History

At 10, Jean's best friend chased a ball into the street; seconds later, she felt the other girl die, plunging her into a sort of catatonia as the girl's last moments crashed down upon her psyche.

Weeks of visits to every specialist they could find left the Grey family desperate and helpless, so much so that when Professor Charles Xavier arrived, claiming to be able to make contact with - and perhaps even draw their daughter from the void - they didn't much mind that he'd need to bring her to his upstate manor for a while to do it.

After weeks of treatment, Jean was awake, functioning, and no longer in possesssion of her telepathic gift due to mental blocks installed by the Professor, but still capable of moving things with her mind. The Professor's Westchester estate wasn't so far from the Greys' home in Annandale-on-Hudson, so Jean continued meeting with him to learn how to control her telekinesis and take baby steps towards getting a hold of the rest of her powers. By the time she was twelve, however, it had become apparent to him that even regular tutoring sessions wouldn't be enough for her to truly get a handle on her potential, which led him to approach the family with an offer: he would take her in and teach her how to master her mutant gift, and in the process, he'd also ensure that she received an education on par with any prep school in the nation.

The family accepted, and Jean went off to live at Xavier's Mansion. True to his word, he helped her hone her telekinetic abilities until - when she was 15 - she was introduced to several new classmates, teenagers like her who were also born with special powers. The Professor began training them collectively, teaching them how to use their gifts in conjunction with one another for the common good.

Once he felt they were ready, he formally organized them into a team he called the 'X-Men', hoping that by using their powers in the service of humanity, they would be stand as positive examples of mutantkind to a populace that largely hated and feared them. Jean took to this shift quickly, eager to show her teacher and herself how far she'd come from being a scared child with voices in her head.

Jean and the X-Men fought for years to further their teacher's dream of a world in which humans and mutants could co-exist peacefully. Even when it was time to graduate, she committed to remaining a member of the team, studying psychology at ESU between battles against mutant supervillains, ancient demons, alien conquerors, and human conspiracies. As she grew into her powers, the blocks holding her telepathy in check were removed, allowing her to truly embrace the side of her powers she'd feared as a child. She became one of the team's most dedicated members-- which is why, in 2024, when a friend of the Professor's called on him for assistance after a missing space vessel inexplicably reappeared in Earth's orbit, she was among the X-Men sent to investigate.

The vessel almost immediately proved to be infested with voraciously parasitic aliens, who - after commandeering the crew - managed to reverse its heading in the hopes of finding more food. The aliens quickly proved to be more than a match for the mutants, threatening to overwhelm them just as they had the crew. Salvaging the ship was not an option-- but neither was letting it linger there and waiting for the creatures to figure out how to initiate re-entry.

So Jean took it upon herself to solve the quandary. Pushing her telekinesis to its limits, she forced the rest of the team back to the shuttle that brought them, wrapped the infested vessel in a force field, then fought her way to its engine room, where she proceeded to trigger a catastrophic meltdown. Caught at the heart of a blast bright enough to light up the sky below, Jean's death throes cast ripples of love and determination through the astral plane, touching the minds of her teammates, her mentor-- and something else.

Fire consumed her for far longer than it should have in the void of space, burning away flesh and bone until just the essence of her remained-- and then, it spoke. Drawn to her outpouring of love, it proclaimed itself to be 'The Phoenix', the blazing embodiment of life and its passions. It offered her another chance to see those she loved-- but only if she'd let herself be joined with it. She accepted without hesitation and the Phoenix Force kept its promise, rebuilding her body bit by bit and infusing her with its energies.

Six months later, she appeared on the doorstep of Xavier's school with the barest memories of how she was returned to life and no real concept of what, exactly, she'd allowed to take root in her consciousness.

Personality

Jean is a deeply determined and outwardly confident woman, having spent years adventuring alongside the X-Men while working to overcome the deeply seated fear that her powers would one day destroy her. She strives to use her natural-born gifts to protect not only her fellow mutants, but humanity as a whole-- a drive which ultimately led to her death. While she has since recovered, she once again wrestles with her old fears of being overwhelmed by powers that she can't quite control, thanks to the enigmatic agent of her resurrection - a passion-fueled cosmic entity known as the Phoenix Force - having staked out a corner of her soul and psyche as its own.

Now, more than ever, she tends to overwork and overcommit, especially when doing so allows her to make life easier for the people closest to her; better that than letting her teammates see her as a victim of some kind. The act of committing herself to the people around her also serves to ground her in the world, making it more difficult for the Phoenix entity to override her will-- or so she hopes, as she throws herself into supporting her team.

Regardless of the Phoenix, she's an empathetic woman who wants the best for not only her friends and family, but the world at large, having spent years feeling the hurts and struggles of the people around her-- and thanks to nearly eight years costumed adventuring, she's plenty willing to fight for it. As a true believer in Xavier's dream of peaceful co-existence, she strives to use her powers carefully, causing harm only when there's viable non-violent solution. Similarly, she tries to refrain from abusing her ability to read and manipulate minds, though she isn't above skimming useful skills from nearby minds if the situation calls for it.

Abilities

EMPATHY
As part of her broad psychic talents, Jean is an empath capable of perceiving and manipulating the emotions and sensations of others, as well as broadcasting her own. Although she is practiced enough not to involuntarily do these things for the most part, intensely felt emotions in her surroundings - particularly within a city block or so of her - are likely to be picked up if she doesn't make a concentrated effort to block them out.

PSYCHIC SHIELD
Jean is a powerful and experienced enough telepath to protect herself from most mental intrusions. A similarly(or more) skillful, or especially powerful telepath is plenty capable of breaking through her defenses, though, particularly if they're able to dedicate some time to peeling them back.

PYROKINESIS
Jean is able to generate heat and fire by psychokinetically stimulating matter on a molecular level. She can project flames out to about 5 feet of herself or raise the temperature of objects within 15 feet of herself; either way, she can manage temperatures of up to 500 degrees.

TELEKINESIS
Jean is capable of psychokinetically projecting force and manipulating matter, both in large quantities and in minute detail. She can manipulate up to fifty tons of mass and strike with similar levels of force without significant strain, but past 25 tons, her fine control suffers. She can also shield herself and others from attacks; disassemble devices and structures down to the bolts; and propel herself and others in flight. The use of these abilities is dependant on concentration, willpower, and fatigue: just activating and maintaining them is physically/mentally draining, and circumstances that make it difficult for her to properly focus her willpower on using her brain to affect the physical world can greatly impact her control or render her unable to use her telekinesis at all. Although it can be subdued if she thinks to, her telekinetic manifestations tends to come with a bright pink power signature.

TELEPATHY
Jean possesses the potential for Omega-level telepathy, but has has yet to completely grow into her potential due in no small part to blocks installed in her psyche by Charles Xavier when she was a child. Even then, thanks to years of training in the fundamentals of her abilities, she is capable of performing standard telepathic feats such as communication, psychic detection, illusion-casting, astral projection, mind-reading, psychic camouflage, mind control, launching psychic assaults, and erecting psychic shields over vast ranges, with communication and astral combat being her specialties. She can manipulate multiple minds simultaneously if they're within about a city block of her, and detect them out to about a mile.

THE PHOENIX FORCE
A phenomenally powerful cosmic entity - the Phoenix Force, burning embodiment of passion and life - resides within Jean, amplifying her natural gifts many times over-- but only on its terms. Under normal circumstances, this connection allows her to perform a couple of molecular-level tricks with her telekinesis: starting fires and transforming street clothes into her X-Men uniform.

In periods when the Phoenix is able to assume more direct control of Jean, the entity is able to push her powers to their fullest potential and beyond. She is able to psychokinetically alter matter on a subatomic level, manipulate electromagnetic energies, survive hostile environments like deep space, and extend her sense of touch through objects that she's controlling. Her telepathy expands to the point of being able to barrel through most psychic protections with sheer force and manipulate numerous minds miles away from her, as if connected to a device like Cerebro. Finally - perhaps obviously - she's capable of creating 'cosmic fire' hot enough to melt vanadium steel, even in wet or anaerobic conditions.

While the Phoenix entity expands Jean's capabilities greatly, it doesn't actually render her body much more capable of channeling that level of power than she naturally might be; only steady training could do that. Accessing these expanded capabilities is intensely tiring, to the point of leaving her exhausted or unconscious after a few minutes of use.

Skills

ATHLETICS
Jean is in great shape for a woman of her age and build and can perform strenuous physical tasks - things like swimming, climbing, running, tumbling, and jumping- with a respectable, if not particularly noteworthy degree of competence; she is not going to win any medals in anything anytime soon.

EDUCATION
Jean received a prep school education between fights to the death against evil mutants. She is also a few years into a psychology degree at ESU, though her progress has been stalled of late due to an unexpected, death-related sabbatical.

OPS TRAINING
Practical experience and Danger Room training has given Jean a solid foundational understanding of stealth and infiltration techniques, allowing her to function competently and somewhat unobtrusively in hostile territory with or without her powers.

PILOTING
Jean can pilot most civilian and commercial aircraft capably, but is rather lacking in the experience department. She is probably not the first person you'd want to turn to for piloting the Blackbird through a field of missiles with a broken wing and one engine, or even less overtly troublesome combat scenarios; most of her training stems from simulations.

SELF-DEFENSE
Jean has received enough hand to hand combat training to render her a passable fighter without the use of her powers. She uses techniques drawn from BJJ, Judo, and Jeet Kune Do, which have been blended into a defensively-oriented style meant to give her a fighting chance against opponents larger than herself.

Resources

X-MEN
Jean is a founding and current member of the X-Men, having reestablished ties with the group after an involuntary hiatus. Her membership provides her with access to the group's headquarters, which includes high tech medical facilities, lab space, vehicles, and and a holographic training suite known as the Danger Room.

Weaknesses

FOCUS
Jean's powers are formidable, but wholly reliant on her ability to concentrate. She has had enough Danger Room sessions and mission experience that the chaos of combat is not in and of itself an impediment to using her abilities, and to be able to manage a degree of multi-tasking. Being suddenly struck - especially in a vital area - or subjected to sonic attacks can readily disrupt her focus, however, and mind-altering substances/circumstances can make it difficult or downright impossible to concentrate properly.

KINDA DIED
In the latter half of 2024, Jean sacrificed herself during a mission in space to ensure that her teammates would make it home alive. The bright light that met her afterwards burned with life and possibility, however, pulling her back from the brink rather than welcoming her to the other side.

She has since returned to Earth, but months passed between her death and return, leaving her in awkward - if not entirely unprecedented - legal territory. Life moved on without her, leaving her to figure out just how to resume living again and distancing her somewhat from friends and teammates as works to come to terms with her situation. She vividly remembers the terror of her last moments, but little else prior to returning to Earth; she doesn't truly understand how or why it is that she's back, and for all she knows, she could keel over again at any time.

MUTANT
As a mutant, Jean is hated and feared by an ever-shifting, but frequently rabid segment of the population and viewed as an exploitable resource by any number of unscrupulous governmental, military, or independent organizations/actors.

PHOENIX
Jean exists in a fragile balance with the Phoenix Force, which has staked out a corner of her psyche as its own. She is able to stave off the temptation of power and absolute freedom that it presents in her day to day life, but in moments of intense passion or emotional distress, the Phoenix entity is able to override her will and take full control of her body, giving it a taste of the fullness of existence which it craves. This does have the benefit of greatly expanding her powers, but it's the Phoenix who has control of them, not Jean-- and while it isn't actively malevolent, the Phoenix is a tempestuous entity with no regard for human standards of morality. The Phoenix Force does have something of a protective streak, but its sheer power and blase attitude towards collateral damage make it dangerous even when it's acting in a roughly altruistic fashion. The Phoenix is alien and terrifying to Jean; she has yet to establish any meaningful rapport with it and instead strives to prevent the entity from playing havoc with the world through her body to whatever extent she can.

X-FOES
The X-Men have made enemies ranging from virulent anti-mutant groups to mutant criminals to extradimensional conquerors, over the years. As one of the team's longest running members, Jean is readily associated with the rest of them and an obvious target for aggression from anyone with an axe to grind with the group as a whole.
