Description:

All lean angles and bony knees and elbows, this young man manages to look almost frail. He could definitely stand to put on a few pounds, that's for certain. His dark brown mop of shaggy hair almost looks like he cut it himself with a pocket knife and falls in a tangle across silvery blue eyes. His face is very square with an angular jaw, broad chin, and full lips. His left arm is crisscrossed by thin, pale scars, one or two of them slightly raised and rough looking, as though it's been opened repeatedly.

History

Happy. That's what the child named Eddie was. The only child of Chuck and Jannine Grayson, the small family lived just outside of a tiny town in Texas, not terribly far (by local standards) from Dallas and Fort Worth. While their modest home wasn't exactly a farm, they did have goats, chickens, rabbits, and a couple of horses. The little boy's days, when not doing chores and helping out with the livestock, were spent roaming the countryside, hunting squirrels, rabbits, and other small wild game with a pack of other local boys. And the older sister of one of those boys. Yuck! She wasn't that bad, though. At least she wasn't squeamish about getting dirty and skinning out whatever they caught, anyway. As long as she didn't hold them back, she was welcome to come with, anyway, and it was the only reason Robbie was allowed to hang out with them, so... That all changed one stormy summer night when Eddie was thirteen.

Tragedy struck when Chuck and Jannine were driving home from church one Wednesday night. Eddie had been sick, so stayed home alone (he was thirteen, now, after all. Plenty old enough to not need a babysitter) while the rest of the family went to their little country church two towns over; Chuck to choir practice and Jannine to her usual women's bible study. They didn't see the tree that the thunderstorm had knocked over, across the road, until it was too late. Chuck was dead at the scene. Jannine barely made it to the hospital. Eddie did not find out until the next morning when the sheriff knocked on the door.

The first few days, until other arrangements could be made, Eddie stayed with Robbie and his family. It was all a blur, partially because he was still getting over the flu. When everything was said and done, the animals were sold off, most going to friends and neighbors that promised to take good care of them, and Eddie was shipped off to New York City to live with his maternal grandparents. The land and house were kept, however, rented out until Eddie came of age to either take possession or decide for himself whether or not to sell it. What was left over after the mortgage was paid out of the rent was put into a savings account, both to cover repairs to the property and to build up a college fund for the remaining member of that branch of the Grayson family.

Things were... not good for the suddenly orphaned teenager. Eddie, now insisting on being called "Ed" (at least outside of the house) started school that fall in a completely new environment. One where he now had to wear a uniform. Ugh! He went from a decent A/B student to failing most of his classes. He acted out. He fell in with the wrong crowd. He started skipping school to smoke with his new friends. Instead of good clean fun, killing things, with the boys in the neighborhood, he started drinking and doing drugs, sneaking out at night, and generally just... not being the kid that his family knew he was. He yelled at his grandparents. A lot. Especially his grandfather, who had higher expectations for the boy that was named after him. Things only got worse when his mutation finally manifested. Once he realized that he could, when he concentrated, make people just... not see him... he took advantage of that ability to sneak out even more often.

Everything came to a head one spring day, not long before the end of school when he was fifteen. After being grounded (AGAIN) and having his computer and phone taken away, Ed packed a duffle bag with a bunch of camping supplies (think bug out bag), a couple of changes of clothes, grabbed a sleeping bag, and... well, be bugged out.

The next couple of years were rough. Abandoning all use of any variation of his first name, he became Gray. The Gray-man. He struggled to survive, especially during the winter months, struggled with finding enough to eat and safe places to sleep. Eventually, he did find a nice little hidden spot in Mutant Town to hunker down in. He also realized that his mutation gave him an advantage over other homeless kids: If he went invisible, he could more easily steal food and other necessities. Soon enough, he branched out from just what he needed to survive to stealing things with greater value to sell so that he could indulge in the unfortunate drug habit he picked up because of his so called "friends" after he moved to NYC.

When he was seventeen, he made a mistake. A terrible mistake. A terrible mistake that cost him his freedom and very nearly his life.

He trusted the wrong person.

Gray was lured into a situation where he found himself, along with a bunch of other young mutants and people that wouldn't be missed, snatched off the streets and sold off to the highest bidder. Fortunately, his captivity did not last very long. He was one of the lucky ones... He was rescued by this chick in all white and a big dude in a black cloak (cloaks have hoods; capes don't. It was a cloak, okay!) Unfortunately, being underage, after a short stint in the hospital to make sure that he wasn't going to keel over and die immediately, he was sent back home to his grandparents. That only lasted a month, or so, before he was gone, again. He just... he couldn't. He couldn't stay there. He couldn't be with the people that reminded him every single day of what he had lost and the mistakes that he'd made since his parents died.

And so, Gray is back on the street, struggling to find enough food, to get the drugs that his body craves, and to just survive.

Personality

Personality:

Gray is very cautious around people. With very rare exception, he only tolerates being touched with express permission. He has a visceral need to know where everyone around him is at all times, which often leads him to using his abilities more than strictly necessary. He is easily spooked and has a very strong "flight" response to fear. At heart, he is a very kind, gentle soul. Those he likes, he trusts completely. Unfortunately, he doesn't like very many people, having a strong tendency to hold everyone at arm's length. The thought of hurting someone pains him, even if it is done with good reason. Due to losing his parents at a young age, he has very serious abandonment issues and believes that everyone he allows to get close is going to leave him. Therefore, why let anyone get close?

Abilities

Invisibility:

Gray is able to emit a field that bends light around him and anything he is in physical contact with, up to a six foot radius. He must be conscious and focus on not being seen in order to use this ability. Objects "behind" his invisibility field are unaffected. He is only able to affect the visible spectrum. For those able to see heat or ultraviolet light, either naturally or through mechanical means, he is spotted just as easily as anyone else. From inside his invisibility field, everything takes on a hazy look; like viewing the world through antique glass or a constant heat shimmer. If someone were to accidentally enter the invisibility field without being included in it, they would see the world as slightly distorted and washed out.

Skills

Education:
Gray has a solid tenth grade education level. While his last couple of years of school were rocky and he failed a couple of his classes due to refusing to do the work, he does KNOW the information needed to pass tenth grade.

Firearms:
Having grown up a country boy, outside of any big cities, in Texas, Gray is proficient in the care and use of most common firearms used for hunting. He was just starting to get into archery before his parents died. He can hit a moving target nine times out of fourteen.

Hunting:
Gray grew up hunting small game (rabbits, dove, quail, etc.) around his home. He knows how to track, how to find game trails, and how to set simple traps created from found objects. He is proficient enough to be able to keep himself fed, most days, when in a wilderness environment.

Livestock:
Gray grew up with livestock and knows basic care to keep them alive and healthy, though major medical needs require the services of a veterinarian.

Street Smarts:
Years of living on the streets of Mutant Town have left Gray with an understanding of where and how to find a safe place to sleep at night. He knows what areas to avoid, where to find the most honest dealers, how to get the most for the stuff he steals, and how to avoid most fights.

Survival:

After years on his own, and a childhood, before that, spent running wild every summer, Gray is fairly knowledgeable about how to keep himself alive. He can find clean water, knows how to start a fire, and can easily clean small animals to prepare them for consumption. He knows common edible plants and basic first aid.

Resources

College Fund:
All of the income from renting out Gray's childhood home has been put into a savings account for him to be able to afford to continue his education upon graduation from high school. It has been added to over the years, even after he ran away, by various family members and friends of the family. He will gain access to it two months after high school graduation.

Home:
Gray's childhood home in Texas is still owned by the family. Once he is of legal age, it will be passed to him to do with as he wishes. To his knowledge, it has already been sold.

Thief:

Being a homeless kid with no actual legal income, Gray survives by stealing what he needs. Sure, he feels bad about taking stuff that isn't his, but one does what one must in order to survive, right? At least most security cameras can't pick him up when he's invisible.

Weaknesses

Addict:
What started off as the occasional shared joint when skipping school has evolved into an addiction to... well, frankly whatever Gray can get his hands on. He still enjoys marijuana as often as he can, but will actually spend money on meth at least once a week.

Dyslexic:
While he does enjoy stories and listens to audiobooks as often as he can, Gray has difficulty reading. Most of the time, written words just don't make sense due to the letters moving around and getting mixed up when he tries to read. He can read, if he focuses, but it triggers migraines and he does not see it as worth the effort or pain.

Homeless:
Due to idiot choices he has made, Gray is homeless. He has family that loves him and would take him back in a heartbeat, but he still chooses to live on the streets, instead.

Loner:
Gray... does not trust most people. He wants to, but he's had far too many people prove far too many times that no one really cares about him or what happens to him.

Orphan:
Gray's parents died when he was thirteen. This has left him feeling lost and abandoned. Deep down, he's afraid that anyone he allows to get close will leave him, as well.

Powers:

If Gray loses consciousness, he, and anything or anyone he is affecting, immediately become visible. If he were to drop or release a held object or person, they immediately become visible. He can only affect the visible spectrum, so heat, infrared, and ultraviolet vision can all see him as easily as anyone else.
