discern it, however, would probably notice that even if he smells like a human, it would be a human that doesn't sweat, nor carry on himself the various scents of previously visited places. Almost as if he just, started existing a couple of minutes ago, if that could be used as a definition.

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty Pryde smiles as the introductions are made. "We've just let out for the summer, so there are a few months to get your bearings, lesson plans together for the coming year, etc," Kitty tells John. "We have a staff meeting each week during the summer, usually on Tuesdays. Most of the staff live here full time though so we're always sort of working together," she says. "We have a room set up for you upstairs in the staff wing, as well."

Kitty motions towards an alcove where they can talk more privately, away from student ears. Well, from students who don't have the kind of hearing that Laura has. Such students kind of get treated differently and talked to about what things they overheard, like John's identity, are not to be passed on.

"Would you like to have a seat and a cup of tea with us? If you have any questions about the school we can try to answer them," she offers, glancing over to Ororo to see if this works for the administrator.

X-23 has posed:
Laura moves along with the others. As she does, she'll stick close to Kitty, though. Her voice is very soft, as she asks "You are certain this is the person you are expecting?" Her tone pitched as quiet as possible, especially towards John, as she moves along.

Storm has posed:
Ororo smiles to herself as Kitty takes charge. It's an endearing quality change-- Kitty maturing into the confident leader of mutants that she's meant to be. Someday the official staff photo will have Kitty in the Headmistress' chair, for sure. So Ororo just stays in easy step with the other two, projecting an air of calm assuance and utter support for Kitty's assertions.

She flickers a glance at J'onn when Laura speaks, and gives the other woman a quick look. Laura's paranoid, but paranoid in reason. She glances at J'onn's back as he ducks into the room after Kitty and Ororo reaches a hand to Laura, getting her attention without touching the woman. "<Something amiss?>" she asks in quiet, urbane French. Her head tilts to the door after a beat. "<Be our eyes,>" she murmurs, and then the two women enter the room.

"Tea would be lovely, Kitty," Ororo agrees, and finds a chair to sit in. She hooks one ankle behind the other and rests her clasped palms on her thigh, back straight and proper. "Mister Green, tell me about yourself," she invites. "We are... one large family here. People grow very close. I know Scott Summers handled much of the paperwork ,so forgive me for asking tired old questions."

Martian Manhunter has posed:
J'onn follows Kitty in the alcove, and even pretends not to notice Laura's whispering or Ororo's answer to her, limiting himself to calmly take a seat, and smile "tea would be lovely, thank you..."
The questions get asked, of course, and having tailored the identity as perfectly as possible, J'onn has the answers almost ready. "I'm just, a regular person, nothing special..." that is to say his identity is tailored to make it seem like he's a sort of genius, with several degrees achieved before reaching his thirties. "I'm not from, these parts, but most of my degrees took place in the US... Like the one in medicine at the John Opkins, physics and biology..." After all, that's where he telepathically absorbed all the knowledge about human sciences, anyways...

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty Pryde walks beside Laura as the other woman speaks to her quietly. Kitty nods her head back to Laura and says just as softly, "He is a little different than most people. But Scott and Jean are aware of the details," Kitty says. She'll wait for them to decide whether to let all of the X-men and New Mutants know about the new teacher's true identity. Though Kitty herself will have advocated for it, and for reasons just such as Laura noticing when things are unusual.

The hot water for the tea is there already, Kitty setting the tea bags to steeping after they all take a seat. "How did you come to apply to our school for the position?" she asks John, not having heard the details of how he originally came into contact with them.

X-23 has posed:
Laura looks over, curious as Ororo employs French to speak to her. <His scent is off. There is...not enough of it. Too new. Manufactured.> She nods once Kitty tells her that Scott and Jean are aware. If NewMom says it's okay, then it's okay. Jean so far is the one person who gets that free pass with her. She looks back, listening. "It is a pleasure to meet you." she offers, formally.

Storm has posed:
"I'm curious as well," Ororo adds, on the end of Kitty's words. She waits until John and Laura have been offered tea; then she accepts the third cup, being most senior. The last cup is left for Kitty as hostess, as is proper. Ororo rests her teacup and saucer on her knee for balance, holding both with an effortless and long-practiced ease. "We're very particular about who we employ," I mean," Ororo clarifies. She sips her tea and pushes her plaits back behind her ear so the fine braids arc up over her close-shaved temples and spill over a shoulder in a glass waterfall of white.

Martian Manhunter has posed:
J'onn leans a bit backwards on his chair, accepting the cup of tea with his left hand, so that he can actually use the right one to take it from the saucer and drink it. "well lets say that working here is, something that is mutually beneficial for me and the school... Namely, it affords me the possibility to interact with you all, giving in return my protection should it be needed... And an unparalleled level of scientific knowledge, of course!" he smiles slightly, of course he can't yet reveal his complete identity without having talked about it with the headmaster, but he can still drop a hint here and there just in case! "however, I can ensure you, that I am not a menace, miss..." and this last part was aimed at Laura, with a smile following his words, that happened to be in french as well.

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty Pryde nods slowly as she listens. "I understand you have a very high level of science knowledge," Kitty says. She adds a small amount of milk to the Earl Grey tea, stirring it before taking a small sip. "And you are aware of the nature of our student body. That the people here are mutants. I gather that isn't an issue for you?" Kitty asks.

"And I am curious if you have any thoughts on the events going out in the world that affect the student body here. The spread of the Sentinels. And I'm not sure if you heard, but our founder, Charles Xavier, was shot yesterday during a talk about mutant rights. He is ok. Made it through surgery and is recovering," Kitty says, in case John Green hadn't heard the news.

X-23 has posed:
Laura looks over, and answers with her actual name. At least as far as she's concerned. "X-23. Since you are an instructor, you may call me Laura. I have a wide range of practical scientific knowledge already. But I will attempt to learn the more theoretical." She switches back to English, more as a matter of trust than anything. She takes the tea, and sips from it. Surprisingly good with her etiquette there.

Storm has posed:
Ororo makes a face at Kitty when she adulterates her tea, but it's tempered with a teasing grin. Ororo's drinking some damn authentic stuff, from the smell of it. "Please do not feel that we are interrogating you, Mr. Green," Ororo hastens to add. "We're just excited to meet a new staff member. We hire new blood very infrequently, it's been the same core group of six of us or so for most of a decade now."

Martian Manhunter has posed:
J'onn chuckles now, smiling again at Ororo "don't worry, I don't feel interrogated... Your concern is perfectly, justified anyways." then turns towards Kitty "I wasn't aware of the details, in the last couple of days I've been, not nearby..." he admits "I am however glad mister Xavier is alive and hope he'll recover as quickly as possible... Feel free to let, well, your superiors know I am available to offer whatever assistance I can" where for her superiors he probably means those who know about his true identity... "And, about my thoughts on your situation... Well, as long as the wole planet doesn't just stop treating you as different, in the bad meaning of the term, you will never be an unite civilization. And, sooner or later, things will get nasty for you all."

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty spots the look from Ororo. She flashes her a gentle grin. That Kitty is drinking the tea is probably a win. It was not that many years ago that Mountain Dew and cereal were her main staples. But not any longer.

No, Kitty doesn't drink Mountain Dew anymore. The cereal though? Every day.

She crosses one leg over the other and laces her fingers over her knee as she nods slightly at the mention of the different treatment. "Yes, we don't want you to feel examined," Kitty agrees with Ororo. "Some of the students have encountered a lot of prejudice in their lives. We try to offer viewpoints of mutants and humans living together in peace. We think it's the best way forward. But it's easy for people to turn antagonistic themselves when confronted by the kind of events going on today. While you may not be an ethics teacher, it's still the kind of topic that can come up in our classrooms. Even science ones. Discussions about science and mutants and our mutations, are not uncommon to encounter in our classes."

X-23 has posed:
"This seems like a discussion that would be better served among teachers. As I am not one, I will leave the issue to your discussion. I imagine there are things you would not wish students to hear in any case." With that, and with her tea finished, Laura sets the cup down and stands.

Storm has posed:
"I'll pass on your well wishes," Ororo says in those culture alto notes. When Laura rises she gives the girl a quizzical look with one lifted brow, and a hand moves in a neutral gesture to get her attention. "You're welcome to stay, Laura," she tells the younger woman diplomatically. "Your insight is very welcome. You'll be taking science classes from Mr. Green, assuming all goes well for him in the next few days." Her eyes dance at the fellow, teasing him just a little over her teacup. "But if you have something urgent to attend to, you're of course welcome to sit with him another time." Ever the diplomatic, Ororo, giving Laura an 'out' if the younger woman sincerely *needs* to get clear.

Martian Manhunter has posed:
"I understand that, yes..." J'onn replies at Kitty "and, well, sciences and you are indeed very, linked... So I think I'll just prepare to answer all the student's questions about my thoughts on mutants as well as on the proper way to analyze bacteria..." bringing the cup of tea to his lips, he takes a sip of tea, enjoying it or, at least, that's what his expression suggests right now. "oh, Laura, you are of course free to stay. I am not discussing the answers to the final tests, anyways"

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty Pryde looks over to X-23 and gives her a soft smile. "It's not a bad thing to sit in on, anyway. We tend to be a bit informal around the school. Meeting a new employee for a job, people will show a little more formality. Politeness. Working their way slowly into more sensitive topics. Not a bad conversation to soak in, really," Kitty suggests. But her smile and shrug at the end are enough to make it clear it's Laura's option.

Kitty tells John Green, "Many of our students stay around here over the summer. I think it's something like two-thirds stay on campus. So you will have a good opportunity to get to know them before school starts. We have some old motorcycles in the garage that the students, and even faculty, are restoring as summer projects. You could certainly help out there if you'd like. I'm working on 1965 Vespa scooter, myself," she says with a smile.

X-23 has posed:
Laura listens. "I will stay. I simply have nothing further to contribute to the conversation." She's not very good at being social yet. But she moves to sit down, and will listen, if nothing else. She pours herself another cup of tea. She is a fan of tea.

Storm has posed:
"We'll talk about it later," Ororo murmurs to Laura as quietly as she can. She flashes another reassuring smile at the woman, just to let the petite berserker know she's still on safe social footing.

"Not that STEM isn't important," Ororo says, after Kitty makes her bid. "We also dabble in Home Skills, horticulture, the arts, and even music. There are usually at least one or two attempst a year to start a musical band, though it doens't usually last through the summer session."

"Tell me, Mr. Green--" Ororo shifts to get comfortable, and crosses her legs at the knee. "Do you have any experience working with 'exceptional' children? Beyond just 'gifted and talented', I mean."

Martian Manhunter has posed:
J'onn smiles and tilts his head "well I fear my mechanical skills are" he seems to look for the right words "ok, I know how to work around mechanical things, even if I usually don't do that too often. But I'll see where I can be of help!" he smiles, but there's just no way he'll be covered in motor oil... "oh? Why no music bands last through the summer? Is it, that difficult to throw some people together that know how to play instruments?" he asks then, raising an eyebrow and then taking a generous sip of tea, with his cup now only half full. At Ororo's question he just looks at her "what do you mean, exactly?"

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty Pryde smiles as Laura decides to stick around longer. The young woman looks back to John, and motions to the purple dragon that is perched no her shoulder, politely listening to the conversation. A likely rarity for the Martian, his telepathy doesn't seem to work on the dragon, with no thoughts being noticeable from Lockheed. Kitty says, "Well, students who have more than just intelligence and creativity at their disposal. That's what most normal schools would consider gifted. Our gifted students can fly, breathe fire, teleport, reshape earth and stone..." Kitty says, trailing off after a few examples.

X-23 has posed:
Well, that's a surprise. Laura wasn't sure they were letting the cat out of that particular bag. But it's entirely possible that Scott, Jean, or the Professor already have. She decides to be the one to give the demonstration; Ororo's powers are bad for indoor demonstrations, and well, Kitty looks the same whether she's solid or phased. Laura keeps the teacup in her right hand, but extends the left arm out straight, makes a fist, and...*SNIKT*. Out pop the two adamantium claws, little blood trails down her fist from the bases.

Storm has posed:
Ororo is trying to clarify something when Laura makes the... point, for them. She lifts a hand immediately and puts it into the air, not trying to stop Laura but at least putting herself in the way of the woman so J'onn doesn't read it as a 'threat'.

"Laura," Ororo says, in a tone of gentle reprimand. "It makes guests uncomfortable when you flash your blades at them."

She glances at Kitty, then looks back to J'onn. "Perhaps we were a little un-clear," she hedges, and purses her full lips. "The entirety of our residents-- and staff-- are mutants and metahumans," Ororo tells J'onn. "You will find yourself not just teaching science, but putting out literal fires and helping children navigate through an adolescence where overwhelmingly potent gifts are being thrust into their hands. It takes a.... steady disposition," she admits. "We've had a few teachers leave due to the pressure over the years. It's more than mere instruction it's.... mentorship."

Martian Manhunter has posed:
J'onn nods at Kitty, understanding her point, then smiles at Laura! "oh, those are nice!" he admits, then just releases his hold on the cup of tea, using just a bit of telekinesis to have it float in place "while I have never been formally recognized as a teacher before I am, not new to the mentoring process either... And, well, I suppose I could deal with, literal fires, and children navigating through an adolescence where overwelmingly potent gifts are put in their hands, to quote your words, miss..." speaking of course to Ororo, with that last sentence. Making the cup of tea float to his lips so to take another sip and then having it float to a nearby table, as it is now empty, he just alternates his gaze between the three people in the room with him. "I hope I'll be able to fulfill my duties not only in the science department..."

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty Pryde suddenly clues in that Ororo and Laura don't realize J'onn's identity. "Oh... you just got back, you probably didn't even get to the new staff information," Kitty says to Ororo. "Ah... John here is a member of the Justice League, actually, is my understanding," she says. "So he was considered well-versed in the kind of unique situations we have with the school," Kitty explains further.

"I think the biggest concern we had is for the safety of the school. We have our own enemies who may target the place. And we want to be careful to not add to that list. Thus the concern that your involvement here be kept a secret. Just another human teacher as far as even our own students that are not part of our hero teams are concerned," Kitty says. She smiles to John. "Which, I'm sure we can trust you in that regard to do your utmost."

X-23 has posed:
Laura looks a little confused at Ororo's statement. "This would be a horrible tactical position." But, she doesn't want to make anyone uncomfortable, so she snaps the blades back in, and idly rubs at the little blood spots, dabbing them off with her thumb, and licking it off.

Storm has posed:
"It's still a question of manners," Ororo reminds Laura delicately.

She listens to Kitty's clarification, and her white brows lift towards her mohawked scalp. "Oh. Oh!" Ororo laughs, and her entire demenaour warms by about ten degrees towards J'onn. "I knew you had some metahuman talents, but I was trying to be discreet. No wonder Scott and Charles spoke so highly of you," she says. "Of course, anyone from the Justice League will be a good fit for us."

She sets her tea aside and rises smoothly. "I must take my leave. With regrets," she tells the others with that regal urbanity. "But I have a botany class to teach and then I have to figure out where the children are trying to hide the hemp plants this year." She rolls her eyes eloquently and offers a hand to J'onn to shaek. "A pleasure to meet you, Mister Green. I look forward to working with you if all pans out."
