Andrew Bennett The snow has faded away as Winter ends, and pre-spring brings rain with it. The small diner hugs a street corner in this corner of Gotham. People aren't getting gunned down in the street, but this isn't a ritzy part of town, either. This diner caters to late shift workers and insomniacs, with the random addict tossed in. It follows a stereotypical, old-fashioned design, being built out of an old train car and expanded. It isn't just a schtick, though. People who know local history would know this place has been here for a -long- time.

A long counter is accompanied with stools, and a couple of booths are in the corner. It doesn't seat a lot of people, and the place could be considered 'cozy', but it works. The daily special is scrawled on a chalkboard, and pies sit under glass. A window looks back into the kitchen, where burgers and late night pancakes are cooked up to be served. The food is surprisingly good, which keeps people coming back...but not good enough for this place to go from a 'local favorite' to 'sensation'. Just the way folks like it.

The place is empty, save a few random customers showing up, or already seated. Not many at all. Andrew lounges behind the counter, dressed in tight, dark jeans and a long-sleeved grey and black flannel over a faded Smashing Pumpkins shirt from another decade. Clearly a hand-me-down. His nametag reads 'Andy'.
Jua Mandala     Nothing went with one meal, than another kind of meal! Kid has been around Gotham enough times himself. Heck, he has even heard of the little known diner, but has never actually bothered to visit it before. But with his stomech growling and the smell of pies, burgers and what have you in the midnight air, there was only one place to go.

And so into the diner he comes, a bell ringing off above him to announce a new arrival. The massive rilla, was in nothing more than jeans, an open flannel shirt, worn more like a vest since the sleeves have been ripped off, and a pair of sandels hanging around his neck (he wasn't wearing any shoes currently). Some of the fur on his forarms had odd golden hairs but was otherwise normal black fur. The only other odd thing, save for being a gorilla, was the fact he had greyish-olive skin.

As he walked towards the counter, he gave him a general sensation of anger and aggression. A potential trouble maker perhaps. But not one note folks he reactions, he simply begins to sign. An odd bracer on his wrist emits a synthetic male voice "Any of those mango pies?" he points to the pies.
Jillian Holtzmann It had been a long day, and overall, Holtz had finally gotten her fill of Gotham. Chasing leads was part of the whole schtick of being a Ghostbuster, and having chased down the dead leads that Venkman had sent her on to chase down here... well, she was over it. Hunger had crept up on her, and having skipped lunch and dinner to perform interviews and various other analysis on different residences, she needed a late dinner before catching her ride back.

As she walks down the street, the diner catches her eye, and she reaches up, adjusting her glasses. "Eh, why not?" she muses to herself, before moving to push through the door.

As she enters the otherwise empty diner and the smells hit her, her stomach growls a little bit. She makes a bit of a face as she clears her throat, playing it off... and she glances around the otherwise empty diner, before moving to sit down at the bar, just settling in, very casual-like.
Andrew Bennett "No, mango," the pale man behind the counter replies as he glances up from the battered old paperback he's reading. "But we have banana creme." What else do you say to a gorilla? Either way, 'Andy' seems surpisingly unphased by a freaking GORILLA wandering in, even if they -are- dressed a bit alike. His voice is smooth and luxurious, and has a New England clip to it. He sounds fairly local. "Only other fruit pies we have is cherry and apple, but we have a really great chocolate creme, too..." Andy straightens his back, leaving his book as-is for now. His gaze dips over Kid curiously, but he doesn't mention the whole...ape-ness.

He turns his attention from the gorilla to Holtzman, and the man nods to her. He reaches under the counter and produces two menus, setting one in front of each. "Welcome!" He glances back into the kitchen, making sure the cook knows folks are showing up. "Coffee?," he asks them both.
Jua Mandala     Kid face scrunches up in disgust...though it might seem a bit like anger before signs "No thanks. Banana taste like shite." plus the amount of times people try to give him bananas. He could snap a neck. "But cherry sounds good, so Sure, the coffee too." he takes a quick glance over the menu. And he almost seems to drool "...also, two double burgers with all the works, save cheese, please." he points to the burger in question on the menu. Well for an angry seeming fella, he was polite enough.

His own attention turns to Jillian and he looks her up and down. His lips curl revealing his over sized canines, as he emits some sort of sound, perhaps a chuckle. As she did look pretty tired to him. He signs as much too "You look like your about to drop dead" feels like it too.
Jillian Holtzmann "Coffee, yes. Please, all the coffee."

Seemingly unphased by the gorilla herself, Jillian just leans against the counter. As she examines the menu, her nose crinkles slightly, and she finally reaches out, pointing toward one of the dishes. "Two eggs, scrambled, with cheese and jalapenos, with a side of bacon, and hashbrowns?" she asks, glancing at Andrew, reaching up and lifting up her glasses from her eyes. She squints a little bit, furrowing her eyebrows some, and sitting up slightly.

"Huh."

She says nothing, but she just shrugs, before glancing over at the Gorilla-like figure... and shrugging. "It's been a long day," she remarks, before lowering her glasses again, and leaning back down on the counter.
Mon-El     Holtzmann thinks she's tired? She thinks she's had a long day? Has she been to Apokolips before? Because that's where Lar has been. Arguably, though, it's his own fault that he was stuck there longer than the rest of the team. Because he -has- to go be the biggest hero and -make sure- everyone else got through the portal before it closed. So of course it had to close before he could get through. Well it's hard not to hero for even for the other heroes when you're usually one of the 'heavy hitters'. And actually heavIEST hitters.

Still, even heavy hitters like him can take a beating in a place like Apokolips, even without Darkseid being there. So he sort of flops down onto a stool next to Jillian and Kid, looking pretty battered. Okay, it's actually not -that- battered, given where he just was.
Andrew Bennett Andy nods to that. He writes the order on a little slip of paper and attaches it to this metal ring between him and the kitchen, and he spins it so the cook knows to prep a piece of cherry pie and the burgers. He then walks over to grab the coffee and a mug. He fills it and sets it down in front of the ape. "Creamer is in the thingie." He gestures to the container between Jillian and Kid, filled with creamers. "You got it. First time in here? I figure I'd remember you, but...I always work the night shift," he says with a shrug."

He pours Jillian a cup of coffee as well, offering the woman a nod. "Sounds good," he replies, putting her order in as well. "I get the whole 'long day' bit. Been there." He turns as Lar arrives and he slides a menu in front of him. "Hey, there. Coffee? We usually don't get this many people at this hour. Not that I mind. Better then reading 'On The Road' for the hundredth time, I guess."
Jua Mandala     Kid looks over at Lars and than takes a double take. He recognizes him from a few meets. A concert turned shoot out, playing pool at Josies, and even enjoying tea, biscuits and what have you. And he felt the tiredness from him too. he signs "The hell you two been doing?" he shakes himself off "Feels like you fought an army" he signs, the synthetic voice somehow having a dry tone to it.

He takes the mug and feels its warmth a moment before taking a careful drink. His other hand stays free and does some gestures which couldn't readily be recognized as ASL "Thanks Bud. And you can find better reading than that. Try reading the Captain Hazard comic books" and yes, he was dead serious about that.
Jillian Holtzmann No creamer. No sugar. Once the coffee is poured, Holtz takes it wholesale. The mug is turned up. One gulp, two gulps. Three. Four.

And down goes the mug. The coffee is downed rather quickly, and Holtzmann slides the mug back over toward 'Andy' idly, continuing to give him a sort of odd look as she sort of... squints behind her glasses. She doesn't say anything, but she just leans against the counter.

As she's questioned by the other figure, the Gorilla-like man, she glances over, giving him some attention. "I'm just in town on business," she remarks lightly. "I work for an investigation team out of New York. I was sent here to follow up on some leads, but it turns out they were dead ends." She shrugs. "Can't win 'em all, right?"
Mon-El     "Uhhhh..." Lar peers at Andy tiredly. "Yeah, sure. Coffee would be...good. Not that it'll actually do anything for me, but why not." he mutters, sitting up a bit straighter or at least trying to. He rubs his face and looks at Kid as he asks where he's been. "One word. Apokolips." he replies. "If that even means anything to you," he continues with a sigh.
Andrew Bennett "Can't win 'em all," Andy replies in kind. He refills Jillian's mug, before he turns to bring out Kid's first burger. The place has only the one cook at this hour, so the food is coming out a bit slower. "Ah, New York. I spent some time there. Good amount of time. Nice city, really. I love Brooklyn. And Central Park? Beautiful. Especially near Christmas." The man gets Lar is coffee as well. He then cocks his head to the side. "What about the Apocalypse?"
Jua Mandala     He signs "Actually it does. From what I remember....those where the guys who invaded the earth awhile ago. Still owe that darkrye, darkpie? No no..." finger snaps and he signs "Darkside guy a thanks." and he means it. "In the most ironic of ways. Still...I cannot imagine what kind of hell hole he came from" he pats Lar roughly. Of course lars can more than take it, it more Kid not used to do such actions.

He looks to Andrew and signs "Actually, your pretty lucky this place even survived! Practicaly half the city was flattened" an exageration to be sure. He picks up the buger and takes out a nice big bite - and the apparent anger and aggression he had instantly seems to dissapiate as he lets out a happy rumble.
But he does spare Jillian a glance as well and signs "Investigation eh? What do you investigate? Health Code Violations? Criminals? Dissappearances? The para-noooooormal" he let out that strangle chuckle again.
Jillian Holtzmann "That last one."

Once the coffee is refilled, Jillian is quick to pick it up, and begin sipping. This time, she nurses it, rather than straight up downing it. She sips slowly, beginning to sit up and straighten her back a little bit as the caffination begins to actually do some good for her. She glances down the way to the other newcomer, then, tilting her head slightly as she squints. Superheroes and the like aren't an uncommon thing, she knows, but when she gives him a once over, she can't help but be a little surprised.

"Counting yourself lucky, maybe?"

Another sip of her coffee, before glancing back toward 'Andy,' whom she squints at. "I guess not," she remarks idly, shrugging. "But, it's all right."
Andrew Bennett     "Ah, right," the man behind the counter grunts, recalling the invasion. "-That-." He brushes his fingers back through his dark hair with the singular white streak. He nods to Kid. "I was here when it happened, helping keep it safe. One of the only reasons it is still here. That and folks in Gotham often look out for eachother...when the chips are down, anyways." He shrugs and glances between them all.

His gaze drifts to Jillian when she admits that she investigates the paranormal. "I thought I recognized you," he says after a few moments. He doesn't out her, though.
Jua Mandala     "Paranormal eh?" he signs in thought. "Outta check out Sunnydale" he tells her. "Now THAT place got some issues of the supernatural Kind." His expression that of someone with first hand experience, and perhaps even a story or two to tell of it.
Another bite and his burger is nearly done. Even when Andy seems to recognize her, Kid made no indication he did. Either because he really didn't or didn't care. There is a high chance that it is both.
Mon-El     "Not the 'apocalypse' as you're thinking of it." Lar clarifies. "I meant Apokolips, Sector 38. You know the place Darkseid is from, the Darkseid who invaded Earth not too long ago." Then he nods at Kid's explanation regarding Darkseid. "Yeah, -that- Apokolips. Nasty place." he shakes his head.

Hopefully Kid didn't try to pat Lar -too- hard, because if he did, he might have risked harming himself.

An exasperated look crosses his face when Jill mentions the paranormal. "Ugh, magic. And mystics and paranormal and all that junk. I hate it, it never makes any sense." he grumbles. But it mostly because he can't always just punch it away.
Jillian Holtzmann "Well, in this case, it's *science,*" Holtz remarks, glancing down the bar toward Lar and kind of cocking her head in a sort of stand-offish manner. Though, she doesn't get *too* offended. Instead, she focuses on her coffee, glancing back toward 'Andy' as he mentions recognizing her.

"Yeah, you look familiar, yourself."

Her brow furrows, then, but likewise, she says nothing else, and instead, she continues to sip on her coffee.
Andrew Bennett Andy nods to Lar. "Yeah, got it. What're you doing out there? You're a mask, then?," he asks, using a common civilian term for superhero. He brings out Kid's second burger, and Jillian's order as well. He glances over at Lar again on his comment about the paranormal, and the man chuckles softly, nodding. He refills people's coffee, staying quiet on the subject.

He blinks when Jillian says she recognizes him, and he hesitates for a second. "...Fair enough."
Jua Mandala     "Magic. Science. Same thing" is Kids signed comment "Just so happens one you understand, the other you do not." he doesn't seem bothered by it "But it sure is fun when you run into ghosts and all that" his grin ever wider as if having good memories. He gives a bob of his head in thanks to Andy and starts on the second burger just as happily as he did the first.
But than he seems curiouse. Sometimes Kid is obliviouse to certain social norms and all that. And so he signs in curiosity "Whats a Mask? I mean I know what a mask is, but" he thumbs at Lar mid-sign before continueing "Your calling him one. What is it?" he was glancing between both of them, ands than Jillian as well to see if she could fill him in.
Mon-El     Lar arches a brow at Jill, looking as if he is about to make some argument, but decides he's too exhausted for that right now. Instead he just shrugs. "Whatever. I wasn't trying to offend, or anything. Not insinuating it's your fault it exists."

He seems equally puzzled by Andy's question. He does spend a lot of time in space. "Uh...no, I mean, I'm not literally a mask, but I assume you mean it in a different way that I'm not really familiar with? I mean, I don't usually wear one..."
Jillian Holtzmann Once the order is placed in front of her, Jill grabs her silverware, and into the eggs and bacon she goes. "Oh, no," she remarks, waving a fork toward Lar, shaking her head, continuing to eat. "No offense taken. It's just one of those things," she replies lightly.

Meanwhile, she continues to shovel down the food as if it's the best thing she's ever eaten. Ever. Which, considering the fact it's probably the first time she's eaten all day, it really is kind of the best thing ever.
Andrew Bennett "It's...really not the same thing," the man behind the counter says a bit grumpily. He looks back over to Lar. "Mask. It means a super hero or villain. Someone who dresses up and fights or causes crime." He shrugs a bit. "I didn't coin the term." He steps away for a moment to help another person with their order, briefly leaving the customers alone.
Jua Mandala "Sure it is. Science. Do something, if the same thing happens consistently, presto! You can a theory going. Magic. Take these ingrediants, you make a potion, the same potion made each time. You cast that spell, you get that effect. Most of the time." he shrugs "or am I missing something important?" he signs. He seemed to have a rather simplistic view of things.
Mon-El     "Oh." Lar hadn't heard that one before. Huh. "Learn something new every day, I guess." he says, shrugging as Andy goes off to help another customer for a moment.

At the magic vs. science debate, he just shakes his head. "Sure, sure however you want to think about it I guess. But I'm willing to bet the people who would actually know what they're talking about would beg to differ."
Andrew Bennett "Not the same thing," the pale man responds, simply. He doesn't elaborate, though. He brushes his fingers back through his skunk hair again and shrugs his shoulders, before he turns to refill somebody else's coffee. "So, why Apokalips?," he asks, as he steps back over.
Jua Mandala     Kid shrugs and signs "Find me a difference, and I might start considering them different." he says simply. He has yet to see anyone show him a real difference between the two. He finishes up his second burger happily enough.
Mon-El     "Oh, you know, they kidnapped Superman, the usual." Lar says somewhat wryly, waving a hand dismissively. "So the League had to get uh, other 'masks' to go after him and save him and all that. We had a good number, so mission successful and everything. He'll just need a lot of yellow sun which this planet has plenty of for a while to recover but I'm sure he's had worse."

A pause. "And what about yourself? Are -you- a mask?" he asks suddenly. "I mean, if you don't want to tell me, that's fine." He can tell 'Andy' isn't just human, though.
Andrew Bennett "Not my business to teach you properly," the man responds, a hint of a British accent creeping through in his annoyance. He brushes his hand down over his sleeve, picking away a small piece of lint before he glances between the three. He then turns to collect the piece of pie for the gorilla, setting it down with a new fork. He arches an eyebrow at Mon-El and nods a bit with a chuckle. He hesitates at the question and then shrugs a shoulder.

"I'm not a normal guy, but...I don't really wear a costume. Nothing against it, though. I tend to do what I do in jeans and a t-shirt."
Jua Mandala "Then it's settled. There the same." Kid signs with a shrug. Ahh, the rebelliouse teenager. But if no one wants to point out the difference, than he sees no reason to change his mind.
But he moves on none the less, and signs "Heh. Whose normal these days?. But heh, I can understand. Wearing a costume seems uncomfortable. Easier to just get folks to see something else" he signs. He than looks more towards Mon-El "Superman...isn't that, the big guy in blue? From uh...metropolish?" he asks. He rolls his shoulders transitioning from the prior topic, a bit behind.
Mon-El     "I can tell." Lar remarks when Andy admits he isn't normal. "Honestly, sometimes I wish I could do what I do in jeans and a T-shirt. But, you know. Those can't exactly handle what I usually find myself doing most of the time."

He quirks an eyebrow at Kid. Is this guy serious? "Metropolis? No, he's from Krypton." Duh. "You really don't pay attention, do you?" he smirks a little bit.
Jillian Holtzmann Normally, Jillian would want to argue. It's a hill she'd die on. Having a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering prepared her for that kind of thing. But with being so tired... and so hungry... nah. Arguing semantics of magic versus science was just not worth it right now. Instead, she breaks off some more of the bacon from her plate, continuing to eat, sipping on her coffee as she listens to the others talk.

Though, as 'Andy' remarks about not 'being a normal guy,' she snickers a little. "Kind of the understatement of the last few centuries," she mumbles lightly, before shoving another piece of bacon in her mouth, and taking a bite of her eggs and some of the hashbrowns.
Andrew Bennett Andy shakes his head at Kid but doesn't comment on it again. "Superman is one of the most famous individuals...ever. A beacon of hope...even to something like me." He glances aside to bring out some more food for another person before he wanders back. He frowns softly at Jillians' comment about him and clears his throat.
Jua Mandala "Normally when somewhere comments about where they are from, they do not mean where they are born" Kid signs to Lar "Unless...was superman a hero on Krypton first?" he than wonders "Even then, seems like he been on earth a long time, so saying he from earth if he went somewhere not earth would be appropiate" he shrugs confusing himself at this point. "But eh. Some things are just more interesting than History"
He looks to Andy "Beacon of hope. Sure. Guess he is to alot of people." just not Kid. "And I hope he stays that way" and despite his seeming lack of knowledge, and perhaps not seeming to consider superman a beacon of hope himself, he does seem genuine in the comment he signs. Hope was important, but not all hope came from the man in blue.
But than he looks between Jillian having heard that coughed comment, than Lar who mentioned Andy not being quite human, and finally at Andy who mentions being 'something' instead of 'someone'. "....alright. Is something going on here?" he signs in askance.
Mon-El     Lar peers at Jill as she makes a comment about the last few centuries. "What do you mean, exactly?" Then his gaze moves back over to Andy as he returns from serving another diner patron.

An awkward glance is thrown Andy's way as the man clears his throat and frowns in a sort of indignant fashion. "Uh...." Suddenly he sticks out his hand for a shake, trying to defuse the situation. "I'm Lar Gand, by the way."

Kid's speculation of Superman's life on Krypton just earns him a quiet scoff from Lar. "I don't think he remembers much about what Krypton was like, and he's probably better off that way. They were a bunch of snobs, anyway. I mean, not all of them. Maybe his family was different. But, -most- of them." Yeah, he's a little bit racist that way. It's hard to help that, with parents like the ones he has.
Andrew Bennett "You seem to be really into semantics and technicalities," the man grunts about Kid. He narrows his eyes a bit at Kid when he talks about Superman, and for a briefest moment there is the oddest, slightest sound. A growl. Like...an animal growl. It dies swiftly, though, and the placcid, calm demeanor returns as if nothing happened. "Right."
He glances down at the hand and then offers his own, shaking it. He is warm to the touch, even if he is pale.
Jillian Holtzmann "I'm just a hungry woman," Jillian responds, finishing off her coffee with one final swig, forking up the last few bites of her eggs and hashbrowns together onto a bit of toast, scarfing them down together. She glances up toward Kid, smiling a little bit as she wipes her mouth off with the napkin from the silverware, before glancing back toward Andrew, tilting her head. She smiles a little bit, continuing to look toward him, watching him carefully.

"Just an expression," she finally remarks, glancing toward Lar, tilting her head toward him and shrugging a little. Nah, she's not going to completely out him. Meanwhile, she glances down at her empty plate, and toward her empty coffee mug.
Mon-El     Lar tilts his head to the side slightly at that slight little growl. Huh. Well, he knew Andy wasn't normal so he wasn't all that surprised. He shakes Andy's hand gently as he usually does with uh, people who are less tough than him. "Nice to meet you, Andy." Then he looks over at Jill. "And Just A Hungry Woman." he says with genuinely friendly smile. "Hm. Can I call you 'Just'?" Is he trolling, or is he really that out of touch with Terran things? It's not exactly clear.

He stands up and puts some cash down on the bar. "Well, you guys will have to tell me your stories sometime." he says amicably. "I'm sure you have plenty of good ones." Then he's out the door.
Jua Mandala      Kid returns the growl, mostly because yea, he felt the anger and annoyance. He seems to shake it off a moment later, a shiver of annoyance as he seems to grumble at himself. But none the less he signs "I am. I had to be. Hard habit to break." he admits plain and simple. But it makes him go quiet as if it takes him to a place he rather not be.
He loooks at the cherry pie he has yet to touch, his lips twitching almost as if he would fly into an animalistic rage. But he seems to snap out of it and signs "...yea got a box for this?" The synthetic voice was alot quieter. But he none the less gives Lar a wave good bye, giving Jill a small nod to the expression part.
Andrew Bennett     Andy nods a bit to that, as if not having an issue with Kid leaving. The man moves over to collect a to-go box and brings it back over. "It's really good, so...enjoy." He sets the tabs down for everyone, as it appears to be the end of his shift, anyways.
Jillian Holtzmann "I've got to catch the next bus, myself," Jill remarks softly, moving to take her wallet out, taking a few bucks out and sliding it across the bar toward Andrew as she watches him. She tilts her head toward him, nodding lightly. "Thanks for the coffee and the late brinner, Andy," she remarks idly. She *was* paying attention! She quirks her eyebrow slightly at him, before glancing toward Kid...

"I never actually introduced myself! And that's so rude, I'm sorry. Jillian Holtzmann, and it's been a pleasure," she remarks softly, bowing lightly with a flourish, now that she's got a little bit of pep back in her step with some food in her system. "But I *must* be getting getting home. Don't wanna turn into a pumpkin, after all," she snickers, winking. She then glances toward Andy... as if she wants to say something, but she doesn't. Maybe it's more of a 'I'll be back for you' stare.
