Profile

Isabel Kane is the granddaughter of the WWII hero Captain Terror, a contemporary of Captain America. Upon coming into possession of a pair of Shi'ar Exospex, she started on the path of following in her grandfather's footsteps. She has served time with the Avengers (thanks to her grandfather's ties), but as part of the condition for keeping the Exospex, she has a lifelong commitment to the Shi'ar military. She is currently considered on Reserve Status with them. Her return to Earth after the invasion necessitated some choices be made on where best to serve her planet, and she's chosen Alpha Flight as her best option.

Description

Isabel Kane is 5'8" tall, slender but with enough curves to be interesting. She gives the impression of being very athletic. She has brown hair that falls to just past her shoulders in waves and bright blue eyes that watch the world with an expression of wry amusement set in an oval face. Those eyes are enhanced by scuplted cheekbones and dark lashes set above a pert nose and an almost dainty chin. Her smile holds a wicked edge to it.

She wears a pair of slim-cut blue jeans and a velvety V-necked midnight-blue top with 3/4-length sleeves. A set of sturdy brown boots grace her feet.

History

Isabel Kane never thought she was terribly special. She was a normal kid growing up on a farm in Iowa. She went off to university in Colorado to study astronomy, because she loves the stars. But her grandfather, Dan Kane (Captain Terror), got sick and before she was quite finished with her degree, she had to come home to take care of him. Her grandfather was not pleased with this turn of events. Isabel spent much of her time dealing with his eccentricities on the farm - things like letting the animals out of their pens all the time because he didn't like to see them caged.

Her life changed on what appeared to be a perfectly average day when she picked up a set of Shi'ar Exospex out in the pasture. The Exospex had been dropped during a battle in the skies above Iowa. She tucked them in her pocket as a curiosity and went about her business, but... the Spex talked to her, invited her to put them on. A little leery of the idea, she showed them to Dan. He recognized them for what they were, and he encouraged her to do it. He believed she had greatness within her, and this was her chance to grab a life of adventure with both hands.

Isabel put them on and she learned that the Exospex allowed her to access superhuman powers, though only one at a time. She was both terrified and excited. Saying good-bye to her grandfather and father, she left Earth to go see what was out here for her. She joined the Imperial Guard to complete a term of military service for them as a condition of keeping the Exospex. When she returned to Earth a few months later on leave, it was to find that her grandfather on his deathbed. But he was so proud of her. He wanted her to walk in his footsteps, become a hero. And he gave her a card with Captain America's information on it, telling her that they'd been friends once and that the Avenger would help her; Dan had once saved his life. For a time, she worked with the Avengers, learning everything that Cap could teach her.

There were a number of battles and she met many people, one of whom was the X-Men's Cannonball. Sam Guthrie struck sparks off her in all the wrong ways for all the right reasons, and they began dating. But Isabel still had a duty to the Imperium, and she was recalled to active duty via an Imperial Alert from the Guard. She had no idea how long she'd be gone, so in her own mind, she and Sam were done.

The Guard's Smasher was killed, and Isabel was promoted to Smasher in his place. Her military duties kept her in the Shi'ar Guard for several years. When word filtered to the empire that Earth was being attacked, however, Isabel began to make arrangements to go home again. Her plans were interrupted by a summons from a superior officer, who told her that he had someone in custody that she needed to deal with. When she arrived at the holding facility, it was to find none other than Cannonball. Appalled, she quickly got to the bottom of his boom tube adventures and was told that the invasion attempt had been thwarted, which made it unnecessary for her to try to get special permission to leave the Guard.

She still had a few months left on her service commitment with the Guard, and Sam decided that he had both the time and desire to stick around. However, he was informed that in the Shi'ar society, he was not going to be allowed to do that. He argued that they were mates, which turned out to be both the wrong and the right thing to say. He would have to go into the battle arena and prove he was worthy of being the mate of a Commander in the Shi'ar Imperial Guard. He did, she joined him there, and they won.

According to Shi'ar custom, they are now married. This state of affairs is something they do NOT talk about. Although Sam insisted on a wedding ring, which she wears on a chain around her neck, Isabel doesn't consider being 'forced' into marriage as a real marriage. So as far as her mental state, it just doesn't exist. Like Star Trek 5.

With just a few weeks left in her military commitment, Isabel sent a message ahead to Captain America, asking if the Earth had a team formed to handle space threats - she knew that was a little outside the Avengers' purview. He sent the names of the Justice League and Alpha Flight's commanders to her, and after being away from Earth and the open country for so long, Isabel preferred to work with Alpha Flight if they'd have her - or rather both of them. Cannonball headed back to Earth to get them set up.

Personality

Isabel is something of a firecracker. She has a sharp, strategic brain and the military training now to back up her words when she has to. She is a fighter for those who can't fight for themselves. She protects the innocent. She's a big believer in the rule of law and she believes that the laws must apply to everyone but she also knows that sometimes the laws are not just and one must stand against them, which puts her into Cap's good graces.

Family is a huge thing for her. She quit college to take care of her grandfather, and she wants to make her father and grandfather proud of her. Grampa Dan wanted great things for her, and she struggles with the idea that doing anything mundane like running the farm would by definition be failing them. She will do anything that needs doing for her family and her team.

Isabel has a tendency toward a smart mouth. When people start talking crap, she will fire back with the best retorts that pop into her head, fully intending to mess with the person she's baiting. As a general rule, it's all in good fun and snark, but occasionally that wit can be laser-sharp and used to verbally cut someone to shreds in just a few words. Those wounds are the hardest to heal, so she has learned over time to temper that reaction somewhat. But like most people with a temper, she loses the battle to contain it occasionally.

Abilities

ENERGY PROJECTION
The goggles can be used to fire laser-like energy beams that can cause or repel physical or energy damage, similar to the eyebeams wielded by Cyclops. If these are used for too long at a time or too much over the course of time, it is possible that the wearer could suffer damage to their retinas.

ENVIRO-SUIT
The goggles are their own self-contained life support system. When in space (or in other environments where it might be needed), they extend a field around the wearer that insulates against the environment, protects from radiation and pressure, and allows the wearer to breathe and move easily.

FLIGHT
The goggles allow the wearer flight capabilities in and out of atmosphere. See Superhuman Speed for maneuverability information and speeds.

INTERSTELLAR TRAVEL
The goggles allow the wearer to fly through hyperspace without the need of a ship.

PENTA-VISION
The goggles give the wearer not only X-ray vision but also telescopic and microscopic vision.

SUPERHUMAN DURABILITY
The wearer is given the durability to withstand tremendous amounts of punishment from high-caliber bullets to rockets, torpedoes, and even hits from people like the Hulk or Superman. That is NOT to say the wearer will not take damage, however. It will just be lessened by orders of magnitude from what most people would suffer.

SUPERHUMAN SPEED
The goggles allow the wearer to move and react at superspeed both on the ground and in the air (or in space). Because of this aspect, Isabel has had extensive training in this kind of movement and she has a level of finesse only seen in speedsters.

SUPERHUMAN STRENGTH
The goggles offer the wearer significantly enhanced strength. This is generally used in lifting, throwing, hitting things hard enough to smash them (hence the name Smasher).

Skills

FARMING & BUSINESS
Isabel was raised on a farm in Iowa. She has a solid working knowledge of what it takes to manage animals and crop cycles, read the land, and plan ahead for weather conditions that could damage crops or cause harm to the animals. She also, thanks to this, has a working knowledge of how to run a small business and the challenges that come with it from helping her father keep the books for their farm. In addition, she's learned some interesting agricultural science in the Shi'ar empire that might be translatable to Earth crops, if the scientists got together.

HEAVY SCIENCE
She didn't finish her degree, but Isabel has a solid background in maths, physics, and chemistry. Although some of the things she learned in her courses were particular to earth, most astronomy information is not. This translates into a good grasp of gravity wells, flight maneuvers in space (no friction) and in atmospheric conditions (friction), and she's learned a great deal about hyperspace since going to the Shi'ar Empire.

MILITARY TRAINED
Isabel has had five years of training in the Imperial Guard. She has risen to the rank of a squad commander, with 20 people under her command. The Imperial Guard is an elite fighting force; she has been trained in all the requisite fighting skills and Shi'ar weaponry, ships, and tactics necessary to handle combat both in and out of the atmosphere as well as ground-based combat. She's not the best soldier there ever was - she is merely well trained and good at her job.

Resources

AVENGERS
Although she was only there for a few months, Smasher put in her time with the team. If she needed them, she could make a couple of calls and request their help. Captain America (in her mind, if not in his own) has fulfilled the debt to her grandfather.

EXOSPEX
The ExoSpex goggles are Shi'ar technology that allows the wearer access to a number of superhuman abilities. They can only be accessed one at a time, however. (See Abilities) The goggles also allow access to various forms of advanced communications, warning alerts, and planetary and interplanetary navigation.

FLIGHT PATCHES
These patches are standard-issue gear for all Imperial Guard members who do not personally have the power of flight. They are installed in her bodysuit/uniform.

SHI'AR IMPERIAL GUARD
Isabel is still a member in good standing of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard, one of the most elite fighting forces in the galaxy. Though she is currently listed in its Reserves, having served out her primary required term of service, she still retains her rank and position as The Smasher of the Guard. Should she ever need it, this rank and position allow her access to a great deal of the vast resources of the Shi'ar military.

SMALL SAVINGS
Isabel has had jobs and always saved her money, so she does have a small savings account put away on Earth. She also has her salary from the Shi'ar Imperial Guard (which doesn't really translate to Earth), which she only draws when she's recalled for duty to them. Still, that's money put away on both worlds. She also has the intention of taking the knowledge of Shi'ar agriculture practices that she's observed and learned to either Stark or another agri-industry to see if they're interested.

Weaknesses

FAMILY
Her father is the only one left to her, and Isabel loves him. She keeps in regular contact by phone (or comms gear when she's in space and it can be arranged). They live their own lives now, but should someone want to force her into something, all they'd have to do is take her father.

ONLY HUMAN
Without the Exospex, Isabel truly is only human. She has the strength, endurance, and vitality of any other woman who is good shape. She runs and lifts weights to keep at a personal peak performance level, and her knowledge of fighting tactics and Shi'ar weaponry are certainly available to her. But should the Exospex be broken or taken from her, she is definitely breakable.

SHI'AR MILITARY
This is a positive thing, but it also has its flaws. Isabel can be called back to active duty in the Shi'ar Empire at any time for the rest of her life (or until she is physically incapable of performing her duties - she is, after all, only human). There is no option to refuse this call, and there is no limit to the length of time she might be required to remain on active duty if called upon.
