Of Vampires and Werewolves
Date of Scene: 22 June 2019
Location: Two Bridges (Chinatown), Manhattan
Synopsis: Daniel talks to Frank about vampires and werewolves. Daniel gets a steak dinner instead of a mental health arrest.
Cast of Characters: Frank Quaid, Daniel Osborn

Frank Quaid has posed:
Frank is sitting at his desk with his suit jacket hung over the back of his chair. His office is on one of the floors occupied by the Counterterrorism Joint-Task Force and Special Crimes Unit investigative teams. The back wall of his office has shelves loaded with books and reference manuals. The wall on one side has a bunch of signed pictures of Frank with various superheroes. The other wall has a bunch of service pictures of officers from his teams who had died on-duty.

The office itself is big enough for Frank's desk with chairs for guests, and a small round table with three chairs around. He is typing away on his computer.

In the NYPD lobby there is a detective waiting to meet Daniel if he goes up to the counter and identifies himself. She is tall, athletic, middle-aged, with brown hair in an unremarkable pant suit. If Daniel does check in, she introduces herself as Detective-Sergeant Elaina Bever from Special Crimes Unit and offers to take Daniel up to see Frank and tries to make polite chitchat on the way.

Daniel Osborn has posed:
Oz does indeed introduce himself at the counter, and he's more than willing to respond to light chitchat on the way up to Frank's office. He may be silent most of the time, but he gets his talking in when he wants. He's certainly not the dark, imposing kind of silent either, he's more easy going and chill, but he does seem a bit more serious than usual today. After all, when he saw that social media post describing someone who looked exactly like someone he had met, he knew he wanted to help the police out if he could.

Frank Quaid has posed:
When Elaina and Oz come out of the elevator, they are a large open floor. Cubicles with chest high partitions are everywhere. It looks like there are some conference and other rooms down one way. And there are people everywhere, along with a constant buzz of talking, phones ringing, swearing and laughing. Elaina smiles a bit and leads the way to Frank's office. The door is open, though the blinds are drawn over the full height window beside it.

Frank looks up looking tired at first. He has a bandage on his nose and two black eyes. When he notices it's Elaina he smiles, gets up and comes around his desk. He holds out a hand to Oz.

"You must be Mr. Osborn," he says. "Frank Quaid. Thanks for coming in today. Coffee?" he offers and gestures towards the small table. If Oz comes in, Elaina shuts the door and joins them.

Daniel Osborn has posed:
Oz shakes Frank's hand. "yes sir, please just call me Oz," he says. When he mentions coffee he nods. "Oh, yes, thanks." He does, indeed come in. "You look terrible," he says, to Frank, pointing out the bandaged nose and black eyes. "That have anything to do with the information you were looking for?" He offers a smile, but he does look slightly concerned.

Frank Quaid has posed:
Frank walks over to the coffee machine on a low side table against the wall with the superhero pictures. He pours Oz a coffee and asks what he wants in it, then brings it back to Oz and sits down.

"Thanks," Frank says dryly about how he looks. Elaina laughs. "It does, actually. Apparently these people are really hard to arrest."

Daniel Osborn has posed:
Oz takes the coffee greatfully and takes a sip. "Tell me what you know," he says, "I might just know a bit more. If it's the person I'm almost 100 percent sure it is, you're not gonna arrest her, and it might be better to give up while you still have a life." He says this completely humorlessly, completely serious, it's clear he's fairly certain Frank would actually die if he kept up with certain people. He takes a seat as well, taking another sip of coffee.

Frank Quaid has posed:
Frank makes a 'huh' kind of face and shares a glance with Elaina. Elaina gives a slight shrug. The two always have a bet going about whether people with info for Special Crimes Unit are cranks. There are a lot of cranks.

"Well, we don't really know anything," Frank says and smiles. "That's why were so glad you called. We know there are people with really big teeth," he points to his incisors. "And some metas that look a lot like dog people. We don't know much else."

Daniel Osborn has posed:
"Dog people?" Oz asks. "Please tell me you have pictures. There is a LOT you don't know about this world, I'm afraid." He takes another sip of his coffee, then looks between the 2, partially in thought. However, he does seem to be genuinely worried for their sake, messing with the supernatural is very dangerous after all.

Frank Quaid has posed:
"Nothing we can give out right now," Elaina says apologetically. "They're part of an investigation. But these guys were... over six feet tall, mostly tawny or darker fur. They had scrawny looking arms and legs, but they moved really fast and were pretty strong. We figure they're mutants, but we don't usually see groups of mutants with the same mutation."

Frank nods and watches Oz curiously.

Daniel Osborn has posed:
"I don't believe those were mutants," Oz says, simply. "Tell me, you 2, what do you know about the supernatural? Vampires, werewolves, demons, the like? Everyone knows metas and mutants exist, but what of the things I've mentioned?"

Frank Quaid has posed:
"Ah," Frank says cautiously. "There's the Scarlet Witch? And lots of people say they believe in witches and demons and things. But it's not something we... run into. Are you saying they're real?"

Elaina keeps a very neutral face, not wanting to offend.

Daniel Osborn has posed:
"I am a werewolf," Oz says, simply, as if that was enough confirmation, which, it is. "And I'm not the only one. If I had the pictures I could tell you for sure, but I think what you ran into were werewolves. And the woman you're looking for, from the social media post, her name is Selene. She's a vampire, I've met her personally. She doesn't attack humans, if she did myself and a group of friends of mine would be after her, but she does kill a type of werewolf known for having little to no humanity, and regularly killing innocent humans, which is perhaps the type you ran into. Can you tell me exactly what happened?"

Frank Quaid has posed:
Frank cocks his head and looks Oz up and down. Elaina pushes her chair back just slightly. Frank does, too. Their bodies tense perceptibly and if Oz has heightened sense, he can probably see the pupils dilate slightly and the quiver of pulse in their necks pick up.

"You're a werewolf?" Frank asks incredulously. "That's... Don't take this the wrong way, but you don't look like one. That's a big claim to make. Why should we believe you?"

Daniel Osborn has posed:
"Because I can smell your fear," He says, simply. "You're afraid of me. That's a natural reaction. But I'm not going to hurt you. I could transform, but I promise, you don't want to see me do that. I went to Tibet for half a year to learn how to not transform, because i have a desire to keep my humanity. When I transform, I lose that humanity, I become nothing more than a ferral wolf. It's not something I like, but it's something I have to live with."

Frank Quaid has posed:
"Right," Frank says, politely. The tension in both Frank and Elaina drops immediately when Oz gives a reason for not transforming. Elaina is fighting a small smile.

Frank pulls out his cellphone and makes a face at it.

"Well, I really appreciate you coming in, and not transforming on us," he says to Oz looking back up. "Looks like I've gotta run though. Maybe you could type something up and email it to me?" he says. He gets up and grabs a card off his desk and holds it out to Oz. Elaina gets up as well.

Daniel Osborn has posed:
Oz takes the card and stands. "One more thing, before I go," he says. "If I were you, I wouldn't go after Selene. I said she's a vampire, and that's true. You send your best humans out there they're gonna get killed. She's much faster, stronger than any human, and she's 3 times as old as the oldest of you, easily. Possibly older, I don't know. She has experience. If I were you, I'd drop the case on her, because I promise, you're fighting a battle you will not win. And I would hate to see any of you get killed. She's not a bad guy, nothing like The Joker or anything like that."

Frank Quaid has posed:
Frank runs his tongue along the inside of his lip while he considers Oz.

"Have a seat," he says and moves to sit down again. "You know Selene?"

Frank looks to Elaina and she nods. She sits down.

"Alright, well messing around with Selene is a bad idea, I'll give you that. Can you describe her to me?"

Daniel Osborn has posed:
Oz sits back down and nods slightly, the gears turning in his mind. He describes Selene, and the description matches. "She's wearing black leather, has a trenchcoat, that sound like her? And remember her teeth, notice they're fants, that'll tell you everything you need to know about her."

Frank Quaid has posed:
Frank nods, and looks satisfied, but also wary again. There

"Sorry about that," he says. "We deal with a /lot/ of cranks. Mostly cranks."

He starts tapping away on his phone. "Selene broke my nose, by the way. I trying to arrest her."

Frank hands his phone over to Daniel. "Swipe through them," Frank says.

The pictures are all lit with that horrible over-exposure of crime scene photos everywhere. The scene was in an alleyway, and there is a lot of blood. There are Lycan corpses and it looks like they had been fighting someone or something. There are also piles of ash near some of the corpses. A couple of the piles of ash were spread out, like someone stepped through them. None of the ash piles actually have crime scene markers unlike every other possible piece of evidence. It is clear the officers had no idea they were significant.

Daniel Osborn has posed:
Oz looks at the pictures, going through them with intense eyes. "Werewolves for sure," he says, "Few vampires as well. Selene did this?" he asks, thoughtfully. "Well, that's a few less vampires that I don't have to deal with, fortunately." He takes his time, examining the photos carefully. "The corpses are all werewolves, like I thought, the ash piles I can tell you didn't think were significant, those are dead vampires. Vampires turn to ash or dust when killed, they don't leave bodies behind."

Frank Quaid has posed:
"What?" Frank asks with a frown. Both of Elaina's eyebrows go up. "They actually crumble to dust?"

Elaina looks at Frank. "You know those weird calls we've had over the years..."

Frank nods. "Never a body. Damn," he breathes with distant eyes and shake of the head. He refocuses on Daniel.

"I don't know if Selene did that," Frank pulls his chair over closer to Daniel and he points at where the corpses are with the vampire dust in an overall shot of the scene. "She said she didn't. But these," he points to Lycan corpses further up the alley. "These were hers and someone else's kills. They came charging into the alley right after Elaina and I showed up."

Daniel Osborn has posed:
Oz looks at the photo again, contemplating. "I can guess what happened," he says. "If these aren't Selene's, then the vampires and werewolves here got into a clash. The vampires killed some of the werewolves, but the werewolves ultimately finished the vampires off. The ones up here are the remaining werewolves that Selene and her partner killed when they arrived. This is quite a mess," he says. "I wonder if those vampires were trying to protect humans or not, and if they were, it's very much a shame that the werewolves got to them. But Selene did stop them, which is good. But I'm only guessing at what might've happened, I can't say for sure."

Frank Quaid has posed:
Frank shakes his head. Elaina shoots him a warning look but he ignores it.

"I think those vampires were from Europe," Frank says. "Do vampires and werewolves fight a lot? Would you and Selene get into it if you ran into each other?"

Daniel Osborn has posed:
"It depends on the type of vampire and the type of werewolf," Oz responds. "She hunts a type of werewolf known as the corvinous werewolf, from Europe, and they're a bad type. Apparently they're the kind that really don't have any humanity, that kill humans. I'm different than they are, and when I met Selene, we did not get into it. She's...something else, but she's specific about who she'll actually kill. She won't attack anyone who doesn't make the first move except for the corvinous wolves, which are bad news for everybody. I promise, she's not after any humans or friends of humans."

Frank Quaid has posed:
"Huh, okay. Are all vampires like her? Or do we have some.... Secret society of vampires running around drinking peoples' blood?" Frank asks.

"Were you born a werewolf?" Elaina asks. "If that's not too personal. Or did something happen?"

Daniel has the full and complete attention of the two officers.

Daniel Osborn has posed:
"There's vampires that drink human blood, yes," Oz says. "There's vampire slayers out there meant to stop those vampires, one of my best friends is one of them." He considers Eleina when she asks her question, and holds up a finger. "My cousin Jordy," he says. "Does not like to be tickled. Learned that the hard way a few years ago. Been a werewolf ever since."

Frank Quaid has posed:
Elaina's face softens a bit. "Wow... I'm not sure what to say."

"Can I run some things by you, to see if they make sense? I got given a bunch of information about vampires and werewolves, but I don't know how much of it is true," Frank says. He gets up and goes to a filing cabinet. He unlocks it and pulls out a file folder, then sits down beside Daniel and puts it on the table. It would really help to know if this stuff is for real.

Daniel Osborn has posed:
Oz nods. "Of course," he says. He looks at the file folder. "Is this the stuff?" he asks, opening it and starting to look through the files within, hoping he' not digging through top secret code word classified material or something.

Frank Quaid has posed:
"That's it," Frank nods. He goes and gets himself a coffee and tops up Oz's while Oz reads through the folder. He takes a seat and waits patiently. There is a knock at the door and a younger looking woman with glasses pokes her head in, but Frank waves her off and she shuts the door again.

Daniel Osborn has posed:
"Oh, I see," Oz says, thoughtfully, reading through the folder. "Some of it's true. But most vampires, and werewolves, can look completely human, with no obvious ways to tell them apart. Most of these ways to kill them are pretty accurate, holy water, staking, and the like for vampires, silver, wolfsbane, which is also the name of one of the X-men, by the way, those are good ways to stop and kill werewolves. Actually, do you have anything made of silver here? If there's anything that will prove I'm a werewolf, it's that, and I don't mind too much. Yeah, most of this is true."

Frank Quaid has posed:
"It's alright, we believe you," Elaina says.

Frank nods in agreement.

"Yeah, you don't need to hurt yourself," he agrees. He tucks away the bit about the X-Men in the back of his mind. "Honestly, this is a huge help. Here's the real question though. I mean, we're talking with you, you seem like a good guy. Let's say some guy like you transforms. You said something about losing your humanity, so he's out of control, right? How do we get him under control without killing him? I don't like the idea of killing people because of a... What would you call it? Medical condition? Curse? Mutation?"

His concern seems to be genuine and Elaina is neither surprised nor in disagreement.

Daniel Osborn has posed:
"Curse," Oz says, simply. "Being a werewolf or a vampire, that is a curse. And I'm not saying it because it sucks, it is a genuine curse. The best way to get me to transform back is to knock me out. A hard enough hit, if you can hit my head, will do it, or a heavy, heavy doce of tranquilizer. That may not work for every kind of werewolf, of course, but it'll work for me, and it'll work for many others, always worth a try."

Frank Quaid has posed:
"I'm really sorry," Elaina says. "Thank you for even talking with us about this. It can't be easy. But hopefully it will help us save some lives."

"Hmm," Frank agrees. "What do you do, by the way?" Frank asks.

Daniel Osborn has posed:
"You're welcome," Oz says, "we've tried to keep the supernatural a secret, but it's getting to the point where perhaps that isn't within the best interest of the humans we try to save from those who aren't on the side of good, if you get what I mean." He offers a genuine smile. "This may sound silly given all I've told you, but I'm a guitarist for this band." He gestures to the shirt he's wearing, a Dingoes Ate My Baby band t-shirt.

Frank Quaid has posed:
Frank smiles. "Nah, not silly at all. That's cool. And thanks for what you do. It must be working because we don't hear much about it."

Daniel Osborn has posed:
Oz nods, closing the file in front of him. "Of course, it's what we do. It's a dangerous world, a whole different world than the one you know, I promise you, but just remember that not all vampires, not all werewolves are evil. Not even all demons are bad, and another one of my cloests friends is a witch. Magic is very real, remember that too."

Frank Quaid has posed:
Frank exhales and shares a look with Elaina. She shakes her head, still processing all of it.

"Magic... Who do we talk to about that?" Frank asks. "And can we call you, if something comes up and we have questions?"

Daniel Osborn has posed:
"Of course you can call me," Oz says, with a nod. "If you have something for me to write on I can write down my phone number for you. For magic...I'm not sure I could recommend anyone who'd be willing to talk to you about it, but one of the most famous musicians in the world grew up and went to the same high school as I did, though I don't know her well. Willow is a witch, one of my best friends, there's a few other magical people in the world."

Frank Quaid has posed:
Frank goes and gets a pad of paper and pen from his desk, and hands them over to Oz, along with a few extra cards. "Well, you run across anyone who'd be willing to educate us, please ask them to call me. Just get them to say you told them to call so I know they're serious," he jokes.

Daniel Osborn has posed:
Oz laughs a little and nods, quickly writing down his phone number on the pad and collecting the cards into a neat stack. "Thanks, I'll keep these handy. So, do you have anymore questions for me? I'm sure you must have a lot, please feel free to ask."

Frank Quaid has posed:
"Hey, if you've got the time, we've got /lots/ of questions. Tell you what, what do you like to eat? We'll take you out on us," Frank says. "Least we can do for you."

Daniel Osborn has posed:
Oz looks a little surprised, but smiles. "Wasn't planning anything for this afternoon. I'm not picky, pick a place, I'll eat anything. Just no vegetarian places, which of course means no vegan places." he smirks slightly. Just because Willow's vegetarian does not mean he is, or ever will be.

Frank Quaid has posed:
They both laugh as they get up. "No vegan, not a problem. City's paying, so how about Mo's? You want a good steak, Mo's."

"He goes there every chance he gets," Elaina smirks. "But it is good. Come on, I'll drive."

Daniel Osborn has posed:
"Steak sounds lovely," Oz says, standing up. "If I get steak everytime I give the cops information, maybe I should do it more often." he can't help but smirk, but hey, if everyone's in a good mood, then it's definitely a good way to get off on the right foot with the people who try their best to uphold the law and keep the streets safe.
