Lois Lane is a reporter for the Daily Planet. Her name is well known throughout the news, reporting and internet venues. She tends to have a nose for trouble and while she manages to get into trouble, she also manages to find a way out of it. And with /the/ story of it too. Her investigative journalism has won her a Pulitzer Prize, twice, for articles and stories she's written. However, just because she's won the Pulitzer Prize doesn't mean she's resting upon her laurels. No, instead, she's always looking for that next scoop, the next story, the next injustice to shine light upon.

Description:

Lois Lane, Ace Reporter of the Daily Planet, isn't a tall woman. She tops at 5'6", more should she wear heels, which she often does. Her physique is lithe, of someone who works out regularly, perhaps not fanatically, but definitely regularly. Her features are quite pretty, with long black hair that frames an oval face, blue eyes and a definite stubborn set to her mouth and tilt of her chin. Her hair falls several inches past her shoulders and is typically styled in a loose manner.

Today, Lois is dressed for on the job reporting. She sports a light cream pantsuit. The pantsuit has a jacket, white silk blouse beneath it and matching cream pants. The only splash of colors are her belt, pumps and lanyard. All of those items sport a contrasting black color. The lanyard holds her press credentials, which shows the logo of the Daily Planet, along with her picture and name. Often times she sports a small purse, which typically holds her smart phone (with recorder), pencil, pens and small notepad.

History:

Lois Lane was born the daughter of Sam and Ella Lane, a military brat who spent her youth traveling from base posting to base posting whenever her father was reassigned. Raised like the son he would never have, Sam taught Lois to take care of herself and instilled in her the values and stubborn streak that would help her throughout her life. When she was fifteen, her father was stationed in Metropolis and Lois lied about her age in order to find entry-level work at the Daily Planet. Although she was eventually found out, Lois was able to secure the editor's favor by providing him with a front page story. Lois got the job, and spent that summer interning at the Daily Planet.

Having found her true calling in journalism, Lois would eventually graduate from high school and go on to study journalism at Metropolis State University. The Daily Planet hadn't forgotten her nose for news, and she was given a job straight out of college. Her rise to the top would be meteoric, as one of her earliest stories involved the uncovering of the organised crime syndicate Intergang in a series of articles that would win her the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Journalism that year. Never content to rest on her laurels, Lois continued from strength to strength and became one of the most famous and respected journalists within the entire Daily Bugle Communications family of news outlets.

Since the first appearance of Superman, Lois has made even more of a name for herself by writing stories about Metropolis' very own Man of Steel. Despite this, she has not allowed her focus to remain strictly on Superman - always on the look out for a new story to share with the world.

Personality:

Lois is the archetypical strong woman. She shoots straight, is almost brutally honest, and will almost never accept help - she is convinced that if she works hard enough, she can do anything she set her mind to. Much of this comes from her father who, himself a rugged individualist, taught her never to rely on other people too much. Of course, this often translates as stubborn when she refuses to accept help even when she desperately seems to need it.

Beyond this, Lois has a great and abiding affection for the truth. She dislikes few things more than secrets, and it can be a difficult thing to make her understand the benefit of keeping them. She feels the world has a right to know, and this coupled with her obsession regarding telling a good story are what make her a peerless reporter. At heart, she is a good person and has gone out of her way more than once to help the subjects of her stories.

Close Quarters Combat:
Lois is no dark avenger with pointy ears nor is she sporting a flag-suit and a shield, but she knows well how to defend herself. This may not be very effective against the super-powered, villainous sorts who tend to make trouble in Metropolis but she is capable of bringing your average, run-of-the-mill thug low provided she's not too outnumbered. She has earned a black belt in Krav Maga, and was trained from her youth in a smattering of other martial styles by her military father - mostly in the US Army's Combatives Program. This includes proficiency with an edged weapon like a knife, and as such her style of fighting is less about flourish and more about putting down her enemy in as efficient a way as is possible. She won't be roaming the streets as a vigilante anytime soon, but few violent criminals have underestimated her more than once.

Fast Talking:
Lois has learned the art of getting places by acting like she belongs there. By speaking fast enough, acting entitled enough, and blasting her opponents with hard-nosed rhetoric, Lois has talked her way into all manner of secure situations from elite parties to back alley meetings between notorious criminals. It doesn't always work, and if she comes across someone particularly astute or quick-witted she won't get anywhere - but this is not the case for the vast majority of individuals who work security. She never sweats, and can exhibit absolute confidence that she is correct even when staggeringly wrong.

Investigation:
Although some have simply dismissed her as nosy, Lois has a stunningly sharp intellect and a real talent for connecting the dots. She is able to take seemingly disparate clues and link them together into a singular narrative, and her eye for detail in this regard has blown the lid off more than a few attempts at conspiracy and skulduggery. As well as being able to connect these clues once she has them, Lois is exceptionally good at bringing them all together in the first place. No avenue of research is unknown to her and she has mastered everything from trawling the latest social media to browsing periodicals on microfiche at the public library. The simple fact of it is that once Lois catches the scent of a story, there's very little that will prevent her from eventually exposing all the gory details to the harsh light of day.

Journalism:
The other side of the coin. Lois' ability to sniff out news would be nothing if she weren't able to present it in a digestible, interesting, and scintillating manner. It was Lois' ability to earn the attention of the Daily Planet's already wide readership through her writing that earned her the Pulitzer Prize, and she has parlayed this into a number of non-fiction books as well. Lois possesses a real talent for putting pen to paper, able to write anything from editorial opinion piece to hard 'just the facts' news and anything in between. Her dedication to her craft is absolute, and this has secured Lois' position as one of the most respected and acclaimed journalists on the planet.

Linguistics:
Lois grew up the daughter of a United States Army officer and spent her youth moving from base to base, often overseas. When she finally set out on her own, she found she had a bit of an ear for languages. She is fluent in both English and German, with smatterings of Arabic, French, and Burundan - enough to hold very basic conversations or something more detailed if she really sits and focuses. She picks up new languages fairly easily, though in the age of digital translators this isn't quite as big a hill to climb as it once was.

Lockpicking:
When she isn't able to convince the guards to let her through, Lois has learned to pick locks. Things like advanced electronic locks and biometric security are beyond her skills, but she can get through most doors and windows as well as even the occasional safe with enough time and focus. Lois is well aware that these sort of skills are not exactly smiled on by law enforcement, which makes it lucky she isn't trying to uncover evidence admissible in court - just evidence that will make a good story. She isn't about to don a catsuit and avoid laser fences (unless she really wants that story) but a little low-level B&E is something she's quite adept at.

Marksmanship:
Lois may not be the sort to own a whole closet full of firearms, but her father taught her early to respect and appreciate guns. As such, Lois maintains a firearms license and proficiency with small arms like handguns. She knows how to clean and maintain her weapons, and is also a deft shot. Trick shots and the like are beyond her purview, but she is able to strike the center mass of a target nine times out of ten and is capable of shooting straight even under pressure and stress. Her father trained her in a number of larger weapons such as rifles and shotguns, although she does not practice with them and would be less accurate of a shot.

Photography:

Typically, Lois would prefer to bring along one of the Daily Planet's staff photographers with her when she is covering a story. But, that's not always possible - especially when said staff photographer's red hair sticks out like a sore thumb. She knows the rule of thirds, how to focus a lens, and generally what makes a photograph good for print either online or in the newspaper. She's not about to win any awards for her photography, but she has the basics down and can be her own one-woman news team when the need arises.

Lois has been working as a reporter for the Daily Planet for her entire professional career. She has made contacts in almost every strata of society from the politically powerful to everyday people trying to make a living in Metropolis' Suicide Slum. She can leverage these sources for information, and even rely on some of them for deep background leaks on particularly juicy stories. She maintains a closeness with many of her sources, and will go out of her way to keep them protected.

Daily Planet:
Lois is a reporter for the Daily Planet, providing articles for both its print and online editions which are themselves often reprinted by partner outlets within the Daily Bugle Communications network. As well as an impressive salary (they want to make sure she stays on staff), she has also been issued with press credentials that allow her access to crime scenes and anywhere that might otherwise be restricted to her as a civilian but open to the media. On top of all that, she has access to the Daily Planet's impressive research department and archives.

Royalties:
Lois has authored a number of books, including a more in-depth discussion of the organized crime piece that won her the Pulitzer entitled 'Intergang' and non-fiction about a kidnapping ring in Suicide Slum call 'When It Rains, God Is Crying'. These books performed very well for her, spending several weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List and still selling reasonably well across the world. Lois enjoys a modest amount of royalties for these books, enough to keep her comfortable even without her reporter's salary.

Sam Lane:

Lois' father is General Sam Lane, a high-ranking official within the United States Army. Although she would never dream of pressing him for access to classified information, she can nevertheless use him as a lead to other sources she has no qualms about leveraging. While their like-minded personalities often put them at odds (they're both as stubborn as a mule), they still get along and speak on a relatively regular basis. She might even be able to ask for help from him, though she'd never admit she needed it in the first place.

Enemies:
Lois has been chasing the truth ever since she became a journalist. The story that won her the Pulitzer also exposed one of the worlds most insidious organised crime outfits - Intergang. They have had an axe to grind with her ever since, and more than once Lois has had to contend with some Intergang goon trying to 'send her a message.' On top of this, there are more powerful and dangerous villains on whom she has written unfavorable (but true) stories. Many of them would like nothing more than to harm or kill her, if they could only get close enough.

Newshawk:

Lois has a passion for the truth. It is her belief that the truth must out, and it is never wrong to bring facts to the light of day. This includes situations where her own life may be at risk, or where it might benefit her to keep her mouth shut. In these situations, Lois will often double down and make sure everyone knows what she knows. It is an admirable trait in theory, but it can come back to bite her very easily. The truth is a newshawk in every sense of the word, and if she smells a good story she will stop at nothing to bring it to light.
