Sitting in the kitchen with Shannon
Date of Scene: 16 August 2019
Location: Kitchen - Xavier's School
Synopsis: Sam and Shannon talk about life
Cast of Characters: Nightingale, Cannonball

Nightingale has posed:
With the new oven installed and safely in place, strength training that will at least benefit others in the school as well begins in earnest. The dull, rhythmic thudding of dough hitting a hard, floured surface, along with lilting humming in perfect time with the kneading, can be heard from the kitchen entryway. It should be no surprise that the culprit is the resident winged healer/baker, Shannon, who is in her white t-shirt, favorite jeans and sneakers, and has her hair tied up. She's also got a dusting of flour all over her as she kneads a fairly sizeable batch of bread dough, but who cares!

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie looks over and seeing her with flour on her nose he will smirk, and ask "So, what type of bread are you making today?" He smiles and says "So, this the first loaves for the new over or did ya sneak in last night to get some done?" Joking

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon's cheeks go a little rosy, but she smiles, chuckling lightly and trying to wipe the flour off her nose. No such luck. With her hands covered in the stuff, she not only winds up spreading more flour on her nose, but gets some on the rest of her face as well. "Oatmeal buttermilk bread today. Didn't sneak in last night but it was tempting! Not exactly going to be any good out there dead on my feet."

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie nods and says "Ya you have to make sure you set your time right and get what you want to done with training, school, and such if your not watching it your time disappears on you.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods, smiling some and letting herself go silent to simply enjoy the company for a moment. "Okay then how will I work out the training part of it? Classes haven't started yet, so that's not a problem at the moment." She works at kneading the dough for a little while longer, till the small, slightly worn, kitchen timer next to her in the shape of a teacup lets loose with a shrill ringing for about five seconds. "And how do I even criticize someone else's performance, when I hate talking bad about anybody to begin with?"

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie look to her, and says "Cause you care about them, and want to make sure they live. You can tell someone Oh you did fine, oh your great, and then in a real fight they get hurt, or you see somewhere they can improve, you tell them and then they aint got that weakness in a real fight."

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods slowly. "Guess even a healer has to cause hurt sometimes, and prevent a worse outcome in the end." She sighs softly, hanging her head. "I sure didn't do Surge any favors, then. That won't be happening again." She puts the dough in a large bowl to rise, covering it with a cloth and setting it in a warm spot near the stove.

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie says, "But Ah will give you a bit of a hint, when your telling them something they need to improve on it is always good to sprinkle a little bot of what they did well on. Sour and sweet together."

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods again, and frowns. "Then... as much as I hate saying anything bad about Josh... he's been a real nice person, and one hell of a mentor... I wish he would have done that on our critiques. It was all sour, no sweet." She climbs up on a stool and perches herself there, shrugging a little. "I know, just doing his job and keeping us alive out there, but still... maybe that's a hint he could take from you, too."

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie says, "Well everyone has their style, he has probably picked it up a bit more from Scott. Scott is strict straight laced. He was taught by Professor Xavier and one of his first students. The New mutants and Ah, we had a more diverse style since we were taught by multiple people."

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods. "Yeah maybe so, but there's benefits to your approach. Okay, it's good to know what you did wrong and what you could do better on. But if you did something right, it helps to know that, too, so you can figure out what works and what doesn't." She shrugs and smiles a little bit. "I was toying around with the idea of asking Scott how he would have handled Spawn, actually... thanks for the heads up, I'll know not to expect any sweet from him."

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie says, "Well he aint usually an ass, but he most times will shoot straight, might find him trying to be a bit nicer when your new, and that's not saying he is a jerk, least not most of the time. He is experienced and a damn fine tactician. You would be hard pressed to find many better,""

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods. "Only talked to him once so far but he was pretty nice. Very no-nonsense, don't think he'd take crap or give it. Seemed the type to give an honest answer to an honest question. And from what you're saying, it might actually not be a bad idea to ask him anyways." She shrugs a little bit, her brows furrowing in confusion. "What I don't get is why some of the other kids put him down so hard."

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie looks to her, and says "He is the disciplinarian. He is the one who expects the best out of himself, and the best out of you. He is going to press you for it, and when your being a slack ass he will call you on it. And if you do something he can make a lesson out of he will.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon shrugs. "Doesn't sound like a jackass or 'dorkface' to me. Just sounds like someone who gives a damn." She sighs a little, running be-floured hands through her hair, a touch exasperated. "That's what was so frustrating about the reviews after training. I wasn't expecting or even hoping for a 'oh hey, you did great' or someone to blow smoke up my tailpipe. But knowing exactly what I did right and -why-, as well what was wrong, would really help."

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie nods his head, a bit to that, and says "Well Ah will always try to be honest with you, and if Ah think your screwing up, will tell you, if Ah think you did well, I will tell you. And If you want me to look over your training sessions Ah will, and pretty sure Scott would as well.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods. "I might ask him to do that. There's a lot I could've done better but it was also going in completely raw with zero combat training at all. Ever. Thumb wrestling doesn't count." She can't help laughing some at the last one, just shaking her head. "Kind of silly to ask you to look over the last one. You were there for most of it, I guess?"

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie says, "About half of it, and yes there will be times when some of us might be watching and you may never know. Also we can also look over recordings. he smiles at her, and says "Now here is something else you may want to think about. How much do you actually want to be in the field?"

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon frowns a little bit, tilting her head as she considers this. "If you'd have asked me that a few days ago, I'd have looked at you like you had two heads." Wrapping her arms around her knees, she rests her chin atop them, her wings only half-wrapped around her as she seems to be a bit lost in thought.

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie looks at her, and says "Ok, you know the Warren we keep telling you about? For years, he did the hero thing with his only powers being he had wings and could fly with them. His fighting styles, and such even if he aint around is a good thing to study for flyers, and you in particular.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods. "So it's not really a shortcoming, if my healing isn't quite the same as Josh's. There's still a lot I can do out there." She sighs a little bit. "I'm not under some delusion that it's going to be a bed of roses. Roses have thorns anyways. Just..." Her gaze unfocuses as she thinks over the past few days, going over recent events in her mind. "...it was weird. I should have been scared shitless on that field trip, but I wasn't. Maybe I should've ignored Josh that time and just run out of there with the others instead of helping Peter... but I couldn't. The only frustrating thing was that I couldn't do a damn thing more. But if I'd tried to... that would have put the rest of you in danger at that point, worse than you already were, because you'd be trying to protect me instead of covering your own collective asses. Still... it was just -right- being out there. I can't ignore that."

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie says, "Well, when your part of the team, we do watch out for one another but we also expect one another to do the best we can. There is stress there when your out there, it is not just you, your all working together and if you screw up you, your team will try to cover for you and will most times, but you will feel like crud, and it will happen more than once, you don't walk without falling at times."

Nightingale has posed:
"And the strangest part is, I can actually see that happening for me." Shannon slides off the stool and saunters over to the fridge, peeking in to see what there were for drinks. Jackpot--root beer! "Want anything to drink while I'm over here?"

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie says, "Grab me a glass of ice tea please." He will ask her. "Ah was real bad about blaming myself, and thinking Ah was not getting better at the same pace the others were. Just do not give up and keep on trying thats the best advice Ah can give ya Shannon."

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods and grabs a pitcher of iced tea, bumping the fridge door closed with a little swish of her hip. "Sure thing... you want that sweetened or no?" She smiles and nods, a little bit rosy in the cheeks but a lot more calm and relaxed than she was a little while ago. "Thanks, really. You sure you're not the angel here?"

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie chuckles a bit and says "That is warren's code name, and unsweatened tea is blasphemy " He grins at her, and says "Between Rogue, Remmy and myself we pretty much always have sweetened tea in the fridge." He says smiling at her.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon laughs softly at that, with a grin of her own and a bit of a twinkle in her eye. "Good man. Now you're speaking my language." She puts the can of root beer back in the fridge, instead getting two glasses and pouring out some iced tea, stirring a healthy (or not so healthy) helping of sugar into both. "Yeah, I heard about his codename first day I got here. Pretty much got told to get any thoughts of using it out of my head. Which was fine by me, anyways."

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie looks to her, and stops her before she can put sugar in it, and says "Taste it, Ah make it sweet. You add the sugar while it is hot that way you don't get the gritty texture." He will smile at her "With ice tea you have to use a syrup or honey if your adding sweetner when it is cold.

Nightingale has posed:
"Well, heck." She rolls her eyes and chuckles, and shrugs. "If that's the worst thing I mess up on today, it's still a good day." For Sam, she gets a third glass and pours out some more iced tea, hunting down some honey. It does take a little searching, but she comes out with the ubiquitous little bear-shaped bottle and grins. "Okay, just how sweet do you like it?"

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie smiles and says "It is good already, trust me." He smiles "I put enough sugar in it when I made it." He tells her He will stand and get the third glass, and take a long sip. "Have to teach you the whole southern sweet tea game." He grins at her

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon tries a sip of the glasses she poured previously and wrinkles her nose. Both promptly get poured down the drain, and the glasses washed out. She chuckles, and blushes a bit. "Yeah, definitely got a few things to learn there. Also, that fried chicken recipe you were making the day I met you."

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie offers her a sip from his glass it is sweet but not like soda sweet. "Ah am sure there are some things you can teach me as well. If Paige is coming up Ah will have her get ma to write some of the recipes Ah don't know down.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon tries a cautious sip of the tea--and as it turns out, Sam very nearly shares himself out of the glass! "Oh now that is seriously good stuff." She smiles, but raises her eyebrows at him. "What could I possibly teach you?"

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie hmms and says "Well the only bread I can make is biscuits, corn bread, and whole cake, so the whole loaf bread is a bit beyond me, but also never know what else ya might find that you can teach me.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon drops her jaw, looking a bit shocked and surprised at Sam. "Okay, I can definitely see we've got some things to teach each other. I can't make a decent cornbread to save my life, and the only biscuits I ever made successfully were sourdough ones that I've long since lost the recipe for. Oh god, I couldn't have been much more than nine or ten when I tried to make those."

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie smiles and says "Ah was about that age when I first made biscuits, I made a horrible mess of ma's kitchen, had dough on the doornob, think Ah had it on the celing but they came out pretty well tasting.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon stifles a giggle behind her hand, her eyes twinkling. "Oh god, that must've been priceless! Hey, at least some of them made it -in- you rather than -on- you... and on everything else in the kitchen!"

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie grins and nods at her "I can do a bit more, but we will get you learned how to make them. Whole cake is the real easy one

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods, and thinks for a moment. "Don't think I've heard of a 'whole cake'. Wonder what that's like?" She smiles to herself for a moment, ducking her head. "Don't suppose red velvet cake is one of the ones you know, is it?"

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie says, "Sorta like a giant biscuit, basicly flour water, maybe a little bit of lard or the like put it in a pan and bake it."

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods. "Sounds like that could lend itself well as a base to other things if you got creative with it. Do you eat it plain like that, or how do you serve it when it's done?"

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie smiles and says "Planes often with a big pot of pintos, basicly an alternate to corn bread

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon grins, clapping her hands together with a twinkle of almost childlike, innocent glee in her cornflower blue eyes. "We'll need some help eating all that food, you know. Maybe we'll have to call in some reinforcements from around the school, make a day of it. What do you think?" Blushing a bit, she properly hugs the stuffings out of him, her melancholy and irritation long since gone, simple, pure joy in its place.
