Profile

Brian was born in Maldon, Essex, and educated at Fettes College in Edinburgh. He came from an aristocratic family that was no longer wealthy enough to fraternize with their former peers, and Brian was too proud to do so with the lower classes, making for a lonely childhood, where his older brother Jamie, and his fraternal twin Elizabeth, were his primary friends. It did however; give him ample time to immerse himself in the study of physics. After the death of his parents, Sir James and Lazy Elizabeth Braddock, he took a fellowship at the remote Darkmoor Energy Research Centre in Northern England. When it came under attack, he sought help on his motorcycle. Pursued, he drove over a cliff, and would have died, if not for the intervention of the wizard Merlin and his daughter Roma. He was offered a choice; the Amulet of Right, or the Sword of Might. He chose the Amulet and became the Captain Britain of Earth-1999, but one member of the Captain Britain Corps, an omniversal peacekeeping force. Over time, three more Captain Britain's would emigrate to Earth-1999, ensuring that Britain was protected. It was then that Merlin appeared before Brian. He was needed in Avalon, for the Hellmouth was vulnerable.

Description

The first thing most people see is a massive, barrel chest. At 198 cm tall, or 6'6", very few people don't have to look up to this blond-haired, blue-eyed, piece of beefcake. He really is. The man is cut. And he's dressed finely. His suit is tailored, probably by one from Savile Row in Mayfair, London. It is sapphire blue, with a matching vest. The jacket appears to be missing for the moment, probably left in the car, or hung up on a rack somewhere.

He has a white Egyptian cotton shirt, with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. The fabric really strains to contain his massive upper arms, bunching in all the best areas. He has a vest over top, giving him a slim appearance, not that he needed it. Mostly, it's to keep his steel blue tie from flapping about as he moves. His belt is black leather, with a simple, but elegant silver buckle, and his shoes are very nice. He may have just had them polished. They are oxford style.

His skin is fair, though he's clearly spent some time in the sun to develop a nice base tan. His eyes are more of a royal blue. And his hair, allowed to grow out a little, has a natural wave to it, making it look almost like a lion's mane. When he speaks, it is with a posh English accent. He is a Londoner. There can be no mistaking that. And when he smiles, he fully dispels the notion that the English have bad teeth. His are perfect.

History

Brian Braddock was born at Braddock Manor in Maldon, Maldon District, Essex. He is the second born son of Sir James Braddock, M.D., and his wife, Elizabeth. He was a fraternal twin, Betsy, and he was the responsible one growing up. He was always trying to set a good example, to be the good one, never going out, and never causing a scene. He would rather curl up with a good book than party until all hours of the evening.

He graduated early, going on to earn a Bachelor's of Physics from London's prestigious Thames University, and is currently working on his Master's of Engineering from New York's Empire State University. During the holidays between courses at Thames, he worked at the Darkmoor Energy Research Centre in northern England. It was attacked, and as it was a remote location, he fled on his motorcycle in order to get help. But he was run off the road.

Bleeding and near death, he was approached by Merlin and Roma, who offered to save him if he would become the next champion of Britain. He had a choice, the Amulet of Right, or the Sword of Might. As a scholar, he chose the Amulet and became Captain Britain, complete with a costume, super powers, and a quarterstaff, which later was reworked into the costume.

He has gone through a few costumes since that night. He has learned that he is a member of the Captain Britain Corps, a sort of Interdimensional police force. Recently, Merlin urged him to relocate to America, specifically the borough of Avalon in Blüdhaven. He will be needed in the coming battle, and was instructed to move wholesale. He even learned that his father had left a Castle in Caernarvon. He knows not what the future holds, only that he is the right person, at the right time, and in the right place.

Personality

Brian Braddock considers it a sacred duty to be Captain Britain. Once, he thought that meant to protect the United Kingdom. But over time, and the meddling of a certain Arthurian legend, he has come to accept that he has a higher calling. He has immigrated to a new land because of it, and is doing his best to fit in. But still, it can be difficult to sacrifice one's own desires and beliefs for another. He misses his home. He misses his old life. He would rather be in a laboratory. But he is a hero. He does it, every single day, and makes this world a better place, but it never gets any easier. And it's not the life he sought.

Brian Braddock lost his parents early in life and it has only got worse from there. This has left him in a bad place. It is in his nature to protect those around him, but he wasn't able to protect those closest to him. Because of this, he is very cautious with his heart. He would like to start a family, he has a yearning for it, but if everyone around him suffers, how could he ask someone else to take on that? He really could use a psychiatrist to sort out the baggage he's carrying. It can really play on his confidence.

Brian is deeply introspective and analytical. When given time, he will look at a problem from every angle, until he has found the optimum solution. He will labour over those kinds of decisions. But in life, you do not always have time to evaluate a situation. In combat, sometimes it is them, or us. And he will always choose us. Unlike most of the other nobler superheroes, Brian has no qualms about killing an opponent who has endangered others. He does not look for it, he does not relish it, but he will make the hard choices. It is his duty. Because Brian truly believes that he knows best, and is sure that he can handle any situation.

Abilities

ENERGY CONDUIT
Captain Britain's abilities are fueled by interdimensional energies, such as those that permeate Braddock Lighthouse in Hale, Hatton, Cheshire, and the Hellmouth in Sunnydale, Avalon, Blüdhaven. Sources such as these appear to have a vast range, as Braddock Manor is 297 km from the Lighthouse. His uniform collects and stores these energies, whether he wears it or not. When he moves beyond the range of these energies, which he has yet to ascertain, his suit ceases to collect energy, and instead expends it. If he left these energies for a long enough time, and spent enough of his stored energies, he would revert to being an ordinary human being. Unfortunately, he has no idea how long or how much each action takes up. He has no gauge or any other kind of measuring device.

FLIGHT
Captain Britain's uniform is capable of directed levitation. He can hover in the air, moving in 360 degrees, and at great speeds. At his peak, he is capable of surpassing the Speed of Sound, 343 metres per second. The force field that grants him his superhuman durability enables him to withstand the rigors of travelling at such high velocities. Otherwise, he would not be able to breathe properly, and it would ravage human tissue.

SUPER AGILITY
Brian Braddock's agility, balance, and bodily coordination are enhanced to levels that are beyond the natural physical limits of the finest human athlete. This may be due to his status as a human-Otherworldian hybrid.

SUPER DURABILITY
While wearing his uniform, Captain Britain's body is surrounded by an invisible field of force that renders him highly resistant to physical injuries. This "force field" allows him to sustain being repeatedly struck by superhumanly strong opponents, such as the Juggernaut, extremes in temperature, and powerful energy blasts. A notable omission is airborne issues, such as toxic gas, or something that may irritate his eyes or skin, which are visible through his mask. Repeated impacts from sufficiently powerful forces or weaponry will weaken and, eventually, penetrate the field.

SUPER REFLEXES
Brian Braddock's reflexes are enhanced to levels that are beyond the natural physical limits of the finest human athlete. This may be due to his status as a human-Otherworldian hybrid.

SUPER SENSES
Captain Britain can purposely draw upon the interdimensional energies that grant him his other abilities, to temporarily increase the efficiency of his senses, enhancing them to superhuman levels. He can see objects with perfect clarity at much greater distances than a normal human can. His hearing is similarly enhanced, allowing him to hear further than a human and to detect sounds normal humans can't. Cycling through each sense, they are similarly enhanced. He must consciously focus on the sense he wishes to enhance. It is a deliberate action, not a passive ability like most similarly enhanced superheroes.

SUPER SPEED
While wearing his uniform, Captain Britain is capable of moving at speeds that exceed the limits of any normal human.

SUPER STAMINA
Brian Braddock's human-Otherworldian hybrid musculature produces considerably less fatigue toxins during physical activity than the musculature of a normal human. At his peak, he can exert himself physically for about 24 hours before the build up of fatigue toxins in his blood begins to impair him.

SUPER STRENGTH

While wearing his uniform, Captain Britain's strength is increased to high superhuman levels. At his peak, he is able to lift approximately 90 metric tons. Without the suit, the residual interdimensional energies in his body enable him to lift approximately 10 metric tons.

Skills

DRIVING
Brian Braddock is an excellent driver, able to operate cars, motorcycles, and boats, with equal skill. And while he gained his abilities as a result of being driven off the road, he was not driven off the road due to his driving ability. It was a combination of the motorcycle he drove, the vehicle that was chasing him, and above all, the road conditions, which were far less than ideal.

ENGINEERING
Brian Braddock is working on his Master's of Engineering from Empire State University in New York. He already had a background in Physics, having earned his Bachelor's of Physics from Thames University in London, so it seemed like a natural extension, as engineering is the creative application of empirical evidence, mathematical methods, and science to construction, design, innovation, maintenance, and operation of devices, machines, materials, organizations, processes, structures, and systems.

INTEGRITY
Anson Dorrance once said that "the vision of a champion is someone who is bent over, drenched in sweat, at the point of exhaustion, when no one else is watching." Similarly, integrity is doing the right thing over what is fun, fast, or easy; choosing courage over comfort; and above all else, doing it when no one else is watching.

LEADERSHIP
Brian is not what most would call a born leader. He has too much humility for that. But while it may not come naturally to him, he has developed everything he needs to become a charismatic and compelling leader. If not for one obvious problem, he would be a prime contender if Steve Rogers had to choose a new Captain America. They are remarkably similar on so many levels, each one was chosen by others to represent their countries, and each one strives to represent their countries by upholding the ideals those countries stand for, without overlooking the mistakes they sometimes make.

PHYSICS
Brian Braddock earned his Bachelor's of Physics from Thames University in London, and briefly worked at the Darkmoor Energy Research Centre. Physics intersects with many interdisciplinary areas of research in an effort to understand how the universe behaves through matter, motion, space, time, energy, and force.

SCIENCE

Brian Braddock is a genius who has dedicated most of his life to the pursuit of scientific advancement. He specializes in physics and engineering, but he understands other fundamental sciences, such as biology and chemistry. He may not act like it, his life has largely led him down a different path, but in his heart, he is a scientist.

APPEARANCE
Brian is 198 cm tall, and weighs 117 kg, with less than 6% of it being body fat. He has thick blond hair, with a natural wave to it. And he has piercing blue eyes. If all of this weren't enough, he is also quite handsome, wealthy, which enables him to dress well, and an English nobleman. He's also a doctorate candidate, and a superhero. He's intelligent, witty, charismatic, and has gravitas. Simply put, he is "yummy". Or to put it another way, men want to be him, and women want to be with him.

BRADDOCK CASTLE
In 1744, then Major Edward Braddock, purchased land in Caernarvon, Avalon, Blüdhaven. Braddock wanted to build a home worthy of Europe - with much influence from his mother, who favoured the Tudor style. Granite for the home was quarried in Bergen County. Italian marble lines the breakfast room. The drawing room is paneled in Scandinavian pine. And the grounds were turned into a series of botanical gardens. In 1990, it was purchased by Brian's father, James Sr. Three decades later, it was left specifically to Brian. Curiously, it was not shared with his sister Betsy and his brother Jamie.

BRADDOCK INDUSTRIES
Before his descent into madness, Brian's older brother Jamie was a shrewd businessman, turning Braddock Industries from a respectable, but middling technology firm, into one that is regularly counted among the top twenty in the world. It may not be Wayne Enterprises, or even da Costa International, but Braddock Industries assures the financial security of Brian, Betsy, and even Jamie, whom each have a 17% stake. Due to Jamie's ongoing medical issues, Brian effectively has control of Jamie's 17, giving him a total of 34%.

BRADDOCK LIGHTHOUSE
The Braddock Lighthouse in Hale, Halton, Cheshire, on the River Mersey, near Runcorn, serves two purposes. The first is as a navigational aid for maritime pilots. The second is as a dimensional nexus, connecting the multiverse. It is a source of immense magical power, which can be tapped into by users such as Merlin. Brian has never lived there, and rarely visits, but he has been made aware of its significance. It is always guarded by a member of the Captain Britain Corps. Earth-1999 is fortunate to have four such members.

BRADDOCK MANOR
Braddock Manor is a large, early 17th-century country house outside Maldon, Maldon District, Essex. Once a prodigy house, a palace in all but name, and renowned as one of the finest Jacobean houses in England, Braddock Manor is now one-third of its original size, but still large, with much to enjoy in its architectural features and varied collections. The house shares some seminaries with Audley End House. It is currently in the stewardship of Brian Braddock, owing to his older brother Jamie Braddock's ongoing medical issues. Its permanent staff include Michael "Mick" Jeeves, their live-in valet, and the Mastermind computer, an artificial intelligence housed in the basement laboratory.

CAPTAIN BRITAIN CORPS
The Captain Britain Corps are a group of interdimensional superheroes, and are essentially, alternate dimension versions of Captain Britain, most often Briand Braddock. While this is the norm, it is not absolute. Alysande Stuart, the Captain Britain of Earth-9809, better known as Caledonia; Kelsey Leigh, the Captain Britain of Earth-626, better known as Lionheart; and Linda McQuillan, the Captain Britain of Earth-238, better known as Captain U.K., are three examples of this, and all three have come to reside on Earth-1999 alongside Brian. Founded by Merlin, the Corps' primary duty is to guard the Multiverse. Each member protected his or her reality based out of their dimensional equivalent of Britain, and is powered by the friction between dimensions.

CAR
Brian has a 2026 Jaguar F-Type convertible. It utilizes an all-aluminum chassis, assembled with flush rivets and glue. Sound and vibration insulation is provided by the addition of a special underbody tray and engine mounts, and a double bulkhead between the engine bay and passenger compartment. The convertible roof is an electrically operated retractable fabric piece. By eschewing metal, it can keep the car's centre of gravity low, while a Thinsulate layer means thermal and sound insulation is akin to a solid roof. Unlike his motorcycle, which is painted in the colours of the British flag, his car is Ethereal Silver with a gloss finish.

CELEBRITY
Brian Braddock is a celebrity, but mercifully, a fairly minor one. He, along with his siblings, have a controlling interest in Braddock Industries. His father was a member of the House of Lords. His brother Jamie was a Formula 1 driver. His sister Betsy is a model, among other things. By comparison, he has lived a life of blissful anonymity, but he is still wealthy, handsome, athletic, a member of the peerage, and has seen articles published in scientific journals.

DARKMOOR ENERGY RESEARCH CENTRE
The Darkmoor Energy Research Centre, in a remote part of northern England, was founded in 1976. As a physics student, Brian briefly worked there, serving under Dr. Hugo Travis, the head of research. Despite a squad of former S.A.S. (secret army service) providing security, the centre came under attack, and Brian had to seek help on his motorcycle. This sequence of events led to him becoming Captain Britain. He knows the facility well, and still has friends there.

EMPIRE STATE UNIVERSITY
Brian Braddock attends Empire State University in Manhattan, and is currently working on his Masters of Engineering. He knows that university well, many of its professors, and his fellow classmates.

HELLFIRE CLUB
Sir James Braddock, M.D. was the Black Bishop of the London branch of the Hellfire Club. As such, Brian, Jamie, an Betsy are eligible to claim the position, though any one of them wishing to do so may and likely would face competition for it. This also affords him membership in the Hellfire Club at large. Although it would take some effort to join another branch's Inner Circle, his status as a legacy gives him a slight advantage.

MERLIN
Merlin was born on an alternate Earth as a member of a race of immortal, powerful beings. He created Braddock Lighthouse on Earth-1999, as well as another on every Earth in the Omniverse. From Otherworld, he safeguards all universes in existence as the Omniversal Guardian. He founded the Captain Britain Corps, and arranged for the birth of Jamie, Brian, and Betsy Braddock, as their father, Sir James, was sent there to father them. Over the years, he has manipulated Brian into becoming a stronger and wiser hero.

MICHAEL JEEVES
Michael "Mick" Jeeves is the Braddock Family's highly competent valet. He is not a butler, as a butler manages other servants and is ultimately responsible for a household. A valet acts alone, and usually serves an individual. With Brian and Betsy spending the majority of their time across the Atlantic, Mick tends to Jamie Braddock as best he can, given the eldest Braddock's mental condition.

MOTORCYCLE
Brian has a 2026 Suzui Hayabusa. The 1340 cc, four-stroke, four-cylinder, liquid-cooled, D.O.H.C., 16 vale engine, motorcycle has a top speed of 397 km/h. It is predominantly painted white, with red and blue accents, in an artistic version of the Union Jack, the flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It can produce 147 kw at 6750 rpm, and has a 6 speed transmission system with constant mesh. He has a matching helmet. This motorcycle is only worn as Brian Braddock, and never used by his alter ego, Captain Britain.

OTHERWORLD
Brian does not know it yet, but he is half-Otherworldian. He is also an heir to the throne of Otherworld, as his father, Sir James Braddock, M.D. on Earth-1999, was in fact King James of Otherworld. He has friends and allies he has not met. Some look out for him, like Merlin and Roma. Others will simply treat him better when they meet him, especially as he is the spitting image of his father.

PSYLOCKE
Elizabeth "Betsy" Braddock is Brian's fraternal twin, born a mere three seconds after him. Whereas Brian was studious, Betsy was adventurous. After school, she cycled through a variety of careers, from pilot, to fashion model, to government agent, and now she's a ninja... and Japanese. It's complicated. Her outward appearance may have changed, but inside, she's still the girl he grew up with. She's still his little sister, a fact he loves to remind her of.

ROMA
As the Lady of the Northern Skies, Roma assists her father Merlin in the empowering of the members of the Captain Britain Corps. She was there the night that Brian Braddock was chosen to become Earth-1999's Captain Britain, and has watched over him ever since. Besides bequeathing him with great physical strength, Roma also gave him a quarterstaff. Merlin later replaced it with the Star Sceptre, which itself was later merged with his uniform. She resides in another dimension called Otherworld, operating out of the Starlight Citadel.

THAMES UNIVERSITY
Brian Braddock attended Thames University in London, earning his Bachelors of Physics. He knows that university well, many of its professors, and even struck up a friendship with the groundskeeper. A few of his former classmates may still be attending as they work on their masters or doctorates.

UNIFORM
Captain Britain's uniform was originally linked to the Amulet of Right, which Brian wore around his neck. Since then, his uniform has undergone numerous enhancements. The Star Sceptre, which replaced his earlier quarterstaff, was incorporated into the uniform, costing him a tangible weapon, but freeing up his hand, and enabling him to fly with or without the weapon. His uniform is capable of harnessing and storing interdimensional energies, such as those that permeate Braddock Lighthouse in Hale, Hatton, Cheshire, or the Hellmouth in Sunnydale, Avalon, Blüdhaven. In this way, it acts as a battery, and enables him to operate for extended periods, but not indefinitely, when away from these energies.

WATCHERS COUNCIL
Captain Britain has developed a good rapport and solid working relationship with the Watchers Council, who are devoted to tracking, sometimes combating, and preventing supernatural entities from becoming public knowledge. They have no desire to hide the truth; in point of fact, they are preserving it, while simultaneously enabling billions of people to lead ordinary lives. Were he not called for a higher purpose, Brian Braddock might have become a Watcher himself.

WEALTH

Brian Braddock is the younger brother of Lord Jamie Braddock, as his brother gets to keep his title despite his mental issues. He and his siblings have a controlling interest in Braddock Industries. He owns Braddock Castle, and shares Braddock Manor and Braddock Lighthouse with his siblings. He has a loft in London. Money is not an issue for him, nor will it ever be. Still, money cannot buy you happiness, but it can help.

Weaknesses

CONFIDENCE
Although he has yet to be made aware of this, Brian's abilities are partially reliant upon his level of confidence. In social situations, Brian has a natural inclination for shyness, but it is something he has managed to overcome through time and effort. He had a rocky beginning to his career as a superhero, but hasn't had confidence issues since. But confidence is a funny thing. You can be confident every day, right up until something happens, and you are suddenly not. Issues in his personal life, or in his professional, can affect his ability to harness and utilize interdimensional energies. He must be in a good place, psychologically, in order to be Captain Britain.

FOREIGNER
Brian Braddock is a stranger in a strange land. People drive on the wrong side of the road. They do not seem to understand the fine art of queueing. No one seems to appreciate a backhanded compliment. They seem to be devoid of tact and subtly. And they are incredibly inconsistent with which letters they will pronounce. It can be quite frustrating. He may not ever fully adapt, but he is trying. The empty platitudes, especially in the service industry, like "have a nice day" being used as a passive-aggressive substitute for "good bye", are particularly infuriating and entirely alien to him.

GASES
Captain Britain's abilities include a force field. This force might be enough to deflect physical attacks, but it offers no protection against airborne issues. Any gas that might attack his body through his nose, mouth, eyes, or skin has free reign, as the force field does not protect him against them, and those parts of his body are exposed by his uniform.

IMPETUOUS
Brian is often the smartest person in the room, but he has a habit of leaping before he looks. His abilities have made him confident, possibly overconfident. He is a superhuman in almost every way. While these abilities are truly great, they come at the price. He is not invincible, nor is he infallible. He is, beneath the mask, just a man, trying to do his best. And those who burn brightest, often burn the shortest. One of these days, his impetuousness is going to come back to haunt him. It certainly has in his personal life.

INTERDIMENSIONAL ENERGIES
Captain Britain's powers are fueled by interdimensional energies, such as those that permeate Braddock Lighthouse in Hale, Hatton, Cheshire, and the Hellmouth, in Sunnydale, Avalon, Blüdhaven. His uniform acts to harness and store these energies, but without them, he is an ordinary human being. He can operate for prolonged periods of time away from these energies, but eventually, his suit will deplete its reserves, and he will become an ordinary human being.

JAMIE BRADDOCK
Jamie Braddock is the first born child of Sir James Braddock, M.D., and his wife, Elizabeth. Ten years the senior of Brian and Betsy, he was a financial genius who brought Braddock Industries to previously unseen heights. He also had a highly successful stint as a Formula 1 driver. But then he developed a gambling addiction, which led him in a downward spiral resulting in a homeopathic "healer" turning him insane. These "treatments" also awoke his latent mutancy. He can manipulate reality on the quantum level. Try as he may, Brian cannot think of a worse combination than an insane family member with reality warping powers, and Brian is highly imaginative.

MERLIN
Brian Braddock is under instructions by no less than the wizard Merlin, yes, that Merlin, to remain close to the Hellmouth in Sunnydale, Avalon, Blüdhaven, more than 5,600 km from home. Blüdhaven was not on his vacation wish list, it wasn't even in the top 100. And this is hardly the first time that Merlin has interfered in his life. Sometimes, he acts in mysterious ways, other times he's blunt and direct. In either case, he's an annoying thorn in Brian's side. In a way, Brian is Jean-Luc Picard to Merlin's Q from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Merlin is continually evasive regarding his true motivations, and Brian can't help but feel that there is a Machiavellian streak to the Omniversal Guardian's efforts.

PSYLOCKE
Betsy can take care of herself better than almost anyone Brian knows. He has no need to worry about her, and yet still, he worries. She is twin, fraternal, and now in a different body, but still his twin. They have a bond that cannot be broken. And with what happened to Jamie Braddock, she is in effect, his only living relative. He loves her. He wants to protect her. And if anyone wanted to get under his skin, she would be an obvious target. Not an easy one, but an obvious one.

SECRET IDENTITY
Brian Braddock wishes to remain anonymous for now. Someday, he may reveal his identity to the public, but not today. He could be deported. Someone might try to get to him through Betsy, Jamie, his valet Mick, or other people he cares about. His identity becoming public would place everyone he comes into contact with in jeopardy, and it is not a risk he is currently willing to take. Thus he vigorously tries to protect his identity, which itself can be exploited under the right circumstances.

SOCIALLY INEPT
Brian Braddock is at the same time, socially adept, and socially inept. On the one hand, he attended boarding school, and knows a great deal about how to behave among the upper class. He was never truly accepted, as his family was comparatively poor in those days. On the other hand, he rarely interacts with people he previously would refer to as his peers. As such, he never quite learned how to behave among the commoners. He often struggled with British commoners, and Americans are even harder for him to understand.

TEMPER
Brian has a temper, plain and simple. He can be quick to anger. And when he gets angry, he makes mistakes. Fortunately, socially and as Captain Britain, he can usually overcome those mistakes. But that still leaves plenty of room for when he can't overcome these self-imposed difficulties. If he could just keep his head, he'd be more successful as Captain Britain, and as Brian Braddock.

UNIFORM

Captain Britain's uniform grants him his abilities. Without it, he would be an ordinary human being. Or at least that's his current understanding. In actuality, he is capable of harnessing these energies on his own, he just hasn't learned to do that yet, nor is he aware he has the potential to learn it.
