Lydda Jath So what do you do if you've been thrown back in time for reasons you can't quite remember, wind up arriving years later than your comrades, and then get caught up in a devastating attack by almost-demonic entities? If you're a normal person you kick back and relax.

Legionnaires aren't normal people.

OK, then, a normal Legionnaire will at least catch up with their comrades and get a bit of relaxation time before the next crisis.

Lydda Jath is not a normal Legionnaire.

She can't be. She was a multiple-time reject of the Legion of Super-Heroes and as such is driven to constantly keep her skills and value up so she doesn't get rejected again. She instead gets back, eats, sleeps, wakes up, eats, and then does what she does much of the time: she trains.

So she's in her favourite place: the hardlight gym, replaying that last situation so she can hone her tactical ability and save more lives and property.

All while in simulated sunlight so she has no powers.

"End simulation," she says as her scenario fails. "Start over."
Polar Boy "You know," a voice says softly from the entrance to the gym, "some might start to worry that you may be losing your edge. Or maybe even your powers."

Brek Bannin steps into the simulated light and grins.

"But we both know better, don't we?" He looks around and sighs wistfully, a thin trail of cold air escaping his mouth.

"We know we have to keep proving ourselves. That we can't take any of this for granted. All the same, though.." Brek shrugs and offers a smile, "the only thing I never fail at is getting impressed by my teammates. You and the rest of the Subs most of all."
Lydda Jath "Brek!" Lydda's dour face (after what was her fifth defeat in the scenario) brightens up instantly on seeing her former co-leader of the Subs. She rushes across, cancelling the simulation as she steps out of its bounds, to hug him in greeting. "It's not just that," she adds. Then chuckles to herself. "But that's a big part, yes. You have to be the best of the best to be a Legionnaire and we former Substitutes in particular have to be beyond reproach."

She stands back to look Brek up and down. "You look older," she says wistfully. "I missed years, didn't I? I'm sorry I wasn't here to be with us all. I don't know why I was thrown not as far back, but I'm here now. Tell me ... how are things? Who are we dealing with? And when do you need me to turn out their lights and banish them into darkness?"
Polar Boy Stretching up on his toes to hug Lydda, Brek squeezes his teammate for a moment before releasing. "It's true," he says. "I feel older, too. Not being able to get us home ... it's been difficult for some of us to handle. Most of us, really." After a moment, he adds quietly, "Probably all of us."

But then Brek shakes his head and offers a playful slow punch to Lydda's shoulder. "But now things are looking brighter than ever with you here. Ah, figuratively speaking, of course. Apparently there's an old saying: 'it's always darkest just before dawn.' I think, right now, it's good to know you're here to make use of it."

He leans against one of the gym walls. "Who aren't we dealing with? The whole sprocking galaxy's a splintered, chaotic mess. We're stretched thin--and that's saying something when we're not the only force in the cosmos trying to keep peace and order. Brandt's dream is still waiting to be dreamed and realized, and I'm going to make sure we don't mess that up a thousand years in the past, no matter what."
Lydda Jath "You have me in the shield wall, Brek. Tell me where there's injustice, dishonour, or evil, and I will take it down." Lydda smiles at the punch to her shoulder, launching a 'counter-attack' of her own that moves at a slug's pace. "Brandt's dream is alive and well here, I'm sure. People just need a reminder and a beacon of hope."

She sighs, looking back at her training routine.

"I can do this later. And ... I was on Earth a while before I found the cruiser. There's plenty of injustice and chaos there to practice against. I certainly won't get bored waiting for trouble. I just have to go out when I'm strongest and it will find me."
Polar Boy Brek nods and takes a deep breath. "Yeah, I've learned all about the trouble on Earth, too. And you're right--we can't wait to act because there's always something to take care of."

He rubs his cheek with his ice hand. "I've been thinking about that, actually, since you've arrived. You remember when, as members of the Substitutes, we would act in secret to help the Legion? I think there may be merit in a covert approach from time to time. Doing the work that ... some would say ... is only fit for rejects."

Brek grins. "Like you said, trouble will find us regardless. So you in?"
Lydda Jath Lydda doesn't hesitate, not even for an instant. Her hands out for the Legionairre arm-clasp. "In."

Not that anybody would ever doubt her commitment to the cause. Few are as driven as Dark Girl.

"It's not our fellow Legionairres we're going to shadow this time, of course. So who will be monitor and help from behind the scenes? I've heard of a 'Justice League' here, but also of an 'Avengers' group and a group called 'SHIELD' and ... so many groups that fight evil yet somehow don't band together. Maybe we can shadow some of them?"
Polar Boy With bright eyes, Brek nods and clasps Lydda's arm. "Cool," he replies.

In response to Lydda's questions, Polar Boy clears his throat. "Only 'some'? Given how much trouble's out there--I would suggest that we shadow any and all who need our help. We'll just want to be unseen and unknown. Nothing too difficult for a pair who've been there and done that more than a few times."

Brek sighs, his shoulders relaxing. "I'll admit that I wasn't sure you'd be up for it. I shouldn't ever have wondered. Thank you." He nods to the gym controls. "I'll let you be. I know you'll want to be in as prime condition as possible for the work ahead. I'll be doing the same in a bit myself."
Lydda Jath "I'm always up for things!" Lydda protests, laughing. "You may have started the Substitute Heroes, but I was with you from the start! If we do things in secret, we do things in secret!"

She shakes her head, still laughing.

"It *has* been years for you hasn't it if you've forgotten how stubborn I am!"

Her eyes glance at Polar Boy, teasing and grinning. "But it's good to see you again. I hope I can bring more hope to the world and the Legion now that I'm here."
Polar Boy "The evil out there will never know what hit it, Night Girl," Brek says cheerfully. "The only way today could get any better was if Dag, Staq, or Ulu were here, too. But we'll kick butt in their honor ... until we're all back together again."

He heads back toward the door before turning and raising a fist. "Long live the Legion! And long live the Substitutes!"
Lydda Jath "Long the Legion, longer the Substitutes!" Lydda replies. And she seems serious about the order. "Because they move a bit slower," she adds with a giggle. "But they'll get there in the end!"
