She Heard It Through The Grapevine....
Date of Scene: 14 September 2019
Location: Rec Room - Xavier's School
Synopsis: Shannon and Mr. Green discuss worries, fears, and ways to deal constructively with both.
Cast of Characters: Nightingale, Martian Manhunter

Nightingale has posed:
The night before hadn't gone so badly--for the most part. Shannon had been on hand to help welcome a new student, and found that often, the simplest ways were the best to help bring a smile to their face. But the student grapevine grew strong at Xavier's, and rumors were flying fast and furious. They were enough to give her pause and, instead of going for a morning flight out by the lake, she was inside, here in the rec room, studying. She was curled up on one of her favorite beanbag chairs, with what appeared to be a math textbook in her lap. And no oreos in sight!

Martian Manhunter has posed:
J'onn is pausing, and that means, that he is autorized to do nothing for at least an hour after his earliest classes. An explosion in the lab is everything his students will talk about for a couple of days, especially since in theory John Green's right hand is supposed to have a quite nasty burn that is not there at all, considering he regenerated as soon as out of class. The teacher, dressed in his usual tailored suit, is right now closing the door of the rec room, sweeping the area with his eyes that set on Shannon almost immediately as he starts to walk in her direction.
"Shannon, Good day!" he greets her

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon looks up and smiles, teasing Mr. Green. "Good morning! Bit of an explosive class, wasn't it?" She closes her textbook, giving up on studying for the moment, and gets up to go join him. If it was a mere burn on his right hand, maybe it was something she could help with? "Nobody will ever call science dull again, I bet!"

Martian Manhunter has posed:
J'onn chuckles as soon as he hears Shannon's words, pulling out a chair and sitting on it, his hands, perfectly rebuilt, on his knees "oh but science is never boring, even when you don't blow up things!" he exclaims entusiastically "but yes, surely, now, those kids will think those classes rock, or whatever's the term that they use now aday." he grins, peering out of a nearby window for a couple of seconds "well, how have you been lately, Shannon?" he asks then, refocusing his eyes on the woman

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon takes a good look at Mr. Green's hands and raises her eyebrows; for an explosion like that, how had he healed so quickly? She'd heard of some mutants who could heal fast, with Logan being one of them. But this was faster than she'd expected. There's other concern bubbling just below the surface of her thoughts; she was learning to try and guard her thoughts around Mr. Green, as the last few times they'd met, he somehow had figured out what was on her mind without her saying a word. "No, rocks would be geology. And no, science is definitely not dull." She cracks a bit of a smile. "Heck, just in the kitchen alone, there's more science than most people realize. When I was back in Connecticut and my folks were homeschooling me, they'd often use cooking as science lessons as well."

Martian Manhunter has posed:
J'onn sits quietly, listening, both Shannon's words, and, probably, the superficial thoughts, without going any deeper for now. "hm, yes, well, there's science in everything. In whatever you do, in whatever everyone does, there's science. When we move, there's the physics of our bodies interacting with the surroundings, the biology that causes the movement itself, so many factors that just thinking about what's needed for me to do this" he raises his right hand, running his fingers through his hair "would be enough to write a book... Maybe two books..."

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon chuckles a little bit, though the worry continues to bubble just under the surface, perhaps manifested in the almost imperceptible furrowing of her brows. "Don't think most people are going to think -that- much about it. But it -is- fun to kind of look beneath the surface of things, and find out what makes them tick. Why we can move... why certain things work in cooking the way they do and why others don't... it just helps us appreciate this little blue gem in space we call home."

Martian Manhunter has posed:
J'onn is the one to raise an eyebrow now, peering at the woman "why, the same sciences apply both here and on other planets... I mean, some parameters can be different, such as air composition, gravity and whatnot, but then, science is science. If anything, it helps to appreciate all the universe, and not just this blue gem" he smiles slightly "if you want a reason to appreciate this blue gem humans call home there, it's in that cupboard." and he points, where he knows and senses there are various sweets, oreos included. But he had his fair share of them this morning, so he doesn't get them.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods, taking the hint to head to the cupboard and get two packages of Oreos. With her back turned, she allows herself a small sigh, barely audible, her control of her thoughts slipping a little bit; there was worry, and no small amount of fear that she was outwardly giving no hint of. However, she was not used to guarding her mind for very long at all, to say the least. However, when she turns back around, she's smiling again. "Chocolate... one of Earth's great contributions to the universe."

Martian Manhunter has posed:
J'onn chuckles a bit, then nods in approval at Shannon's words "indeed! It's standard provision on almost every starship now, all because of humans. isn't this great?" and this may or may not be true!
He turns serious, however, sighing slightly too and checking that all the doors are closed, fortunately using other senses that are not sight so that his eyes can be pointed directly at Shannon. "I won't peek into your mind, Shannon, is not something I generally do without permission. Your private thoughts are your own, so you can stop trying to ward your mind against telepaths, it's good practice so you can go on, but well." he shrugs, shaking his head "and emotions are an entirely different thing, you're not exactly to the point of setting a shield against empaths too"

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon raises her eyebrows; she'd suspected he might have abilities along those lines, but this just confirmed it. "So I guess the old 'my dog ate my homework' excuse won't work with you, will it?" she quips, trying to make light of it. The worry might be felt more strongly, now that she'd been found out. There was just going to be no hiding anything from Mr. Green, was there? "It's been all over the student body since last night. Something messed up Logan badly enough that he wound up in the medbay--and he's got a healing factor even stronger than mine." She frowns deeply as she passes over one of the packages of Oreos. "I heard he just barely made it up here to the mansion, and basically collapsed. He's one of the toughest I know of, but if something was bad enough to knock him on his butt so that he barely made it up here... just how close to home was it? Was it somewhere on the grounds? I have no idea, and it scares the shit out of me."

Martian Manhunter has posed:
J'onn shakes his head "it won't work, but not because I'll peer into your mind and see why you didn't do your homeworks." he calmly states "it's important for people to trust me as I trust them, so their private matters are theirs and theirs alone, and that's all." he explains, or tries to.
Listening to what the woman is saying, he nods in light understanding, for a moment part of his mind thinking about the matter "there's several powered people in the school, Shannon, all set on the task of protecting, you included, both in the protecting and protected. It is good to be concerned, even a bit worried, but don't let it control you. The place is fairly safe and, I'm sure, soon enough you'll have more answers. Plus" he pauses, actually considering what to say or, to be precise, how much to reveal "consider something: there are various kinds of powers, someone physically invulnerable could be defeated via his mind, someone mentally shielded could be stabbed through the heart. Never think of people as invincible, the fact that Logan himself was wounded badly is reason enough to worry, but not to be scared to death"

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon smiles a little bit. "Nobody's ever entirely invincible, otherwise healers would be out of a job. But even if walls can be built... they can be breached." She shrugs, and plops down on the beanbag with her package of Oreos, tearing open the wrapper and devouring one of the sweet treats without even twisting it open for the filling in the center. "I'd never talk about this around the younger students, they've got their hands full just growing into their gifts. All of us do. They don't need to deal with this, too. Yeah, I know. Nobody's invulnerable. Just some are harder to knock down than others. And it's a pretty scary thing when it actually happens, even if you already know in the back of your mind that sooner or later, it can."

Martian Manhunter has posed:
J'onn listens carefully, his oreos still untouched, and yes he's definitely making a mental effort to do that. "true enough, but the sooner you turn that back corner into a front corner, the better. Invulnerability generates overconfidence, overconfidence is something your enemy can use against you. Overconfidence applies to your allies as well, send supermen into battle sure that he'll come out victorious, when for some circumstances the enemies had the only thing capable of hurting him, instead, you're left without a backup plan, the enemies come, and trash you while you plan the plan B."

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods, listening intently and taking the lesson to heart. "In the old myths, even gods had their weaknesses." She runs her fingers through her hair and sighs, frustration and helplessness rolling off of her mind in waves. "Just really pisses me off that someone would even take a swipe at him like that, and even more that there's not much I can do to help. If it was bad enough to land him in the medical bay, there's no way in hell I'd be able to heal the injuries." She cracks a little bit of a smile. "I can pretty well guess what he'd be telling me right now if he heard me. Go hit the gym. You really can't do anyone much good if you're all pissed off."

Martian Manhunter has posed:
J'onn nods tightly "and that'd be a quite good piece of advice. Some might call it being stoic, others being a cynical asshole, but when you can't do anything about something, then don't waste your energies worrying over it... Use them in a productive way, don't be all worried about the past, you won't be able to change it without access to time travel which you don't have for now, focus on the future instead. Don't be worried about someone that attacked Logan, nor feel pissed off because someone did so, there's bad people around that's why we all train, focus your energies in, I don't know, training or studying harder so that if tomorrow something like that will happen again and you're around, you'll be able to help."

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon nods. "He's never been an asshole to me, though, at least not so far. Tough, maybe, but not a jerk about it. Far from it." She sighs a little and tries to smile. "I guess none of us can ever be entirely ready, there's always someone who can take you down sooner or later. But we can make it real difficult for them, by training that much harder, and studying."

Martian Manhunter has posed:
J'onn shakes his head "I wasn't referring about him, to be honest I was talking about what some people say about me when i don't show the proper amount of emotions about things that I can't control." he comments, shrugging slightly. He's an alien, after all, he has alien reactions at times!
"exactly my point!" he exclaims, smiling at Shannon "so don't be scared to death, or if you want to be, then put those energies into improving yourself, that'd be more productive, not to mention less stressful for your mind."

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon shrugs. "Some people just don't show emotions really well, sometimes not even at all. Doesn't make them assholes, though. That's just how they deal with things. Nothing wrong with that. Chances are pretty good they feel just as deeply as anyone else, you just don't always see it. Lots of great examples in science fiction there." She nods as she listens to him, smiling a little bit. "I just might do that here in a little while. Sam's been bugging me about strength training, too."

Martian Manhunter has posed:
J'onn smiles, approvingly again "true, but some people don't see that." he simply states. Smoothly, he stands up from the chair, moving towards the cupboard and placing there the still closed package of oreos, then turns to Shannon again "it's better if I go back, I should have class in a few minutes and I'm afraid some students will grow restless and blow up the entire lab, again" he grins "be safe, Shannon, be well, not only physically." he then, still smiling, waits for an eventual answer before starting to approach the door, placing his right hand on the handle "oh, please, don't go around telling people they can't use the dog devoured my homeworks excuse, it's fun enough seeing them struggle to understand why it didn't work!" he chuckles, then opens the door and walks out.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon actually giggles a little bit. "Don't tell them what? I didn't hear anything. No idea what you're talking about." She winks, and gets up herself, dusting her jeans off as she prepares to head off to her next class for the day. Joy. Math. "Now if I could just figure out math as easily as music..." She, too, nears the door, but takes the package of oreos with her; it made little sense to leave the goodies behind, especially when it was likely she'd burn them off anyways. "You be safe, too. And I'll try not to worry too much... it's just real hard sometimes."
