A different type of training
Date of Scene: 26 June 2022
Location: Mel's Diner - Breakstone
Synopsis: Hawkeye drops by the diner to sign up for a charity event to which Sarah will also attend.
Cast of Characters: Hawkeye (Barton), Sarah Connor

Hawkeye (Barton) has posed:
Most superheroes will, from time to time, participate in social events. The big stars would then sign autographs and, mostly, pose for pictures. This isn't Clint Barton's way. True to his origins, the archer prefers to participate, help out for more basic social events, like the Free meal in the Park, a charity (yes, call it as you want) endeavour held by a group of restaurant owners to give back to those less fortunate by providing them a free meal in the park, with fun activites for the kids and all that jazz.

So today is when Barton decided to go sign up as a volunteer for the event. To do so, the call for volunteers required participants to drop by one of the restaurants to get more information.

So that's why Clint enters Mel's Diner on that quiet afternoon. There aren't many clients. The archer walks directly to the counter, since he's not here to eat, and waits for one of the staff.

Sarah Connor has posed:
This Sunday, people were taking the afternoon in the park - not the restaurant. Which normally wouldn't have bothered Sarah, except yesterday was a particularly dull day too, and she'd managed to get everything done yesterday. She swept; she filled; she dug under the seats for gum; she even washed *everything* from the bottom to the top.

In other words, Sarah was bored. And a bored Sarah wasn't a good thing.

When the bell rang indicating that someone was here, she looked up, and saw that Clint was here. He probably wasn't aware that she was working here again. Which made her grin on the inside.

"A coffee?" Of course, he was up by the registers. "Black?"

Hawkeye (Barton) has posed:
For a moment, the archer seems surprised. But again, diners are where Sarah can be found in most cases. It's true that sometimes you find what you weren't looking for.

"Hello, Sarah," Clint says, nodding at the offer. "Yes, coffee would be nice."

Glancing around, it's obvious that diners aren't the place to be by this nice summer day. Nonetheless, a family of five just entered, headed for a large table.

Reaching for his jeans pocket, the archer retrieves a folder flyer, which he opens. It's the call for volunteers for the Meal in the Park.

"I came to enlist as a volunteer, for the park gig next week. It mentions, training? I'm not sure what kind of training is required to serve dishes." Beat. This could sound weird, telling that to a server. "No offense, I mean, how difficult could it be? Serve hotdogs, burgers, fries and drinks?"

Sarah Connor has posed:
"Just in case you wondered, I did quit." Sarah filled a large cup with coffee. A take out cup. "Really I did. Unfortunately.."

Passing the cup over to him. "Ah. Training.. just a minute." Sarah took the time to take some menus over. The parents were harried, trying to get their kids seated. "How about I give you a couple of minutes, and some coffee? Maybe some kid drinks while you decide?"

And she went off to get them. "As it says you will need some training - depending on where you will work. The hardest ones are the tickets, and the gas grills. And even so, they shouldn't be too hard. You have barbecued before, haven't you?"

Hawkeye (Barton) has posed:
For a moment, Clint seems pensive. Where did she quit from? But hey, he's not here on official business, not that it would help if he asked for more details anyway.

Reaching for the cup of coffee, the archer turns around to lean against the counter, observing how Sarah looked after the customer. Being a customer is far different from being a staff, which he understood like anyone else. But /doing/ the work of a server was different.

As Sarah returned, the archer smiles, "BBQ? Ah, I'm the BBQ king." Well, at least in his mind. "I'm used to BBQ for lots of friends. But hrm, yeah, there will be - hopefully - more than ten people attending. And lots of kids, so a mini amusement park I guess." And then he laughs at the idea, "God, as long as I'm not in charge of kids." And more seriously, "Do you have the menu for the event?"

Sarah Connor has posed:
"Oh, the kids."

First, Sarah delivers the drinks, and as expected, they were nowhere near to placing an order. Not by a long shot.

"I suppose that answers that. You don't like kids?" Parking herself in front of the register, she goes on. "The kids can be a handful. Though, usually they tell me, they hire real performers, and something about the Y? Comes in and organizes that part."

"Can you cook 20-30 hamburgers and hotdogs at a time?"

Hawkeye (Barton) has posed:
Again, Clint waits until Sarah is done with the table, taking mental notes on how to do it. While he might not need to do the same at the event, it might still be useful.

"I love kids," the archer explains, "And they also seem to like me a lot," he explains, grinning, "Which might put me in trouble, cuz I can't refuse them nothing. So yeah, it would be best for me to be watching over burgers." Frowning, he thinks for a moment. But 20-30 at a time? "Hrm, yeah, with some method, I'm sure I can do this." That's not counting the fixing of the hotdogs according to everyone's tastes. It could easily turn into Diner Dash very quickly.

Sarah Connor has posed:
Luckily, most people can doctor their own hamburgers and hotdogs..

"Yeah, we're talking big grills - even bigger than the ones that the hotdogs vendors use. We rent them for the occasion. You would be with 4 others as well. We're talking hundreds of people." And by 100's Sarah means thousands. But ease him in first!

Finally the table is ready to order.. Kinda. The kids had tons of questions. Did it have this. Could I have that instead. Could we share our plates but make so that each plate is identical, half and half.

It went on.

The parents were mortified. "Don't worry about it, " Sarah told them. "I've had worse." And eventually she had 5 orders for the kitchen.

"Should I put your name in, then?" Sarah asks Clint.

Hawkeye (Barton) has posed:
It sure takes some special kind of patience to attend kids at a restaurant table! The kids demands would deter most people from volunteering for a large party filled with excited, demanding kids.

And once again, she's back, her job well done.

"You are good with customers, it sure takes a lot to do it right. And they don't seem of the rawdy kind."

Yes, it's a fact that some customers aren't polite, some being even aggressive at times.

Clint considers her question: should he still volunteer? Ah come one, man, you can face Hydra, what could a few hundred - a thousand - people and kids be? Nothing, really.

"Sure," Clint finally says, smiling, "I like to help others, that's the point. But hrm, sign me in as Francis Bart." He grins at that, "I might not be Tony Stark, but some people know me and this gig is about others, not about me."

On that, he finishes his coffee, placing the money for it on the counter.

Sarah Connor has posed:
Sarah flashes him a smile, and pulls out the sign up book. "It's a really big event that makes families feel good about themselves. And keep your money. This one is on us!"
