Description:

Becky is slender, graceful, and fit. Her hair is moderately short, but rather wild. She envies the shapely figures of many of the other female supers, but barely manages passably pretty. Cute could be used to describe her, but preferably not to her face (she does not like the term).

History

History:

Being born a middle child in a large family is going to have an impact on a child. In the case of Becky Hoyle, being the fifth child of seven in a working-class family made her realize that she needed to work hard for what she wanted. That is why she got a job working with a stage magician called "Uncle Bob" to pay for her own dance lessons and then training in Gymnastics and acrobatics to make her a better dancer. Her parents suggested the Capoeira training, because she was often forced to travel home alone and they worried she might get in trouble. Parkour she took up when it was suggested she really needed a hobby (though it was not what they had in mind).

Things seemed to be on track for Becky, she had gotten a job in a Ballet company (only bit parts so far, but a paying job). She had managed to test out of some classes so she had more free time. Some of her older brothers and sisters had gotten jobs and moved out so there was more room at home. Then it hit the fan, she found out one of her friends was in a youth group that was rumored to be connected to a hate group. She secretly followed him, and found out the rumors were, if anything, understated. The hate group was using the youth group for training and recruiting, and would involve them in progressively riskier criminal activities before they would vanish.

Becky tried to talk her friend out of his association with the hate group. She even followed them to a building after a risky job and managed to sneak in...but got caught because security was much tighter than she realized. She realized as soon as she was caught that things were worse than she thought. This was not just an average hate group, it was a cover for a Hydra cell.

Fortunately they under-estimated Becky, leaving her alone and tied up. She escaped her bonds and knocked out a guard, and in trying to find a way out she stumbled across a room where they were keeping a couple of devices from a recent theft. They seemed like they might fit her (which made her wonder who they were originally intended for), so she tried them out. The arm device generated a glowing purple shield, and the boots seemed weightless and made no noise at all and let her jump amazingly well. With those devices she managed to escape out an upper-floor window, but before she got there a shot aimed at her deflected off her shield and into some volatile chemicals. As she fled into the night, the building exploded behind her.

She managed to track down a rumor that lead her to someone they called the Gimmick Guru. He was willing to help her out with additional gear, for a price...with no questions asked. She was really unsure about dealing with him, but she needed to create a visible presence to draw Hydra away from her family and friends. With almost all her savings, she managed to create the identity of Hoplite. She is left wondering where the items came from, and what she will do if the creators ever show up? She also wonders if her friend died, or if he disappeared into deeper Hydra training?

Personality

Personality:

Becky is from a large and loving family, but also a poor working-class family. She learned early on that she would have to work for anything she wanted. She can be a bit obsessive...like how she sticks with her friends and how she can keep trying the same move over and over until she gets it right. She is also honest, hard-working, and responsible...which is why she has so much trouble keeping her secret identity a secret.

Skills

Acrobat:
Becky is an excellent acrobat, but not quite Olympic or Professional level. She does score high in state and local meets, even having a few first place trophies for high school level.

Athletic:
Hoplite is a trained human athlete who regularly engages in intense physical exercise. While her training centers more on speed and agility than strength, she can lift more than twice her own weight, could finish a marathon, high jump more than her own height, and has excellent reflexes. She is not Superhuman, or even peak human, but she is a better than average human.

Capoeira:
Becky's parents wanted her to be capable of self defense without interfering with her dance training. As a result, they located a trainer capable of teaching her Capoeira, a martial art based upon dancing. Becky took to the art like a duck to water and, while not a black belt, is capable of defeating a larger and stronger opponent.

Parkour:
Becky often takes part in exercises at a local Parkour club. As a Traceur, she is quite good (thanks to her acrobatic training giving her a head start). She can generally get places faster than a city bus, if she tries. (She has been known to hitch a ride on top sometimes though.)

Stage Magic:
Becky can thank her part-time job working as an assistant to a stage magician for this. She is actually competent at Escape Artistry, Legerdemain, Sleight of Hand, and the arts of distraction. She is ONLY competent though, not great.

Stealth:

Becky is small and agile and can be very sneaky if she tries. She is not exactly a Ninja though, not does she know much about security devices.

Resources

Costume:
Pretty standard heroic fare, a bullet resistant costume. Armor Piercing bullets would probably blow through it, and even standard bullets might leave her bruised. It also provides some protection against knives and fists.

Energy Shield:
Hoplite does not know how it works, but the arm bracer projects a shield made of what she assumes is hard light, which tends to be violet in color for some reason. So far, it does not run out of power (which is good, since she has no idea how to recharge it). The shield is easily strong enough to deflect bullets, she is not sure what the limits are, but is sure it has some. Fortunately, whatever they are, they are well above any street level weapon she has encountered. The Shield can be turned off to make acrobatics easier and on again with the flick of a hidden switch. The shield can also be used as a melee weapon, which she can use to chip stone and dent steel (and it tends to make quite an impression of the thugs she hits with it). The shield can be adjusted somewhat: making it larger or smaller (about 50% in either direction) or making it an oval instead of a circle, but she rarely does so as the standard configuration works for her. She assumes that making it larger would make it more fragile, but has been reluctant to test that theory.

Gimmick Guru:
Another Nickname, this is who built her Snap Javelins and Helmet and obtained her costume for her. He knows who she is (and not the reverse, she simply knows how to get in touch with him). Rumor has it he will build custom gear without questions asked, so he might be supplying people on all sides (assuming they can pay).

Helmet:
Nothing really special, a crash helmet with a built in image enhancer that lets her see in low light conditions. It is stylized like an ancient Greek helmet.

Power Boots:
The boots are apparently made of metal and one would assume they would be loud and heavy. Such assumptions would be wrong. The boots, like the Energy Shield, are the product of advanced technology and seemingly never need to be recharged. With them on, Hoplite can move without making audible footsteps. She can jump to three times her own height (clearing 5 meters). She can drop to the ground from twice that height and land as light as a feather (provided she lands on her feet). She can run up walls to roughly twice the distance she can jump as well, but if she does not have something to stand on or grab she will fall. The boots are also pretty hard, adding extra impact to her kick attacks (no more so than steel-toed boots).

Snap Javelins:
Compared to the technology of her boots and shield, her Javelins are archaic. These spring-loaded compressible Javelins can be snapped out to full size with the right grip, which can make them pretty dangerous melee weapons. They can also be thrown with fair accuracy to distances of at least 50 feet, which is how she usually uses them. She carries four of these devices, though she rarely uses them on people. (She has been known to stop cars with them by throwing for the tires though.)

Uncle Bob:
That is his stage name, he is the magician she works with. He helps her sometimes with getting the stuff for her utility belt. He probably knows Becky is Hoplite, but has never asked.

Utility Belt:

A belt with pockets in it she she can use to store various tools of the trade. She often has things in it like flash bombs or smoke capsules available from magician's supply places, zip ties, lock picks, a prepaid cell phone, an emergency-band radio, and so on. Nothing fancy that can not be bought over the counter in a store though, and also nothing really expensive.

Weaknesses

Advanced Tech:
Becky is no tech genius, if anything goes wrong with her gear, she has no idea how to fix it.

Employed:
Becky has school and two part-time jobs (one with the Ballet troop, the other with Uncle Bob). Getting free to perform heroics is sometimes just not possible.

Friends & Family:
Becky has people she cares about, people she is loyal to. She tries to keep her lives separate, but if any of those she cares about are threatened she will be there to help.

Hydra:

Hydra really wants to get their stolen technology back...especially since they had not finished analyzing it after they stole it. They also kind of want the person using it dead, but getting it back is more important. That tends to mean if there are Hydra agents involved in a fight Hoplite is in, she will be their favored target.
