Ryu The New York Police Department tries really hard to keep Central Park clear of vagrants, using a combonation of outreach programs and undercover operations. They also have another problem that involves undercover ops - gangs that have been wandering around the park, pulling off muggings and robberies and such. One group of them was spotted in the park this evening, the Abandoned. Survelliance units had been keeping an eye on them as they run ops.

Unfortunately, it seems that they have found a target. They're currently surrounding a male figure that was underneath a walkpath tunnel bridge trying to get some rest. A white duffle bag is set to the side as they jostle the man awake. "Get up! You're tonight's entertainment!" one of the Abandoned leers at the man as they yank on the blanket.
Sara Pezzini Sara Pezzini's here in the park too, helping her colleagues out. Actually she's just walking the park, mostly since it's on her way home after the shift she's been doing. She's still got her police equipment on, and under her jacket. Stepping back onto the path, Sara's still got her phone on her and fires off a text. Looking over the group, Sara stays put. Not her pllace to....ah she hates bullies.

"Hey!" Sara calls, and has her jacket unzipped. There's the bulge of her holster and pistol in it, and her belt. She's got her badge in her pocket, too. "Back off that homeless guy" Sara calls, "I won't warn you again"
Ryu A couple of gangbangers look over at Sara and one of them wolf-whistles at her. "Are you wanted to get lost with the Abandoned, babe?" Yes, that was an actual pick up line they created. "We'll get to you right after we deal with our civic duty of getting rid of bums!"

With that, one of the gangers finally manages to wake up the guy as he yanks off the blanket. Though there's a blanket is puled away and reveals a worn karate gi as Ryu gets to his feet.

"I did not mean to disturb your walk. If you would like to go around?" he asks them politely, the hint of Asian accent heavy in his voice.

"Oh listen to this guy! Disturbing us!" That brings laughter from one of the five gangbangers. "Come on, man, you're completly disturbing!" And he gives Ryu a hard push. "Your kind is disturbing!"
Sara Pezzini Sara shakes her head at the group, "Get moving" she says, in that no nonsense cop way of speaking. She is waiting for her colleagues to come over and help. It's just her, and these guys, and the karate guy. Sara's seen enough karate films to not mess with the karate guy. Instead she locks eyes with the one one wolf whistling. She pulls out hers out her phone, shooting off a text to her colleagues. Group texts are wonderful things....and she keeps stepping forward, phone back in pocket. She's watching the group, and looks to Ryu. "Are they bothering you?" she asks, a few paces away.
Ryu "No, I seemed to have been in their way.." Ryu starts to say.. just to get shoved hard by one of the gang members. "Hey! Get lost, karate punk!" A few of them start doing faux karate moves they saw on a movie. And making karate like noises. Waaaaa. Hoooooo. It's really embarassing. But then one of them is pulling a knife. "I said wait your turn!" the wolf-whistler growls, now that she's taken out a phone.

And things escalate quickly. A couple of others are taking out knives as well.

The wolf-whistler rushes at Sara, intent on knocking that phone from her hands, because he's in no mood to be a live social media star. Another steps towards Ryu to try to throw a lazy and horribly telegraphed haymaker, that he manages to dodge quickly.
Sara Pezzini "Hold it right there" Sara says. Sure, she could go for her gun. But that'd mean paperwork. Instead she steps out of the way given he's rushing at her. She shakes her head, "I said hold it right there!" she commands. badge out now and visible. NYPD. Great. Sara's gonna be on the media too. Still this time she didn't start it it. Instead, tendrils are creeping along the back of her hands.
Ryu No, she didn't start it, but it has indeed started. And now Sara is pulling out her badge, and the gang-bangers are concentrating on her. "Crap, it's a cop!" one of them yells, as he's reaching to pull a gun from behind his back to prepare to get the drop on Sara.

Or he would have if there wasn't a certain shout of, "HADOKEN!" from behind the guy as a bright blue glow leaps from Ryu and strikes the man in the back, knocking him down.

"He's one of the freaks!" cries out one of the guys, and know they're torn between Sara and Ryu, as the guy with the gun is down, the gun sliding on the sidewalk to end up near her.
Sara Pezzini Sara's moving on instinct, now. She sees him go for the gun and has her own gun drawn and aimed at him. "Police. Put your gun down" she shouts, then....he's on the ground, the gun sliding. Sara kicks it out of reach and has her gun trained on the guy Ryu knocked down. "Stay down, the rest of you, drop your weapons" Sara commands. She'll deal with Ryu later, mostly since he did help her out with the gangbangers. She's hoping more police show up soon. One Sara vs gangbangers and a guy who can glow blue? Great. Not great odds. The Witchblade isn't quick enough this time to stop Sara from doing her police procedures. She's so not cut out for this...she's a detective after all. She's a detective and not a beat cop with a badge and a radio and a gun. The radio's been returned to the shelf they sit on. The gun though....well if she fires, that's paperwork. If she gets shot. That's both paperwork and the Witchblade going on a killing spree that'd make a lot of Gotham villains green with envy.

So Sara's aiming toward the gangbangers. "NYPD, drop your weapons" Sara calls again. Where's her backup? She hears her heart hammering in her ears. Great....
Ryu Now that Sara has her gun drawn, the gang-bangers have a choice. They could drop their weapons and surrender, like she said. They could all try to attack her en masse, which might end up very messily. Or..

They could all take off running in every direction, dispersing like cockroaches when the lights are turned on, trying to scatter and make it impossible for Sara to chase after them all. Little do they know they're running into the arms of the officers that are closing in, but that's how it is.

Ryu glances to Sara, and he tilts his head. "You're conflicted." he offers to her quietly. "Do you need assistance?" Not with the guy on the ground.
Sara Pezzini Great. Paperwork incoming. Sara holsters her gun and nods to Ryu with a shrug, "I'm okay" she says as the officers are doing their thing, and she's giving her side of things. Thankfully, she didn't shoot anyone. Like she needs the time off, there's better ways to get time off, really. Like...putting in for vacation time. Which she totally will do when she gets back to her desk. But first...

"I'm okay" she repeats to Ryu. "Are you alright though? You threw yourself into the thick of it, so thanks" she nods, there's the tricky issue of should she question Ryu now or let him go? She figures the latter, she'll just write it off as he was scared and self defense. They had guns, it's clear in her eyes after all. Instead she looks to Ryu, and pulls out a pen and paper. "Mind telling me what happened? For official reasons, that is" she adds having witnessed it all...but paperwork and procedures dictate she needs to go through proper channels. So she is
Ryu Ryu lifts a brow for a moment. "The first step to enlightenment is to acknowledge there is a light." he offers cryptically to Sara. But one cannot help one that doesn't ask for it, so Ryu relaxes his stance. "I was sleeping here." he starts, gesturing to his blanket and his bag. "And was awoken by those young men that had decided to harass the pair of us. Though I could understand their reasoning." His shoulders rise in a brief shrug as he stands there as cold as it is in a sleeveless gi.

"I saw one of the men preparing to draw a gun on you so I reacted." he gives her a slight smile. "I did not want to see you harmed, though I imagine you could handle yourself."
Sara Pezzini Sara's taking notes, brief, scribbled notes at that. "Thank you" she says. Both for the notes and helping out. "No no, shooting me is not adviseable" she offers, the nagging feeling the Witchblade gives that Ryu isn't totally normal. She's brushing it off, he did after all help her out, so the Witchblade can relax. Surely he wouldn't hurt her?
Ryu Why would he? She's not a sanctioned fighter. And he doesn't go around asking for fights willy-nilly. "Was there anything else I need to do, or may I return to my rest?" Ryu asks the striking detective, since it seems that she's about done with the interview. It appears that he plans to return to his place under the bridge to get some rest.
Sara Pezzini Sara smiles, handing over a card with her number on it. "Oh, no. No. If there's anything else you think of, don't hesitate to call, though I'd suggest you stay somewhere with a warm bed and four walls, there's plenty of good hotels around here" she says, a friendly word of advice. Sara's not a fan of sleeping rough and Sara's more than willling to help out. "I could call a cab to take you to a hotel if you like?" she offers. "Though if you want to sleep here, I'll let the officers know not to move you along"

Hey. Two favors from Pezzini. That doesn't happen often.
Ryu "I cannot afford a hotel. And the ground is comfortable. I have cover over my head. It is more than adequate." Ryu responds with a light chuckle. "I do not spend much time indoors." he admits as he looks to her. "I thank you for your generous offer, however." The compactly built Asian doesn't seem to want to put anyone out. He pulls the blanket back around his shoulders, an old military surplus blanket of thick and coarse wool.
Sara Pezzini Sara nods. "I hear you" she offers, "If you want to stay here, just let the officers know you're here and I said it's okay" she nods, zipping up her jacket. "I do need to head home though so" she offers, the look in her eyes showing her concern for Ryu being out here. Still. Anyone that can jump into a situation and help out is worth it.
Ryu "Thank you, Officer...?" Ryu trails off, not catching the woman's name. And then he pauses. He considers her again. And then he asks..

"Would you like to get a cup of coffee sometime?"
Sara Pezzini "Pezzini. Detective Sara Pezzini" she says and brightens up at the idea of coffee. "Sure,I know a few good coffee places in Manhattan and around the East and West sides" she explains with a nod conferring with a few officers. "The'll leave you be, and thank you for helping out, again" Sara says with a genuine smile. Oh, the rumor mill's going to love this. Pez goes for coffee with guy who glows blue and saves her butt from gangbangers. Jake McCarthy's gonna probably tease her relentlessly, go figure. Sara's not put off by that though. Who knows, it may be the start of a beautiful friendship
Ryu "I am Ryu." No last name offered. Just Ryu. And knowing that Sara will probably check up on the mystery man before they go out for coffee, she'll find his file easily. Especially with the picture of him. Winner of the last street fighter tournament. No known last name. No known address. He disappeared after the last tournament - she is the first one to get eyes on him since he won.

He offers her a grateful smile. "You can find me here, then." Phone? None. "And it was my pleasure to help a member of the law." then he adds. "And beautiful as well." There's a slight smile as he moves to take his place on the piece of cardboard he had folded out to sleep on. And sits down in the lotus position.
Sara Pezzini Sara will, and she's liable to take a lot of notes too. Beautiful? Maybe, in her pin up model ways. So, she's making mental notes too, and nods. "Alright, finding you here, that works. I can drive over from my condo. So, Ryu, I'll look forward to coffee"

Because, really, she's not got enough time for herself or dates. Is it even a date? Maybe, she'll hedge her bets andsee how it goes.
