Date of Scene: 29 May 2019
Location: New York - The Triskelion - R&D Laboratory
Synopsis: Sibilance meets with FitzSimmons about the possibility of joining the SHIELD R&D department. Which....involves an impromptu interview and surprises from both sides.
Cast of Characters: Jemma Simmons, Sibilance

Jemma Simmons has posed:
The Research and Development lab at the Trisk certainly looks like it can handle a lot of scientists at once. It is certainly large and well-stocked. And currently devoid of everyone, except for two. This...seems to be a usual occurence, especially considering the two currently occupying the lab.

The two co-heads of R&D. FitzSimmons. The combined team of Jemma Simmons and Leopold Fitz.

At present, it appears that the two are working on separate tasks. Jemma is peering into a microscope, while she has a tablet open that, to those of a medical background, shows what appears to be a DNA marker comparison. Leo, for his part, is working relatively close by, fabricating another smaller ICER pistol. It seems that word got out about the special PPK model he created for a certain Agent Carter, and so another request came in for one. One...that Fitz seems to be relatively okay with, for the moment.

"Ya know, Jemma...I hope dis doesn't become a regular thing. Not dat I mind makin' these, yeah? It's just dat people think they can start ta special order stuff now." Fitz glances over to Simmons, eyeing the tablet. "Dat's the DNA test for Carter?"

Jemma chooses to answer the question first. "Yes, Fitz. The two charts show her DNA markers. One is from the sample Medical obtained when she, hmm, first arrived here. The other is a sample from before." 'Before' isn't defined...but both know that Jemma means in the past, before the documented disappearance. "Apart from genetic degradation simply because of the age of the sample, the two are identical. It is definitely the same Margaret Carter. I didn't have to adjust for the cellular decomposition to be certain of that." She offers Fitz a wry little smile. "Of course, I adjusted anyways. You know, we can never be too careful."

The two continue to converse, but the lab door is open, inviting any to come on in. It just seems that most might be a little intimidated by the pair of scientists. Or bored with science.

Sibilance has posed:
Sibilance hasn't ever been in the Research and Development section of the Triskelion. When she arrives, she does so with trepidation. Her standard-issue black boots thump against the floor, the stuffy black uniform she's wearing ironed and pressed to impeccable appearance. It obviously had to be custom-tailored, because she's short -- not even five feet tall -- and she's got a tail. She moves up to the lab where Simmons and Fitz are discussing their scientific priorities, largely unaware of the topics they're on about.

She enters and approaches, and stands at a respectable distance. She feels a bit small around all of this lab equipment, moreso around the two scientists who have far more formal education than she has had. She has a nervous frown on her face, showing off how expressive her facial features can be, while she waits for a gap in the conversation.

"Hello," she speaks up, fighting the feeling of her voice cracking. Ahem. "I'm the Agent-in-Training, Ainsley Garcia. Director May said there would be some kind of... aptitude test? For my skills with plants." She shyly smiles and fiddles with the trainee access card hanging off the lanyard around her neck. She idly plays with the laminated card and looks off toward Fitz.

If either of them read AiT Garcia's file, they'd know the woman's had zero formal education.

Jemma Simmons has posed:
The footfalls of boots upon floor is not enough for Fitz and Simmons to be alerted to the new recruit's entrance. However, when AiT Garcia speaks up, that certainly garners both of their attentions. Leo glances over briefly, only to be surprised to the point where he drops a screwdriver in his right hand. It garners a fierce red blush upon his cheeks as he fumbles for both his tool...and for words. "Hmm...err...hello?"

Jemma, however, is more graceful in her response. "Why, hello Agent Garcia!" She walks away from her station, offering a hand in greeting. "Director May had made mention of your botany knowledge and stated that you might be coming by." The tablet is slid from the table into Jemma's hand, tucked under the arm. "She also mentioned that you was possibly considering joining the research and development department, which prompted the mention of the aptitude test, yes?"

If the file was read, there is no mention of the lack of a formal education, for the moment.

Sibilance has posed:
Sibil smiles sympathetically toward Fitz, his fumbling startle quite normal for her. People aren't used to seeing her, and she's still new here. She knows he isn't afraid of her, at least, not the way less savory types would be. She nods to him, just to make it clear she's friendly. The proffered hand is noticed in this moment. Jemma's ease of greeting is very surprising for Sibil, who spends a half-second too long looking at the hand. She grasps it -- heavens, she's a bit chill to the touch. Properly cold-blooded, then?

"Si, that's correct," she answers, with a warmer smile. It helps melt away her awkwardness. "I'm still trying to find my place here. My recruitment was very atypical, so it's taking some time. It would be wonderful if I could work here in this department." She leans in and conspiratorially adds, "Even get my own labcoat." Grin! Heavens, those are not normal teeth for a human OR a snake.

Jemma Simmons has posed:
That British politeness comes into play as Jemma doesn't make mention of the hesitation, nor the coolness of the hand as Sibil grasps Jemma's own. Instead, Jemma's other hand reaches over, sandwiching Sibil's between the two. "The labcoats are a plus, aren't they?" The comment came out in a slightly conspiratorial tone, as if it was a big secret being shared between the three of them. Then, that smile of Jemma's, bright and cheerful, crosses over her features as she finally releases Sibil's hand. "And we can certainly understand trying to find your niche. Fitz and I tend to still look for where we can be useful. Of course, his idea is that we are most useful in the lab, while I see that field work could broaden our horizons."

A glance is cast over to Fitz, who waves off the attempt to rile him with a wave of his screwdriver. "I keep tellin' ya, Jemma. I like bein' safe. And dis is the safest place I know."

Jemma shakes her head at the engineer. "Safety is overrated. One can never innovate without taking some risks." However, before the two start down a road that seems rather well-travelled, judging from the banter, Jemma returns her attention to Sibil. "In all honestly, Agent Garcia, there really isn't a formal test or anything of the sort. Consider it more of an interview of sorts. The fact that you are interested in the department at all is certainly a plus." There is a pause, as the tablet slides out from the arm. Jemma closes the test results with a swipe of the fingers and opens Sibil's file with another. "Of course, if you wanted a more formal examination, we could certainly provide that. However, we find that is a little intimidating for most. Wouldn't you agree, Fitz?"

There is a nod from Fitz as he turns back to his puzzle that is the ICER pistol. "Right." Then, with a grin, he nods to Jemma, while addressing Sibil. "Yer gonna wanna be on her good side, though. She does all da bio stuff. Right solid taskmaster, dat one."

The smirk from Jemma, followed by the oh-so-innocent smile from Fitz betrays the fact that the two are teasing each other again. "Nevermind him. He just thinks he is being funny."

Sibilance has posed:
Sibil seems quite pleased with how friendly Jemma is. The enthusiasm is infectious. Fitz gets a glance now and then, but since he seems to be busy she doesn't engage him directly, only acknowledging he's even there when Jemma draws the conversation back over to him.

"Whatever you say, Taskmaster Simmons," Sibilance jokes, attempting to make light of the situation, since they are joking at each other. It's fun to be included.

"I guess that means you'll end up being my... supervisor?" She handwobbles and tilts her head, searching Jemma's expression for her feelings. "I can take the formal exam later if the interview is faster."

What Jemma would know from the file is that Ainsley is a Mexican national. There's some information there about the plants she had brought into her quarters -- practically a whole greenhouse's worth, actually.

"Well... ask away?" she spreads her arms openly, waiting to get grilled.

Jemma Simmons has posed:
"He's technically right. I would handle the biological research. So, I suppose you are right." It does seem a somewhat novel concept to Jemma, judging from her reaction. Or, more like she doesn't really see herself as a supervisor type, even though she totally is. "Oh, the interview is much faster. Primarily because I haven't fabricated a botany-specific examination as of the present time." Now it is Jemma's turn to blush as she shrugs. "I don't think that May would mind if we skipped the exam. And, if not, then it can be our little secret."

Eyes flicker down to scroll through the file, though what exactly Jemma is looking at is not spoken. However, she does seem to stop at the description of the quarters...in particular the details as to the extent of the plants within. "You seem to have quite a knack for plants. Just how many species do you think you have within your quarters?" Of course, it may state the specific number in the file, but it would seem that Jemma is performing the time-honoured tradition of fact-checking. Even if it is SHIELD's own files.

Sibilance has posed:
Sibilance commits Jemma's face to memory, because she'd be the Boss Lady if this goes well. She smiles patiently, not really in the place to judge someone for not having a test ready when it isn't their job to be an instructor. The snake lady waits for the questions to come in, but the first one is about the plants in her quarters. It's her turn to blush. She thinks on that, rubbing her chin. "About... seventy five, if you count the handful of hybrids that don't have an official name," she says, and adds, "I had to leave all of the common flora, and that tree I was growing up there..." she animatedly lists off on her fingers. Her previous residence WAS a rooftop greenhouse, there are photos in her file. Inside it looked like a jungle. She had only been living there for a year. This was in Gotham, of all places.

"I couldn't bring any of the more fragile ones, either, the trip would've killed them anyways," she says, with a sad frown.

Jemma Simmons has posed:
There is a blink of surprise as Jemma shifts her attention from the tablet in her hand to Sibil directly. "Wait. You have seventy five different species in your quarters?" That...certainly was not notated on the report. Seems that the hybrids were not mentioned, among other things. "And your quarters is typical SHIELD issue...." That isn't a question, but a statement. Fingers pull up a calculator app, as the room dimensions of an average quarters is used to figure the square footage of plant life. "And...you was able to grow these specimens within a year...in a temperate climate...without any formal training or specialized equipment."

The tablet is placed down as Jemma shakes her head in minor disbelief. "I have to admit, I am impressed. That is no easy feat. And...you say you have hybrids that seemingly whoever compiled this report could not name specifically. That alone speaks to your skill." Then...another question is offered. "What role would you want to see yourself in within SHIELD? I mean, it is not everyday that a botanist decides they want to join."

Sibilance has posed:
"Well... I did need lights for my quarters for some of them, but those were cheap enough..." Sibil sheepishly says, rubbing one of her forearms. Her quarters are stuffed to the brim with all manner of exotic plants, so it's pretty clear the snake woman is very obsessed with her botany. There may not be a whole lot of room for much of anything besides her bed.

"My intent is to become a field agent, in time," she replies, "As a Mutant, I've a number of inherent advantages... Well, obviously, I won't be doing anything like going undercover." Even police detectives go undercover, not hard to think SHIELD agents do the same. She just stands out too much for that. She awkwardly lifts her hand to rub over her face when she thinks about how she looks. "I just want to help, really. If that means working here under you, then that's what I want to do. I admit I hadn't even thought about it until Director May pointed me this way." Botany is clearly a passion for her, not something she sees as work.

Jemma Simmons has posed:
"Oh, I am sure we can find a way to combine a field agent with your skill with botany, along with any other interests that you may have." Jemma does seem rather sincere in that regard. "And you are correct, you would have a unique skillset you would bring to whatever role you desired. I think that if you put in half of the devotion into your field work as you do for botany, you will certainly succeed in stunning fashion." Jemma takes a moment to pause from praise as she shifts her glance back to Fitz, who is just finishing up assembling the pistol. "What do you think, Fitz? You are co-head, same as I am. Think we could find something for Agent Garcia to do?"

With that, Leo shifts, placing the ICER aside as he gives his full attention to Sibil. "Ya got Jemma gushing. She only does dat if she's really excited. If ya wanna be here, ya got my vote." Then, just to top it all off, he gives a thumbs-up and one of his lopsided grins. "And...I wouldn't put goin' undercover out of da picture just yet. We...we got some tricks we might be able ta do ta help with dat."

Jemma nods in return to Fitz's assessment. "Oh yes. Nothing is impossible around here." She turns to face Sibil fully, that big smile back on her face. "I would be honoured to have you in the R&D department, should that be your wish. It is possible that Director May has other plans, so it would be a good idea to check back in with her with your decision. She might also have ideas as to who would be good to be your Senior Officer. You know, to be a mentor and all." It is apparent that Jemma has a different idea as to what a SO is in relation to new agents than most. "I would certainly inform her of our review and approval, to speed things along for you."

Sibilance has posed:
Sibilance flashes a smile as Jemma shows how excited she is. The snake lady clearly seems quite happy to see that, eyes practically sparkling. Fitz gives his own approval as well, and that makes Sibil clasp her hands together, perk her tail, and give a positively girlish wiggle of excitement of her own. "I was worried I wouldn't make the cut!" she admits, "Oh, that's a relief. Thank you." She then breathes a big sigh and lowers her hands down to her sides.

"Thank you very much," she says to both of them. "I think I'd love to work under both of you." She doesn't have an officially assigned /direct/ SO. Technically that may end up being Jemma, if Sibil's assigned to R and D.

"Sounds like that's everything, then. I'll get back to my other training. See you later!" She lifts her hand, and merrily departs, a pep in her step.

Yeah, today is a good day.
