Maya Caldwell The Suicide Slums are oddly quiet today, without much activity. A few people hurriedly rush along the sidewalk near an apartment complex, head down to avoid attention. A cat meows loudly to the district. Along the opposite side of the street near the water's edge, a large bundle of blankets shuffles.
Shadowlite     Suicide Slums. It isn't much to look at, but it's home for a lot of people.

Well, a few dozens fewer less today, potentially.

The call went out moments ago. What can only be described as chaos has erupted in an apartment complex. Anyone arriving on the scene for the first minute gets treated to a huge fourty meter bubble of pitch black, centered on a specific apartment. Any attempts to look inside are rebuked. Something is... blocking or consuming the light as people try to use flashlights on it. Beyond that, the sound of gunfire and the accompanying holes, along with some sort of giant pellets that seem to disappear, making bigger holes, is evident as police start to arrive.
Maya Caldwell Maya Caldwell had peeked out of her bundle of blankets the moment the bubble appeared, then bolted off and dove straight into the water. It'd be easy to assume she's just a homeless person startled by the magical bubble.

A few minutes later, however, a behemoth of ice stomps in from the street, nearly ten feet tall, with sharp, spiked arms. It steps down the road, looking around for anything out of the ordinary as it heads toward the bubble.
Shadowlite     The minute or so it takes for Maya to get to the scene it all it takes for the fighting to stop. The pitch black is still there, as are the multititude of holes in the walls of the complex. The few police cruisers there are keeping their distance; patrolmen aren't equipped to deal with what sounds like dozens of gunmen -some of them sounded like submachine guns even- so they wait and surround the building, their pistols drawn as they call in SWAT.

No bodies have flung out of the complex, though, so there's no real distraction when the ten foot tall walking slab of ice comes over... and the police stare for a moment, their guns halfway raised, ready to fire. Once Maya actually gets near the barricade, one of the officers nervously gets out, "H-halt right there! Who are you, what do you want?"
Maya Caldwell Maya Caldwell slides to a stop in front of the police and holds it's arms up in a show of good nature for a second, before they drop to it's sides. It's head shifts from the police officer to the bubble and back (as if the thing had eyes to begin with), then simply points a sharp arm toward the bubble of darkness, then at itself, before putting it's...hands?...onto it's hips and thrusting it's chest out in a heroic pose.
Shadowlite     "Uh...." One of the officers 'comments'. "Look at it, could we stop it if we tried? Our guns would probably just bounce right off ice that thick." Another suggests.

Then, a scream of terror is heard from inside, all the way to the barricade.
Maya Caldwell Maya Caldwell briefly points to the other officer and nods, before lifting it's head up at the sound of a scream. Ignoring the police, she simply stomps off past the police cars, toward the bubble itself, stopping just short of it. Hesitantly, it sticks the tip of it's right spiked arm into the bubble, before pulling it out to see what it does.
Shadowlite     Nothing happens, and Maya loses sight of the tip as soon as it's inside. Whatever that bubble is, it seems to be a bubble of pitch black only... unless there are longer term effects.

Only one way to find out.
Maya Caldwell Maya Caldwell tilts it's head at it's hand, then simply steps on through to see what the bubble does.
Shadowlite     Darkness. Unending darkness.

Maya can hear, feel, and has all her parts still... but she can't see at *all*. She's effectively blind as she tries to head up the stairwell. Without knowing where the source is, it'll be very difficult to find anything in here.
Maya Caldwell The Glacier doesn't even know there -is- a stairwell, it just steps inside and sees...nothing. After a second of contemplation, it steps in further, shuffling it's feet along the floor so as to not step on anything or anyone. It blindly gropes around in the darkness with a spiked arm to try and find a wall to get around.
Shadowlite     It's around this time Maya can start to hear it.

A voice mask on what sounds like a baritone male, "-one of the worst ideas you've ever come up with, and that's saying something with that stunt you tried to pull last year." Another voice, "You know that wasn't personal, Shadow! You really ticked off the boss with that Metropolis job, and they paid off a lot of people to get to you." The first voice scoffs again, "It's never 'personal' with you people, but you don't have very good survival instincts if you thought ambushing me like this was going to work."

The voices provide a sort of guide for Maya; probably a floor up, around to the right. Of course, unless she goes slow, she's going to be heard with all that groping around.
Maya Caldwell The Glacier is basically the least nimble thing in all of Metropolis. It's footfalls are loud and heavy, and it's arms clink and clatter against the masonry as she feels her way around. Upon hearing the voices, however, it stops in it's tracks and tilts it's head to listen.
Shadowlite     Then, there's silence. A few seconds pass...

The first voice talks again, "You might as well come out, whoever you are. You're worse than the Juggernaut for trying to keep quiet." Just then, the stairwell... suddenly has light. Whatever was turning the area pitch black recedes... but only for the corridor and stairwell. Maya can see the entrance and a good portion of the front are still covered in that bubble.

"Over here. I've cleared a corridor for you.

As Maya stomps along, she sees what can only be described as a chaotic massacre. Blood, bodies, bullet holes and general destruction greet her sight if she heads for the source of the voices.

That second voice again, "What, you got a soft spot for the capes now? Didn't think you had it in you." That masked voice, "That's cute, you think that just because we've shared info occasionally you know me that well. All these bodies were from your people, asshole. I don't even have any guns on me for this one. I thought I could trust you not to try to kill me."
Maya Caldwell The Glacier shields it's eyes from the sudden, harsh light with an arm, though it's only reflexive, as the thing doesn't even have eyes. It briefly surveys the scene, before carefully stepping over the bodies and down the hallway, toward the pair. It ducks into the room thecpair are in, then...simply stops. It takes a few seconds to eye up the men, then awkwardly raises a spiked hand in a wave.
Shadowlite     The man with the masked voice is in a pitch black suit, with a white visor over his eyes the only break in it. There's a misty sort of liquid over his chest that flows around as he sits in a recliner. Opposite of him is a man, undoubtedly the second voice. He's stuck to a wall with a pitch black cocoon engulfing him... only his face visible. Around them are bodies. Lots of bodies. Shadowlite gives Glacier a once over, before he looks behind Maya... and reaches out a hand. A stream of some sort of blackness streaks out, once again covering where Maya came from in pitch black, before Shadowlite looks back to the man on the wall, "Look who you brought down on you, asshole. This ones new to me, temperature controller, but the looks of it."

The second man, now able to see, just sighs, "Should have asked for double..." Shadowlite just shakes his head as he sits there, "Should have run the fuck away before you even tried this. What, you think that if I was surrounded I'd just run?"
Maya Caldwell The Glacier looks behind itself as Shadowlite plugs up the hallway it came from with another dose of darkness, before simply nodding it's head as he mentions it being a "temperature controller". She looks around at the bodies, then over to the two remaining men, before lifting it's arms in a questioning shrug, as if asking what's going on.
Shadowlite     The liquid darkness over Shadowlites chest starts to expand over his body, then, before he reaches out with a hand and tendrils of black rope start to pull the bodies all over the place into a giant pile. Shadowlite? He just stays where he has as the blackness does the work for him. The second man gets the cocoon expanding over his mouth, leaving his nose his only means of breathing. "You don't need to concern yourself over this, Mr. Ice Golem." Shadowlite remarks. "suffice to say someone tried to kill me over past misunderstandings, and they mostly shot themselves to death trying to stop me from knocking them out in the darkness."

Shadowlite sighs as he begins to walk over to another room, the tendrils grabbing more bodies. "Some people actually do take things personally when you stand up to their thugs. If you like, you can ask this guy when I'm done here." Shadowlite nods to the cocooned man, "I was a bit busy dodging bullets... so I think everyone else is dead? I haven't checked."
Maya Caldwell The Golem tilts it's head to and fro as it considers. Just before Shadowlite steps out, the golem waves an arm to catch his attention, then points out a window. A second passes, and the golem's limbs sag slightly, gears turning in it's head. Suddenly, it holds up a spiked hand as if it were an index finger telling him to wait, then drops the claw to the floor. The very tip of the appendage starts to melt, and the water slowly coalesces into the shape of a police badge. The golem points to the badge, then to the man cocooned up, before turning to Shadowlite and awaiting an answer.
Shadowlite     "The police? Yeah, that was expected." Shadowlite explains, "I was only here for a meeting with a colleaguefor a pickup. Someone sold me out, and now this mess." Shadowlite turns around then, walking over to the badge... then, a tendril of shadow moves over and picks it up, giving it back to the golem. "They can clean up the mess. Most of this nation doesn't give a crap about my kind as it is, and I've got no reason to stick around after I find his friend." Shadowlite says as he looks over the bodies, checking for pulses and faces, "The man on the wall stays there until I'm done. He's one of the ones who sold me out." Another pulse checked, "Oh, this ones alive. I'll let you take him out to the cops if you like, Icey."
Maya Caldwell The Glacier nods at the mention of the cops, then nods again when asked if she'd like to take the survivor to the police. The icy patch on the floor in the shape of the police badge was frozen to the floor and not moving anywhere any time soon. It's just ice, anyway, it'd melt within the hour. The behemoth stoops down near the survivor and picks him up fireman style, before carefully navigating the darkness and stepping out.
Shadowlite     The blackness recedes once again for Maya as she steps outside... and the cops have their guns aimed at the Glacier, but make no attempt to fire. One even puts his gun away when he sees the body. "Looks like the thing has a survivor?" The officer asks nervously, before he gestures to the back, where an ambulance is silently waiting.

There are more siren of police, firefighters, and ambulances on the way, from the sounds of it. "What's going on in there?" Another officer asks, "SWAT is on the way, but can they even get in there?"
Maya Caldwell The Glacier doesn't seem too bothered by the police's firearms. It just gently sets the man down near the police cars, then turns toward the questioning officer. It's head tilts again, then shrugs lightly, gesturing vaguely to the ramshackle apartments nearby.
Shadowlite     "Uh.... right. I think we'll just wait for SWAT to take a look." Someone in the back notes as they get back into their cruiser. "You said it, flashlights are useless in there, maybe night vision will be useful." Another remarks.

In the apartment, another moment passes before Shadowlite is heard, "You boys can come inside now, if you like. I'm done in here." Then, there's an electrical crackling sound as the pitch black recedes completely.
Maya Caldwell The Glacier lift it's head as Shadowlite's voice echoes around them, then turns around toward the bubble of darkness as it dissipates. It glances back to the police, then gestures with an arm to follow as it stomps back inside.
Shadowlite Once inside, Maya can see a hole of pure black floating in the air around where the man in the cocoon is. As Shadowlite notices the golem, he gives it another once over. In his hand is a briefcase, "Turns out only this asshole sold me out. Too bad, I liked the other one." Shadowlite notes, before he looks to the pile of bodies. "Lotta people died for nothing. A shame." Then, Shadowlite shrugs, "See you around, Icey. I'd stay to chat, but I did just invite the police in here." With that, Shadowlite starts to step towards the floating, misty portal of black. "I'd offer you to come with, but I've got no idea if you're even a woman under that."
Maya Caldwell The Glacier looks over to Shadowlite once inside and simply shakes her head at the strange man's justifications. It turns it's attention to the police next, then slowly steps aside so they may better asses the situation.
Shadowlite With Maya staying where she is, Shadowlite steps inside the portal, and it seals up behind him. The only trace of it being stray misty black particles that fade into nothing. The man in the cocoone? It falls apart gradually until he starts to fall to the ground. Seems Shadowlite knocked him out.
Maya Caldwell The Glacier looks down at the man that falls from the coccoon, then waves a police officer closer, before pointing to him, then toward the portal that pops closed just seconds after. And then...the golem just starts stepping out, apparently deciding her help's no longer needed.
