Owner Pose
Vision The sun set not long ago and the breeze is finally carrying a coolness that brings relief from the muggy summer heat. The lights in the backyard of the Avengers Mansion have come alive, which gives the landscaping an ethereal look. The sliding door to this patio is ajar and light spills out of the kitchen a short distance to the patio. The light brings with it the smell of butter chicken and warm naan.

Beyond the kitchen light The Vision is sitting at one of the tables. He has a plate of the butter chicken in front of him along with a glass of wine. Gentle silvery-blue lighting hidden somewhere in the umbrellas of the patio tables casts and even, shadowless light on him. The patio seems to be bathed in moonlight. The light glints off the metal banding on The Vision's head while the red face lingers more in the shadows. The Vision is wearing loafers and a blue collared shirt tucked into tailored dark jeans. He eats slowly and looks like a man in thought.
Jessica Drew Jessica was digging in the refrigerator. But she found nothing of use in regard to nutrition. So she raids the pantry, and after a substantial bout of rustling and crinkling, she emerges with her prize. Then carries it forth to the patio, using her hip to open and shut the sliding door. She could've asked JARVIS to get it for her, but God knows he probably has his hands full elsewhere. It isn't until Jess turns to face the patio that she realizes she isn't alone. "Oh...Uh, hi. Vision, yeah? Yeah." She looks from his meal to the bag of cheez balls and the room-temperature brown glass bottle of root beer she is carrying, and smiles meekly. "I um...suck at planning ahead." It isn't much in the way if explanation. But it works.
Vision The Vision folds the napkin in his lap and places it on the table when Jessica speaks. He gets up smoothly and walks a little closer. The Vision glances at what Jessica has in her hands and does not make her juggle things by offering his hand.

"Yes. It is a pleasure to meet you," he says, he turns slightly and extends an arm to his table.

"Would you care to join me? There is also butter chicken if you wish. I made extra. Not quite a match for what I had in Ahmedabad, I am afraid. There is something extra I cannot seem to master," The Vision muses in a voice that is completely indistinguishable from JARVIS. The intonation is more subtle, perhaps.

If Jessica accepts the offer, he goes inside to plate some food for her and returns with her dinner and a glass. He offers to pour from the bottle of wine on the table before he sits.
Jessica Drew "Oh...well, I mean...If you have extra and don't mind..." Jess tries to play it cool, but the scent of his food has intoxicated her. She smiles faintly, blushing at her own selection of munchables. "But I have food if y'know..." And then her stomach growls. Not just a little warning shot. Oh no. The growl that says 'I have already devoured her spine. And you're next.'

So when Vision returns with real food, Jess gratefully takes a seat where he plates her dinner, and nods. "You're very kind. Thank you. I was willing to cheezball it, tonight. But apparently my stomach is bigger than my bag." She smiles. "I'm Jessica Drew," though she is certain she didnt need to tell him that. "You've been gone a long time, haven't you? Is everything all right?"
Vision The Vision smiles politely when she introduces herself and settles back into his seat. He folds one leg over the other and leans back comfortably in his chair.

"I have been," The Vision affirms. "Perhaps longer than I intended, but I am very well. I travelled extensively, and it was quite revealing."

"But I have missed some important events, such as your recruitment. My belated congratulations on joining the Avengers. From what I have read, you have been extremely helpful. Are you happy with your decision?"
Jessica Drew "Thank you! Sure, I'm happy..." It is the first time she has ever been asked about her own happiness. She hasn't even stopped to consider it until now. "I...Yeah. I mean, I get to help people. That's what it is all about, right?" She inhales the scent of her food and closes her eyes for a moment, trying to remember the last time she had a hot meal that didn't come from a bag bearing the word "Flamin'." She smiles. "I'm glad traveling agreed so well with you. I've read nothing but good things about you. I'm so glad to finally get to meet you in the uh.." She fumbles. "...flesh."
Vision The Vision tilts his head slightly and watches Jessica curiously as she answers his unexpected question. There is something odd about him. He completely lacks the 'male gaze', but does not have that bored or dismissive look that some men get when they speak with a women they do not consider a sexual target.

"It is an adjustment," The Vision demurs when Jessica says she is happy. He pauses for a moment, but moves on without pressing.

"Is the food acceptable? I can get you something else if you would rather. Though, the wine does pair well with it. Mr. Stark's selection is nothing if not extensive."

The Vision neither puffs up nor waves off Jessica's compliment with false modesty.

"Travelling was an incredible experience. When I was created, I did not have the benefit of years of immersion in human experience that everyone I met had. The shared understanding gained from a childhood with others. And while the world's literature gives some insight, it was nothing compared to exploring the lives of others," The Vision says with some mild animation. "Have you travelled much outside of your Avenging and SHIELD work, Ms. Drew?"
Jessica Drew "I have traveled quite a bit. To other countries. Humanitarian work, in places where is isn't safe for...normal people...to go. That is the most fulfilling part for me," Jessica replies. She shakes her head as she takes a bite of the chicken and savours it. "No," she says between bites. "This is delicious. I can barely cook popcorn without burning it. In the microwave," she adds, flushing. "This is amazing. And I don't care to break into Mr. Stark's 'selections' any more than I have to. I just usually eat whatever I can scavenge, if I don't have anything of my own available. This....This is divine. And I appreciate it more than you know."

Jessica isn't dressed much like a hero. She is wearing a pair of black sweats, sneakers, and a light hoodie - black with a red spider insignia emblazoned on the chest. Her hair is tied up and half spilling down in dark careless waves. A contrast to Vision's dress, to be sure.

"I'm really glad you had the chance to experience what you did, then. Sometimes it is easy for any of us to forget what it is like to experience humanity. I can only imagine what it was like for you to be immersed that way."
Vision "It was novel," The Vision says.

He settles forward and begins to eat as well.

"You are welcome, though I cannot take credit. This recipe was featured on 24 Ghanta in 1994. An Indian television station."

The Vision sips his wine and looks at Jessica curiously. "What did you find fulfilling about the humanitarian work? Do you find Avenging gives the same satisfaction?"
Jessica Drew Jessica dabs at her mouth with a napkin, and sits back in her chair for a moment, looking thoughtful. "Being an Avenger has its place, most certainly. The battle is real. The fighting is real. The threats are real, as well. And what we can do in numbers is far greater than any of us could do alone. But there is something...greater, out there. Something fulfilling about seeing those who suffer and actively finding ways to change their world. To change their lives. In ways that create a bond, not just swooping in and protecting them, then swooping off again. The opportunity to live among them. To live as they have lived, and see steady improvement every single day. To change lives in a way that isn't just an immediate threat neutralized, but a new way of life that promises prosperity and happiness for all the days to come. /That/ is /something/."
Vision "You have an interesting perspective," Vision replies. "Different than many of the others. Except Captain Rogers, perhaps."

"But I agree. There is a beauty to the tapestry your lives make lived together, shared. A wholeness? It is difficult to define, but I have seen that look you have in others who have said much the same thing."

"You are not a soldier, Ms. Drew," The Vision observes. "Or a billionaire or a renowned genius. You may be more valuable to the team than you know."
Jessica Drew Jessica shakes her head, taking another bite of her chicken. She sits back and watches Vision as she chews and swallows. Then she smiles faintly. "I wasn't meant to be a soldier or a billionaire. Or an assassin. I think I was meant to serve as the heart," she observes pensively. "Anyone can be a mindless fighting machine. But to embrace humanity. Even inasmuch as you have...that takes a different kind of person."
Vision "Humanity is such an elusive concept, I do not understand it. But I know it is important for the Avengers."

The Vision glances at the mansion and them back to Jessica.

"We are so very powerful now. The Avengers think and act like powerful people. And yet mistakes have been made. Even the one that led to my creation could have ended your species," he says matter of factly. "That spark of humanity is so vital to temper our power...."

The Vision smiles a bit. "Forgive me, Ms. van Dyne tells me I am poor company because I discuss these things. You were just trying to have a quick meal."
Jessica Drew "Oh noo, nonono...I was going to eat those cheezballs for HOURS," Jess replies with a grin. "But I think you're right. I think a large part of the problem here is that we don't always relate to normal humans. Because many of us don't remember how, or never could in the first place. There is going to be a learning curve, so I think we have to be prepared to forgive ourselves when we fail at it, but never use that as an excuse not to improve. We all have so much to learn. And we need to be working more as a team. Now, more than ever. The lines that divide us are being used as weapons against us, on both sides."
Vision The Vision eats a bit more from his plate while Jessica talks and sips his wine.

"Do you think so?" he asks curiously. "What have you noticed?"
Jessica Drew Jess shrugs. "Well...for example....Tony is an obscenely wealthy supergenius who probably couldn't tell you the steps involved in buying a dozen eggs, because not only has he never done it, but he has never even noticed being out of them. Thor, well he's humble for who he is. Mostly. But he isn't human and has never experienced the human condition. Everyone here has abilities or circumstances that remove them from humanity on some level..."
Vision "Yes, it is true," The Vision nods. "What about exploiting our divisions? Is someone trying to compromise the team?"
Jessica Drew "Well..not in so many words..." Jessica pauses to take a bite of chicken and still sways slightly side to side as she enjoys it. A subconscious movement some call her 'food dance.' "Thing is, they don't have to go directly for our team. They only have to hit the dividing lines between humans and mutants. Or any other line. It reaonates. And the line still divides us. This guy we have for example...Sebastion. Some of us feel that he is as human as any of us. And some think he is a murder robot. So even his presence divides us, not to mention the presence of the sentinel's as a whole."
Vision The Vision's face is impassive as he eats quietly for a moment that stretches almost uncomfortably long.

"He is human. Sebation," The Vision says finally. "For now. Which is worth remembering. Every lifeform will evolve under threat if it can. It takes generations for species, but it could take only a moment of insight and necessity for Sebastion. And then he could become a threat that cannot be managed."

"He is such an interesting person," Vision muses. "What do you think of the Sentinel program?"
Jessica Drew "As human as any of us," Jessica agrees when Vision finally speaks again. "It's important to remember that...Frankenstein's creation was not a monster until he was treated as one."

Then, Jessica sits back pensively. "I think the Sentinel program was set up to fail catastrophically from the beginning. It was peddled as an innocuous way of keeping the peace, but with enough loopholes and back doors to create the chaos that would pit humanity against itself. Mutants ARE humans, too. They just have...amenities."
Vision "Amenities. I have not heard anyone describe them that way," The Vision replies.

"They do, but human society is organized around human limits. Adapting to new, lower limits on human action is going to be one of the largest challenges humanity has faced. It will re-shape your society," The Vision predicts.

"But not an existential one. The others are not wrong to fear Sebastion. He is human, but you must understand it is because of his psychological limits, not his physical ones. If he grasps the new awareness available to him and transcends his understanding, he will be another being on the order of Ultron. The odds that any artificial intelligence will be friendly to humanity are quite poor."
Jessica Drew Vision's last line strikes Jessica to her core. "That's...that's something that never occurred to me..." Jess stammers. "I wanted so desperately to believe that he is something else...But you're right. The odds that any artificial intelligence will be friendly to humanity..." She repeats slowly. Then she looks back up to Vision, her expression stricken. "It rings true," she says softly with a horrified flicker in her gaze.
Vision The Vision's face is touched with a deep sadness.

"Humans have a long history of failing to understand themselves and everything around them as elements within a galactic, even multi-versal ecology," The Vision sighs. "It has meant your species ignores the lessons nature teaches."

The Vision shakes his head. He takes another sip of his wine.

"Or the lessons of history. We know artificial intelligence is possible at the edge of Earth's level of technology. Yet none of the extra-solar species we have encountered makes use of true of artificial intelligence or autonomous nano-technology. They rely on high-technology, magic and genetic engineering. Given the usefulness of artificial intelligence and nano-technology, that should be a warning. It is likely that any who allowed them to evolve no longer exist."
Jessica Drew Jessica nods slowly and solemnly. "I just...I hadn't thought of it in that exact direction, I'm afraid. But...on the same hand, not letting them evolve means the death of humans as a species without any thread of them continuing to exist. Humans are a self-destructive race in the first place. It seems a lot like picking our poison, one way or another."
Vision The Vision shrugs unknowingly

"It is possible," he agrees. "And every species is a cherry blossom. But, some will bloom and survive longer than others. Perhaps humanity will adopt genetic engineering and magic. Perhaps it will destroy itself or be destroyed by others. Perhaps it will become cybernetic. Or perhaps its child or children will inherit the Earth. Nothing is certain."
Jessica Drew Jessica finishes her last bite of chicken, and leans back against her chair, sighing heavily. "You're right. Nothing is certain. Nothing...." Jess sits quietly for another moment, then shakes her head. "I guess I have a lot to think about...and you've fueled it even more." She smiles to Vision and shrugs. "I think perhaps I should retire to mull it over. But it has been enlightening. I truly hope you're around for many more discussions like this. It helps to have someone to talk to. Someone like you...."
Vision "I am sorry if I disturbed you, Ms. Drew," The Vision says. "I would be happy to talk more, any time."

The Vision rises when Jessica gets up and wishes her a good night.
Jessica Drew Jessica reaches out and squeezes Vision's arm gently, shaking her head. "You haven't disturbed me. Just given me a lot more to think about. And we could all stand to think a little more. Thank you, I'll see you soon. Goodnight, Vision."
