Profile

The former head of the Robotics Department at SFIT, Robert Callaghan was well respected in his field and had pioneered a number of unique technologies. Perhaps none the sort to change the world, but he seemed quite content with his lot in life - at least until his daughter disappeared. His grief and anger festered to the point of making the choice to steal a prospective student's technology and use it to seek revenge - only to accidentally kill said student's brother in the process, and setting off a chain reaction that would lead that boy and a handful of others in to becoming the Big Hero 6 to stop the figure later dubbed as 'Yokai' by the newspapers. But not only was he stopped, his daughter was found and rescued as well - leading a repentant Callaghan to accept the consequences of his actions and be imprisoned. The question is, though, is repentance merely accepting judgement - or is it actively working to make up for one's crimes?

Description:

The man is tall and well-built; he may not be about to win any strength contests anytime soon, but he's far from skinny. Still, the muscle seems modest, neatly tucked under what clothing he has on at any given time. And considering his age - suggested by the wrinkled lines in his face, the greying of his hair? - he seems to take the work needed to stay fit like this. Even the blue eyes seem aged, as though he's seen his share of troubles that have left their mark. Still, there is a gentleness to him, and his demeanor, at least most of the time - every so often something harder and harsher emerges, if only for a moment.

History

History1:
Robert Callaghan was always the sort of child who preferred robots to people. Even coming from a military background, his own service in the army was merely to fund his schooling, and he was well on his way to his Masters when he bumped in to the woman who would become his wife - while she was in the middle of deriding his work. Somehow, opposites attracted, and they fell in love and had a daughter, Abigail. The two of them were everything Robert could have wanted in life - and when his wife died in a car accident, he was absolutely devestated. Nonetheless, he persisted for his daughter, obtaining a PhD in Robotics and pioneering his own Laws as well as working with his fellows on developing new technologies. He wasn't about to become famous in anything but his field, but he was content, and he was happy.

Even when he took a step back and began teaching, he was happy - and when Abigail became part of a project known as Silent Sparrow, meant to pioneer widespread portal technology, he was estatic. His own skills became essential to the project...but when it was demonstrated, everything went wrong. Abigail was lost, and a grief-stricken Robert blamed the lead, Alistair Krei, for the problems. After an initial outburst, he buried his rage and grief deep inside where it would fester for the next few years, even as he focused more on teaching and bringing up the next generation of students to...be not like Krei. Anything but Krei.

When a student brought in his brother, Hiro in an attempt to steer him away from bot-fighting, Robert saw potential in the young man and gave him his own style of encouragement - a sly challenge to participate in the upcoming Student Showcase. And suffice it to say, that young man's invention absolutely stunned Robert...to the point of touching on that rage and grief, and prompting him to stage a fire to fake his own death and steal that invention. Despite the fact that Hiro's brother perished in the fire - going after Robert, no less - Robert pushed forwards, convincing himself that he had to continue or else everything would be for nothing.

History2:

Stealing materials, Robert replicated the design a thousandfold until he had a veritable army at his disposal. An attempt to scare Hiro off only resulted in other students getting involved, and he chased them off a pier in an attempt to truly deter them...only for them to come back in supersuits, dedicated to stopping him as they (correctly) believed he was responsible for the fire. Nonetheless, they were startled when they discovered it was none other than their former professor. Things went to hell, Robert escaped with what he came for, and prepared his final strike on Krei Tech for revenge - using none other than the same portal tech that had gone wrong so long ago.
Once again, the students intervened - but this time, through trying to reach out through the common ground of loss. It might have worked, if Krei hadn't opened his mouth, and a fight promptly ensued as Callaghan tried to take them out of the picture. In the midst of it, he was rendered defenseless, and all seemed to be about to tie up - except for the fact that one of the heroes, a robot (the last creation of Hiro's brother, no less), found a trace of life in the portals, and it and Hiro promptly went inside. Only Hiro came out...but with the pod containing Abigail, who had entered a form of sleep. Stunned by the fact she was still alive, Robert submitted to the authorities, the weight of everything he had done finally crashing down upon him.
Pleading guilty to all counts, he was placed in San Francisco's prison system to serve his sentences. While he was already getting old and the length would effectively be until the end of his life, Robert held no plans of escape or otherwise subverting the systems. Indeed, when Hiro came to ask him for information, he gave it freely - as well as an apology, even though he knew it was not enough. It was clear Hiro hadn't forgiven him, but he at least accepted it...as a start. Though Robert couldn't help but think of what else would truly be needed in order for him to make up for his crimes...

Personality

Personality:

It's important to note that Robert Callaghan very much considers himself a good person. He is not overly self-righteous about it, but he is firm in the belief that he has contributed to this world and contributed well. Whether it be his service in the military, his post-service scientific work, or his work at the university, he seems ultimately proud of his life and has only so many regrets. (No more than the average person, at least.)
However, he has undeniably committed actions that are not hallmarks of a good person. He has been ruthless and outright cruel, at times, but through it all he never seemed to hold any doubt or guilt. It was not until the very end of his rampage that he showed an inkling of regret; nonetheless, these sets of events have the potential to fuel 'the end justifies the means' sort of mindset, and were Callaghan ever given a new motive to wreck havoc, he has the potential to once more become a force of outright wrath.

One does wonder, though, if he would continue to be willing to use such means; it can be assumed that many of his ruthless actions were fueled by a sort of rage-hatred-desperate need for revenge, the fear that he'd never have such a chance again and that he had to do whatever he did in order to finish it. Presumably, if he felt strongly enough about it, or otherwise was pushed?...history can absolutely repeat itself. It can be assumed that the groundwork has been/was laid with his first stint as Yokai.

During a particularly emotional moment there may or may not be regret, and it's wrong to say he'd take pleasure in any of his violence; quite the opposite, he is a good man, and doesn't/wouldn't enjoy any of it. It's something to be dealt with and done, as cleanly/expediently as possible; Callaghan/Yokai is even more dangerous because of it, because there's no thrill, but it's the vehement belief that this needs to be done.
And that is one of the things that make him the most terrifying. Because there is no sadism, there are no games, there is only action, response, and dealing with it. Regrets, if any, come later.

In fact, one can presume that in some cases he wouldn't be so much 'unwilling' to kill as deem it unnecessary; if given a crowd of terrified civilians, for example. He might make a show to get them out of the way first before going through, assuming there was the opportunity; he did make a show, at Krei Tech, dramatically appearing over the crowd and then going for only Krei, ignoring everyone else. After all, good men do not target innocents; good men do what is necessary, and are then done.

And really, when you get over all that whole darker side of him? He's not a /bad/ man. His students held a high amount of respect for him, and seemed honestly astonished by the fact that he was Yokai; it can be drawn, then, that he was darned good teacher. His attitude is generally the strict-but-kind sort; mild amounts of sass/sarcasm, but never outwardly offensive with it. The kind of teacher who would single you out as an 'example', but make you laugh, too, because you really should have known better than to give him that kind of opening.

Skills

Intelligence:
Of all things at his disposal, Yokai's most valuable asset at this point is his own intelligence. Robert Callaghan himself is - well, was - a respected professor, carrying a PhD in Robotics and mentoring students in multiple disciplines. Having invented his own Laws of Robotics as well as the Callaghan-Catmull spline, he famous mostly in the robotics field but otherwise relatively unknown to the world at large - and he's content to be that way. Nonetheless, his achievements are nothing to sneeze at; nor is the fact that his mind is still sharp, still open to learning, and still able to look at situation and, essentially, Science The Heck Out Of It.

Military Training:

Callaghan may have only served a short stint in the Army - mostly to fund his schooling - but he's carried no small amount of the experience with him to present day. He maintains a fitness regime that keeps him in excellent shape for his age, and is somewhat familiar (if rusty) with many firearms and other such military equipment. Still, he moved in to being an Engineering Officer as opposed to being on the frontlines, and never saw live combat firsthand.

Resources

Body Armor:
The body armor Yokai wears is light, meant more to absorb punches as opposed to reflect bullets or anything worse. While bullets might be slowed, they'll still certainly bruise and be felt; anything more than that, including super-powered punches, may as well be hitting him straight-on for how much(/little) it absorbs.

Bracers:

Yokai's bracers are, at this point, his primary tool. Mind, there's quite a few tools in them, which is why he relies on them so heavily. Armored and shielded, they are surprisingly light for the amount of tech put in to them. In addition, he is proficient with using them as weapons, striking with the forearm as a bludgeoning strike. Even so, he'd prefer not to get that close in combat at all.

LAUNCHER
The launcher (present in the right bracer) is able to fire either darts, a grappling line, or small canisters such as smoke or gas. Its range is approximately 25-30m, depending on the type of ammunition.

DARTS
Yokai has a few darts of various types on him at any given time; these generally are laced with some sort of tranquilizer or nonlethal poison.

METAL LINE
While thin, the coiled metal line - approximately 45m of such - is capable of supporting about 300kg. While it can be detached to serve as cable all on its own, there is a retracting apparatus which allows it to draw back in - and, hypothetically, someone else with it. In addition, there is a function which allows it to electrify - the bracer's shielding protects the wearer from suffering the effects.

HOLOSCREENS
The left bracer has a computer built in which can project its screens holographically to allow Yokai to pull up and input data, display three-dimensional images such as blueprints, as well as perform other functions you would expect a standard computer to perform. (Yes, Solitaire is on it.) It can connect to other systems as well, either wirelessly or through a wired connection. Bear in mind that its ability to hack is solely based on the operator's skill; in Yokai's case, he's nothing particularly special, though he knows the basics of spoofing and tapping in to a local wireless connection so long as it has only the basics of security.

Weaknesses

Abigail:
Abigail Callaghan is, above all else, Robert's reason for living. Had she not been rescued, there's only so much he would have had left for him after dealing with Krei. The fact that she is alive gives him hope, and gives him a reason to look forwards to the future of seeing her freely once again - however distant it may be. And were she threatened, there's no telling what he would do - whether in an attempt to save her, or to hurt those who dared lay a finger on his child.

Big Hero 6:
The Big Hero 6 were instrumental in taking down Yokai - due in no small part to him being the one at fault for what led to their formation in the first place. And while some might be embittered, Robert is...actually grateful, and not just because of Abigail's rescue. Suffice it to say that were they ever to ask him for help, he would give it, no questions asked - even if that help wasn't returned. And were they to somehow stand in his way, he would very much hesitate to go through them...if only for a few seconds.

Criminal Record:
Faking your death is one thing. Faking your death through an arson which ends up killing an innocent is quite another. Robert Callaghan is looking at least two consecutive life sentences - one without parole - for that and a number of other crimes, and pled guilty to most if not all of them. Suffice it to say that even were something to change in his situation, he can never go back to his former life.

Yokai:

First and foremost - Yokai is not a split personality. Yokai is merely Callaghan dropping all pretense, dropping everything that holds him back, and allowing his anger and pain to take the forefront - and boy, there's a sizeable amount of it. Arguably his 'inner demon', Yokai is everything that Callaghan once considered himself unable to be - powerful, unstoppable, and most of all? *Able to act*. Wearing the mask is almost like a drug that gives him a focus and drive, and it's just as addicting to be in that mindset. While Callaghan since recognizes that he might need a bit of therapy to deal with this dark side of himself, the fact is that Yokai exists, and Yokai is very much always present in his mind - ready to claw its way back out should Callaghan be given a reason to give in.
