Profile

A member of the 31st Century Legion of Super-Heroes, Brainiac 5 traveled back in time one thousand years to seek a solution to a Crisis threatening his native time, the seed of which is buried in our era. Unfortunately, an accident at the moment of Time Jump caused his time bubble to crash, scuttling his plans. Adrift in a primitive era, uncertain if there is even a home to go back to, Querl Dox now seeks to begin to make sense of what has happened... and confront the reality that he may have to build a new life in a time not his own.

Description
Brainiac 5 - not a big dude. Actually he's average height, and skinny like a tough, wiry weed, with spiky blond hair and intelligent green eyes. He often wears a scowl, or some other variant of a put-upon expression, like whatever it is you're talking to him about, there is something better that he could be doing. However there are other times, when he lets his guard down, that his expression softens into something open and compassionate and kind. He's also a spectacular, organic shade of green, from the tips of his toes to the top of his head.

He's dressed in a purple and black outfit that utterly clashes with his skin tone, set off by a pair of high, stiff boots--also gold. In the 31st century, it's quite stylish. He has a L-star ring on his left ring finger, and a tool belt carrying any number of gizmos, gewgaws, and devices.

History

History

Born on the planet Colu in the 31st century, Brainiac 5 did not have a happy childhood. Given the propensity for his line to exibit massive intellect dovetailed with severe megalomania, his freedoms were severely curtailed until he got fed up and volunteered to be Colu's representative to a sketchy notion some huckster named R.J. Brande had sold to the United Planets government called the "Legion of Super-Heroes." The Coluans were, all told, glad to be rid of him, and then surprised when he not only didn't try to conquer the universe, but served with the Legion as a member of distiction. Some nebulous event which he is "not at liberty to describe" has caused him to come to the 21st century where he is engaged in the dual hobby of trying not to screw up the future while being an insufferable smarty-pants.

Personality

Personality
R.J. Brande's notes:

"Querl Dox does not suffer idiots lightly, and on his bad days you should assume yourself to be idiot until proven innocent. His big problem is that he KNOWS how smart he is, and when he's not careful that makes him both overconfident and absolutely insufferable. That said, the boy's actually a well of compassion and empathy, which he tries to bottle up because deep down inside, he's afraid it's just a matter of time until he goes bad like so many others who've carried his "honorific", and he considers establishing close bonds with people when he's just going to hurt them later to be downright sadistic. I think in the end his ultimate strength is his conscience, which when wielded in tandem with his intellect, makes him truly super-heroic."

Abilities

Intellect
Brainiac 5 is what Coluans call a twelfth-level intellect, the top of their scale and somewhat of a freak achievement even for Coluans, who seldom register below a seventh-level intellect. This manifests in his ability to grasp complex concepts, perform complex calculations quickly, focus on a number of tasks at the same time, his problem-solving alacrity, memory, and other higher-level cerebral functions, all of which are off the charts.

It does not, however, help his dating life. Not in the least little bit. Sigh.

Skills

Combat
From R.J. Brande's files:
"Every Legionnaire faces danger in the line of duty, and each of them has their specialties in a combat situation. Querl is what you'd call 'support'. He received the same combat training every member of the Legion did, of course, and I suppose if he ever deigned to throw a punch he'd do it the right way, but it's his intellect and his quick thinking that really make him dangerous. He compensates for any lack of skill with technology, particularly his personal force field. I do worry about him, sometimes--even the most brilliant devices break down, and some of the killers the Legion's fought would love to take a shot at a vulnerable Brainiac 5."

Inventor
From R.J. Brande's dossier:
"Ultra Boy once told me Querl can wire anything into anything, and he wasn't far off the mark. I have seen him cobble together functioning devices from spare parts and build supercomputers out of junk. If he doesn't have the tools, give him enough time and he'll invent those as well. I have few doubts that if I gave him a sharp piece of flint and sufficient resources he'd have a functioning (by any standards but his own) headquarters up and running inside of a month."

Mechanic
From R.J. Brande's files:
"Though he would prefer to be in his lab cuddled together with his mistresses theory and application, Querl is as likely to wind up in the role of Team Greasemonkey as he is team doctor. He's just too good at figuring out how things work, taking them apart, and putting them back together. If I gave him three broken down freighters he could give me a Legion Cruiser and spare parts!"

Medicine
From R.J. Brande's dossier:
"Though it causes him no end of consternation, the Legion has often pressed Querl into service as a stopgap medic and doctor on away missions and when boots on the ground were scarce. His advanced grasp of the high sciences extends into medicine, and he has proven capable of studying and treating any number of maladies--even ones which no one had ever heard of before! He is a little shakier on surgery, I think in part due to a lack of experience, but competent there, as well. However, I have been asked by his teammates to note in the Legion's files that his bedside manner is absolutely lousy."

Scientist
From R.J. Brande's dossier:

"Querl is the most gifted scientist I've ever seen. His grasp of both theory and application across the scientific spectrum is staggering, though he tends to focus more on the "hard" sciences, and while he could quote theory at you all day, his applicative grasp of "soft" sciences like psychology and sociology are, quite frankly, dismal. Still, give the boy a lab, and he'll work wonders. I have been a firsthand witness to Querl proving and demonstrating new discoveries in both biology and robotics. On the same day."

Legion Flight Ring
From Brainiac 5's notes:
"The Legion Flight ring is my design, a simple trifle of antigravity technology powered by a small piece of Valorium, an element which produces an anti-gravity field when an electromagnetic charge is run through it. The technology in the ring shapes the field and allows mental control of it through the nervous system. The ring also doubles as a Legion communicator keyed to the DNA code of an individual Legionnaire, capable of functioning at a distance of light-years with minimal lag."

Personal Force Field
From Brainiac 5's notes:

"I created the Personal Force Field when it became apparent that the Legion was going to force me out of the lab and into the field. The field uses Zero Point Energy to function as a manipulatable barrier against all forms of energy across the known spectrum ranging from kinetic impact to high levels of radiation. The field can also be used to simulate enhanced strength and even short-range hands-free manipulation of objects or people. It is also useful to keep people from touching me. Serendipitous, that."

Brainiac
From Brainiac 5's notes:
"While I bear it with good grace, the name 'Brainiac' isn't an honorific-it's a curse. I carry it as a reminder that I come from what one might poetically call a 'dark seed' of megalomaniac eugenicists, monstrous beings who seek to transcend the flesh and become creatures of pure intellect and knowledge. In my darkest moments, I see the appeal, and I wonder if perhaps that might be my destiny too, something buried deep within my genetic makeup that I cannot escape. But then I look at the good I have done, the friends I have made, and I know that I can't just throw that away. I will devote my life to undoing the cold-hearted evil the Brainiacs have done. I have to."

Magic
From Brainiac 5's notes:

"The M-word. I know that 'magical thinker' is a term dogmatic skeptics like to use to describe those who believe that phenomenon can arise from no cause, and I'm also aware that magic is not that simple. It is not 'no cause', but rather 'cause unknown'. I can see the scientific method in magical formula, the implementation of a process to get a desired result. That's comprehensible to me. The problem I have is accepting 'cause unknown'. Magic requires an implicit acceptance that there are limits on one's intellect and one's ability to perceive reality. And if there is one thing I am bad at, it is acknowledging limits to my intellect. The one area where I have consistently failed is in engaging magical phenomenon and magical threats."
