Profile

Originally meant to be a reservist Lantern to replace Hal when he was not available for his sector, John impressed the Guardians of the Universe during his initial missions, and was called to Oa for extensive mentorship across the galaxy.

After being away from Earth for years, John has come back to Sector 2814 as it's primary Green Lantern, with Hal busy elsewhere. He's also notable for being the only human Green Lantern who does not hide his identity.

Description:

A tall and athletic man in his early thirties of African American descent, John Stewart is shaved bald, the only indications of natural hair are his eyebrows; black. He has a professional air about him and moves with a quiet confidence in or out of the Green Lantern uniform he wears.

History

History:

A man born of a poor family and a bad neighborhood, John was a frequent troublemaker. With his mother being a community organizer, it was a bit of a struggle initially. Their relationship strained further when John decided to enlist in the Marine Corps to pay his way towards an architecture degree, his mother was against it... but he went through with it anyway.

Joining the Corps turned out to help John have a better understanding of his own potential. Proving to be an excellent sniper and quickly being promoted to Sergeant over the course of his time in the Corps. Eventually, he received an honorable discharge, and completed his degree.

It was a few months later that a Power Ring chose him as the Guardians were finding a partner for Hal... and despite some initial friction over John's aggression, Hal came to respect the reservist Lantern.

However, his time as Hal's partner got him recognized by the Guardians of the Universe, and he was called to Oa to train with more senior mentors.

In the years since, he has come into his potential, and has become a respected leader by the rest of the Green Lanterns, recognized for his keen tactical brilliance and the strength of his will, and is unique among the Lanterns as having some of the most complicated constructs of any Green Lantern, due to his keen architectural expertise.

Now, John is back on Earth, having been reassigned as the full Green Lantern for Earth's sector.

Personality

Personality:

A man of greys, aggression, and orderliness. He has no qualms about using dirty tactics to get a job done, his strict nature refusing to allow him to lower himself to the Punisher's standards, despite his time in the marine corps. If there is a chance at rehabilitation, he will take it... though he isn't above killing if the perpetrator is obviously completely deranged and there's no way to contain him. He's a man who uses the tools at hand to do the job, not relying solely on the Power Ring to be a Green Lantern. He joined the marine corps both to serve his country and to pay his way through college... developing a healthy respect for the gun and the power it gave a person. He has since brought those lessons to the Green Lanterns and took them to heart. He is a firm believer in 'the order of nature' over 'the sanctity of life', which can make him butt heads with the more 'righteous superheroes and members of the Green Lanterns.

Abilities

Power Battery:
The Power Ring must be recharged every twenty four hours... or when the power runs out in it. This device is how John does it. It takes the form of a Lantern that he keeps invisible at his loft until he needs it.

Power Ring:
Using his willpower, this weapon is what makes a Green Lantern, a Green Lantern. It is capable of a wide variety of useful utilities and attacks, including:

Electromagnetic Scanning: Rings have a wide range of detection abilities based on the imagination of the user. If one can conceive of it, it can probably detect it. Magical effects like clairvoyance seem to be beyond the scope of the rings. Most normal electromagnetic phenomena are within the range of the rings, including radio, television, infrared, ultraviolet, and high frequency band communications.

Emergency Beacon: A Lantern in distress can use their power ring as an emergency beacon. The alert can be directed to a Lantern's neighbouring sector, or it can be a Corps-wide alert.

Energy Absorption: A ring can absorb and store most other energies. Doings o does not replenish the normal store of energy the ring has. A ring that needs recharging, but contained a store of electricity, could only discharge that electricity, for example.

Energy Conduit: The ring uses Green energy supplied by an Oan Green Power Battery. These energies are an infallible connection to the universe. A power ring is possibly one of the most powerful weapons in the known universe: it has the ability to affect and use fundamental forces of the known universe, including electromagnetic energies such as gravity, radiation, heat, light, and powerful blasts of concussive force. A ring can also create fields of force formed from the users' will. The limitations of such use are the skill, knowledge, and imagination of the user.

Energy Constructs: The primary function of the Power Ring is to provide a weapon capable of transforming the wearer's thoughts into physical constructs through the wearer's strength of will. A Lantern can create any particular items or construct that they can imagine as long as they have the energy necessary to generate it into existence. The constructs are made out of Oan energy, which is a tangible form of pure Willpower, and they exist only as long as a Lantern is fuelling it with their Willpower. Items created by the rings are not indestructible, and are only as powerful as the Willpower of John himself. in the case of John, his constructs are some of the most complicated in the Green Lantern Corps... and are NEVER hollow.

Energy Projection: A ring can be used to fire blasts of Green energy or create weapons such as projectiles of them. The ring can project beams of force powered by the will of the user. The weapons power is more an indication of the Willpower of the user.

Energy Twin: The power ring allows the wearer to create an "energy twin" of them that can travel at far greater speeds than that of the ring wielder's physical form. While the energy twin is active, the ring wielder remains motionless, as their force is needed to guide the energy twin. The energy twin cannot alter its surroundings, and may only be perceived by the Guardians or another ring wielder as aGreen ghostlike image. Any knowledge gained by the energy twin is transferred back to the ring wielder's physical form upon re-contact with the body. The Guardians frequently use energy twins as a means of contacting a Lantern. As a rule, a ring wielder cannot create actual, independent duplicates of them, as the power ring cannot create life.

Environmental Playback: Upon request, the power ring can recreate a holographic environment based on data in its memory banks. The ring wielder can observe events in a ghostlike state, but the ring wielder cannot alter the outcome of the playback. All objects in the playback will appear in the full spectrum of colors, regardless of the wielder's level of expertise creating simulacrums. The power ring will automatically end the playback if outside interference warrants the ring wielder's undivided attention.

Power Ring 2:
Flight: By the manipulation of anti-gravitons and directed molecular movement, the ring allows the user to fly at incredible speeds. In atmosphere, a Lantern has been known to fly as fast as Mach 10 in an atmosphere by creating an aerodynamic envelope around their body. When towing others, usually within a bubble, their speed is limited to just over twice the speed of sound, or 700 m / s. In space, a Lantern's speed can be significantly greater and has been known to approach 80% of light speed in normal space. In atmospheres, air friction is not a hindrance, since heat is either absorbed or reflected by the ring's field.

Force-Field Generation: The ring can create various force-fields of various sizes and shapes to protect the wearer and others around the user. With the cosmic scope of a Lantern's abilities, it is only natural that the power ring is designed for operation in space. The ring creates a force-field around the wearer, protecting the user from the hazards of the void, including filtration of stellar radiation and microscopic particulate matter, which would ordinarily be fatal should the space debris strike the ring wielder at high speeds. An atmosphere appropriate to the ring wielder's biology is created inside the force-field, body temperature is maintained, and waste products are removed. Gravitational stresses which could cause injury are stabilized for the ring wielder.

Galactic Encyclopedia: The rings worn by the Corps function as references for their users. Having vast knowledge to draw upon, each ring functions as a ready reference on most peoples, stellar events, and conditions that may have been seen by other rings. The rings also serve as a repository of adventures had by the Lanterns and these mission reports are stored in the Prime Battery for review and training.

Homing Beacon: A homing beacon in the power ring can lead one Lantern to another. The power ring can be ordered to disguise itself to elude power ring wielding trackers. Most often ring wielders will allow the beacon to signal their location to others.

Invisibility and Light Refraction: A ring wielder can render themselves invisible by willing the ring to bend light waves around them, as well as that of the power ring. Presumably, a similar action allows an experienced ring wielder to create objects of colours other than that of their ring. As the ring wielder's experience grows, they are able to create power ring illusions of people and objects. It can be assumed the ring wielder would not risk the extra time and effort to create other colours in a combat situation.

Jump Points and Hyperspace: The power ring enables its wearer to utilise jumpgate technology to punch through real space in order to navigate through the alternate reality of hyperspace, cutting down travel times from years, even decades, to hours or days. Experienced ring wielders can generate their own jump points.

Limited Cellular Regeneration: The ring has a limited ability to heal physical injuries. Lantern's can use the ring to repair minor injuries in them or others. If a ring wielder actually has personal medical knowledge, they would be able to cure a wider variety of dysfunctions, beyond normal physical injuries.

Material Alteration: The Lantern's uniform is not made out of fabric. It is created by the Power Ring whenever the wearer wills to wear it. It automatically appears over the wearer's normal clothing, and vanishes when the wearer wills to return to their civilian attire. Most Lanterns wear similar uniforms that are programmed into the ring by default. However, each Lantern is able to adjust their uniform to fit their own needs, personalities and whims. John's uniform is rather standard, with some marine corps touches to it.

Power Ring 3:
Mind Alteration: Though the ethics of mind tampering may be debatable, sometimes it is necessary. As the power ring relies on thought and Will to operate, mind tampering is not impossible. The difficulty lies in properly applying the power. There lies a risk of catastrophic damage to the mind should mistakes be made. A ring wielder can use the power ring to erase portions of an individual's memories. Lanterns have used mind techniques as part of training. New recruits may be subjected to mind scans by other Lanterns or the Guardians of the Universe. They are taught to build mental defences to protect themselves from psionic attack. The power ring can also be used to beam information from the ring wielder to another being. Lanterns have used this technique to share information regarding their enemies during combat situations.

Note: Mind alteration for anything other than to share information requires staff approval.

Phasing: The Power Ring allows the wearer to pass through certain solid objects, such as walls. Which objects that are not penetrable are not known, but it may depend upon the strength of the wearer's will, and the density of the object's molecular structure.

Preset Conditions: Commands can be stored in the ring to be executed at a later date, even if the bearer is not wearing the ring.

Search Probes: A user is capable of sending probes through their Power Ring that are tasked with locating specific targets or individuals.

Security Protocol: The rings can be programmed. They are coded to the wearer to make them unusable if stolen.

Thought Relay: Power Rings can create telepathic links between the ring wielder and any sentient being in the vicinity.

Time Travel: Time travel is possible with the power ring, though the further forward in time a ring wielder travels, the more Willpower it needs.

Note: Time travel requires staff approval.

Universal Translator: The power ring acts a universal translator.

Compassion Absorption: Similar to other lanterns natural "purge" of certain power rings, Green Lantern Power Rings have the ability to absorb energy of Indigo Lantern's. This is made possible by the inherent subversion of their will.

Hope Symbiosis: When a Green Lantern Power Ring is in the presence of a Blue Lantern Power Ring, both rings gain a power boost.

Kryptonian Harming: Similar to how the energy from a Yellow Power Ring can be used to charge the powers of a Kryptonian, the light of a Green Power Ring can be used to create artificial Kryptonite energy to harm a Kryptonian or Daxamite.

Willpower:

Like most Green Lanterns, John was chosen for his willpower and strength of character, and has incredible willpower to call on. Like Hal, he can shrug off obstacles that would have most humans begging for mercy.

Skills

Architect:
John has completed an Earth university based degree on designing buildings. His constructs are never simply 'hollow' due to this. His mindset is always filling in the details, right down to the bolts.

Fitness:
John reached a near peak human condition in his time in the marines, and has kept up that lifestyle and training enough to keep himself well above average... though he's nowhere near Batman or the Punisher these days.

Galactic Knowledge:
During his time training and being mentored out among the galaxy, John encountered many hundreds of different races and cultures, and learned a lot from his ring as he went. He's no scholar, but he's got a solid foundation of understanding of the Galactic Community.

Leadership:
Initially brought to the surface in the Marine Corps, his time in the Green Lanterns has trained his potential as a leader into focus. He is a well respected leader in the Corps, though if he has a choice about it, he prefers to follow others.

Military Training:
As a member of the marine corps, John was a quick learner and a dedicated sniper at the tail end of his service. As such, he is well versed with most firearms, and is an excellent sniper... and has kept at it with the firing range. In fact, one of his favorite constructs is a custom sniper rifle.

Tactician:

From his time in the marine corps, John has honed this instinct well. In the Green Lantern Corps, he's been exposed to all kinds of alien cultures and militaries, and is one of the best tacticians and strategists in the Green Lanterns, having directed campaigns and policing actions in the years since he left Earth.

Resources

Green Lantern Corps:
As an officer in the Green Lantern Corps, John can call upon the assistance of fellow Green Lanterns, the resources of the Corps and the Guardians of the Universe, and Oa itself, when necessary.

Justice League:
John is a reserve member of the League from his time as Hal's partner.

Marine Corps:
As an honorably discharged Sergeant of the US marine Corps, John has made a few friends from those days and keeps in light contact with them.

Pension:

John has a healthy pension from his marine corp days, and uses it to support his loft and as spending money when he's on Earth. One day, he may need to get a job as an actual Architect... but that day is not here yet.

Weaknesses

Grey Morality:
John is one of the few Green Lanterns willing to resort to things like blackmail and extortion if it's in the service of a greater good. Sometimes, you make due with the tools you have on hand.

Orderly:
John firmly believes in heirarchy, in order, in the structure of society. Without it, chaos would consume the galaxy. Even if he believes in fighting dirty for the greater good, ultimately, he works to keep the lynchpins of culture intact.

Ring Flaws:

The Power Ring has a number of issues with it.

Emotion Dependency: Should the user's feelings fall too far out of sync with will, then the ring's effectiveness can drop significantly.

Recharge Protocol: The rings need to be charged after a period of 20 hours and 47 minutes according to Earth Standard Time, regardless of how often it was used.

Mental Instability Protocol: Drug use, neural interference, vertigo, or other forms of mental incapacitation can render the wearer unable to use their ring.

Rage Vulnerability: The red light of rage can corrupt the aura of a Green Lantern, draining their ring of power. This is dependent on the Green Lantern's ability to "understand", "accept", and "control" their rage.

Yellow Impurity: The yellow light of fear can corrupt the aura of a Green Lantern, draining their ring of power. This is dependent on the Green Lantern's ability to "understand", "accept", and "control" their fear.
