Description:

Standing at five foot nine, Ryu doesn't tend to stand out in the crowd, being on the short side for a male, with distinctly Asian features. Hair, the color of charcoal, covers his head in a slightly unkempt cut that keeps it above his ears and off the nape of his neck. Most of the time, this black hair has a red strap of cloth pulled through it and tied off in the back. Dark brown eyes have similar black brows, slightly bushy, above them. Ryu is gifted with a squared-off jaw, still quite firm enough to testify that he is under thirty, and dimples on either cheek that appear when he smiles.

He is rather large of frame, and thickly muscular through the chest, shoulders, and thighs as a boxer might be. Strong arms and legs, yet an agility to their step, a deadly grace that infuses his every move. It also exhibits control, for not one move is made without intent, a mastery of body rarely matched. He carries himself with a slight hunch, shoulderblades pressed down, and spine erect, footfalls light and always on alert. A few scars that are visible, across his hands, fore arms and chest show he's seen battle.

Ryu's most recognizable attire consists of a white karate gi with the sleeves torn off, it is slightly tattered from years of use, and the top is slightly open to show his chest muscles and bare tanned skin. A black belt around Ryu's waist has four kanji of the Furinkazan emblazoned upon the right end: wind, forest, fire and mountain. His hands are generally covered in red sparring gloves for when he fights, and his feet are almost always bare. He carries around a large, white duffel bag containing items important to his travels, such as clothing, plane tickets, passports, and local currency.

History

History:

As a very young child, Ryu was orphaned and left with no memories about his parents, and whether they were still alive. He was found and adopted by a man named Gouken who raised Ryu in his secluded dojo and trained Ryu in the ways of his martial arts. Shortly afterwards, Gouken would later train his best friend's spoiled son, Ken Masters. Ken served not only as a sparring partner, but also gave Ryu a friend in the form of a boy his own age. Ryu looked up to Gouken as a father figure, and regards Ken as his best friend and surrogate brother, a relationship which remains to this day.

When Ryu turned 23 years old, Gouken believed that Ryu was ready to travel the world in order to test and hone his martial skills against the best fighters from around the world. With this, Ryu left Gouken's dojo, and headed to fight in the World Warrior tournament.

Ryu is one of the participants of the World Warrior tournament. After defeating all challengers, Ryu's skills earn him the right to fight its host, Sagat. Sagat nearly beats Ryu into unconsciousness and, thinking he had won, drops his guard to help Ryu up. Ryu, however, allows himself to be engulfed by the Satsui no Hado and strikes Sagat with a nearly-fatal Metsu Shoryuken that not only knocks Sagat unconscious, but also marks his chest with a great scar. After regaining consciousness and discovering what had happened, Sagat swears vengeance on Ryu. While it wasn't revealed at the time, when Ryu scarred Sagat, some of his Hado passed to Sagat.

Ryu leaves Sagat behind and returns to his home, only to find that Gouken, his master and adoptive father, has apparently been murdered. Learning that Akuma had fought and supposedly killed his master, Ryu began to travel the world to find this man. He encounters and fights Akuma on a secluded island known as Gokuentou, and wins; however, Akuma was only testing him, and senses that Ryu has the same powers as he does. He proceeds to tell Ryu about the Satsui no Hado - a power that consumes the practitioners of their shared fighting style, driving them to win even when it means killing the opponent. Akuma then uses his fist to smash the island, leaving Ryu stranded.

It's been three years since he was saved from the island by a passing freighter, and Ryu is now travelling the world in the most humble of ways, earning his way across the world with meneial tasks and jobs to fund his frugal lifestyle and pay his way.

Personality

Personality:

Ryu is a silent, meek, humble, submissive, self-deprecating, and respectful individual; which is often juxtaposed against the light-hearted, fiery persona of his childhood friend, Ken. He wanders the world with the desire for complete mastery of his martial art, and takes both his travels and training seriously. For Ryu, the training and the mastery that comes from the fight are all that he requires for satisfaction, declining the more material trappings of his various accomplishments as a warrior, simply moving on to his next challenge once he is victorious without delay, unless he is offered food or if he wants to converse with his friendly rivals. Though he does not actively seek the role of a hero, he possesses a strong sense of justice as well; protecting the innocent against the predations of bullies and tyrants is the one of the few things that Ryu will prioritize over a satisfying fight.

Because of this "wandering warrior" persona and also being trained far away from modern-day culture, Ryu often appears detached to others. Despite this, he is a kind, authentic, good-hearted, and demonstrative warrior who readily helps those less fortunate than himself, is protective and gentle towards children, and on rare occasions, shows a sense of humor (albeit a bad one). He also respects others with skills equal to his own and holds them in high respect. To those who he is able to beat and is on friendly terms with, he compliments or encourages them to continue training and get stronger, sometimes offering help first hand. Ryu has a voracious appetite and would intake large amounts of food if the opportunity presented itself.

There is, however, a dark side to Ryu: His drive to improve himself, no matter the difficulty, risks developing into a drive to win and to be the best at any cost. This darker drive is fed by (and in turn feeds) the Satsui no Hado within his soul, an influence which Ryu must constantly fight to suppress from killing.

Abilities

Chi Manipulation:
Having learned to control the natural Chi that flows with and around him, Ryu can boost his attacks and his power level expotently. He can focus his attacks to knock someone through a wall, or to defend himself, or to power through a situation that most normal humans would find impossible.

However, the most focused use of this power is in his various special attacks. The first of these is his Hadoken, which is literally an energy projectile created from his willpower. Those hit with this power will find it a powerful enough force to knock them off their feet, and he can hit targets up to seventy-five feet away with it.

The second of these is the Shoryuken. Instead of throwing his willpower, he focuses his will power directly into a rising uppercut that can strike an opponent multiple times. This punch is powerful enough to rip a door off of it's hinges, stop a car that is moving forward, and knock back a target several feet.

The last of these is Tatsumaki Senpukyaku, or helicopter kick. This is the weakest of his chi attacks, and can knock a man backwards, but usually only hits once, due to his lack of experience in using it.

Elemental Control:
Along with his Chi manipulation, Ryu is able to manipulate to a minor degree, fire and electricity. This this ability, he's able to add their powers to his Hadoken and Shoryuken to provide a more powerful attack, setting small articles of clothing of fire and burning flesh with the effect of a second-degree burn.

Enhanced Form:
Through his years of training and education in the martial arts, Ryu has learned to be more than just a warrior. He's put himself in prime physical and mental condition. With his training in manipulating his chi, Ryu's built up a durability that he can take a severe beating and continue to get up and come back for another round.

He's also quick and agile. While he may not be able to dodge automatic fire, if someone is aiming at him, he may be able to predict the location that the bullet is going to be first and reflexively dodge from it. He can also quickly move in a burst of speed up to 100 meters at nearly 40 miles per hour. He rarely tires when running, able to go over an hour without feeling fatigue.

His strength is also modified. He can heft a boulder that weighs a ton with effort and move it several feet. His punches, when enhanced, can dent steel, destroy cinder blocks, and knock someone through a wall.

Satsui No Hado:

Ryu's power comes with a major drawback however. If he finds himself in a situation where he feels his life is threatened, Ryu can slip into a different form of his enhanced abilities known as Satsui no Hado (or just Evil Ryu). This form incorporates and doubles his skills and abilities, at the cost of his humanity. In this form, he glows red and takes on a darker aura, his skin turning colors as well as his hair and his body encased in a chi flame. In this form, he's ruthless and capable of killing, and cannot be stopped unless defeated in battle, which is no easy task.

Skills

Athletics:
Ryu is in peak human athletic condition. Between his training since youth and refusing to become comfortable in his humble existance, he's always weight training and practicing his skills. He can lift 400 lbs without using any of his Ki, and can easily do feats of parkour and climbing. He's an accomplished swimmer and can hold his breath for upwards of three minutes.

Jack of Many Trades:
As Ryu earns his way across the world and his travels, he's learned several valuable skills. He's been a dishwasher, a deckhand, a lumberjack. He's worked most menial jobs to earn his way. He's a wanderer at heart, though, and no job ever keeps for long, so he is always on the move. But he knows a little about a lot!

Languages:
Besides Japanese, Ryu can speak English as well. Though sometimes he trips over the words.

Martial Arts:

Ryu is a disciple of Ansatsuken-Kikouhou (A non-lethal version of the killing first style). Through his training and dedication to becoming a "True Martial Artist" he has over-come and shunned Ansatsuken-Satsui-no-Hadou (the murderous version of his style) and has incorporated many techniques of other styles into his own in an effort to continue his path of becoming a "True Martial Artist".

Resources

Hobo:
Ryu only carries a small amount of local currency and very little in the way of personal belongings. He lives a very humble lifestyle due to his teachings and training and spends most of his time earning (and learning) his way. But he's very good at hitch-hiking and catching rides as he needs them!

Multipass:

Ryu has a multipass to use on the Zeta tubes for unlimited travel. A gift from his sensei before he started his travels, it's one of the things he uses sparingly to get around. Most of the time he would rather experience life or 'rough it'.

Weaknesses

Lack of True Control:
While Ryu has access to an incredible source of power, he has yet to actually display true control over the Satsui no Hado. This is why as Evil Ryu, he becomes a ruthless berserker with no rational thought save for killing, regardless of what level of power he is using. He is constantly struggling to better himself and learn to control his inner demons, but it is a powerful pull to embrace the killing instinct.

Spotty Win-Loss Record:
Ryu hasn't always been the best. He's still not the best. He has his off-days. He can be defeated in combat. In friendly combat, this usually ends with a respect for someone's prowess and a promise for a rematch when he's had more time to train. In more dangerous situations, this may draw towards his vendetta and feeds into the Satsui no Hado form.

Vow of Poverty:
As a Buddhist, Ryu has little value in material things. He travels with only what he needs, he doesn't collect wealth. He would turn down any endorsement offers made to him. His goal is to train and become better, and material value would only get in his way. He keeps no home, he sleeps where he can find a place, and he makes due with what the world provides.

Wanderer:

Ryu has a wanderer's heart. He'll never stay in one place for long. If he's healing, he may stay longer, but it's usually for a few days and then Ryu's on the move again. It's not for a desire to stay - but the desire of learning, of experiencing overrides that want for secuity - and he feels safer when he's on the move.
