Supergirl has posed:
The mild-mannered Kara Danvers was expecting a guest, so to speak, within her cozy adobe.

She had invited Carol Danvers (no relation) to come to her place, with absolutely no uniforms allowed. Kara had the sense that the military woman was a little more... well... that she wore that uniform a lot.

A LOT.

"MOM!" Kara calls. "I know you and dad were going to go out tonight, but could you help me with this lasagna before you go?" Kara had arranged it in the pan perfectly. Like a real chef. But dressed in a fluffy skirt and blouse, she was kinda sliding it into the oven, features screwing up.

"This is like my /boss/, so I gotta be like perfect," she says.

Captain Marvel (Danvers) has posed:
Carol had interpreted 'no uniforms allowed' as 'keep the power use to a minimum.' As a result, she'd flown from Tamarind Island until she was about a few blocks from the Danvers household, then she'd landed - changed from her uniform into something more casual - and walked the rest of the way.

She walks up the front lawn now, hands tucked into the pockets of the red leather jacket that she wears over the top of black crop top emblazoned with a yellow lightning bolt. A pair of faded blue jeans, red converse, and some aviators complete her look. She takes her time as she wanders up towards the porch, taking a long look around. It almost reminds her of the place she grew up, and it brings out a faint smile.

Knock knock, she raps her knuckles gently on the door before spotting the doorbell and wringing it, too, for good measure.

Supergirl has posed:
It was someone very unKaralike that opened the door, "Hey," says the woman that opened the door. Dark hair, kinda a military demeanor. "You're... Carol, right? The captain?" she asks. A glance up and down the woman. "I'm Alex, her sister," she offers, stepping aside. Alex was dressed all in black. Tight sweater, tight leggings, a holster that was empty, currently, and boots.

"She's in the kitchen, probably attempting to make a lasagna. I'm going out, though," she says, bringing up her hand to jerk over her shoulder past Carol.

"Make yourself at home, alright?" A beat more.

"KARA!" This house apparently did a lot of its work by shouting.

"Carol's here!"

"Ah my gosh, ah my gosh - I'm not ready!" comes a panicked sound from the kitchen.

Alex rolls her eyes, and is out. If Carol wanted to come in, at least.

Captain Marvel (Danvers) has posed:
"Thanks," Carol says with a faint smile, able to appreciate military demeanor and shouting, "Nice to meet you, Alex."

When Kara cries out from the kitchen, Carol can't help but wrinkle her nose and grin. The lasagna could be burned to a cinder and it seems as though that would not be able to put even the faintest scratch in her good time. When she's given leave to do so, Carol steps into the house and casts an eye around.

She doesn't know the layout of it, so it takes her a little wandering (doing her best to stay on course and not look like she's snooping) before she finds the kitchen. She clasps the doorframe and pokes her head in, still smiling - practically beaming.

"Hey, Kara."

Supergirl has posed:
And there were two women in the kitchen. One was a woman dressed as if she was ready to go out, all to the nines, and there was Kara, fretting over the lasagna on the countertop. "It seems so simple, but I'm so nervous, mom," she says to the other woman. She was a blonde too, with long hair - even if the facial features were different, if someone was /just/ looking at hair, well.

They might see the resemblance. Plus, her and Kara had a bunch of wavyness to it.

Kara /jumps/ at Carol's voice - of course she heard her at the front door, but it took everything in her power to keep her from wooshing back and forth and stay NORMAL SPEED.

And nearly bangs her head against one of the cabinets. Still. As Eliza Danvers kinda shakes her head at Kara, Kara slides the lasagna into the oven, pressing a button for the timer. "Captain!" she exclaims, straightening up and turning towards Carol, trying to put on a casually suave demeanor. Probably didn't work.

"I was /just/ finishing up the world famous Danvers Lasagna, so it'll have to cook. And afterwards, we can go take a walk or something," she says with a smile.

"I um. And this is my mom. Eliza," she says, making a gesture to the woman.

Eliza steps forward. "Sorry we cannot stay. My husband and I have a previous appointment, but we /are/ curious to meet the leader of Alpha Flight. Welcome to our house," she says.

Captain Marvel (Danvers) has posed:
"And I'm curious to meet the people who raised the most generous and kind-hearted person I've ever met," Carol tells Eliza in an earnest tone, extending a hand out to shake, "It's very nice to meet you, Mrs. Danvers - if you're curious about Alpha Flight, I'm sure I could arrange a tour for you."

She turns now to Kara, resisting the urge to wander too close for now - some small voice in the back of her mind lecturing her on propriety. But still, the way she's almost glowing (is she actually glowing? There's always a sort of warm shine to her, thanks to the nature of her powers) shows plainly just how happy she is to be where she is.

"That sounds wonderful," she tells Kara with that same smile, slipping her hands out of her pockets and clasping them together neatly behind her back, "Mac is covering for me, so nothing short of a global catastrophe could tear me away - and even then, it'd have to be a pretty big catastrophe."

Supergirl has posed:
An honest smile for Carol passes Mrs. Danvers lips, and Kara, well, once Kara manages to straighten up again from getting the lasagna in the oven, and all. She glances to her mom, and nods her head to her.

And Eliza lifts both her brows, "Well, we should be going," she says, moving past the kitchen to the main room, where she meets up with a man. Presumeably Kara's father. With nothing more than a wave, though, he waves across the room to Carol.

"That's my dad, Jeremy," whispers Kara to Carol, even as the two start on their way out and about.

"Anyways, Captain," she says. "Thank you for coming. And if there was like... a big emergency? I'd probably wanna go too," she says. "It's the superhero thing, you know?" she says, kinda tilting her head just so as she grins up to Carol. "Can I get you something NOT ALCOHOLIC to drink?" she asks.

Captain Marvel (Danvers) has posed:
"Have a good night, Mr. Danvers. Mrs. Danvers."

Carol's military-grade politeness is in full force as she smiles and watches the Danvers family make their exit. When they're gone, she turns her attention back to Kara and takes a small step closer to her. When she's tanked, Carol simply waves a hand and shakes her head.

"I wouldn't have missed this for the world," she explains, "I practically jumped at the chance to come over. We don't really get much time together that isn't 'on the clock', y'know?"

The corner of her mouth quirks into a half-smile at the mention of a drink: "Yes, please. I'm easy - whatever you've got."

She takes another look around the kitchen, hands returning to her jacket pockets.

"You grew up here? It's nice."

Supergirl has posed:
"Yes, from the time I was... I dunno. Eight or nineish? Until now," says Kara, kinda looking down a bit as she gives a little smile. "They're really great. I wanted them to stay for a whole dinner and meeting, and... well... I think my sister and you would get along. There's a lot of... I dunno. Similar military vibes between you two," she says.

"And no, we don't. There's only so much superheroing that can be done without getting girl time in!" she just about chirps.

"And we can go for a movie or something afterwards. Where'd you grow up? How are your folks?" she asks.

Inside the fridge were bottles! Of beer?! Kara grabs two, popping off the caps with her thumb before she offers one to Carol.

Oh. They weren't beer. Root beer.

Same difference.

"So um. Space station still in one piece?" she asks.

Captain Marvel (Danvers) has posed:
Carol seems momentarily reluctant as the bottles are produced from the fridge, a mildly pained look on her face - she didn't like the explanation she usually had to give when explaining why she didn't drink alcohol. But then they're revealed to be root beer and she breathes an almost audible sigh of relief, taking the opened bottle and sipping it gratefully.

"My mom's alive," she explains, her expression slightly uncomfortable, "My dad ... passed a few years ago. But we, uh, we have differences of opinion. We didn't really talk all that much."

She clears her throat, takes another swig of her drink, and continues: "I grew up in Boston, but my family spent a lot of time in Harpswell Sound, which is up the coast a bit. My mom lives there now with my brother Joe."

There's something unspoken there, but in the end, she chooses to leave it. When the topic changes, she brightens up considerably and leans against the kitchen counter.

"A movie sounds great. Though you could've said we're going out to watch grass grow or paint dry - I'd probably have enjoyed those, too, given the company."

A laugh and she nods: "Still in one piece far as I know. Despite best efforts to the contrary."

Supergirl has posed:
For all of Kara's wonderful aspects, she can sometimes be a little blunt or dense. Or both.

But she'd have to be a brick wall to miss that. First that odd look on Carol's features at the root beer, and the sigh of relief - then the way that fathers were spoken about. And unspoken. Kara's face softens, and she lifts her bottle of root beer to Carol at that statement.

"I'm sorry to hear that," she says.

"About both of those things," she adds, her voice drawing quiet in that. A swallow. "Boston is such a cool city," she says. "I should've guessed you were from there!" she chirps, her smile sparking strong and bright anew.

Kara doesn't prod on that unspoken something. Not yet.

The oven dings. The lasagna would be ready in a minute.

"You're so goofy, Captain," Kara says, casting a grin her way as she takes a swig of the root beer, her brightly blue eyes sparkling.

"I kinda nudged it on the way out the other day. Probably messed up the orbit. Might be crashing soon!" she gasps.

Captain Marvel (Danvers) has posed:
"Sounds like lasagna time," Carol says at the oven dings, moving over - she can't just let Kara do everything, after all. She's a guest, so she has to pull her weight.

She takes a sip of her root beer, bending forward to peer into the oven curiously before rising back up to her full height.

"Oh, I bump into it all the time," she jokes - hopefully she jokes! "I wouldn't worry about it. That's what retro boosters are for, isn't it?"

Grateful to not be questioned too thoroughly about her difficult family life, Carol throws herself into helping Kara prepare their dinner. All the while unable to help but casting a warm, genuine smile in Supergirl's direction.
