Owner Pose
Mina Harker Coney Island is uniquely beautiful, but especially so at dusk. The sun has mostly set, and the lights of the attractions are beginning to flicker on. It's like the park is slowly awakening as the old-fashioned colored lights blink to life.

Along the boardwalk, Mina is dressed for the cooler weather in jeans and a leather jacket, with her ever-present red scarf wrapped about her throat and fluttering in the breeze. She's waiting here to meet someone, and in the mean time she's focusing her attention on a traditional coney dog. And a beer, of course.

Mina is fully aware that her contact asked to meet in such a very public place because he is, quite delicately putting it, a thief and a liar. What Mina doesn't know is that her contact has promised a certain trinket to another buyer as well. A piece of rare technology that, dispite being over a century old, still represents a danger to the modern world.
Katherine Odd technology, and especially dangerous technology, is something that Katherine is always interested in finding. She needs to identify whatever this thing is and whatever it happens to be the person's just looking for money. Money is something that's quite readily available for Katherine since most money today is transfered as data not cold-hard-cash. With that in mind, Katherine is walking along the beach edge. She has no shoes on, but otherwise is dressed in her tight black slacks and deep plunging top without seemingly being concerned about the weather. No shivers or goosebumps.

When she arrives at the location that was given to her she looks around for a moment before her attention falls on Mina. She looks over the other woman until she looks at the dog, and at that point she just very easily moves to a bench in the exact location she was given and sits down. She stares off into the distance and waits, not fidgetting not looking around, but extremely stoic patience. Unaware that there might be another buyer, she's more just waiting for the person to show up with the goods.
Mina Harker Mina Murray lifts the coney dog to take a bite, gaze flickering around automatically in search of the contact. She pauses mid-bite when she spots Katherine. Whether it's the bare feet, the tight slacks, or the plunging neckline, she is quite clearly distracted by the woman. Eyes meet and she offers a small smile. Then she takes the bite.

Both women had agreed to meet a 'Charlie', whose telephone voice carried a thick Jersey accent. A shortish, stout man wearing a worn blazer and a newsie cap arrives, flashing a yellow-toothed grin. Looking from one to the other, he offers. "Hi, ladies. Now that we're all here, let the bidding begin. Eh?"
Katherine There's the arrival of the man, and Katherine comes to 'life' again. She smiles in response to Mina before looking over at Charlie. "Excellent, you have the same voice, modulated for the microphone of the telephone you were on." She stands up slowly and then offers, "First, it would be necessary to identify that you have the actual object for which you claimed. And second, it would be required to actually look at said technological object. I would not buy a 3d printed thing that has a 'good story' behind it." She looks over to the other 'lady' that is being indicated, "Ah, you were then then here for the same reason. That helps in my analysis. Thank you." Grinning largely she smiles in Mina's direction before turning her attention back to Charlie where she waits on him to produce the object.
Mina Harker Mina Murray rises as well, setting the remains of the coney dog on the bench. She allows herself a sip of beer before acknowledging Charlie. "It's quite doubtful that he actually has it -with- him, my dear." the woman offers in a thick, antiquated British accent. "If he's done his homework, then he knows that opening a negotiation without holding something in reserve is a losing proposition. Am I right, Charlie?" Dark brows lift and she adds. "But I'm afraid I must also insist on seeing the artifact first."

The man grins almost sheepishly, but he nods to Mina. "I'm afraid you've got me dead-to-rights, Miss. I was hoping to discuss terms first, of course. But since you're both insisting..." He pulls out a cell phone and pushes a button. "Bring it." No sooner does he turn off the phone than a pair of muscle-bound bruisers approach. One is carrying what looks like a shoebox.
Katherine Looking over to Mina, Katherine shows a bit of a confusd facial expression, "I indicated I would be here, and be willing to pay money. I do not understand how it would be problematic to come with the artifact." And then she looks back to Charlie, not realizing anything about these 'criminal enterprises'. When the cellphone turns on, she actually looks in the direction of the bruisers even before they start to approach. Without any visible signs, Katherine starts scanning across any spectrums of analysis she can to see if it's giving off radiation, signals, etc.

"Have you been able to identify any sort of radiation coming off of the device? A beacon, or homing signal?" Katherine wonders, without looking at either party. She chuckles a bit though to Mina, "You may have to help me through this process then. Seeing as I normally acquire my information in other ways. Thank you for the aid in getting it to be brought out." And she otherwise then waits for the shoebox to come to them and presumably be opened.
Mina Harker Mina Murray purses her lips, squinting at the other woman. "As did I." she declares. "It was never his intention, I believe, to negotiate in good faith." Looking from one bruiser to the other, she offers. "You should have brought more help, Charlie..."

Charlie and his 'associates' wait a moment for the women to conclude their conversation. Mina turns towards Katherine. "Although we have been brought together as potential competitors, I do have the sense that we can be of a common purpose. Can we agree to work together with the artifact? It may eliminate the competition factor from the buying arrangement, but I'm certain our Mister Charlie will make due..."
Katherine As the people are walking back, the bruisers in particular, Katherine looks over to Mina and indicates, "If the device is harmful to biological life, I would suggest heavily that I take full containment of the device. I would be more than happy to lend to you what I learn about the device in any situation." She eyes back over at Charlie, before returning her gaze to Mina. "I am not sure why he would need more help, the amount of people present seems adequate to make a negotiated deal."

There's a little bit of a pause before she wonders, "Are you some sort of scientist? Is that why you have any interest in this mysterious device..." She grins, "If the shoe fits... of course, wear it!" Laughing, a bit boisterously, as she makes a joke about how the device is carried.
Mina Harker Mina Murray shakes her head only once. "We will discuss the rammifications later, my dear." Her gaze becomes a bit steely before she turns back towards Charlie and the bruisers as well. "Now, then. I am prepared to deliver the sum we discussed over the phone. My -partner- and I. And I -do- suggest you accept the offer."

Charlie may have -thought- to pull a scam with this, but the two women have out-maneuvered him. It's either one buyer or none. For a moment it looks like he's going to tell the bruisers to do something stupid, but then he gives a single nod. "Alright, then." Mina reaches into her jacket pocket to produce a small, brown envelope that's thick with cash and he offers the shoebox. The exchange is made, and the men slowly retreat.
Katherine With the conversation being had, Katherine just waits, she indicates, "I did not bring any cash. I only work through digital currency." And she eyes over at Mina as the man accepts the offer, "I would be happy to repay you in Bitcoin, or actual dollars, the amount that you paid this person." With that she stands up and walks over to the shoebox now to see what is inside of it.

"It would be advisable for me to open the box, incase it is a bomb or other dangerous situation." Mentions the woman without much explanation, though she does tag the cellphone that Charlie has, the bruiser, their car's description and will be following them through whatever traffic cams are in this city, plus a use of hopping and skipping along cellphones as a precaution that they actually were attempting to cause harm.
Mina Harker Mina Murray is more concerned about the box at this point, almost idly hand-waving the boldly-dressed woman. Nodding towards the bench, she offers softly. "Over there. And yes, a transfer would be sufficient." Stepping over briskly, she glances around before sitting. The box is placed beside her, leaving room for the other woman. Drawing a deep breath, she opens the box once Katy is settled.

Inside is a device made of some smooth, white metal. It's overlaid with heavy, ornate trim in the figure of aquatic creatures. The overlay looks to be some silvered steel. Mounted on double-gimbals is a dial with a pointer of red and black.

It's a ship's compass.

Mina exhales a soft hiss, muttering a single word. "Nautilus..."
Katherine "The boat of the classic novel?" Asks Katherine as she starts to do her own research, "I do not think it ever proclaimed to have alien technology aboard." She hrms a little bit and reaches out to grab the compass, delicate enough to not break it, and not quick enough to avoid being stopped. "Do you mind if I take a closer look at this? Do some research?" She will only pick it up if Mina allows, otherwise she will start sifting through backlogs of the internet, and the dark web for information related to the symbols and device.

Concluding rather quickly that it is not of alien design, Katherine hrms a little, "It does not exactly meet the specifications of something that I would be fully interested in. The metallic composition, design, and now your reference, all are indicative of possible Earth based super science, of the 19th century, or so." Another pause as she taps her lower lip, "Well, I've sent the Bitcoins and explanations on how to transfer them into dollars. Though you should be mindful, Bitcoin is on the rise." Your phone will buzz or beep, or whatever it does when it receives an email, and Katherine starts to stand, "If you have more research you would like, I've included some in the email, then get ahold of me. Otherwise, anything else of interest, please do let me know."
Mina Harker Mina Murray purses her lips, nodding curtly. "The same. And while it was not alien technology, it was quite capable of -defeating- alien technology." Mina doesn't stop the woman as she reaches for the compass. "My name is Mina Murray, since we will be working..." She is interrupted by the soft 'ding' of the phone in her pocket, and then she chuckles. "Very well then. What concerns me is that if someone has located the compass from the bridge of the Nautilus, it means that the rest of the ship has also been located. Nemo would never have parted with this willingly." She pauses, closing the box on the compass. "And I can assure you that, were the Nautilus active today, it would still be the deadliest thing in the ocean."

Rising herself, Mina adds. "I will be in touch."
