Tyler Grant The classroom has been carefully prepared for today's training. All the furniture has been removed or pushed up against the walls where it won't get in anyone's way and thick gym mats cover the rest of the floor. It's obvious someone took their time making sure everything was set up properly.

That someone is likely Tyler Grant. The young man is in the center of the room wearing a blue Brazilian jiu jitsu gi, bouncing lightly on the balls of his feet and looking at a cell phone in his hand. Next to him on the ground is a big black gym bag that's quite full of stuff.
Erika Kristasdottir Erika Kristasdottir wanders in, wearing workout clothes.. well, sweats, her gym shoes, a long sleeve shirt that's probably too warm for this and sadly, probably not optional. She has her usual gloves on, leather driving gloves. Not really appropriate for the situation, but necessary. She has a bag with her.

She clears her throat, "Okay, I'm here. Is something going on?" and looks around unfamiliar with what you have set out.
Tyler Grant "Hey," Tyler says to Erika as he tosses his cell phone into his bag, still bouncing slightly. He takes a moment to look her over, not so much sizing her up as making sure that her attire appears to be suitable for what he has planned. His head nods faintly in approval, "I got the room prepped ahead of time for us so we could get right to training."

Gently kicking the bag on the ground next to him he says, "I got you some hand wraps and a mouth guard, but they're not necessary for what I've got planned today. The mouth guard you need to heat in the microwave to fit to your mouth properly, but I'll show you how to do that after we're done training."

Tyler continues to bounce and says, "We're going to start with Brazilian jiu jitsu work today. A lot of BJJ is takedowns and ground fighting, so after we warm up and stretch I'm going to show you how to fall, then I'm going to teach you a few techniques and let you practice them on me."

"Does that sound okay to you?" Tyler asks.
Erika Kristasdottir Erika Kristasdottir nods. "Okay. Falling, got it." She takes her shoes off and wanders onto the mat, looking around. "Well, ready. Um. I know these gloves are probably not the greatest, just... You know... And I don't know what would work better. I'm probably going to be so soaked when I get done too..."
Tyler Grant "Those gloves aren't great, but they'll do okay until we figure out something better," Tyler tells Erika as he eyes the gloves in question. "If we do this right we'll both be soaking wet. I've got water if you need it, just tell me and we'll take a second to hydrate." He puts a foot on his bag and pushes, sliding it off of the mat so it ends up against the wall. "I've got stuff in there to show you after we wrap the actual training, too. Don't let me forget."

Tyler then speaks with a very serious tone, "The important thing is that you're comfortable doing this. If at any point you need to stop just tell me and we'll take a break and figure out what to do differently." The young man is doing his best to sound professional. It's quite possible he rehearsed what he's saying. "So, in order to minimize the chances of us getting hurt we'll do some warm ups. We're going to start with a little running in place, then some jumping jacks, then stretching."

Tyler leads the way through the warm up exercises, watching Erika closely the whole time to make sure she looks okay. The exercises aren't very challenging, Tyler doesn't push hard, but he intends to make sure their muscles are warm enough to stretch safely. When it comes time to stretch he works from the top down, doing a very thorough job of making sure the body is adequately prepared for what comes next. Once they finish he rolls smoothly to his feet and grins, "Alright. Now for falling safely."
Erika Kristasdottir Erika Kristasdottir is in okay shape, so this is easy enough so far.. She nods, "I appreciate that.." and ends up warming up quickly because well, she's a little overdressed through no fault of her own.

She nods, watching you. "Okay. Some kind of rolling, right? I remember it from PE.." She tries to remember what little she knows about the subject, paying attention to you.
Tyler Grant "Cool. Yeah, rolling is involved," Tyler grins as he positions himself in a good spot on the floor, looking around quickly to make sure it's safe to demonstrate. "After this class we're going to add break falls and shrimping to our warm ups, but right now we need to make sure you've got them down."

Taking a deep breath, Tyler says, "First up is forward break fall. You step forward with your right foot, a normal distance like if you're walking somewhere." He demonstrates. "Make like a big circle with your arms, like this, then duck your chin to your chest to protect your head." He does this too, the arms meeting with fingers touching at an angle and his head going as low as he can get it without straining. "Bend your knees and place both your hands on the floor, then just let yourself roll, keeping your left knee mostly straight and slapping the ground with your hand when you hit." Tyler does just as he says, rolling to where he lays down on the floor with his left leg mostly straight in front, right leg bent, left hand smacking the mat hard enough to make noise and right hand near his chest. From there he gets to his feet in a fighting position before straightening himself out. "You want to see if again, or you ready to give it a shot?"
Erika Kristasdottir Erika Kristasdottir hmms, watching you. "Yeah, I've done that before, just.. Not lately, and not all that much." She thinks, going through the motions with some competence. Though she's not going to be able to do it at speed yet.

She hmmms and thinks about it, reviewing it in her head. "Okay. I remember doing that." As if it wasn't a sure thing. She leans, holding her arms up and reviewing again, then nods. "Okay."
Tyler Grant "Alright! Good job," Tyler says proudly after closely studying Erika's movements. "We'll do a few more, don't worry about going fast yet, just take your time and focus on doing the break fall correctly. We'll take turns so we can watch each other to make sure we're not making any mistakes." Tyler takes his time doing his next roll to make sure his student can watch him do it, then watches to make sure Erika does a good job herself, smiling.
Erika Kristasdottir Erika Kristasdottir follows, doing the rolls and smiling a bit, slowly trying to get them right. She watches you, biting her lip and trying to compare movements. "Well okay. This isn't too hard so far."
Tyler Grant "Good," Tyler says with a happy grin. "You're getting it down. You'll get the hang of these in no time."

"Next up is a side break fall." The young instructor shakes his limbs out a little bit before standing up straight. "You're going to step to the side, turning in that direction and raising your hands out in front of your body like this." As Tyler steps off with his right foot his hands come up open, palms down, at shoulder level. "From here you sweep your other foot towards your first foot. This will let you bend the first leg you stepped off onto as you roll onto your back, raising your legs up and smacking the mat." When he moves it's all done very smoothly and Tyler ends up on his back again before getting to his feet in a fighting stances and then straightening up. "Alright. Your turn. Take it nice and slow and ask any questions you might have, okay?"

Tyler takes his time making sure that Erika's got this down, giving encouragement to her the whole time.

"Last up is the backwards break fall." Tyler starts at a standing position, "Start by extending your arms out in front of you, then cross them over your chest, ducking your chin to your chest." Done in a quick series of smooth motions. "Bend your knees so you're squatting down with your heels off of the floor. From here you roll back, making sure not to bang your back on the floor, lifting your legs into the air and slapping the mat with both hands." The break fall is then nicely executed before Tyler gets to his feet, takes his fighting stance, then stands up straight.

More time is taken to make sure Erika performs the break fall adequately. Tyler then goes back and has them perform all three break falls in different orders, always making sure to do the same exercises he's asking of his student. More words of encouragement are given, along with a big grin.
Erika Kristasdottir Erika Kristasdottir goes rolling all over the place, learning how to do the rolls. She's done them, obviously, but she's rusty and was never great at them. Roll roll roll. Okay. This is good. "Okay. Any more?"
Tyler Grant "Alright! You're doing really well. No more new break falls for today," says Tyler as he lifts his sleeve to wipe a little sweat that's formed at his brow. "Next up is shrimping. This forms an important part of a lot of escapes and guard attacks." In order to get to his starting position, flat on his back, Tyler executes a forward break fall, then just lays flat after it's done with his knees bent and the soles of his feet flat on the mat. "Okay, from here we lift up our foot and bring it down onto the ground, shifting our weight to our opposite shoulder." He shows off what he means, making each part of the movement distinct so that Erika can see exactly what's happening. "Hips come out as your other shoulder comes up, then you drop your hips." Tyler is now on his side. He rolls onto his back and demonstrates from the other side how to do it. Then he does it again and again. By the time he's finished he's traveled all the way across the mat by means of shrimping. Standing up straight he says, "It looks easy, but it's one of the most important things you do in ground fighting. Every class from here on out we're going to do a bunch of this, so get used to it." There's a soft chuckle at that remark.

"Don't worry, before we're done today I'll show you how to choke someone out or break their arm, it's just important to get the basics down before moving onto the more fun stuff." With a smile Tyler says, "Now let's see you shrimp."
Erika Kristasdottir Erika Kristasdottir ohs and listens. "Okay. Um." She tries it and gets a bit tangled up, frowning and trying to work through the movements a bit with minor frustration. "Okay. Yeah. This is going to probably be really weird, but can we work more on the fitness stuff? I.. Okay, look, it's kind of creepy watching your whole hand bend somewhere it's not supposed to be able to, and I don't want to have to be afraid of that. That's the thing that scares me the most."
Tyler Grant "We can totally work more on the fitness stuff if you want to," says Tyler as he nods his head. "That's super important. I just didn't want you to feel like I was taking it easy on you by not teaching you submissions. Since this is one on one we can make sure we take our time and work on anything you want to, though, just let me know." There's a pause for a deep breath, "We can do some partner stretches to increase your flexibility and we could do some drills that get your blood pumping and help you improve on the basics."
Erika Kristasdottir Erika Kristasdottir swallows and nods. "Yeah. I don't worry about submissions. Not yet. Submissions won't matter if I put myself in the hospital just trying to do the things I know how to do at the time before it even gets close. I need.. I need to be more flexible, and stronger, and have more endurance, and I need to be able to punch things and kick things and get hit without BREAKING.." She shudders a little. "..Like.. Like glass. Again."
Tyler Grant "Hey, we're going to make sure that you don't get hurt like that again," Tyler says to Erika with a frown. He moves in to stand a little closer to her and looks down at her gloved hands, "We'll need to work hard to make sure you're tough enough to hit stuff as hard as you can without hurting yourself. One of the best ways is to hit a heavy punching bag. I'll find us a place where we can work out with a bag nearby." He then says, "But for tonight let's work on flexibility and get ourselves a good stretch. You know how to do the sitting twist to stretch out your chest?"
Erika Kristasdottir Erika Kristasdottir hmms, "I think so. I know all sorts of stretches, I just don't know when I should do them or anything." She reaches up and pulls her bangs down over her eyes, then sits and twists, using her arm against her knee to help twist into the stretch. "I thought about going for one of the teams at school, I just wasn't ever quite sure which one, and some of them seemed kind of dangerous. Crazy stuff going on and all."
Tyler Grant "I'm not really a team sports kind of person, either. I just do BJJ and kickboxing. If I wasn't a mutant I'd try to go pro in a year or two, but it would be like cheating if it ever got out that I've got powers," Tyler explains. "I don't blame you for not going out for anything, though. Sports really aren't for everyone."

"That's it. That's the right stretch." Ty says when he sees Erika twisting. "You want to try a partner variation on for size? We can meet up every day and do these once we've warmed up, make sure you get really flexible that way."

"Stop me immediately if anything here starts to actually hurt. Sometimes it's hard to judge where to stop with other people," Tyler explains as he sits down Indian style on the floor. "Alright. Sit back to back with me here. What we're going to do it take our left hand and put it on the outside of our right knee, then take our right hand and put it on the front of our partner's left knee. This will let us stretch out our chest muscles better than any solo stretches I know of."

The stretch is pretty easy to execute and provides a very good stretch. After a period of time in the stretch Tyler says, "Now switch sides."
Erika Kristasdottir Erika Kristasdottir switches. "Yeah. Well, I didn't mind the idea of trying out for, I don't know, volleyball or cheer or something, but there was a thing with evil cultists or something, and Mom wouldn't sign the permission slip after that." She hmms, "I mean, I can't quite blame her, but it's not like people weren't disappearing all the time everywhere. Stop there.." She takes a moment to make sure she's all straightened out and nods to you, "Okay, next?"
Tyler Grant "Next up is the split stretch. This one will let us stretch the inside of the thighs. We're going to sit on the ground facing each other. You'll stretch your legs out as far as they'll go like this..." the young man demonstrates what he's talking about. "You do that and I'm going to do something similar, but I'm going to be putting my heels on the insides of your ankles. We'll hold each others arms and I'll lean back while you lean into the stretch."

"Evil cults and disappearances? Where did you grow up?" Tyler asks curiously as he positions himself with his partner. "All I had to worry about was dodging muggers in Clinton. Joke's on them, though, my family's poor so I never have much money." A little chuckle. "That and if anyone messed with me I'd send them to the hospital."
Erika Kristasdottir Erika Kristasdottir gets into position carefully and starts stretching. "Sunnydale. It's kind of low rent because the supernatural danger went through the roof some time back. I don't know why. I still need to go back and get my stuff sorted out at home some time soon, and maybe catch up with some old friends. I'm pretty sure I am staying closeted with them for now." She bites her lip a bit, trying not to overdo the stretch.

"..Okay, next? Yeah, I just stayed out of the way. I hung out with some friends that were good at staying out of the way for awhile, but my parents found out they were selling to one of their suppliers and hit the roof."
Tyler Grant "Outside of the people at this school, my brother and my buddy Mason nobody knows I'm a mutant. Unless I end up on the news for busting up that bank robbery. It's hard to explain dodging bullets as anything but a super power," Tyler says, frowning a little bit.

"Reach for the sky is the next one. For this you'll lay on the ground on your belly and I'll stand over you, taking your arms so that I can help you bend your back to give it, your stomach and your shoulders a really good stretch," says Tyler as he moves to get into position. "When we do this I'm going to rely on you to tell me when you're at your most stretched out point."

"What were they selling? Pot?" the youth asks. "I've never tried that stuff or gotten drunk or anything. Until I got here I mostly just hung out with my brother, who's a police dispatcher, and guys from the gym."
Erika Kristasdottir Erika Kristasdottir nods and gets into position. "Well, if your brother is police, I probably shouldn't talk too much about my family. They're not doing anything straight up illegal, at least." She pauses. "Stop." and bites her lip, waiting for the stretch to work. "..OK, ease off now."

She whews, relaxing out a bit. "And that robbery was all over the news. I don't remember any good footage though. If nobody said anything so far, you're probably fine."
Tyler Grant "As long as they're not directly breaking the law it's probably not a big deal, but I don't blame you for being better safe than sorry," says the boy as releases his partner slowly from her stretch.

"For this stretch you straighten your legs in front of you and lean all the way forward," Tyler says as he demonstrates what he's talking about. "Now, from here your partner can press on your back, or they can lay on top of you so that both backs are touching, extend their arms to the sides and lift their feet off of the ground. I'm going to just push on you until you've built up the flexibility to handle my body weight, though." He stands up to get in position to provide the weight for Erika's stretch.

"I was concerned that I'd show up on the bank's security footage or someone outside had gotten me with their cell phone but you're probably right," There's a shrug. "I think this is going to be the last partner stretch for today since I can't remember any more off the top of my head. We'll finish with some more solo stretching and then hit the showers."
Erika Kristasdottir Erika Kristasdottir nods, "Awesome." and closes her eyes to deal with this stretch. "Maybe just get Jubilee to work on these with us for later? If she's so good at stretching? What are you best with other than grappling?"
Tyler Grant As the stretch wraps Tyler nods his head, "Yeah, I bet she's awesome at it. We should try to see if we can't get some time alone with her, just you and I." Then he grins, "I'm really good at kicking the hell out of people. I'm super agile and flexible so I can kick guys in the head pretty easily. I score some decent blows when I'm sparring that way, even if it's not always the most practical way to strike. I don't suck at anything in particular, though. I'm pretty nasty with my hands, knees and elbows, too."
Erika Kristasdottir Erika Kristasdottir nods. "Awesome. Teach me how to hit real hard without hurting myself and we will go bug Jubilee. That totally sounds like a plan. Two thumbs up."
