Red velvet
Date of Scene: 17 August 2019
Location: Kitchen - Xavier's School
Synopsis: Baking a treat for Sam. Shannon and Sam talk about life, food, music, and their kin.
Cast of Characters: Nightingale, Cannonball

Nightingale has posed:
With the batch of bread from earlier long out of the oven, the resident winged healer/baker of the school seems to have taken on a new project. Something a bit more relaxing, though no less challenging in its way for its novelty to her. Shannon looks like something of a mad scientist as she drops a bit of red food coloring into a bowl of batter, hoping that she gets this right--and that she wouldn't be found out before she had a chance to finish. However, with the kitchen as much of a hotbed of social gatherings as it seemed to be, would she be that lucky?

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie does come in but has not noticed what she is making yet. He walks over towards the sink, to wash his hands, he has been out on the garden and has a basket with some veggie. Hey you ever had a mater sandwich?"

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon whirls around with the bowl cradled in her left arm, and now a spoon in her right as she's caught stirring the dye into the contents of the bowl. She looks like a kid who got their hand caught in the cookie jar, but smiles as innocently as she can. "Actually, that sounds great. Ever just pick a tomato off the vine when it's been sitting in the sun all day, and just eat it like an apple?"

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie nods, and says "Oh yea ma, used to have to make sure we did not take all the salt shakers out to the garden." He chuckles, and says "Making some more bread? The loaf ya made earlier ready to cut?"

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods and points to the cooling rack out on the counter; the tangy smell of oatmeal buttermilk bread is redolent in the air. "Should be, even still just warm enough to really enjoy." She turns a little red and grins sheepishly, holding up the bowl. "I was trying something new... red velvet cake."

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie smiles and says "Oh really?" He will ask grinning at her. He will get the bread and cut pieces to make himself and her both a sandwich or two, after washing off one of the larger tomatoes. He move to pull the mayo out of the fridge "Dibs on the spoon."

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon laughs and gets him a wooden spoon, trying to balance it on the tip of her finger. It lasts for about five seconds, before the spoon goes clattering to the ground. She plops the bowl down on the counter and swoops down to scoop up the spoon from the floor. "Five second rule!" She grins right back at him, holding out the spoon. "You told me it was your favorite at the pool party."

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie smiles and says "Yes, did not know if you would remember it." He grins over at her, and says "We are going to have to work on the whole balance thing aint we." He teases as he starts making the sandwich "Salt and pepper?"

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon chuckles and shrugs, her wings ruffling in an echo of the gesture. "Yeah, looks like it. Goofball." She laughs, turning to get the bowl, and pour out the banner into two parchment-lined pans. "Ohhh yeah, just a little sprinkle of both. I hate messing with the flavor of a good tomato too much."

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie nods and makes both a lot of pepper on his "Mater is one of the few things I like black pepper specificly on." He reaches to get a bit or the batter out of the bowle that is left.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon rolls her eyes and laughs, nudging the bowl over towards Sam with one wing. "You look like a little kid, doing that." As soon as the cake pans are in the oven, she takes a break from her cookery, to nibble on the nice, fresh tomato sandwich. "Ohh yeah, now this is good stuff! Simple pleasures are the best ones!"

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie smiles licking his finger clean and says "Rest for dessert. " He starts to munch his sandwich. "Might have to take ya to meet the family some time, tell mom got a friend wants to learn all about southern cooking."

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon grins. "That'd be a blast. Bet we could learn a lot from each other. Just don't tell them how badly I messed up sweet iced tea, they'd draw and quarter me." She giggles and munches on her sandwich a bit. "Mmmm, might have to try a few different kinds of bread with this, see which one's the best. Think sourdough would work?"

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie hmms and nods his head and says "Might be, or a rye, might be interesting. Never tried it but a pumpernickle might as well." He moves to find a seat with hsi sandwich and batter bowl.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon wrinkles her nose at the mention of rye, getting a distinct stankface look. "Oh god... rye. No seeds though, right? I hate it with the seeds, tastes really bad."

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie says, "I always figured might be better with the seeds ground with the flour. Don't mind the taste in general but biting into a seed not so much.""

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon shivers a little bit. "Caraway seeds are just... ugh. Dunno... maybe it'd work if they were ground up instead." She makes quick work of her sandwich and hops off the stool, getting the ingredients together for the cream cheese frosting, referring back to a printout she has on the counter. "How'd the batter taste? Did I get it right, or does it need work?"

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie hmms and says "Tastes pretty good, might be a little light in color but tastes good still." He offers her a grin "Then there is another type of bread you can make but I aint sure I would wan to try it.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods, and grins. "I'll have to work on that, then. It'll require quality control, of course." She tries to keep her tone perfectly deadpan, but winds up laughing. "Oooo... what kind of bread?" It felt good to just relax and enjoy the company, with at least one shared interest. As she's mixing up the frosting, insisting on doing everything by hand, she tilts her head slightly. "Curious, what kind of music do you like?"

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie smiles a bit and says "Cricket bread." He teases her a bit watching her reaction, and says "I like a bit of all types, Lila Cheney of course, and then there is some metal, and an occasional odd thing "Ever heard of Steve ?n? Seagulls?

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods, and grins. "Yeah, that one actually sounds kind of familiar. Didn't they do a cover of 'Thunderstruck' on banjos or something? That was a pretty good one." She scoops up a bit of the frosting from the bowl and dabs it on the end of his nose, giggling.

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie nods, and says "I a partial to Aces High, but yea they did that and some others. I listen to a little bit of everything though to be honest. Part of what got me messing with the club.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon chuckles as the bit of frosting just sits there on the end of his nose, setting the bowl aside. "Kind of wary of clubs after the Hellfire. Yeah, not one of my prouder moments... well, alright, it was the fastest I ever came up with a costume for something."

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie chuckles, and will wipe his nose off, and says "Evolution is a dance/music club. Hellfire club is a totally different type of club.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods, and tilts her head. "So... somewhere I could sort of slip into and get away with it?" Fingers crossed, she smiles innocently. Innocent? As if.

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie says, "Ah run the club, and it is more an all age club, so Ah think you would be ok, and alot of the school is going to come by when Dazzler plays, and now Mason is talking about doing some sets there also."

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods and smiles, tilting her head. "He's pretty good. Ran into him not long after I got here. Really very talented on the piano." She shakes her head and laughs a little bit. "Wish I was half that good."

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie nods his head a bit to this and says "Will have to get you to play for me sometime. I aint never had alot of talent singing or playing an instrument really. Josh was the one who was good at that.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods. "My folks managed to make it up here earlier this week to drop off my electric piano and a few other things from home. Plus there's always the music room, too. Flag me down sometime when you want to hear something. I've got a pretty eclectic taste in music, but you'll catch me playing movie soundtrack pieces, some classical, some showtunes, a bit of Elton John..."

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie nods his head a bit to this and says "Oh wish Ah had gotten to meet them, They a bit more reassured when they got up here and found you happy, and the rest of us not total craze balls?

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods, and smiles. "Yeah, coming up here was kind of a Hail Mary pass. Finally got to see them stop worrying so much." She sighs a little bit. "Kind of sucks I may not be going back home anytime soon, if ever. Not the most mutant-friendly area. If I thought I could convince them to move to this area I would."

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie hmms and says "Some have thought about it, but if not still might be able to compromise and them and you move close but a few towns away.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon shrugs. "It's just a thought, anyways. Dad would have to sell his business and they'd have to uproot themselves. You expect to have to move out sometime, just... you still miss them sometimes."

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie nods his head a bit and says "Ah was 16 when Ah come up here trust me Ah understand. And I got a sneaking feeling that your dad might be able to have his business anywhere. I don't think his business is tied to a location.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon rolls her eyes and laughs. "Yeah, you could say he has job security. Let's just hope none of us meet him on a professional basis." The timer on the oven goes off and she gets a mitt to pull the cake pans out to cool on a rack. "Even if they did move up here... I'm starting to get used to being here. It'd just be nice knowing they won't get bothered for having me."

Cannonball has posed:
Samuel Guthrie says, "Well, Ah have a sneaking feeling they never consider you a bother, and even if they do not move up will probably either find a place to meet you half way for visits or come up and see ya. We have had to deal with enough undertakers hoping not again for a while, no offence."

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods, and chuckles lightly. "No, now you just have to deal with the undertaker's daughter." She blushes a little bit and gives him a hug, smiling. "We'll have to figure out when we want to put all those good eats together... and keep Zap away from the oven." The last is said in a teasing tone, and she smiles, going to finish up the cake. "I'll put this aside for you, okay?"
