Methos was born 2,946 BCE, but of course, he does not remember that. In fact, in 2,867 BCE, he began keeping a journal as even then he knew that there was a great deal that he had simply forgotten over time. His journal, which he has kept ever since, was his way of preserving his own knowledge.

Methos is an immortal, the oldest living one, though there are older beings unrelated to the species that refers to itself as "the Immortals".

They do not live as a united people. They have no territory of their own. They do not even have a common language. The only bond between them is a set of oral traditions called "the Rules", which are passed from teacher to student, and their immortality. They cannot die, unless you take their head, with it, their power.

No one can say who created the rules. They are not enumerated, like a body of laws, but they are quoted when pertinent to the circumstances.

  • No immortal may fight on Holy Ground, no matter who regards it as Holy. That the immortal knows it is holy to someone is enough.
  • Immortal combat is one on one only. Outside interference is neither sought, nor permitted.
  • Mortals must not learn about the Immortals. If you are killed, you move on, creating a new "life" for yourself somewhere else, under a new identity.
  • When only a few Immortals are left, they will feel drawn to a distant land, to fight for the Prize. This future event is known as the Gathering.
  • In the end, there can be only one. The last Immortal will receive all the power of every immortal who ever lived.

It is not known what creates an immortal. Prior to their first death, they are only potentially immortal, and not all people have the potential to become immortals. Immortals may sense a perspective immortal's potential after prolonged contact, as Duncan MacLeod sensed from Richie Ryan and Michelle Webster.

Two things are certain though. All immortals and all potential immortals, begin as foundlings, waiting to be adopted. And immortals and potential immortals cannot have children, either before their first death, or after.

For many years now, Duncan MacLeod has maintained residences in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and Paris, France. Joe Dawson, his current Watcher, is a member of a merged Watchers Council, which includes the Watchers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and the men of Letters (Supernatural).

Characters from the series are appable as AFCs, FCs, and VFCs.
