Description:

You're looking at a tall young man with light brown skin, broad shoulders, and a lean, athletic build. There is a hint of Native American in him -- the shade of the skin, the shape of the eyes and the jawline -- but the rest of his features suggest he's of mixed ancestry. He has raven black hair that falls to about shoulder length, and when it isn't tied back in a loose ponytail, it frames a face that smiles easily, and often.

He is wearing a tight black zip-up hoodie with the sleeves torn off at the shoulders, leaving his sinewy arms bare and free to move. Around his left wrist he wears what looks like a handmade leather bracelet, and if you look at the neckline of his hoodie you might see a hint of a dark beaded necklace. Below the belt, he wears a pair of faded blue jeans and a pair of black Converse with white soles, both of which look like they've seen better days.

History

History:

David Reese was born in a little town called Sacaton, Arizona, to a Caucasian father and a Native American mother. His parents separated around the time he was born, leaving him to be raised by mom on the Gila River Indian Reservation.

He took an early interest in martial arts movies, having discovered his dad's forgotten stash of them at age six. That interest bled over into combat sports, and young Rattlesnake had a habit of acting out the on-screen action in his living room. As chance would have it, one of David's uncles from Phoenix happened by for a visit when he was eight years old.

"Hey ma," he said, sitting on the sofa, watching David intently. "This kid's got it!"

Uncle talked to some people he knew in town. Before long, a friend who trained at MMA Lab in Phoenix came down to visit. Word spread to the coaches there. Phone calls were made. Within a month, mom was being sweet-talked into moving to the city with David, so his training could begin.

That was then. Now, "Rattlesnake" is 19 years old and has an amateur record of 17 wins, no losses, and a professional record of 3 wins, no losses. Promoters and sponsors are beginning to make overtures to him. MMA journalists are writing articles about him. Every indication is that he is destined for the Big Show, but the attention hasn't dimmed David's cheery, lassiez-faire attitude toward what he does.

"Fighters fight," he often says, with a wide smile and a shrug of his shoulders. "The other stuff doesn't matter so much."

Personality

Personality:

Affable and easygoing on the surface, David seems more grounded than someone his age ought to be. It's the kind of humility that comes from a lifetime of rigorous training. "I'm on the path, you know?" he might say, and what he means, perhaps without fully understanding it, is the path to enlightenment, to self-understanding.

Abilities

Mutant Telepath:

What David doesn't yet realize about his great success in the cage is that he owes it to his Mutant telepathy. When his sparring partner stands in front of him, or his opponent in the cage, his mind 'tunes in' to theirs, and he can read their moment to moment actions with perfect clarity.

It's reminiscent of mushin no shin (Musashi's "the mind of no-mind") and the "zone" experience. An unfixed stare. He thinks only of making the hit. He has no preconceived notion of which target is the one to aim for. He just lets nature take its course, and permits the spirit of the thing to express itself through him.

This Mutant ability is only in its first phase of development. Through proper training, David has the potential to gain the powers of a typical mutant telepath, which includes reading the 'thinking' mind, taking control of it, and speaking telepathically to others. At the moment he is entirely untrained, and so is limited to his current abilities.

OOC NOTE: I will ask for PC permission before trying to read your brains. :)

Skills

Athlete:
While untrained in things like gymnastics, David is quite physically adroit, far above average when it comes to sprinting, jumping, running for distance, etc. Whether or not this has anything to do with Mutant genetics, he has no way of knowing. Because he doesn't know he's a Mutant yet.

Martial Arts:
By the year 2029, 'MMA' has most likely coalesced into a style of its own, and "Rattlesnake" is one of its rising stars. His style is an amalgamation of techniques borrowed from boxing, Muay Thai, Greco-Roman wrestling and Jiu Jutsu. He's still a little young to be counted among the best of the best, but he's a diligent student. So he's well on his way, and is willing to learn from anyone to get there.

Mechanics:
David has a recreational aptitude with engines, with a particular specialty in American muscle cars from the 1970's, and a particular particular sub-specialty in his own car, a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner. The car is an heirloom from his great grandfather on mom's side.

Outdoorsman:

David's people, the Akimel O'odham, or "River People," are part of the larger community of Pima Indians of southern Arizona. From them he learned how to hunt and fish, track wildlife, and generally fend for himself in the wilderness. He particularly likes fishing.

Resources

Car:
David owns an antique car. A 1970 Plymouth Road Runner, red, with black racing stripes down the middle. It was his great grandfather's car, and it's survived all the way down the line.

Income:

While he isn't yet at the phase of his career where multi-million dollar contracts are coming his way, David is making a solid middle class income on winnings and sponsorships.

Weaknesses

Inexperienced:
David's young life has had, thus far, a very narrow focus. Anything outside of training and competition might as well not exist, as far as it concerns his competence in worldly things. He's a high school dropout, for one. If he didn't have the gifts he has (especially the one he isn't aware of), he'd be flipping burgers.

Rose-Tinted Glasses:

Perhaps a symptom of youthful inexperience, David prefers to think the best of people. He's also a little averse to conflict, which might come as a surprise when looking at a person who makes their living beating on people in a cage. If you were to ask David if there's good in anyone, if anyone can be redeemed, he would say yes.
