Profile

Grant Ward is a man with a troubled past and a promising future. He doesn't talk much about his past, though it can be surmised that he comes from some level of abuse. It would at least explain the obvious nightmares. Either way, he has served in SHIELD since he was twenty one, and has been an efficient agent. He has risen to the level of trust and skill that he is now often training other agents in both field exercises and in combat. A private man, he has the possibility to be a good friend once you really get to know him..

Description:

This handsome man has an easy way about him. He stands a finely muscled 6', with wide shoulders and an infectious smile. His eyes are brown, like his hair. His hair is cut short, but not to military length, and is often lightly gelled. He is handsome in a classical sense, with a strong jaw, intense eyes and an easy smile.

The man is clearly in excellent shape, and he tends towards clothes that fit in when not on-duty. His clothing tends to be fairly middle-class and blue-collar. Jeans, boots, t-shirts and flannel, along with baseball caps. He vanishes into a crowd in such. When working he tends towards black suits with ties. A spook.

History

History:

Grant Douglas Ward grew up in Massachusetts and had a difficult childhood. He had an abusive older brother who would frequently force Ward to beat up his younger brother. His parents were even worse. Ward also had a sister with whom he no longer has contact. An incident in particular that had a profound effect on Ward was when his older brother threw his younger brother into a well and would not allow Ward to rescue him. Ward eventually managed to do it without his brother knowing.

In 1999, Ward went AWOL from the military academy to which he had been sent, stole a car, drove over 1000 miles home, and set fire to his parents' home in a furious rage. Unknown to Ward, his older brother Christian was inside and came close to burning to death in the fire. Christian survived but had Ward arrested by the police and pushed for the courts to try Grant as an adult to get the maximum punishment against him.

While being detained at a juvenile detention center, Ward was unexpectedly visited by S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent John Garrett, who offered him a choice - leave with Garrett now and be taught the skills needed to survive, or face prison, where his family was pushing for Ward to get the maximum sentence for his crime. When Ward asked why he should trust Garrett, Garrett responded by telling him to never to trust anyone, especially not him. Ward agreed, and Garrett's men broke him out of prison.

Ward was driven into the middle of a forest by John Garrett who shot ducks and reassured him that his brother and the rest of his family were happy to be rid of him and therefore the police would not be looking for him. While Ward continued to ask questions about S.H.I.E.L.D., Garrett revealed that he would be leaving him there with just Buddy, telling him that from now on he would have to survive on his own, hunting for his food and building a place to sleep.

Garrett promised to return within a couple of months, but he instead left Ward for six months. Although Ward suffered during the first few weeks due to the loneliness and heavy rain, he soon managed to raid nearby cabins, build his own camp and survive with ease. By the time Garrett returned he was impressed by Ward's efforts and he claimed that he could not be prouder. Garrett then pulled a gun and aimed it at Ward, before firing it at nearby cans with incredible accuracy, promising to teach him Ward to shoot and that within a few months he would be able to shoot even better than he could.

For five years John Garrett subjected Ward to a number of grueling survival tests in the Wyoming wilderness, eventually molding him into a cold, driven survivalist with the skills he needed. While eating in their campsite, Garrett told Ward the story of how he had gained his many cybernetic enhancements when he had been left to die. Garrett eventually revealed to Ward that he was not loyal to S.H.I.E.L.D., but to HYDRA who were working within the organization.

By this point Ward followed Garrett's many orders without question or hesitation, so he agreed without question to join HYDRA and continue serving with from within S.H.I.E.L.D. if he were accepted into the organization. They continued Ward's weapons training as they went out to hunt deer at incredible range, sending Buddy out to collect the dead deer once Ward had killed it with his sniper rifle. While Buddy ran out to collect the corpse ready to be cooked for their dinner, Ward jokingly commented that the body was so far out that it would take the dog a while to find it and bring it back to them.

Garrett happily revealed to Ward that he had just been accepted into S.H.I.E.L.D.'s operations division and would be leaving immediately. When Ward went to thank Garrett for everything he had done for him, he was told not to thank him, as Garrett believed that he had done it all himself. Ward was told that the next few years would undoubtedly be very tough for him, as working for HYDRA within S.H.I.E.L.D. meant that he could not ever get attached to anyone or anything as he would have to be prepared to betray them at a moments notice, but Ward agreed to this prospect without question.

As they prepared to pack up the camp at leave for the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy, Garrett made Ward prove his emotional detachment by ordering him to kill his loyal dog Buddy. When Ward hesitated, Garrett questioned if this was a weakness in him, but Ward insisted that it was not. While Garrett was gone, Ward aimed his pistol at Buddy, but could not pull the trigger, instead firing it upwards causing Buddy to run. However Ward's loyalty to Garrett forced him to take his sniper rifle and he killed Buddy with a single shot as the dog ran through the forest, giving Ward an emotional detachment.

About five years outside the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy, Ward was posed for sixteen months as a Russian attaché at the embassy in Warsaw, Poland. After proving his worth, Ward became a full-fledged agent, rising through the ranks under Garrett's tutelage and supervision. Deputy Director Maria Hill gave Ward top marks in combat and the highest espionage rating since Natasha Romanoff, giving him low marks only in his people skills. He continues in this role to this day, serving as a Level 7 Special Agent, and a Hydra sleeper.

Personality

Personality:

Grant Ward is...complicated. He is a strong soldier and a skilled agent, and whoever has his loyalty has it to the bone. He can be selfish sometimes, but never a coward. When somebody earns his ire it takes a lot of work to make it go away, and he sometimes makes snap judgements on people that it takes awhile to get rid of.

Abilities

Physical Specimen:
Grant is not superhuman. However, he is in exceptional shape. He can stay up longer, run faster, punch harder. He is Olympic level, or damn near it, in most physical acts.

Willpower:

Grant can be put through Hell and emerge unscathed. He can keep fighting while holding his guts in with one hand. He can joke his way through torture. In addition to all of this, his mind is incredibly hard to crack. He can fool lie detectors or truth serums, and it is almost impossible to read his mind past surface thoughts, which he is trained in.

Skills

Close Combat:
He is an expert in hand-to-hand combat, receiving top marks in all forms of combat at the SHIELD Academy.

Firearms:
He can handle a sniper rifle as easily as a submachine gun. He is a soldier, and a deadly efficient one at that. He often handles sniper-related missions when needed, due to his patience and aim. He also has good speed and aim with most other firearms.

Larceny:
He can pick locks and pockets like an expert thief. This includes tumber locks, master safes, and computer locks. He can do sleight of hand and knows distraction techniques as well. He can move with incredible stealth, to aid him in all of these things, and is capable of standing still for hours on end.

Multilingual:
He speaks a number of languages quite fluently, and can even fake accents. English, French, German, Russian, Arabic, Afrikaans, Swiss, Japanese and Spanish are his most fluent.

Piloting:
Ward is extremely skilled with a great many variety of vehicles, including but not limited to, cars, motorcycles, tanks, MTVs, Helicopters, and jets.

Subterfuge:
Grant can lie for days. He is a master of slipping into undercover roles. He is skilled with disguises, and with the right clothes and prosthetics he can pretend to be someone even to a person close to the target. He can fool lie detectors, and as mentioned in Willpower, beat truth serum. According to Deputy Director Maria Hill, Ward has the highest espionage marks since Natasha Romanoff.

Survival:
Grant can survive in almost any wilderness environment indefinatly. If dropped off in a wild environment with nothing, he can acquire tools to survive, along with shelter, food, and anything else he needs. He has survived in the wild for months on his own. Sometimes he goes on extended camping trips when he is off-duty to enjoy the isolation.

Tactics:

He is deadly over comms, just like he is in person. He can plan ops when the need arises, and he knows how to plan ambushes, rescues, and all the other mission types. He is very good at it, but prefers being in the field.

Resources

Equipment:
Being an Agent of SHIELD, Grant has plenty of gear. From various firearms and melee weapons to different types of body armor, to tracers, flares, chemicals and such. All kinds of the things you see in spy movies and whatnot.

Hideouts:
Even aside from his normal home and SHIELD safehouses, Grant has a number of personal boltholes and safehouses across the world. Tiny apartment in Mexico City, to a rented room in Calcutta.

Shield:

Grant is an agent of SHIELD, and a respected one at that. This comes with the weight of the badge, and he can investigate people and run cases. he can wire-tap and trace and do all kinds of shady spy stuff. He also has other Agents to call upon, and everything else such a position brings.

Weaknesses

Double Agent?:
Ward is a member of Hydra, but his first loyalty is not to the group but rather to Garrett.

Enemies:
Either as an Agent of SHIELD or from his own personal life, Grant has made enemies. There are people who would certainly not mind seeing him taken down a peg or two...

Shades of Grey:

Ward is willing to do things a lot of other Agents are not. He will coldly kill a person if it will further the goals of his organization.
