Never underestimate the power of soup!
Date of Scene: 08 November 2019
Location: Bushwick (Mutant Town), Brooklyn
Synopsis: Barry volunteers, meets a Guthrie, and they help an old man
Cast of Characters: Flash, Icarus

Flash has posed:
Barry wore a two-tone grey baseball cap, which effectively kept most of his blond hair out of view, but there were the telltale signs of a fishnet creeping down. Below that, he had a white long sleeved shirt and blue jeans. He was currently standing behind the counter, ladle in hand. He was stirring a large bowl of soup. There were six such bowls in front of him, each with a metal lid, preventing anyone from seeing what they were. In front of them, there was a glass shield, with smaller, regular sized white porcelain bowls stacked upside down.

Barry was volunteering, one of many, at St. John's Bread and Life on Lexington Avenue, while there was ample interest, given the cold weather outside. Some came for the warmth in their bellies, others for the food, and some just because they wanted to be out from the cold for a little while.

There was an old man at a table. Barry had been keeping an eye on him, worried that he might need a trip to the hospital. He'd already googled the nearest one, in case he had to make an emergency trip. He didn't want anyone to die, not on his watch.

Icarus has posed:
It was after the school day but before his shift at work in Mutant Town so Jay was out and about. He was dressed casually in a pair of baggy jeans with an equally baggy hoody covering his upper body. Over the hoodie was another heavier jacket, again way bigger than it should be for a person with his frame. A pair of sneakers were on his feet. The hoodie was pulled up but the bright red hair was visible around the front edge.

He stepped into the soup kitchen, glancing around. One of the regulars who came by the club after hours for handouts hadn't been there the previous evening. They often had some leftovers so rather than scrap then, Jay would sometimes give them to those in need. In return, they sometimes would have information to share with him about the status of things in Mutant Town, as it was called by so many.

Tucking his hands in his pockets, he began to work his way through the crowd but didn't spot who he was looking for so headed to the chow line. "Excuse me. I was looking for a guy who might come in here. Probably in his sixties or so, gray hair, receding hair line. Always wearing a black peacoat. Goes by Ray. You seen him?"

Flash has posed:
Barry was serving out soup. There was another person on the bread station. Another doing dishes. Some were helping people to their seats, or cleaning tables. There were tons of jobs around here for people. With a warm smile, Barry explained to each patron who asked, and didn't just read the labels, that "we have minestone, potato soup, clam chowder, tomato soup, chicken noodle soup, and my own personal concoction, cheeseburger soup." The cheeseburger soup was surprisingly popular, so much so that Barry had to move off the line a couple of times to make some more. It was a personal recipe that he wasn't keen on giving out, but more than happy to make it.

When the young man approached with questions, "I'm sorry, it's my first time volunteering here. I don't know a lot of names, but there's a guy over there that matches the rest of the description. I'm a bit worried about him, didn't come in looking too good. I'm Barry by the way." He'd offer to shake hands, but he wore plastic gloves, and there was the glass barrier between them. "Would you like some soup in the meantime?"

Icarus has posed:
"Oh no thanks on the soup. Save it for the folks that need it. I'm Jay," he offers by way of introduction, glancing over in the direction Barry indicated. "Yeah, that's him. At least he's out of the cold. I work in the area and he usually comes by when we close to get some of the leftovers, instead of us throwing them out. He didn't show last night so I got worried."

He shrugs bonelessly then steps to the side to allow a young woman and her son to get their bowl of cheeseburger soup. "Hopefully he'll stay here tonight out of the cold."

Flash has posed:
Barry continued to serve up the soup, a few people wanted their favourite, whatever that might happen to be. But the cheeseburger soup was proving to be disproportionately popular. Probably a mixture of the name and the fact it was new. A lot of people liked to 'experiment', if having something cheeseburger flavoured counted as experimentation.

"It's supposed to get down to 40 degrees out there tonight," he said to Jay, concern on his face. Barry, as a scientist, instinctively used the metric system, which was 4 Celsius, but converted it in his head to Fahrenheit for Jay's sake. "Hey, Jay, if you don't finish all of yours, you could always share it with him." He poured a piping hot fresh bowl of cheeseburger soup. If Jay didn't accept it, likely the next person in the queue would. It was his way of saying, take Ray a second bowl, without it being obvious.

Icarus has posed:
Jay's pretty quick for a country boy from Kentucky. "Well, it does smell good," he says as he is offered the bowl. He reaches out to take it very carefully, giving a nod to Barry. "Thanks. I'll see if he plans to stay in here and if so, let them know to keep a bed open for him."

With that he takes the bowl and heads over toward Ray. "Hey! Missed you last night," he says as he settles into the chair next to the man. He slips the bowl of soup in front of Ray with a smile. "Wanted to come check on you. We missed you and wanted to be sure you had something warm to eat and a place to sleep with it getting colder."

Flash has posed:
Barry had grown up in a farm in Iowa, but he had always aspired to something greater, and long ago shed much of his accent. It was sometime while attending Sun City University in Orlando, though having spent so many years in Central City, Missouri, didn't help much. It took a great deal of effort to try and affect a neutral, almost TV-like accent. He continued to dish out bowls of soup, until the cheeseburger soup was running low, and he traded with Kenny, while he went back to the kitchen to whip up another batch.

While on his way back there, he made sure to reserve a bed for Ray, given the suspected medical condition. For his part, Ray was surprised to see Jay. "He-hello," he said, still cold, despite being bundled up and in a warm environment. He has slept rough last night, having been unable to get a bed anywhere. It was a worrying problem. "Than-ank you, Jay." He was still eating his bread, but it was really tough for him to chew. The bowl slipped in front him brought joy to the old man. Setting aside the bread for a moment, he began to dig into the soup.
