Profile

Bigby Wolf is the 'Big Bad Wolf' of old tales, or a very reasonable facsimile thereof originating from an alternate dimension populated by such myths, or Fables. The antagonist of many stories told and untold, Bigby has tasted the blood of innocent and guilty alike many times over the centuries, until gradually reforming throughout a war waged on the Homelands by a being called the Adversary. Forced to flee despite a ferocious fight, Bigby is one of a number of refugees living largely under the radar in New York City, working as a private investigator and protector of his kind, seeking atonement through decidedly anti-heroic methods.

Description:

Bigby Wolf is a large, hairy, robust man.

He appears to be in his early 40s, and has the physique of a tank. His limbs are like tree-trunks, with large, meaty hands, and are covered in quite the display of body hair -- much like the stuff on his chest. He has a squarish-shaped head with a strong jaw, a long nose and a slightly olive complexion. Upon his head is a veritable mane of umber hair, and he has perpetual stubble on his jaw.

His eyes are a brilliant, keen amber.

Bigby prefers to wear a baggy suit, with dark grey pants, boots on his feet, a white button-up shirt with a black tie -- worn loose about his neck -- and a long, dark trenchcoat over the top. He is almost always smoking a cigarette and smells of it -- and 'dog'.

History

History:

Bigby Wolf is the eldest of several brothers, son of a werewolf mother, and an air-elemental father known as the North Wind. He was born into a dimension where characters are given life by the stories told about them; they call themselves Fables.

For most of his life, he played the villain -- tormenting the weak, the innocent... he razed buildings, murdered citizens... for centuries. He was arrested, nearly executed -- when the Homelands were invaded, and the various kingdoms of Fables found themselves on the brink of extinction.

Bigby reformed. He took the fight back to the armies of 'The Adversary', until it became clear that if any of the Fables wanted to survive, they would have to flee. Now they are spread out across Earth, living in secret -- some, at least. Bigby roamed the Earth for some years -- decades, in fact -- all across the Americas and Europe, before settling in New York.

He took the guise of a man, and put his skills to work as a private investigator -- only bringing out 'the wolf' when necessary. He made some friends -- other fighters, like himself, and some who walked in that 'realm of magic' interwoven with the physical plane. Through such friends, he recently joined the Defenders. He also made enemies.

This world seemed to have plenty of them -- but at least the Fables-in-exile, like Bigby Wolf, were not being hunted to extinction here. Yet.

Personality

Personality:

Bigby is a 'do what's necessary' type. He would prefer to hand criminals over to the law for their 'just desserts', but that is not always a viable option. He'd kill if he had to. He has terrorised 'the weak' before -- now he believes 'the strong' should protect them. He also believes 'the weak' should learn to defend themselves, as much as they can. The punishment should fit the crime, in his opinion -- and he likes to come up with 'fitting' punishments, even if they might be considered unorthodox. He reformed. Others can too.

As for other matters, he is exceptionally loyal to family -- having spurned his own for so long. Keeping families together (as much as possible) is a big deal to him -- it's that 'pack mentality'. He is a wolf after all. He is also especially sensitive to the power of faith -- it's a magic unto itself, and people can put a lot of faith in legends. Stories. He loves stories, and is always willing to hear them -- providing he's allowed to smoke. He does have a sense of humour, even if it is very dry.

Abilities

Air Elementalism:
Bigby's father was an elemental known as the North Wind. Consequently, he has some control over air, and the weather. The most common use of these powers is to inhale very deeply, and blast things with an extremely forceful breath -- enough to smash down walls, modest buildings, trees (part of a forest, in fact), etc. He is able to hold his breath for about three weeks (after which he would then drown).

Bigby can also influence air currents without having to use his lungs. His control is limited, but can mimic some telekinesis (such as shutting a door), or provide 'lift' to aid in his leaping abilities given his already very powerful legs. Creating lightning is possible, but difficult and he has little to no fine-control over it.

Healing Factor:
A werewolf's healing abilities are highly advanced, and Bigby is no exception. Minor wounds heal in minutes. Broken limbs and severely damaged organs might take a number of hours. He can regenerate missing limbs -- except his head -- over days. Fire damage and injuries from silver weapons take longer -- sometimes much longer -- to heal. He is also susceptible to enchanted weapons.

Immortal:
Bigby is a creature of magic, and will likely live forever -- but he can still be killed. He has to eat (a lot), sleep (not much), and breathe (again, not much), and there are things that can kill him fairly easily. Barring that, he is effectively immortal.

Lycanthropy:
On one side of his family, Bigby is a werewolf. He can shapeshift all or part of his body, at any time of day or night, into a creature with distinctive lupine features and abilities. While others of his siblings can turn into just about anything, Bigby is limited to 'wolfy' forms -- at various stages between 'beast' and 'man'. Most commonly, he turns into a 9-ft tall wolfman that weighs over a third of a ton, or sometimes a direwolf the size of a large horse.

Superhuman Physique:
Bigby's strength, speed, agility, endurance and durability are all enhanced to superhuman levels. In the form of a man, he is about as strong to flip over a typical vehicle. In full werewolf form, he can pick up cars and throw them with ease. His claws and teeth are sharp enough to shred metal, and on all fours would be able to outrun most cars. Leaping twenty feet up is not an issue (even without using his aeromancy abilities), and he possesses the agility of an acrobat (a very large one, with fur).

He is a creature of magic, and highly resistant to physical damage. Bullets are of little consequence (so long as they are not silver). When it comes to endurance and fatigue, the word 'tireless' comes to mind. He could last several days at a dead run if need be -- providing there was a large meal at the other end.

Werewolf Senses:

In all his forms, Bigby's senses are extremely potent -- so potent in fact, that he has to dull them down. He is especially adept at reading emotions, to the point that it would be mistaken for psychic empathy. He can tell minute details about multiple individuals in a crowded room, just from sound and smell alone. His eyesight is designed for hunting at night, and he can track thermal signatures. Even compared to his strength and speed, Bigby's senses are likely his defining trait -- and are put to the most use. At the same time, they give him the most grief.

Skills

Arcane:
While he is not a mage as such, Bigby does have a working knowledge of various types of magic (a necessity in his line of work, particularly in his home dimension). He could learn to cast spells if he wanted to (and already does, after a fashion, given his mixed heritage). More than anything else he can *smell* magic -- at least, that is how he describes it -- and has no trouble seeing and speaking with ghosts, spectres etc, generally speaking.

Combat:
For centuries, fighting is all that Bigby ever did. It is mainly instinct, rather than fine training, but he has made it his lifestyle for so very long. He can use firearms (in human form), and is a good shot. 'Wolfing-out' is a big deal for him, so he likes to rely on his fists, or other weapons (such as swords, or a sidearm).

Driving:
He can drive a car (in human form, that is) with better than average skill. He prefers to run, if at all possible. Bigby is not a stunt-driver by any means.

Interrogation:
'Bad Cop' is a role that Bigby Wolf has perfected. He brings all his powers of intimidation to bear when trying to get details from a suspect -- or an uncooperative witness. He has indulged in darker forms of interrogation in the Past... but tries to avoid that now.

Investigation:
This is something Bigby has worked hard to develop into a decent vocation. It'd pay more if he were not so concerned with staying below the radar, so to speak. He is a gifted 'detective' even without the badge.

Tracking:

He is a wolf; tracking and hunting is what they do. He has the senses to pursue a target across large landmasses (although he'd be thwarted by water, and other noises if there were enough distractions). He's like a trained bloodhound.

Resources

Canines:
Like wolves, dogs seem to regard Bigby as an 'alpha' and tend to defer to him -- some of them, anyway. Among Fable-wolves, he is known as both 'Lord of Wolves' and 'God of Wolves'. He is, in a sense, their counterpart to Fenris.

Defenders:
Bigby is only a recent addition to the group, and only really knows one person -- Doctor Strange. They are allies whose trust he will still have to earn, but he will come running if called.

Other Fables:
Folks from Bigby's homeland tend to know who each other is, and can sometimes prove to be valuable allies. Bigby has a bit of a 'network' of his own, of which he sometimes avails himself.

Private Eye Business:

Bigby isn't out to make a fortune; he has a small business in the lower-economic areas of New York City, but his job takes him all over. It pays the bills and keeps a den over his head, so to speak. 'House-magic' is a common thing where he comes from, and small cottages (or offices in the city) can be 'bigger on the inside'.

Weaknesses

Bloodlust:
Bigby has to wrestle with 'the beast within' at all times. Getting him very angry is a dangerous thing to do, as he may well lose control and 'wolf out'. He has learned to resist the scent of blood, but in battle there is always a chance he will go berserk.

Chain-Smoker:
Bigby is unlikely to die of lung-cancer (his healing factor is too good for that), but smoking in a 'non-smoking' world, as it were, can create problems for him all the time. He mainly does it to drown out the extreme amount of sensory input he receives from everyone around him. Whether by sight, sound or smell, taste or touch... it is hard for him to 'not-read' people. The smoking helps.

Fire:
This is also a big problem for him, partly physical and partly psychological. It would be fair to say he has a phobia of fires, although it is not crippling (a campfire or stovefire wouldn't bother him much). As injuries go, burns take longer to heal than other wounds.

Grizzly:
Bigby doesn't always mean to come off as gruff and grizzly. He cares a lot, but like many other who 'have a Past' and a lot of baggage to go with it, he struggles in expressing himself. He can be imposing even when he does not want to be.

Hair:
Even in human guise, Bigby tends to grow a full beard so fast that he has to shave multiple times a day (which he can do with his claws if he wanted, except it wouldn't be that 'clean' a shave). It is... quite annoying for a guy who does not want to be a walking shrubbery.

Sensory Overload:
As anyone with super-senses will attest, it can be as much a curse as a blessing. Extremes of sound and light (and smell) can overwhelm Bigby and cause him great pain, nausea, dizziness -- or just make him very irritable.

Silver:
Bigby is highly susceptible to silver. To touch it give him minor burns, but should it penetrate his skin... such an injury would take days to heal at least. Silver lodged inside his body (like a bullet) would thwart his healing factor and prevent him from healing until it was removed. Silver can kill him.

Sins of the Past:
He might be reformed now, but Bigby has a checkered... and bloody history. There's a reason they called him 'the Big Bad'. He has a lot for which to atone and it gnaws at his conscience day and night. He has also amassed his share of enemies.

Size Matters:

He is already a big man, but as a werewolf he is huge. This means that moving through houses etc, he has the potential to be the proverbial 'bull in a china shop'. He can generally move around a crime scene without disturbing it, but then he's usually in human form for that.
