Profile
As the daughter of David Cain and Lady Shiva, Cassandra Cain stood to inherit an unsurpassed mastery of the martial and assassination arts. Raised in absolute silence and constant, brutal combat training, Cassandra's brain has been optimized to read bodies in lieu of spoken or written language. At the age of nine, Cassandra's first experience in taking life left her mortified and determined to prevent killing however she may. She has since joined the Bat-Family as a caped vigilante, the newest Batgirl. She has managed to break free of some, but not all, of her chains. Her past haunts her. And this broken girl with a broken mind seeks redemption. And to prove she is better than her breeding.

Description
Description:
At five feet and five inches tall, Batgirl's height does not make her impressive. In fact, her height might be the least frightening thing about this young woman. On the other hand, her outfit demands respect. It is black from the tip of its bat ears all the way to her toes, except for the yellow outline of a bat on her chest and a yellow utility belt. Said outfit fits snugly against her body, and doesn't leave much to the imagination, yet allows her complete and total freedom of movement. The head of the costume not only has pointed bat ears, but it also has an area around the mouth that looks to be be sewn in, which not only makes sure the mask leaves no skin exposed, but also adds a bit of a creepy aspect to this silent warrior. Then, as if to complete the ensemble, and possibly to help blend in with the darkness, there is a long, billowing black cape that goes over her shoulders, and ends just barely above the ground.
The outfit isn't what makes Batgirl imposing. When she moves, or even if she's standing still, there's a certain aspect to her body language that's hard to place. Something that lends her an air of danger. Something that makes her look and stand like she knows she can kill those who look at her with ease. Of course, she wouldn't do that. ...Would she?
History
History:
Cain's plan was to restrict Cassandra's upbringing to nothing more than martial arts. Killing. And, by refusing to teach her how to communicate with words, letters, she would learn in other ways. And, Cassandra did. She learned how to interpret people's body language, beyond micro emotions to the point of near pre-cognition. Cain would bring in such prominent mentors as Merlyn, Bronze Tiger, Alpha, and others to train Cassandra in the deadly arts of martial skills. She learned, under a rigorous regime of training how to strike at a person's nerve endings to shut down their body at various key points, how to use weapons. And, most importantly to Cain, how to kill.
When Cassandra was 9 years old, Cain made the decision that she was ready to start the next level of her training and begin to assassinate people. Cassandra, thinking her father was playing a game with her, killed the man he'd set in front of her without even thinking. A simple strike to the throat.
That was where her father erred. She read the man's emotions in that single moment. As she would later tell Batman: 'Terror. Then ... nothing.'
Horrified at what she saw, confused, angry, Cassandra attacked her father, uppercutting him and she ran away. For whatever reason, Cain did not persue her or attempt to stop her.
Cassandra would spend the next years living on the streets of Gotham. Living off refuse, handouts, and in the slums, confused, and afraid of herself. It would only be when, by pure accident, she ended up saving Commissioner Gordon's life that she earned the attention of Oracle through one of her agents.
And, now, the most recent Batgirl to hold the title after Batman and Oracle both agreed to bring her into the Batfamily, Cassandra Cain has found a true home. And maybe. Just maybe, she can start healing. And find some form of redemption from the mental anguish she's been through - both by product of her father, and what she herself has driven herself to.
Personality
Personality:
She knows, mostly, how to deal with these emotions. She finds comfort in a measure of distance, and is unused to people caring about her well being, but she certainly likes that feeling. She's just scared to get used to it and have it lost. She's used to being alone, independent, and scared. And having a measure of security, having a chance is new and foreign to her.
Because of her language barrier, to those that don't know her she can come across as blunt, bitchy, or cold. Sometimes this is the case. Sometimes it is not.
Cassandra has sworn to herself she will never kill. However, to teach someone a lesson she might stop, then restart their heart. She has little patience for violators, and is as brutal as The Batman himself in dealing with crime. Broken bones, torn ligaments are not an issue for her and don't earn a second thought.
More than anything, Cassandra wants to be understood. To be loved. To belong to a family who is on the right side. To redeem herself. To make a difference.
Abilities
Lie Detector:
Cassandra can tell with near-faultless accuracy if somebody is attempting to lie while they are speaking, in reading the tells of their body, tone, and facial expressions. She requires close vision of a target's uncovered face to be able to do this. In understanding body movement like others might faces, Cassandra can generally ignore a disguise if she's paying enough attention to person wearing it.
Meditation & Chi:
Cassandra has enough control of her body to force herself into a near-comatose state to emphasize healing and recovery. She can greatly increase her rate of natural recovery by sleeping for prolonged (20hr) periods of time. Her knowledge of a body's energy has allowed her to temporarily pause a man's heartbeat by striking his heart - and then striking it again to resume. These abilities take focus to perform and are not so well-rehearsed as to see fluid use in a fistfight.
Optimized Human:
There's human limits, and then there's the true limit of a brain customized for violence. Cassandra Cain's entire life has been spent in the pursuit of martial mastery. Compared to world athletes of her size and stature, Cassandra hits just a little harder, moves just a little faster, and reacts just a little more fluidly. She isn't just representative of peak human ability - she represents what humans COULD be if every neuron in their brain worked towards physical perfection.
Pain Control:
Through childhood games and intensive training, Cassandra has a astounding level of control over her body's reflexes and can shrug off even the most severe pain. While this does nothing to address the damage incurred by an attack, Cassandra generally does not flinch unless incoming damage is enough to knock her out.
Poison Resistance:
Through her mastery of her body processes, if Cassie is aware that she is poisoned quickly enough after the initial exposure, she can focus and 'burn' through the deadliest effects of the toxin. This is typically an exhausting effort and will require Cassandra recover for a day.
Prodigy:
In being as tuned to physicality as she is, Cassandra can learn and master most forms of physical communication in breathtakingly short periods of time. Batman taught her stick fighting in five minutes. She has co-opted unfamiliar fighting techniques seconds after having them performed on her.
Cassandra is one of the pre-eminent maritial artists in the world owing to her incredible instincts and physical processing. She is potentially surpassed only by the likes of Richard Dragon and Lady Shiva so far as natural human ability is concerned. She has exploded punching bags and broken quality swords with a handthrust.
Pure Instinct:
With her instinctive level of processing, Cassandra has been able to dodge multiple bullets fired at her, snatch shurikens out of the air before they hit her, and single-handedly take on entire rooms full of skilled combatants. She is able to engage in combat with lower-end speed-enhanced metahumans without any considerable disadvantage.
This ability relies on her opponents exhibiting ordered movement and thought patterns. It is rare, but some individuals are so deranged and out-of-sync that she's unable to determine their next moves. The Joker is the most notable example of this special category of opponent.
Skills
Asl:
Due to the fact she can read body language at a level that only a few in the world can, it made sense that a form of language for her would require movement. She learned American Sign Language at an astonishing rate. She is able to communicate effectively with someone who knows how to sign. She tends to still be terse when using ASL or speaking, since both are strange to the way her brain works.
Assassination Arts:
Cassandra has been trained by her father David Cain in just about every known killing art there is. Bare-handed, equipped, or improvising, the language of death is Cassie's mother tongue and her natural instinct in practically every combat encounter she experiences.
Body Language:
Her upbringing was purposefully abusive, and designed to forego teaching her any measure of linguistical skills to essentially 'shut down' that portion of her brain and allow it to foster faster response time, and understanding of intent by the human body. As a result, Cassandra is able to read body language, from anything from social interactions to intensive combat. Thus, she can read essentially what an opponent is doing before they do it, and this allows her to perform such feats as dodging bullets or countering a low end speed-enhanced meta's attack because she knows what is going on essentially just before it happens. It is, in some ways, a form of very basic pre-cognition and battle instinct.
However, it has been shown that in severe cases, like that of the Joker, whose insanity is so deep, their body movements do not make any sense at all to her. In these extremely rare cases, Cassandra is essentially blind, and unable to react. She relies heavily on her ability to read movements and having it removed or nullified puts her at a severe disadvantage.
Martial Arts:
Cassandra is among the best trained martial arts fighters in the world. Among those who trained her were her father, David Cain, Bronze Tiger, Merlyn the Archer, and Alpha, along with others her father hired and she has the potential to grow yet even further. She is also getting further training from Batman now that she is in his 'Family'. At present, her training is sufficient that should could go toe-to-toe with the likes of Lady Shiva, or even Batman in a pure martial arts fight.
Nerve Strikes:
In addition to her training with martial arts, Cassandra was trained on how to fight using 'nerve strikes', jabbing her hand/fingers into specific pressure points on the body to 'shut down' a system. An arm. A leg. Lungs. Even a heart. And, how to re-engage it as well.
Of course, these nerve strikes require accessible flesh to be effective, so they are utterly ineffective if someone is wearing any type of body armor in those areas.
Parkour:
Batgirl is quite proficient at 'Rooftop Running', getting around the enviornment, climbing, and manuevering and, as a highly trained martial artist, she has exceptional balance. There are certainly people in the world more skilled than her at it, but she's good enough at it that it doesn't slow her down in chasing someone over rooftops, or getting to where she needs to go.
She is especially adept at utilizing her grappling hook to make the most of her speed and transition from one area to another if it may seem inaccessible or take longer to reach through jumping/climbing and keeping a steady pace throughout her movements.
Pickpocket:
In keeping with her abilities at stealth and her time wandering the streets, Cassandra's a deft hand at taking things from a person without them knowing. She's no career pickpocket, but she's a natural in understanding times when a mark might just be distracted enough.
Security:
As a perfect assassin, Cassandra was trained in the art of breaching a perimeter. Her skills to shadow guardsmen, identify ingresses, and repeat security protocols were honed until David Cain was convinced no building could prevent his daughter from entering.
Stealth:
David Cain's torturous lessons included primers on the art of not being seen. While Cassandra owes plenty of her success to her preternatural awareness, the notion of hiding is well-practiced in its own regard. Cassandra knows how to make the shadows a second skin, and what the whites of a man's eyes mean.
Weapons:
Resources
Bat Family:
Cassandra is a member of the 'Bat Family'. Essentially this means that she can call any of them for help anytime she needs it, as well as have access to their knowledge, information, and experience for solving problems, innumerable resources, or even just a combat buddy. It means that help, in most cases, can always be right around the corner. It also means she can be called in to assist, at any given time to Robin, Batman, or any others in the 'Bat Family' also. They protect each other.
The 'Bat Family' is also mildly dysfunctional, as a true 'family', however. So, in most cases, getting everyone together for Christmas Dinner probably isn't going to happen. But that's okay with Cassandra. She doesn't even know what Christmas is, really.
Bat-Gear:
Cassandra's utility belt carries the full assortment of standard Bat-gear. The iconic batarangs are there in bladed and blunt variety, along with a variety of smoke pellets, explosive gels, interfacers, and that ubiquitous Grapnel Gun.
Batcave:
Cassandra has access to one of the most powerful computers and areas in the world. The Batcave, and all of it's resources. While she probably can't take the Batmobile out for a joyride (without getting in serious trouble), or use the Batcomputer (since she is still learning and must be supervised), she has full access to most of the equipment, rooms, and functions the Batcave has to offer as a member of the Bat Family.
Batcycle:
As Batgirl, Cassandra has a Batcycle which she rides. The Batcycle is capable of astounding speeds when boosted, and has reinforced tires that can withstand some substantial damage, including self-repair from a bullet or two, as well as being armored. The motorcycle has maximum manuverability, and response time. Harley Dadvison is jealous.
Costume:
Weaknesses
Family:
Cassandra's parents are David Cain, and Lady Shiva. They are not exactly mother/father of the year. And while neither David or Shiva have shown interest in Cassandra to date since she ran off, that doesn't mean they might not in the future. Shiva also probably wouldn't balk at killing Cassandra, if she felt matters should come down to it.
Just Human:
Cassandra, like the rest of the Bat Family, is merely mortal. This means, ultimately, knives cut, bullets either severely wound or kill. Bones break. And, in any injury, there will need to be a healing regiment, and physical training to get back to her prior condition - and some injuries might ultimately incapacitate her from ever being Batgirl again.
Language:
Because of the abusive way in which Cassandra was trained, her mind is unable to form spoken languages at any real level. She can state simple one to three-word sentences, at most, with pauses in between. She is unable to express herself in expansive words, her vocabulary is instead quite limited to more basic words that consist mostly of 1-2 syllables. While she has learned to use American Sign Language, she still finds it foreign.
This does not limit her understanding of what people are saying around her, she can understand them perfectly. It's merely the fact that her mind is locked in how she can form words, and it would literally take a telepath to rewire her brain to fix her. If that were the case, it's very probable that she would also lose her ability to read body language also. The two are tied together, like yin and yang.
Murderphobia:
Cassandra is terrified she will kill again. Her father's plans to teach her body language backfired, when she killed the man he'd presented to her. She saw it, then. 'Terror. Then ... Nothing.' And, she'd clocked her father a good one, and ran away.
She has promised herself that she will never kill again. But, it's how she was programmed. And if she is not focused every single moment in a fight and restraining herself to some degree, she knows she could accidentally kill someone. And that would not only set her on the outs with the one man who is taking care of her, and trying to help her redeem herself (Batman), but also most likely break the poor girl's mind as she is now.
