Profile

Shuffled across foster homes since he was 8, Marty has had a rough ride, made harder by the challenges and temptations of his mutant abilities. Convinced by the events he saw in the news, Marty kept his powers secret. Fixing computers and a couple of scholarships let him study electronics at City Tech.

During college Marty came across Rising Tide and Lag was born. His skills quickly built up his name within the collective as strikingly effective anti-corporate hacker. Odd jobs, "consulting work" and a few malfunctioning ATMs kept the lights on for Marty while he spent more and more of his time as Lag. Unfortunately for him, Rising Tide was in over its head and sucked him along with it into the plots of Arnim Zola. Now a prisoner at a secret Hydra base, Lag is desperately looking for a way out and a cure for Zola's poison.

Description

Lag could easily pass for half a dozen ethnicities, with light brown skin and no striking features. With tousled black hair, jeans, boots and a non-descript black jacket that screams Walmart, he looks like he would pass just as unnoticed walking down the street, on campus or in the mall. Brown eyes and slightly soft features make for a friendly, if unremarkable face.

When dressed as Lag, Marty wears a black hoody and black bullet proof vest under a battered looking leather jacket. Black jeans and boots are also standard issue. The outfit is topped off with a red and black Japanese horned demon face mask.

History

During high school, Marty began to come into his mutant powers. Having seen what happened to so many mutants in the news, Marty kept his abilities secret even as he experimented with his newfound abilities to control the technological world around him. His facility with electronics and encouragement from his teachers led Marty to tinker extensively and learn all he could. After graduating from high school, he worked fixing computers. With help from scholarships for disadvantaged youth, he was able to go to City Tech and study electronics.

City Tech expanded Marty's horizons considerably, and through the computer club he learned about Rising Tide, the global hacktivist collective. Marty was hooked and Lag was born. Lag proved extremely effective and soon he was raiding online and offline corporate information troves to expose wrongdoing and getting his dumps posted by the collective. Lag became so consumed by this new world that he barely completed his electronics program. Marty's life became secondary, getting just enough attention to scrape together enough to pay the rent and internet bills.

Lag was soon well-known in Rising Tide, but tension grew as the group began focusing more and more on SHIELD and less and less on what Lag considered important. Things quickly got out of hand and soon Rising Tide was at the center of taking the digital world hostage. Before long, Lag and several other core members of Rising Tide were forced to band together and meet physically, to try and counter the mounting pressure from global law enforcement and intelligence agencies. They were not successful and a raid netted a large majority of the core group. Lag used his abilities to escape the raid, only to fall into the clutches of Zola. He was drugged and whisked away to a secret Hydra base in China where he has been forced advance Zola's schemes. Zola keeps Lag prisoner by means of a poison. Lag needs an antidote injection every 24 hours, or he will die. Painfully.

Personality

At heart, Lag is incorrigibly curious. He wants to know, wants to know now, and often fails to think about whether he ought to know. But he is far from malicious with his curiosity, being quick to lend a hand. Ambivalent towards authority, especially authorities that seem to have come by their position arbitrarily, he is the first to side with the underdog. He is also self-effacing in his humour, and when focused, extremely intense.

Abilities

TECHNOPATHY
Lag is a technopath, having the mutant ability to psionically control machines and electronic devices. This power allows Lag to make devices function within their means, but not to cause them to act in novel ways. He cannot make a truck fly or hear through a CCTV camera with no microphone. Lag's control and the focus required vary with the complexity of the device and his own skills. While he could flick a switch within a hundred feet, as long as he can see it, he would need a physical link to control a computer, such as through touch or the Internet. Similarly, the number of devices he can control is in line with his physical abilities. While he could flick two switches at once, he could only make one car drive or plane fly. Controlling something truly complex like an advanced computer or modern aircraft might require so much concentration that Lag is completely unaware of anything else, including his own bodily sensations. While he gains an intuitive sense of how to make a device function, his underlying skills are important. Nobody wants a pilot with a vague intuition of how a plane works. Since his abilities are psionic, anything known to block or limit psionic abilities will block or limit Lag's technopathy.

Skills

Weaknesses

CIVILIAN
Lag grew up as a poor nerd in New York, not as a vat-grown soldier, martial arts master or space mercenary. He has no appreciable combat skills.

FOCUS
Technopathy often requires a great deal of concentration. Having that concentration broken abruptly can have ugly consequences. Being startled, injured or otherwise having his concentration broken can cause whatever Lag was controlling to go haywire. While a light switch flickering on and off for an hour may be a minor inconvenience, a semi-truck careening out of control is something else entirely.

POISONED
Lag has been poisoned by Arnim Zola and requires an antidote injection every 24 hours to stay alive.
