Tyler Grant It's the evening. Outside, the weather is clear and the sky is visible. But Tyler Grant is not currently outside. He's in Mel's Diner, having felt the need to escape the confines of Xavier's school. Since going into the city is currently off limits one must make do with what is allowed and this diner seems like as good a place as any for a friendly chat. Currently, he's got a booth to himself. There's a milkshake and a plate of fries in front of him, steadily being consumed by the young man. The rest of the joint is mostly empty, providing a degree of quiet not usually found in a place like this.
Mason     Mason had been idly driving around the town, top up, windows up, and sunglasses on. Westchester was a nice enough town. He didn't have anything that he was really looking to do, he had just been in thought. Then he spotted the motorcycle in the parking lot at Mel's Diner. It is time to eat. He clicks on his blinker, and turns into to the lot, parking right next to the bike. He takes a full minute before he gets the courage up to exit the car, sunglasses still on.
He opens the diner door, and takes inventory of the room before he spots Tyler sitting by his lonesome, and makes his way over. "Hey, mind another?" he asks, standing next to the booth.
Tyler Grant Munching slowly on his fries, Tyler looks at his phone on the table in front of him, a video of some sort playing on it. When he hears someone address him, he looks up at Mason and a smile forms on his face, "Hi man. Have a seat." He gestures towards the other side of the booth before picking up his phone and putting it away. "What are you doing out here?"
Mason     Mason slides into the booth across from Tyler. "Ah, just chillin', had to talk to some people up here, saw your bike." He nods at the phone, "What're ya watchin'?" he asks.
A waitress walks up, and she gives Mason a look as she introduces herself. "Are you...Mason Steele?" she asks. Mason glances at Tyler, then shakes his head. "Nah, but thanks for thinkin' it," he says. "I'm Jim," he offers with a smile. He orders a cheeseburger and fries for himself.
Tyler Grant "Just some video on escaping the side mount. Jiu jitsu stuff," Tyler says with a little shrug as he leans back in the booth and picks up another fry to eat. "So who did you need to talk to all the way out in the country, Jim?" He cracks a smile, amused at himself. "I guess this is the country, right? There are horses and cows out here and stuff."
Mason     "Uh, well," Mason says hesitantly. "Just some stuff for school." He has a distinctly uncomfortable vibe to him, and leans back on the booth in a poor attempt to mask it. "Thought I'd just cruise the town a little and see what it was like."
Tyler Grant "Yeah? School's got me keeping pretty busy during the day. I've got to study to keep my grades up and all that stuff," Tyler says to his buddy in an attempt to change the subject for him. "The town is pretty nice. Quiet. Not enough buildings or people and everything closes early, but it's picturesque."
Mason     "They have you doin' classes in the summer? That blows," Mason answers. He takes the salt shaker, pouring a little onto the table, and tries to use it to balance the shaker on its edge between the tiny grains. It falls, and he tries again. It falls again, but the third time it stays up, giving the appearance of a magic trick, because it doesn't look like the shaker should be able to balance where it is. He gives it a satisfied look, and while looking at the shaker still, he says, "Glad you like it here," he says. "I um, might be around here more often, looks like. Nothin's sure yet. Might get to hang out more often."
Tyler Grant "It's mostly so I can keep my grades up for extracurricular stuff," Tyler shrugs as he watches Mason play with the salt shaker. He makes sure not to touch the table while the other guy amuses himself so as not to mess things up. "What do you mean? You thinking about moving out here or something?"
Mason     The waitress brings his burger and fries, and as it is set on the table, the shaker falls over. Mason places the shaker back where it belongs, and then slides the plate more centrally in front of him. "Somethin' like that," he says. "I uh, probably should tell you somethin'," he says, taking a bite from his burger to avoid doing just that.
Tyler Grant Once the table is clear of the balanced salt shaker Tyler resumes picking at his food. Taking his time in a manner that's unusual for him in an effort to make his fries last. He takes a suck on his milkshake's straw, watching Mason over his glass. "What is it, dude?" He looks around the diner to make sure that no one appears to be listening in. "Is everything okay?"
Mason     Something between a grimace and a frown crosses Mason's face. "Well, uh," he says, continuing with the interjectory hesitations. "I might join your school." He doesn't elaborate, grabbing a few fries and dipping them in the ketchup before shoving them in his mouth. He doesn't look up, keeping his eyes fixed on his food, as if it might escape.
Tyler Grant "Really?" Tyler asks, sounding both pleased and surprised. That is until he's hit with a realization, "Oh. Oh man." Another check to make sure there are no eavesdroppers before he leans forward across the table and speaks quietly, "I had no idea, man." His food and milkshake are temporarily forgotten thanks the news. "Thanks for telling me. You need any help or anything? Or need to talk about it? I know where you're coming from."
Mason     "I dunno," Mason says with a lazy shake of the head. "I didn't tell anyone. I screwed up when Andrea got attacked. Didn't mean to use my...whatever you wanna call it." He dips another fry in his ketchup, and just keeps dipping it up and down. "That's part of why I really wanted to get those video feeds. Found out where they are, some big business guy has them, he's blackmailing Andrea and she's trying to play tough so probably gonna be really screwed as soon as those come out." He lets out a sigh.
Tyler Grant "You used your powers, I guess. That's what I call them, at least, makes it sound like I got something in common with Superman," Tyler says to Mason, cracking a little smile at the end of his statement. Then the other news comes out and Tyler's mouth drops open. When he shuts it there's a deep frown, "Maybe I can get them back for you guys. I... I know some people that might be able to help." His hands ball up into fists in anger, "Ugh! What a son of a bitch. I'd like to get my hands on the guy who thinks it's okay to blackmail my friends. I should break his legs!"
Mason     "Yeah, I don't know his name. Riki Tikki Saki or something like that. Owns some big bio company called Stockgen, I think?" He shakes his head. "He wanted to trade Andrea's blood for the video tapes, the way she tells it. Kinda creepy, really."
Tyler Grant "Stockgen?" Tyler pulls his phone out of his pocket and starts swiping on it, then seems to think better of it and returns it to his pocket. Another phone comes out at this point and he begins thumb typing on it rapidly. "That's sick. Must be trying to figure out how mutants work or something." His frown deepens, "Damn. Looks like this is the company." He flips the phone around so Mason can see, "I think I found the guy, too."
Mason     Mason cranes his neck forward to look at the phone. "I guess," he says. He reads the blurb aloud. "Japanese Business entrepreneur and majority shareholder of StockGen. Mr. Oroku believes in making the world better through medicine, and has dedicated his resources to finding new ways to further longevity and quality of life." He frowns, "Mean lookin' though," he comments. "Somebody like that, you'd never get close to him. Top of some high rise office I bet." He takes a bite of the fries, "I just wish she'd give in so that he'll keep that stuff buried. Does that make me a crappy friend? I mean, he gets what he wants, we get what we want. I dunno."
Tyler Grant "I can't go after him. You know how pissed my family'd be if I outed myself as a mutant by attacking a business place like that? I'll just have to hope he screws something up and the cops get him," Tyler says before taking on a thoughtful expression. Then he looks at Mason again and shrugs his shoulders, "I'm not in your shoes, but if I were I think it would be okay to hope that this stuff doesn't get leaked. I just hope Andrea knows what she's doing. I don't want to see you get outed like that or for people to see her powers before she's ready to share them."
Mason     "Yeah, me too," Mason says. "I dunno, I'm sorry I didn't say nothin'. Andrea's fault I'm sayin' it now," he admits. "She can be really pushy, ya know?"
Tyler Grant "It's okay. I probably wouldn't have told you about me being a mutant," Tyler admits with a shrug. Then he nods his head, "I guess she can be. Not that I really mind, it's good to have someone push you sometimes as long as you don't let them push you around." He remembers his milkshakes and goes back to the straw to consume some more of it.
Mason     "Yeah, I got enough people pushing me," he says. "You should meet my mom. She's a real piece of work." He takes a bite of his burger. "I guess I just thought you should know before you see me suddenly show up there. Thought it might be kind of a dick move, you know?"
Tyler Grant "I'll say something to Andrea about it, if you want me to," Tyler offers. Then he inclines his head, "I appreciate the head's up. It'd be weird to see you there out of the blue." He lifts his chin, "You'll like the school, I bet. Lots of cool people, bunch of things to do. The facilities are really nice and the food in the dining hall is good. There are some good looking girls, too. Dibs on Clarissa, by the way."
Mason     "Nah," Mason says, "Last thing I need is her being upset that I'm upset, and then more girl drama breaks out. Clarissa, huh? I hoped things were going well with Andrea, what happened to that? Or just keeping your options open?"
Tyler Grant "I've still go a big crush on Andrea, but we're not going steady or anything," Tyler says to Mason with a shrug. "Kinda wish we were, but since we're not I'm not going to pretend to be anything other than a normal, healthy guy and spend time with other girls."
Mason     "Yeah, yeah of course," Mason answers, his grin starting to return. "I feel ya." He takes another bite of his burger, not swallowing before he adds. "You just let me know if you need any more help, okay?" he comments.
Tyler Grant Tyler finishes off his milkshake, sucking just long enough to make that annoying noise with his straw before quitting and pushing the glass away. "I will, man. I appreciate it." Then his fries are gone, too. Tyler looks around for the waitress to order a coke with a friendly smile. Back to Mason, "Even the teachers at school are hot. This one lady, Ms Braddock, is literally a model. And Ms Frost..." He grins, "Scary as hell but really hot."
Mason     "Man, goin' for the older ladies?" Mason laughs. "I can help with that. Just gotta act really mature. They don't like texting for a date and normal stuff like that, they get old school, want you to ask in person and stuff. Sure you want me there? I might steal them all away from you."
Tyler Grant "I'm not chasing them or anything, just appreciating from afar," Tyler chuckles. "Although I'm sure it would help my grades." More laughter escapes. "I'm really looking forward to you possibly going to Xavier's. I think we'll have a lot of fun there."
