Gwendolyn For a lot of people, sleeping in a new bed in a new place is a tough thing to do. The sheets are scratchy, the mattress is lumpy, it's too hot or too cold, or there's someone snoring on the other side of the wall. Except, in Gwendolyn's case, the other choice was outside in the wilderness on whatever park bench or grate she happened to find that was slightly warmer than before. Being here, in the X-mansion, was like being at a resort in the Bahamas, except with more mutants and education instead of frosty umbrella drinks and suntan lotion.

Although that might be here. She hasn't really checked just yet.

After spending the morning sleeping and in the shower, cleaning up her clothes and finding a few others that were donated, Gwendolyn dressed in her covering clothes, pulled on her goggles and earplugs, and headed down to the kitchen to get something to eat. Finding it deserted was a nice surprise, which meant she got to cook whatever she wanted. finding a fully-stocked pantry? That's even better. Who's making breakfast tacos? This girl, that's who. A mixing bowl, flour, salt, baking powder, and shortening are all gathered and, standing near the sink where she can easily wash her hands off, she's carefully measuring out things, ready to make the dough for tortillas.
Samuel Guthrie Samuel Guthrie comes in the back door. The young man is wearing jeans and t-shirt with a yankee's ball cap on. He has a basket with him, and inside it is fresh produce tomatoes, ocra, cucumbers, squash and the like. He walks over to the sink, and sets the basket down, looking you over, "Little small to be Bobby, Ah take it your Gwendolyn, the new student?"
Gwendolyn Her head jerks over at the sound of the door opening, Gwendolyn's eyes covered completely with what look like oversized ski goggles, reflected in the light. The misshapen hooded sweatshirt she wears is rolled up a little, revealing her bare forearms, ridges of spines following the bones of her arm up to her elbow. She was working on her dough, kneading it on the counter with a good dusting of flour, getting it more elastic than sticky as she pushed it against itself. "Um...yes. Yes I am. That's still taking some getting used to, being the new student. I mean..." She lets out a small chuckle. "I only just got here yesterday."
Samuel Guthrie Samuel Guthrie will smile, and after washing his hands and drying them will offer one to the girl, not seeming bothered at all by the spines "Ah'm Sam Guthrie, I will be one of the ones who helps with your education around here." He smiles and says "Remy is going to be happy to meet you, he is from Louisiana also. He is one of the other teachers. If you have any questions or need any help just ask, it aint been to many years since Ah was new here along with some friends of mine.
Gwendolyn Gwendolyn would shake hands - really, she would, but she's got flour and dough all over them. It takes her a second to wash her hands and, yes, pull on a glove to hide the oddly-colored skin on her palm before she reaches over to shake the offered hand, firmly, before going back to making chunks of dough about the size of a golfball and covers them all with a warm dishtowel to proof a little. "Well...thank you very much for your help, Mister Guthrie. I was a'posta meet someone named Scott and Jean, but they're at a convention, or something, so I guess I'll get them when I get back. Somethin' about paperwork and getting me on as a student." She shrugs with one shoulder, looking over the basket of produce that was brought in. "Mind if I steal some of that from yeh? Tomato and pepper?"
Samuel Guthrie Samuel Guthrie smiles and says "Go right ahead help yourself that's what they are there for. He moves to the fridge and pulls out a pitcher of tea, "You care for a glass?" He will offer . "Jean is headmaster right now and Scott her right hand man and all. We can get you into some classes while wait for them to get back if your wanting to or can wait on them.
Gwendolyn      Over to the stove, Gwendolyn goes, finding a ten inch skillet that's placed on the stove to start warming up. The tomato and peppers Samuel brought are taken with a nod of thanks and an onion the size of a baseball is acquired as well. All of these are carefully chopped into bits and tossed into the pan along with a small knob of butter to start carmelizing. Multitasking Gwen, ladies and Gentlemen.

"It's been a while since I've been in school. I think I have copies of all of the documents you might need to do things in my stuff upstairs. B'fore I headed out from home I grabbed anything that might be considered useful and my birth certificate and social card and stuff were in the folder."
Gwendolyn "Oh...and tea. Yes, please." She pauses. "Sweet tea or not sweet tea? I know it's a southern thing..."
Samuel Guthrie Samuel Guthrie smiles a bit and says "There is enough of us around there is always sweet tea." He says and pours her a glass, it aint sugar water but is a good sweet tea. Trust me, have made sure they had decent tea since I was able to get some and make it. Good, we will get all the official paper work done and set up. So, what types of things interest you if Ah may ask.
Gwendolyn At least it seems they know how to make a good sweet tea. GWendolyn had some on the trip up that made her breathe faster because of how sweet it was. Good sweet tea strikes a balance between sweet and bitter from the tea, and judging from the color, this one is pretty good. "Well..." She pauses, stirring the pan with a wooden spatula. "I was in all advanced placement classes in high school. Lots of science and biology and stuff. I play violin, too. Mostly fiddle stuff, but I can do classical if you really need something from Bach for some reason. Harder'n hell to dance to, that stuff."
Samuel Guthrie Samuel Guthrie chuckles and says "You just have to make sure you can do the toe dances and the squats, and the country boy actually does the ballet moves he is talking about. "Ah do prefer something a bit faster and modern myself. We have some very good teachers for the sciences. Dr. McCoy bring the number one, but Professor Green, and Professor Parker are both up there as well. Ah am sure they will find ways of keeping you challenged and interested.
Gwendolyn      The sizzling of the pan is the only sound that can be heard for a while, Gwendolyn lost in thought, gazing at it through her goggles. She takes a breath and turns, hopping up to sit on the counter next to the stove, waiting for the vegetables to finish, her bare feet kicking back and forth slightly. "I just hope I can keep up." She looks over at him. "Been out of the market for a while. Runnin' for your life'll do that for a girl."
Samuel Guthrie Samuel Guthrie nods, and says "Well, Ah am sure they will get you caught up without burying ya to bad. Mind If Ah ask ya something personal?
Gwendolyn Gwendolyn flips up the towel, giving the dough balls a critical view, covering them again after a second. Rising needs to happen more. She gestures to Samuel with one hand, kind of a 'bring it on' sort of motion. "What'cha got?"
Samuel Guthrie Samuel Guthrie says, "The hoodie, goggles, and such, you need them to help protect you from the environment, or habit from having to hide yourself in public?""
Gwendolyn "Well..." Gwendolyn sighs and lowers her head. "Little of column a, little of column b, really. When my mutation hit, all of my senses got turned up to eleven out of a possible five. B'fore ah found these, I was havin' to be out at night or on overcast days. And the earplugs are the only thing that keeps me havin' a normal conversation. I take these out and that fry pan sizzling is too loud for me to make out other sounds."
Samuel Guthrie Samuel Guthrie hmms and says "Ok, well we will need to talk to Dr. McCoy see if we can find something a bit bulky for you if your interested, and also Mr. Logan maybe able to help you a bit, he has heightened senses as well, not to the extreme you have but maybe able to help you with some techniques to help with it.
Gwendolyn While this is going on, Gwendolyn is busy with eggs, cracking them into a bowl and beating them into a froth, pouring them over the vegatables in the pan to start scrambling. If she had an extra arm or two it wouldn't look out of place, but she knows her way around a kitchen. The pan is moved off the main flame to finish and the dough balls are quickly turned into rounds with expert hands. As big as abuelita's knee, she liked to say. "I've only been here a day." She restates, the tortilla going into the pan and cooking on one side for 30 seconds or so, then flipped. "You guys are already doing so much for me. I still am waiting for the other shoe to drop and find out you're, I don't know, slavery people or fundamentalist anarchits or something."
Samuel Guthrie Samuel Guthrie nods, and says "Most people feel that way at first, it is understandable. We are just here to help, we hope for one day mankind and mutant kind to live together neither having to fear the other. While we can't control folks, well some folks can but that's a different thing al together. We try to make sure mutants are safe, learn to use their powers safely and responsibly so that they don't hurt themselves or others accidently. We try to make the school the safe place you can learn to be you at.
Gwendolyn The pile of tortillas slowly grows as Gwendolyn makes them, transferring them from pan to plate until no more dough balls are left. "It's all we can really ask for, I guess. Just having a way to learn how to deal with this stuff." She gestures to the man. "At least you can get away without having to wear disguises."
Samuel Guthrie Samuel Guthrie says, "Well we have something that will help you with that as well. Ah am on the lucky side of that yea, my powers don't show unless Ah am using them, but there are quite a few here who look different, but to be honest while something new or different might catch the eye for a bit, around here you soon learn to see the person not just their physical appearance, but who they are."
Gwendolyn "It's hard for me to do that." Gwendolyn says. "This mutation is pretty much the only thing I've got going for me at this point." Tortillas done, Gwendolyn finds a pair of plates and starts dishing up food. Two tortillas go down on each, along with a pile of the egg/pepper/onion/tomato mixture, topped with salt, pepper and cheese, and then rolled up. Breakfast tacos you'd find in mexico. "Thanks much, Samuel." She offers him one of the two plates.
Samuel Guthrie Samuel Guthrie takes one of the plates, and says "Well so far looks like your a pretty good cook, you might have to get with Shannon about who gets the kitchen first if you enjoy it, she is in here baking a lot. He will take a moment to try the food. "And your southern, and aint looked at me with a bless your heart yet, so seem nice."
Gwendolyn Gwendolyn can't help but smile a little at that, wrapping up her taco and taking a big bite of it, wiping the corner of her mouth with her thumb. "You get me in here with some fixin's an' I'll make you a chicken fried steak you'd slap your momma to have."
Samuel Guthrie Samuel Guthrie smiles and says "Well Ah don't know about that, as my momma would slap me right back and knock the taste out of my mouth so I could not taste the food." He jokes a bit and says "Have to make my chicken some time soon, not to hit, but have been known to throw a little extra heat in there for those who like it.
Gwendolyn "Nashville Hot or somethin' of your own design?" God knows what kind of heat these folk up here think is hot. Moving north, she found people who thought ketchup had too much of a kick to it, preferring sweeter things like syrup or, God forbid, Ranch. GWendolyn munches on her food, over the sink like a proper delinquent, so her taco remains fall on the plate or the sink, not on the floor.
Samuel Guthrie Samuel Guthrie eats and talks between bites "Well Ma's recipe is pretty light on the heat, she had a mess of us kids to feed, and chicken just was not one of the things we did hot. Since Ah have been out in the world a bit and seen some prefer it hot, Ah will usually make a batch or two normal, and then a batch with the heat, and as for the level depends who Ah know is eatting, but Ah aint gone ghost pepper or carolina reaper or anything.
Gwendolyn "We'll have to compare notes sometime." Gwendolyn says, finishing the first burrito and starting work on the second, munching quietly. "Cooking's one of the things I like to do. Mostly cajun stuff, though I can do southern pretty good, sometimes chili. Good stick-to-your-ribs food." She goes quiet for a second. "Baking though...that I don't have a handle on. Tortillas are about as good as I can get. Might have to talk to shannon about it later." She thinks on that for a second, blinking, although you can't see it behind the goggles. "It was good meetin' you, SAmuel."
Samuel Guthrie Samuel Guthrie nods, and says "And you Gwendolyn, and call me Sam. If you need anything let me know. I will tell Remy to look you up, he will be happy to hear a bit of home I am sure."
